Pinkbike Poll: How Much Time Do You Spend Riding Each Week?

How much time do you spend riding, on average, in a given week during your prime riding season? We'll set aside those winter months that you don't want to think about and go for the prime time average.

Conversely, how much time would you like to spend riding each week? Now, don't be unrealistic here and say you want to spend 24/7 on the bike. Just think about if you had all the time you felt necessary to ride until you needed to rest, and what you could consistently maintain. What would be ideal?

Epic backcountry rides can run up the hours, but at some point you're going to need to sleep, right? - Sterling Lorence photo

That second column is one that I really doubt we'll see too many low numbers, but what is truly realistic?

How many hours, on average, do you spend riding each week?

third poll how many hours do you spend getting to the trails because it’s not like we all have them right outside our front doorstep.
  • 16 1
Exactly! Besides having a full time job and being a grownup, my trails are an hour from my house!!
  • 5 0
It takes an hour each way to ride to my local trails from my house.
  • 31 1
This is why I moved to where I am
  • 5 0
I'm pretty good. Within 20 minutes I am on four different systems. Within an hour I can ride 150 miles of trail. Four hours to Arkansas and eight hours to Minnesota lift access downhill.
  • 2 0
I'll drive 6 hours for a fancy smancy bike park if the snow would freakin melt already
  • 8 0
 just move
  • 12 0
@mybaben: I moved closer to trails, paid more for my house, but quality of life is vastly improved... nothing like being able to ride from home.
  • 9 0
@Grmasterd: glad to see some people on this planet still have their priorities straight
  • 12 0
I moved from a great-paying oilfield job in the butthole of the world (Permian Basin, Texas) to Sparks, Nevada, where I literally have trail access at the end of the block. Too bad I'm old and falling apart. Still riding (not driving) 12 to 14 hours a week. Thankfully I married a really smart woman a dozen years younger than me, so I have someone to take care of my aged and broken body.
  • 7 0
@mybaben: I'm 1.5 hours to the closest trail. And 2.5 from actually good trails!

My wife wasn't too thrilled when I started building a pump track in the backyard to scratch the itch.
  • 1 0
@rocky-mtn-gman: Way easier said than done. Trust me... I try on a daily basis.
  • 1 0
@mybaben: I hear ya, closest dh park for me is over 3 hrs away. Closest trail is over a hr
  • 2 0
I ride to my job, can take my bike on rapid transit of I want to and have a choice between off road over the mountain or on street bike bike paths....
  • 3 0
 ~30 seconds, Philly rocks.
  • 3 0
I've always been able to ride out my front door, no matter where I lived, tho I do drive 10 minutes to get to my trail building projects only because I am too lazy and time crunched to load up the b.o.b. trailer with tools anymore.
  • 1 0
I have 7 different trail networks within 45 minutes of my house and 3 of those are within 20 min or less. 2 lift access bike parks within a 3 hours drive and 3 more within 5 hours. I feel bad for the guys that need to drive an hour just to go for a decent ride, pretty sure I wouldn't l have time to ride at all if that was the case.
  • 2 0
 @Grmasterd: smart move!
  • 1 0
 Six minutes.
  • 5 1
And all of us teenagers have to ride to the trails
  • 2 0
That is why I up rooted everything and moved, def worth it.
  • 2 0
Yep, don't like how far away the trails are? Move. Simple.
  • 2 0
The access trail to the trail head starts in my driveway, Access trail is 300m long...
  • 1 0
Proper trails? 2 hours, give and take
  • 3 0
If you live more than 30 minutes from good trails maybe you should move? Razz
  • 1 0
Just want to understand it better: when you say I love X hrs from the next trail, do you refer to X hrs by bike or by car?
  • 1 0
@andreas2634: 5 mins ride from the bottom of the dh track Smile
  • 2 0
With 3 young kids I’m afraid to think about how little I’d probably ride without the trails on my doorstep. Nap time is ride time! Shuttles while my baby naps in the car are the bomb!
  • 3 0
@mybaben: I work an hour away but my nearest trail is a 12 minute ride. Not sure I'm doing it the right way around!
  • 2 0
@Grmasterd: Same here! I'm a 10 minute pedal from the trail head Smile
  • 1 0
40 minutes each way to work from home... But 5 minutes to the trails. Decided I better make my riding an easy decision, because I have no choice to be lazy and skip work.
  • 1 0
@DanBee: Its not that bad, ours is already on proper green trails at 4 and I built him a pump track. so there a lot of bike time its just a family event.
  • 3 0
I have singletrack 200 m from my front door. But I planned it that way.
  • 1 0
@mammal: Yeah, something like that for me too. 35 to 40 minutes on the commuter to work and back, 25 minutes to bring the kids to school (which is only a few days, my gf does the other days), then obviously the groceries and other shopping. And then I have a pumptrack 3min from home (usually on the BMX) and singletracks 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes from home (by mtb). Obviously I can take the car and travel further for better trails, but having something really near by is so much more valuable when time is tight. Most of my mtb rides are under two hours, pumptrack sessions even only half an hour of actual riding. Another advantage is that if I break my bike (or myself) I can usually still make it home so on these local trails I'm usually much more willing to push myself.
  • 2 0
work at a bike park.... its easy to rack up the hours
  • 1 0
When I just ride local trails its 5 min from home by bike or 5 min from work by car. Smile
  • 3 0
@Phillyenduro: For sure! First time in my life I’ve been able to ride from home to the trails it’s like a mile for me to get into the Wiss. Sometimes I catch myself wishing the trails weren’t uphill both ways but complaining about a pretty rad network that close to home would be absurd.
  • 2 0
@jason114: I'm in the same boat. BC rules.
  • 1 0
For me it’s 2.5 hours bus and 2.5hours bike everytime approximately.it sucks
  • 1 0
 @andreas2634: Car for me! Frown
  • 33 1
So someone’s actually said they’d like to ride less than 1? You’re on the wrong website mate!
  • 29 0
PB is just like TGR the vast majority don't participate they are just seagulls. Fly in, make a bunch of noise, shit on everything and leave.
  • 5 1
I always answer the exact opposite of any real answer on PB as not to feed the polling trolls correct information.
  • 1 0
At this point it's 10 people... is someone forcing these people to ride?? What's the deal here?
  • 6 2
@pinnityafairy: This seems a little petty and asinine. If you don't want to answer the polls don't, but why skew the data? Yes, PB most certainly sells this data to industry for various purposes, but last i checked you're not paying to access the site, and the industry accessing information of what their customers actually want is a win win in most cases. There's plenty of other far more nefarious data collection going on out there to be bothered by if you need a hobby.
  • 14 1
@lostlunchbox: You're looking waaaay too far into it. Here's the story of how it came to be:

I was listening to some good bluegrass music at a bar in Western NC just last night and got to talking to a few friends about how much we have been riding consistently. I had the thought that it would be a good poll and knew it was my turn to make one. I looked, saw we hadn't done one on this topic recently, and so I made it. Sure, someone in the industry could look at it if they wanted for whatever purpose but there's not a bit to it other than I was curious how much everyone was riding. (Another secret- that's more or less how all of the polls are made.)

@lostlunchbox: if you're not a psychologist or a psychiatrist you have no business telling other people how to live their lives. Here in America we have the freedom to do whatever the Huck we want. Cheers mate and happy shredding.
  • 1 1
 @danielsapp: trailforks ride logs
  • 3 1
@pinnityafairy: I’m not the only one! I actually try to guess the least popular answer for my own amusement. But basically yeah- skew the data create a little chaos, anarchy, punk rock, damn the man, save the empire. Whatever
  • 4 2
@danielsapp: Interesting. I guess i may be wrong, but many of the polls seem intentionally geared towards data collection. The ones on the sidebar of the homepage often are just about what specific products riders own and often don't include results information. I personally can't imagine any other reason for this? Please feel free to edify me as needed.
  • 3 1
@lostlunchbox: By definition, a poll is to collect data and opinions so, yes, they are all geared towards data collection, otherwise they wouldn’t be polls.

That’s what we have here- collection of data about how often random PB users ride. Sometimes we wonder what people are riding, or where, etc. All of those questions you may ask your friends? We just ask a lot of people at once.

There’s no conspiracy to any of the polls we make on the homepage. We just make them and post them. Sometimes we have an idea, sometimes we give each other ideas for them, and sometimes we get ideas from the comments. Alas, sometimes we want to make a poll but we know that someone is going to think we’re data mining for whatever bike brand, so we don’t.

If you want to see the results from any of the polls current or past we have posted, they’re available if you type it in the search, pull up the post, and click “results” at the bottom.
  • 1 0
@danielsapp: I've got nothing against these polls and don't mind answering them. The ones on the front page are typically "what ... are you going to buy next?" and I can never think of what to answer. Do you actually get good response on those other than "undecided"? As often written in the reviews and probably what most of us agree on, the stuff we're riding now is more than good enough. Only when stuff breaks and/or that part turns out to be incompatible with my other stuff so I need to buy even more, that's when I start figuring out what I'm going to buy next. I'm more than happy to tell what my bike is like now, but I've no clue what it will be like when a certain component breaks (like a stem, does a good stem even break)?
  • 2 1
@danielsapp: Yes it's all data, but now you're just playing the semantics game. By definition everything is data to the person viewing it. I'm sure you're aware when someone refers to data collection in this context they are pointing to monetization and/or uses other than just for the sake of curiosity Things may have changed, but there was a period in the past year or two where some polls did not provide the responder with the final results, and to be honest i've stopped responding to most polls for it. When the results tab was clicked a page popped us saying the the creator did not make the results public. Unless these were just in error, then presumably they were created by PB for monetary purposes, or created by industry players at the approval of PB. Once again i have no reservations providing this sort of info (as long as i get to see the results), but I'm amazed if some of it isn't being monetized in one form or another. And to clarify, i wasn't suggesting your particular poll was for this form of data collection (though, with user age/location etc and poll responses, i would imagine it could have some value in the greater compilation) , but was merely responding to the poster who felt that the information gathered from the sites polls was being used inappropriately. Admittedly my tinfoil hat fits a little tight some days too though.
  • 1 0
@lostlunchbox: when they stop covering XC, ebikes, enduro and start making more episodes of drop in tv only then will they get honest responses in the polls.

Yes! I’m first to leave a useless comment!

So cool! I'm looking forwards to the day I can do that too. Unfortunately my comments always end up so useful Frown .

This year marks the second year in a row that I've spent more time digging trails than riding them. It makes me feel both insufferably smug and intensely annoyed.
  • 6 0
Relatable. I've put a ton of time into pruning/clearing/raking our trails over the years (decades actually) and find it very gratifying when doing it, especially once you get to ride them, but always wonder why I'm the only one ever doing it.
  • 11 0
Should be a third poll, How many hours would you take off work to ride if money wasn’t an option
  • 8 0
 Every single one!
  • 6 0
I am confused . . . if money wasn't an option why work?
  • 3 0
Would probably work part time at a bike shop if that was the case
  • 6 0
I put actual pedal time, not load+drive+ride+drive+unload time, which ads between 2-5 hrs per week. What this ultimately means for me is a couple of ~2hr rides a week. Ideally I'd get another riding day consistently and add an extra riding hour to each outing, or same length rides but add a couple of days.

This Return to Earth challenge is keeping me out every day this month and to avoid monotony I'm doing a little exploring of my close-in trail options which are limited, but frankly more fun than I gave them credit for. Adding a short mid week evening ride to my normal schedule is clearly doable and I plan to do just that when July's 30-day challenge is over.
  • 9 0
Does "riding the keyboard" count too?
  • 10 0
I almost added that poll but I held off.
  • 2 0
@danielsapp: Well we need to know.
  • 1 0
@danielsapp: You guys must have the data... publish it anonymously! Average days a week on site, hours a day, etc, etc...
  • 1 0
@danielsapp: Should have added hours worked.
  • 1 0
@scotttherider - I'm saving that for another one. It'll probably have to do with trail work though.

@islandforlife - There may be someone somewhere who could somehow find and break down that data but it's not something I'm all that sure I personally want to see...a top ten user list would be interesting though.
  • 7 0
Hold on let me check my strava!
  • 3 0
Taking part in the Return To Earth contest has really opened my eyes. Previously I had given up on trying to ride more that once a week. Riding seven days a week hasn't been that crazy and it's been a hell of a lot more fun. I'm very lucky there are trails on my doorstep. It showed me how lazy I was being for not taking advantage of it. Whether I make it to thirty days or not, I'm still stoked. Make time, ride more!
  • 1 0
 Good on ya!
  • 3 0
I wouldn't like to spend 20+ hours each week riding; I like a balance of riding and building/maintaining trails. I love building jumps almost as much as I love riding
  • 1 0
Yeah, I assumed we were talking actual ride time, not building, bro down time, travel etc. . . I spent years putting in 12-15+ hour ride time weeks (plus building) and well lets just say that can take a toll on relationships. Of course, I then decided to ride a bike to the Southern most tip of the planet (Ushuaia) and discovered what real saddle time is all about!
  • 4 0
How many hours, on average, would you like to spend riding each week?

Hmm... All
  • 1 0
 Yeah stupid question..
  • 4 0
@colincolin Believe it or not, but some people enjoy doing more than one activity outdoors?
  • 3 0
@RXN059: why does it have to be outdoors? what's wrong with knitting?
  • 1 0
Last 3 years, I rode about 12-15 hrs per week (not including an additional 6hrs bike commuting prr week). Doctor gave me fluoroquinolones last November, now bike less than 1 hr per week total and still can barely walk more than a mile....
  • 1 0
 Did you rupture a tendon?
  • 1 0
@clink83: not yet, have tendinosis now in both achillies, my left quadriceps tendon, and my right wrist. Probably have nerve damage too.
  • 1 0
Thank God I had a billionaire purchased hundreds of acres right near my house and turned it into a private park That allows bikes with tons of really good trails to ride and plans on building more trails and buying more property can’t wait.
  • 1 0
Lucky to have one kid and a job that gives me almost every afternoon available to ride. I count my blessings. From on1990-2010 rode everything from no suspension to, hardtails, to a 130 mm trail bike 2x a week. In 2010 after I got the first of many 160-180 mm enduro rigs, I loved riding so much I rode 3-4x a week 6 months ago I got my first 180mm e-bike. Now I ride 6-7 days a week. Don't think I could live somewhere I'd have to travel more than 20 minutes to ride unless my family's welfare depended on it.
  • 4 0
Is this poll in regular hours or "Pinkbike Hours"
  • 1 1
Move to Flat Florida for 365 days a year of riding. Just a short half-day commute to the mountains to hit any Trails I want spring summer and fall. Close enough to hit Pisgah National Forest, Winrock, Beech Mountain, Bailey, Snowshoe, and any dirty Southeast Shred. Just living life everyday not worried about tomorrow.
  • 1 1
Snowshoe is not in the "South."
  • 1 1
 @tips-up: www.trailforks.com/ridelog/view/6718694
You see they make these things called shuttle vehicles that you can shuttle a bicycle on and get around the United States that way. Just a short day's drive to a wonderful Shred. Thus the term close enough
  • 1 1
@pinnityafairy: Congratulations that you visited wonderful Snowshoe. However, please refer to my prior... Snowshoe is not in the "South." Perhaps you should consult a map of North America if you're still confused.
  • 1 1
@tips-up: I love how a smartass from another country thinks they know more about my backyard stomping ground Trails than I do. Cheers mate and enjoy your attitude. I'm sure you'll go far in the world with it.
  • 1 1
@pinnityafairy: Wrong sucka. Don't let the flag fool you as it's only a representation of current address. I grew up less than an hour away from Snowshoe. So, like I said, Snowshoe is not in the "Southern"part of the United States. Change my mind.
  • 1 1
@tips-up: oh you grew up in West Virginia that explains everything LOL

@tips-up: take your nice chipper attitude to the orchard of dicks and pick some dicks from the Tree of dicks. Stick one in your ass and one in your mouth and then rotate them. Cheers douchebag
  • 1 1
@pinnityafairy: Damn. Must have struck a nerve there... You may want to re-read the comments and realise you started this little exchange with you sarcastic and patronizing comment toward someone you thought was from another country. Go ride your bike and stop being a keyboard warrior, child.
  • 1 1
@tips-up: I ride every day all over this country. From coast to coast. If you're not satisfied with the answers you get from a total stranger maybe you shouldn't suggest to them how to live their lives. Hugs and kisses buddy.
  • 1 0
@pinnityafairy: If the total stranger didn't answer like a complete dick, I wouldn't worry about it; however, for reasons previously stated, we find ourselves in this discourse. Congratulations for riding from "coast to coast." I'm sure you've made enemies all over... In all honesty, I'm not even mad. I understand you probably got picked on in high-school and you can only make yourself feel better by trying to be a big boy online where there are no repercussions. It's cool bro, and I'm super impressed that you put like 200 miles of riding in this year Smile Full-send dude, know what I mean?
  • 1 0
@tips-up: sounds like you need a hug buddy. Keep spending time here on this site I'm sure you'll find someone that loves you. Don't give up there's someone out there for you to talk to.

So few 20+ hours a week riders. Commenting on PB and #influencer time on social must be takkng up that slack
  • 2 0
I live in Squamish but working 50-70hrs a week definitely makes it tough, working is for the birds...need an early retirement plan, stat.

Yay me?

All the 20+ hopefuls clearly don't know what averaging three hours a day does for your saddle sores.
  • 1 0
unless I’m riding bike park . That’s an easy way to get 20+ hours a week in .
  • 1 0
you need a better seat bud. and you dont just go into 20+ a week willy nilly. Get a good seat, chamios and riding position and your body will adapt within a month of daily riding. People bike 10 hours a day or more in cross-country treks. I myself used to be a bike messenger doing 60 hours a week. no issues.
  • 2 0
Less now that Vail reduced biking hours!
  • 2 0
Since Sunday I have 12 hours on the bicycles. That is enough for me.
  • 1 0
I might have 12 hours over the last 5 years....
  • 2 0
 Answer #1: Not enough
Answer #2: More
  • 1 0
Put in at least 12 hours of physically demanding riding every week, about an hour of that riding is on a bicycle.
  • 1 0
Usually 5hrs commute on the bike per week, plus 2-4hrs of riding on a weekend. None for the past month due to injury...
  • 1 0
Should have a 'not enough' option
  • 1 0
Time on a ride is like 2 or 3x strava moving time

I'm ill; used to ride tons.
  • 1 0
I work at a bike shop... which means I have no time to ride
  • 2 0
