Pinkbike Poll: What Type of Mountain Biker Do You Wish You Could Be?

Jan 21, 2021 at 13:18
by Daniel Sapp
Wonder kid. Reece Wilson is your 2020 World Champion.
Do you ever dream of how it would feel to be the best? Can you feel yourself hitting all of the right lines and coming across the line in first? Or are you just the most stylish rider out there?

Have you ever dreamed of being a different rider than who you are? I'm not talking about wishing you could race one category higher or your long term aspirations. Think about if you could be anyone...

Would you be the old school freerider? An amazing dirt jumper? A world-class XC racer? Or a top-ten UCI DH pro?

Me? I'd probably be the all-arounder. I'd love to be equally comfortable placing well in a stacked DH race and then going out the next weekend and beating up on people in a XC stage race. I did impose some constraints on my fantasy - I imagine in this scenario I probably wouldn't win anything outside of regional or national level races because I wouldn't be focused on one individual event, but I'd be able to ride anywhere and with anyone, having a good time.

How about you? Which rider from this list would you be?

What type of mountain biker do you wish you could be?

Can't choose Waki, so nothing to see here folks. Next!
  • 37 10
why would you want to be Waki
  • 214 1
The next Waki will be chosen on PB’s new show, The Commenteer.
  • 11 4
 Where is waki?
  • 8 2
Havn't seen him in ages. Did he get banned?
  • 31 1
@mtb-jon: rumor has it that he's banned.
probably lurking as another user, different name, different country....
wouldn't be surprised if it was @Supergirl56 lol
  • 12 0
@mtb-jon: I'm pretty sure he deleted his pb account.
  • 10 0
I seem to remember he's a big fan of dumplings, maybe he's on a dumping forum these days. Specifically Polish dumplings, all others were not as good.
  • 8 1
Jesus is Waki the new Randy now?
  • 23 0
@BenPea: No Waki is the new Protour. Users whose memory faded into legend then myth then lost to time immemorial.
  • 4 0
@freestyIAM: protour is still around, he pops up from time to time.
  • 3 0
 @freestyIAM: that's even worse
  • 19 0
Waki doesn't even wanna be Waki
  • 2 0
 @MTBrent: hahaha nailed it!
  • 2 0
You wish you were the kind of mountain biker that doesn't even ride?
  • 2 0
@fullfacemike: waki has a pretty decent bunny hop tbh.
  • 17 2
@mtb-jon: He's not banned. He took it upon himself to take a time out. My guess is he's in a buddhist monastery meditating in silence for a few months. He's taken a vow of silence so his return to Pinkbike will be well planned and glorious.
  • 5 2
@onemanarmy: I hope his return will be gloriousSmile
  • 13 12
@onemanarmy: I recall pulling up his user page shortly after he went quiet and seeing something like "Suspended for 999999999 days." This whole "Waki is glorious and was just too cool for Pinkbike" narrative is total nonsense. What makes sense is this: he said a lot of f*cked up stuff and got a well-deserved boot.
  • 3 0
@freestyIAM: @Protour where you at home dawg
  • 8 1
@chrod: lol im not half as good at insulting people as waki. And for the record if i ever become like him i hope to be banned.
  • 8 2
Glad I’m not the only one waiting to see Wakis grand return
  • 4 0
@Supergirl56: just work on your self-importance and tell people they're not a real mountain biker if they don't need an enduro bike. You'll be Wakiing it in no time.
  • 2 2
@fullfacemike: I think me waki and possibly road stain or another lowlife were arguing about race related affairs on a pinkbike warning article and things got out of control ( typically) . Waki was either suspended or new he would be so left !
  • 10 2
Pinkbike without Waki is like Motogp without Valentino Rossi
  • 4 0
@denis80: or like Wacky Races without Dick Dastardly
  • 3 3
@fullfacemike: thats not true. He stepped out on his own. There was no banning or "boot" from PB.
Anyway he had been commenting for more than a decade on the site, the comment section was very different 10 or 5 years ago, it took time for me to understand his sense of humor, it was hard back then, imagine now, it was time for him to step out.
  • 5 1
@Narro2: It's not a case of "understanding his humour", he came across as an arrogant, self-entitled narcissist.

He got called out on it, he realized how much of an internet dick he is, and since he is too arrogant to type out a legitimate apology, his little leave of absence is his way of apologizing.

Simple.
  • 4 0
@mtb-jon: I heard he has taken up scootering, pulled his first manual last Friday.
  • 2 1
@fullfacemike: indeed. He asked to be banned for his racist comments. Moderators didn't wait for the next chance.
  • 6 3
@Narro2: You know, it might have been roadstain who was banned for infinity hours. Whether or not Waki quit before he got fired is moot; he was ultimately terrible for the future of this community. Saying arrogant, racist, sexist, bigoted, or otherwise shitty stuff wasn't any more ok a decade ago than it is now. People are just quicker to call folks out for that these days and it's making curmudgeons like Waki et al. feel persecuted. Coming around to his sense of humor is coming around to an archaic way of conducting business that is just not acceptable anymore.
  • 3 0
@fullfacemike: he was getting quite into magic mushrooms, which I feel was a good direction for him. Who knows what he's morphed into.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Mushrooms always make things better Smile
  • 2 0
@m1dg3t: mental health wise that's very true in some cases
  • 6 1
@jaycubzz @fullfacemike Nah, I don’t agree, he just trolled you for so many years and are not humble enough to accept it and have a chuckle about it.
It is easier to take the position “guy I don’t like needs to be gone”
  • 1 4
@Narro2: Yep, you definitely have the moral high ground here. I see you won't be talked into "being a dick is bad" so I'll quit beating my head against that wall.
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: Just in general LoL

They aren't called fungi for nothing Wink
  • 3 0
 @lehott: I'm still kicking.
  • 76 0
I'm 60-but-still-smash-kids-half-my-age-both-up-and-downhill-all-day option please. Probably a pipe dream, but something to aspire to one day - I'm the kid that sees those guys and wants to be them when I'm their age.
  • 7 0
Keep fit and keep the passion and you'll get there Wink
  • 30 0
i'm 61 and while i'm not "smashing"anybody these days, i'll admit it's an ego boost running into somebody young on a sketchy feature and them thinking it's cool i'm still trying

flag nurseben (Jan 22, 2021 at 12:25) (Below Threshold)
Im 55 and smash people half my age, maybe you need to try harder Wink
  • 49 1
61 and smashed myself. There you are.
  • 9 1
Luckily, as we get older we heal faster and things don't hurt anymore so we are more likely to try that drop or double. I wish. Vitamin I FTW
  • 6 0
On a ride recently I was desperately holding onto the wheel of one of the faster local racers here on a monster climb, when a 60+ year old former Legend of XC hammered past us out of the saddle and dropped us like we were standing still.

Life goals!
  • 8 0
I'm coming up on 54 and trying hard to get there! Doing pretty well but my 30 year old, lycra-wearing, XC-racing self could easily drop my current self on any climb. On the DH, I have better skills today than I did back then, but I'm a little more "sensible" in my decision making.
  • 7 0
I'm 60 and I'm not nearly as fast as the kids, but I'm the one who's still cranking up the big climbs when some of the nippers are pushing their bikes... And that makes me very happy!
  • 18 1
I’m 44 and still smashing my wife who is 43/44ths my age.
  • 5 0
@orphan: at 65, they start using terms like “legend”, which is code for “Jaysus, he’s fokin old”
  • 3 0
@codypup: -how about when they start calling you SIR
  • 3 0
@billreilly: Fantastic. i won't spoil your positive mindset by informing you of the details of what awaits you. LOL
i'm 75 and at seventy , mind said " pedal ! " and my body said ," oh hell no ". (-:

 @Deadclmbr: jealous much?

Don’t you worry, when you get old(er) you’ll get your chance.

Play the hand you’re dealt or fold, simple choice.

I’ll be riding till they put me in the ground!
  • 5 0
The older I get, the faster I used to be ;-)
  • 3 0
@skiwenric: Exactly. By the time I hit 50 I will have almost made pro in my 20s
  • 57 0
Kade Edwards. Guy shreds on everything
  • 6 0
 This or Brendon
  • 19 0
 Ffs autocorrect...Brendog
  • 3 0
 Definitely Kade. Unbeatable all arounder
  • 2 0
Agreed, channel Kade when I'm on the MTB and channel Dak Roche on BMX. That's the dream.
  • 2 0
 Upvote plenty
  • 1 0
He’s on the RedBull team now, I could see a series of him competing with a group of other pro “all rounders” to see how he would fair ???? @fracasnoxteam:
  • 58 1
Where's the "doing weird shit like Yoann Barelli" category?
  • 6 1
Pretty sure Yoann is Pinkbike readers favorite biker. If I wasn't married to a woman I'd be crushing hard on that frenchie.
  • 42 0
 I don't see a 'Mitch Ropelato' category.
  • 15 0
 All rounder?
  • 8 0
 @paulskibum: Smoothest and most stylish?
  • 9 0
I was looking for the Brynn Atkinson button... so I picked smoothest and most stylish.
  • 28 0
I wish I could be the mountain biker who lives the dirtbag lifestyle who drives a crappy van, eats top ramen, and works a couple odd jobs every now and then to support my travels.
  • 12 0
 I believe in you
  • 5 0
The crappy van is stressful but otherwise it’s very rewarding! Do it, you’ll never look back

  • 2 0
 @Lolo-the-frenchie: Scary to think....

@Lolo-the-frenchie: lol he’d prolly answer something else
  • 19 0
Pro old school Freerider....guys like Tippie absolutely shredding every mountain for almost 40 years and having so much fun doing it, that should be the dream for most of us.
  • 5 0
That would be awesome but then you wake up tomorrow and you're 51. I'm 47 and not trying to speed up my aging. I'll opt back to mid-20s please.
  • 5 9
flag nurseben (Jan 22, 2021 at 12:36) (Below Threshold)
@AndrewFleming: Bah! I got you by five years, I still ride hard and take chances, and I plan on riding this way as long as I can.

Riding hard since the mid seventies!
  • 3 0
 @nurseben: Sh*t, I got you by 15 years
  • 3 0
@nurseben: Yea, mate, rad! Keep on it! … but if we're wishing on things here, I'll go back to my mid-20s!
  • 2 4
@Joecx: I know, fifty is still young, I’m mostly speaking to the twenty and thirty somethings.

I rode with a new buddy the other day, he’s 39 yo, when I told him I was 55yo he says: “it’s good to know there’s hope for me”

I completely destroyed him and my other forty something buddy Smile

I find climbing is my strongest skill, followed by descending, flats and high spin rates are what get me, but I’m good for as long a ride as I want.

I hope you’re still killing it at eighty!

One that can once again ride my bike with friends, anywhere in the world and without curfew restrictions?! ... I just want to go back to the mountain biker I used to be before this whole pandemic s**t show... you know... able to ride anywhere and anytime!
  • 2 0
Came here to write exactly this. Living in the flatlands was hard enough anyway without the pandemic.
  • 15 0
 Old school freerider for sure
  • 10 0
Whatever category Phil Atwill is in. He's technically a World Cup DH pro, but what seems like would make him so fun to be is only partially that.
  • 3 0
Isn't he is the smoothest and more stylish!
  • 1 0
Phil Atwill FTW! Dude looks like the happiest guy on earth. Steeeeeezzzzz!
  • 10 0
Would you rather be a Ferrari F1 pilot or be really good all around driving your BMW M3 around town. World Cup DH factory pro all day, every day. Pinnacle of the sport!
  • 2 0
Absolutely! Well said. I would much rather thread the needle through a rock garden at mach speed than rail manicured berms anyday. DH pros send it just as high and are just as stylish as other riders, they may not have the tricks but they make up for it with their speed and lack of fear.
  • 15 4
 Duplicate options:
EWS Pro = The Allrounder
  • 2 0
I was pretty sure "Smoothest and most stylish" = "All of the above." Smooth is fast.
  • 10 0

The real question is, what kind of rider would Dick Pound be?
  • 3 0
The type that isn't a plug. The type that isn't a victim to the industries focus groups. The type that just rides their bike and couldn't care less about what everyone else is doing. The type that doesn't need to spend $10k to rip around my street & local XC trails. The type that doesn't keep their bike for a wall hanger/garage queen...

  • 3 0
Yep, if I could have that skill level and ride bikes hang n hang out with my bro all day every day then I'd be prepared to smash a tooth out to look the part
  • 4 0
The question is incorrectly phrased ending with a verb, consider instead: What Type of Mountain Biker Do You Wish You Could Be Besides Nino Schurter?
  • 2 0
 A better one.

Lots of other things (wealthier, in better shape, etc). But basically I’d love to instantly have a skill increase.

And don’t need to be Sam Hill good. I’d be fine getting to “not quite viable to be a pro” level.
  • 2 0
My MTB passion started with DH, then Enduro & now back to my roots for long endurance events that won't send me to the hospital most likely. Both Ultra Endurance & XC is my focus now & I'm enjoying getting back on the bike again. ***still want to be chainless Aaron Gwin badass though***

@mcrosley: " E bikes were so 2020" ? really , then how do you explain that e bikes sold in europe have a projected growth rate of almost 17 % through 2025 .
But citing provable statistics to an invincible is pointless . " invincible ,as in still young enough to be convinced that they will never be unfit due to age . Just wait microman because as my father use to say ," it does'n't t get better " . meaning you WILL become unfit no matter how hard you train and if you want to keep riding into your 70s, 8os and beyond you will get an e bike . LOFL .

Gravity racing with a little freeride to keep it fun. Enduro races are way easier logistically as a weekend warrior, but I love having time to memorize and practice a track the way you do for DH. Chainless stages are the best, if I cared who could sustain the most watts I'd be a roadie.
  • 1 0
All-rounder. As much as I might dream of being a WC DH pro, I know from experience that path includes a lot of injuries. And the few injuries I've had over the years have been bad enough. As far as skills go, I would like to improve my trials skills.
  • 1 0
I was gonna vote ‘ World Cup DH Pro ‘ but thought; despite how amazing that feeling must be... it’s quite nice just enjoying it as a spectator tbh ????. We would love to be you on the podiums but would hate to be you the second you hit the ground, trees, rocks and jumps when you’re flat out racing ????????
