Introducing The Cannondale Sessions

The Ratboy had been rumored to be talking with Cannondale after parting ways with Santa Cruz and was then seen riding their new Habit recently. Today Cannondale has made the official announcement. Bryceland will lead a crew of riders consisting of Sam "Dave" Hockenhull, Max Nerurkar, and Sam Cofano. The four riders will be riding Cannondale's Habit and are currently on the alloy model.

bigquotesI wanted to start something new, fresh and unexpected.” said Bryceland. “This is a way to build something and give back to the next generation of riders.Josh Bryceland

With a strong team that's certainly gravity oriented, I would expect to see Cannondale ramping up development even more on that side of things following on the heels of the newly redesigned Habit but Cannondale isn't divulging anything for certain yet. With the Rat's storied history in World Cup racing, it only makes sense.

The riders recently spent some time filming in Spain, check out their fun-having edits below.

Sam "Dave" Hockenhull

this is exactly the vibe they need to bring on a new angle for a cannondale resurgence. looks like the bikes perfectly capable. I also wonder what it'd be like following josh on trails, with all his pedigree in world cup racing I'm sure he'd be gone in one or two corners.

  • 50 0
@rivercitycycles: at the very least the Ellsworth van got better parking spots.
  • 83 6
 @rivercitycycles:
1. Ellsworth has never really had any appeal since 2001.
2. Brian Lopes isn't a very likable person. He's done a few things over the years that would certainly be bad for a brand's image and appeal.

Here's one example: twitter.com/BrianLopes/status/66642238112935937

If Cannondale wakes up to realize the shine of their "premium" halo is 20yrs dead and gone, and can figure out how to build bikes that pack enough value & performance in the $2000-$4000 range to *beat* the most competitive offerings by YT or Intense, I might consider buying one. Otherwise, I'll happily watch the Rat torture test their product while I ride a brand I actually trust.

They got a new "everyday no fuss no competition just have a blast" kind of bike just like what the Prophet was. They needed some wild chaps like Cedric Gracia to show what kind of fun was to be had.  After working with Cannondale while working in a bike shop, I don't really understand the connection with Ratboy here. Cannondale was always really sketchy with their warranties, and really didn't service customers well. To put it in perspective, Specialized were way better about everything they do service wise. Not only that, we had to rebuild most of the mountain bikes that came from Cannondale's factory. Really poor QC, would always find blemishes and would be missing parts, etc. The no BS attitude that Ratboy brings to the table doesn't seem to line up with modern Cannondale at all. It's seems as though they are trying to re-invent themselves as a brand. That's great, but make it about taking care of the customers and the rest will follow in this industry.
  • 7 6
Ratboy has a no bs attitude? new to me
  • 2 0
Gotta sell bikes to do that. Hence Rat
  • 3 5
@santacruz-ing: Really? He's a minimalist that's not out just for a paycheck. Can't see how anyone would think otherwise.
  • 11 0
I think the connection started through Fabric - Nick Larsen is the Global Creative Director for Cannondale and Fabric. The brand is what you make it, and he knows a thing or two about that. Also close to Alex Rankin. Dream team right there.
  • 3 1
@primarydevices: That's definitely true! I guess that I'm looking at it from the previous brand image rather than the future of the company with the Fabric connection. I love watching these guys ride, that's for sure.
  • 1 0
@dualsuspensiondave: will be interesting to watch for sure, but like you say, the bikes in the shops have to back it up too!

Josh is a great marketing instrument for Cannondale. But doubt that it last that long. Seeing the interview on vitalmtb, where is the chemistry?

Nice to see a big, corporate brand make a move like this and try to inject some fun and character back into the sport after many years of playing it comparatively safe (boring?). No doubt somewhat of a pivot turn and perhaps a return to the edgy, out-there Missy heydays of the Cannondale Mtb? Let's hope so.
  • 6 3
Interesting reading the comments. Back in 91 I bought a Cannondale M400, it was the dogs bollocks and at the time a top brand with top athletes and the best model I could afford.
More recently Jerome Clementz has been riding for Cannondale and lets be honest all you arm chair critics, would you like to be able to ride like Jerome ?
I thought so.
Josh is doing what he feels is best, it's his life and I wish him the very best of luck, maybe next year we'll all be on a Cannondale !
  • 12 9
I feel it is my duty to warn people about cannondale quality. Owned 2 high end cannondale frames and broke them both within a year. When a conglomerate company takes over the quality goes down the drain. cannondale carbon is terribly weak. This cannondale session is a last ditch effort to bring back dwindling sales due to poor frame quality. you may vote me down but the truth is cannondale frames--all of them--break very easy especially in the chain stay area.
  • 5 1
Extremely interesting approach for Cannondale -
You can’t go faster from 0 attention to top coolness factor
Nice strategy - very curious about the nexts steps and next bikes from them
  • 2 0
Good to see a brand that has been well under the surface for years rise up with a bunch of new and relevant faces. The Habit looks really good in the flesh, my local IBD had one on the shelf just before Christmas, and knowing these guys are on the team just helps that bike look even better. Good job - exciting times
  • 6 0
Good video on Vital MTB too where the prospect of a new DH bike is mooted
  • 2 0
Isn't Aaron Chase on Cannondale, also?

I think Cannondale should flex their long history of aluminum frames. They were the first aluminum frame in the Tour de France. They have deep knowledge of aluminum bikes.

Also, Cannondale seems pretty good at marketing towards street cred. They sponsor a team of fixed gear racers in LA and sell a limited edition fixed gear frame-only to boutique bike shops, not available anywhere else and not even shown on their website. I think it's a smart move on their part, to sponsor a rider like Rat.

Marketing your brand thru a (former) DH star using videos with a title that shares the same name of a rival company's popular DH bike is probably not the way to go. It will be like Specialized promoting their brand thru "Loic Senders" videos.
  • 1 0
It's really cool to see Cannondale return to a format like this. Back in '07 they had their first version of this called 'The Cut' lead by Aaron Chase and they stuck around for a few years before the company decided to change direction and focus on XC.
