Frostbike is the winter gathering and in-house trade-show for North American distributor, Quality Bicycle Products (QBP) in Bloomington, Minnesota. There was a lot going on, from seminars for dealers to previews of new bikes from Salsa that you'll see here later this week, not to mention a ton of snow on the ground.

In addition to sliding around in the snow on fat bikes, I took a stroll thru the show to see what there was to see.

Five Ten / TLD Collab Shoes

Five Ten had some fresh looking shoes on display, the result of a collaboration with Troy Lee Designs. The Kestrel BOA recently came out, and the TLD edition pictured here will be available in March, along with the Impact Pro. The TLD edition Freeride Pro will be out in July.

Muc-Off Brake Rotor Cover

Muc-Off's rotor cover may seem a bit unnecessary until you've driven down a highway covered in salty winter slush or muddy forest service roads with your bike on the back of your car, and then gone for a ride only to have your brakes screaming the entire time. It's a practical solution to a common problem. It can also be used when you're washing the bike or lubing things up to keep from getting overspray and contaminants on your stoppers.

Kali Pace Helmet

The Pace is Kali's new trail helmet. The helmet has a fairly deep amount of coverage and uses a lower density layer to provide more protection in crashes that happen at lower speeds as well as rotational forces. The helmet looks really good and will sell for a mere $60 USD when it's available.

QBP Frostbike 2019

Ottolock

Ottolock isn't anything new but it's a practical product that I've found useful in a variety of situations, from locking up a bike in the bed of the Honda Ridgeline to securing it at the bike park while grabbing food. It coils up small enough to fit in a pocket and is strong enough to deter most quick grab-and-dash thefts. It comes in a variety of colors and a few different lengths.

Deity 35mm Copperhead Stem

Deity's new 35mm Copperhead stem looks sleek and will be available in a couple of weeks. There will be a 35mm and 50mm length option. There were also some hints of new 35mm bars but, alas, we can't show those quite yet.

Wolf Tooth Components

Wolf Tooth's dropper post lever that mounts on a drop bar caught my eye. Many mountain bikers can appreciate having a dropper post on nearly every bike. This lever is a good way to be able to hit the button and get the seat out of the way without taking your hands off of the bars of your skinny tire bike when things gets real. Wolf Tooth also had some sleek custom master link snappers for show attendees.

Spank Spoon DC Pedal

Spank's Spoon DC pedal is a more budget friendly version of their Spoon pedal. The DC is die-cast alloy and there are both painted and anodized colors available. The pedal sells for $79.90 USD.

Floyd's of Leadville

Ex-pro road racer Floyd Landis' CBD business seems to be thriving. CBD is taking off and more popular than ever in many places, especially the US. Floyd's had a huge assortment of CBD products on display from capsules and tinctures to gummies, salves, and pre/post ride drink mixes. There's still some debate as to whether it's all just snake oil sales, but more and more people are claiming to have seen the benefits from it, and it's clear that Landis and his associates are seeing the benefits as well.

QBP Frostbike 2019

Salsa EXP Seatpack

Bikepacking is all the buzz on Instagram these days. I mean, who doesn't like getting out in the woods to take over-romanticized pictures of your bike away from the monotony of society and every day life? But really, whether it's for a few hours or a few days, riding with a lot of gear on your back sucks. Salsa's EXP seatpack is a clean way to securely stash some supplies on your bike, it's dropper post compatible, and comes in a couple different sizes (small pictured).

QBP Frostbike 2019

ISSI Pedals

ISSI has a few different pedal designs. Their plastic Thump pedal comes in two different sizes and is geared towards more casual riding. The Stomp XL has a larger body and removable pins and the Trail III is an SPD style pedal with a nicely designed cage around the engagement mechanism.

Surly Big Easy

The Big Easy is Surly's new E-cargo bike. Overheard debate amongst the hipsters was over how many cases of PBR it would transport and what the range fully loaded down would be. Ten miles or a hundred, this is a cool rig and good proper use of e-bike technology.

Ergon SM Men Saddle

Ergon's new saddles are simplified and this one focuses on men's health, according to Ergon. There's one saddle for all disciplines of riding. It comes in two different widths, Small-Medium and Medium-Large. There are three different models- Sport, Comp, and Pro as well as several color options. We have one of the saddles in for testing, so look for a review once we get some more miles on it.

So I can have three brands on one pair of shoes now?
  • + 106
just wait for the SUPREME collab
  • + 65
 4 if you count Boa.
  • + 27
@kittenjuice: add a vibram sole and make 'er 5
  • + 25
5 if you repair them with Shoe Goo?
  • + 8
At least the new five tens aren't extremely hideous.
  • + 15
It looks like Adidas taking over Five Ten has slimmed their line-up. Sure we get a collaboration with TLD with fancy colors and 3 tomes the branding but the Impact high and Freerider High are both missing from the line up now. Unless they have new models that are going to be released. Very disappointing.
  • + 19
Yes...three brands and the clown colours come free of charge....what an opportunity!

@laxguy: I don't get why that brand is so famous now, they were budget skate brand at best back in the day and thier stuff fell apart pretty quick. I switched to etnies and never looked back.

Who downvotes a guy for dropping facts?Probably some teenage moron who knows nothing of the history of crappy brands but loves to ride the fad dick!! Supreme is garbage period and anyone who pays the prices of gucci for cheap chinese garbage is a complete and utter moron but hey you have a cool red rectangle the says Supreme so you're so dope lmao. Only dumb kids are brainwashed into buying trash.
  • + 26
@mhoshal: because fact is Five Ten started out as a climbing shoe company becoming renowned for their rubber's superior stickiness not a skateboard shoe company. Named after the climbing grade 5.10 which back in the day were the hardest climbs.
  • + 3
for each brand, add another $50
  • + 4
@Rdot84: for real! Gimme my high tops! Also... Are lace straps/ covers too much to ask for on a flat pedal shoe? Just because I don't clip in doesn't mean you have to punish me by feeding my laces to my chainring..
  • + 8
@mhoshal: they prob think ur talking about 5.10.
  • + 3
@RGonz: This might be my next shoe. www.unparallelsports.com/product/westridge Bike mag did a first impression of them. New company with former 5.10 employees and using some Teva tooling too
  • + 4
@Rdot84: Very interesting, on the climbing side they have a few now discontinued (and missed by many) models and seems like they have all the knowhow of sticky rubber that 5.10 had .

In rockclimbing forums there is talk about how Adidas has the brand name "Stealth" but uses a slight variation of old compounds much like the Terrex trailcross was slightly different in feel compared to freeriders.

UP branding seems to be a bit off but to be fair 5.10 also has a history of good function shoes with a somewhat crude remedial-shoe look with cheap looking logos in offputting colors..

UP has learned someting there though as there is alot of black going on and black always works.
  • + 3
@Rdot84: Freerider High is gone but the Impact High is still for sale. I guess there's just not enough people buying high tops...
  • + 9
@lifeofloon: they should work with transition to bring their shoes up to 5.11
  • + 1
if stealth rubber is considered a brand you can even have four
  • - 3
@lifeofloon: I'm pretty sure I said supreme there buddy not 5 10 do you know how to read? I love 5 10 I hate Supreme. If you knew anytging you'd know supreme used to make garbage products including shoes.
  • + 1
Is that sarcasm? Haha, they damn well are. Looks like fake leather, and the colour combos are terrible!
  • + 1
 Is it boost?
  • + 1
@zede: I like that! I also kayak and what always bothered me was that the whitewater rating scale was fixed, there it's no room for progression as people run harder and harder rivers.
  • + 1
And pay like for 3 pairs.. Wink
  • + 3
@Rdot84: I was thinking the same thing. I really like my hightop insulated Five Tens and they are no longer available.
  • + 4
@lifeofloon: lol I think he’s talking about supreme, the skateboarding brand. Five ten never had anything to do with skating
  • + 1
@feeblesmith: My adidas Terrex with Stealth are far lighter than any of the Impacts I've owned, they've lasted longer, and they don't seem to magically generate sand inside like Impacts do.

Swear to god they just keep showing us the brake rotor shower cap to see the comments section get fired up
  • + 7
Ha, always thought they were stupid... then yesterday, drove from Victoria over the Malahat to go ride the Nanaimo Bike Park with the kids. My rotors and brakes were covered in a nice dried salty brine by the time we arrived. Soon as I took one look I thought, oh Muck Off! Obviously I still wouldn't actually buy these, I'll just cover my rotors and calipers with a rag and elastics or something. But, it did open my eyes to how useful a product they could be...
  • + 4
Yep, I need to get some. Every time I go near my stanchions with silicone spray I manage to get some on the rotors no matter how carefully they are wrapped in plastic bags/rags or whatever is lying around. Useful product.
  • + 14
@tremeer023: why on Earth are you putting “silicone spray” on your stanchions???
  • + 1
@ahauck: Curse my fat fingers, I accidentally neg propped you. I hope you can forgive me.

@Boschinator: bu- but muh internet points!!

@ahauck: because I like the way it feels. Open to other suggestions though ;-)

@tremeer023: Order some WPL Fork Boost, that stuff works wonders on the seals and small bump sensitivity. Also is 100% edible if you need a snack
  • + 1
@adventuresbycole: thanks for the tip. I was using Fork Juice but the WPL stuff looks better.
  • + 3
@tremeer023: Try servicing the fork lowers. Takes only a few minutes at most. Not sure what forks you're running but mine stipulate in the user manual to not apply anything to the stanchions or seals.
  • + 2
@tremeer023: Plain old fork oil... Maxima is great.
  • + 1
@vinay: yeh, I have serviced them recently. I think the best thing is to keep the foam wiper things soaked with oil but I find it very fiddly getting them back in place perfectly. I've got a Yari - I expect there is advice to that effect re. putting other lubes on.
  • + 26
Haven't we seen the muc-off cover in like 5 of these trade show things already...
  • + 32
I would like to see it being thrown and then retrieved, or at least picked up, by a dog. What is the average distance for these rotor covers when thrown by a standard human? Boost human? Super boost human? Is the distance metric or is it imperial? What is the mouth feel? I feel like I'm the only dog asking the real questions here.
  • + 3
Someone at Pinkbike must own muc-off stock

Is it only me that finds it kinda ironic, that a guy kicked out of a pro sport for doping, is now selling a form of performance enhancing drug? And i appreciate there is a a lot more back story there....
  • + 2
Man I was going to say the same thing
  • + 4
Actually, CBD is not on the WADA list... Ironically, it's one of the few item that isn't on the WADA list...
  • + 1
 @lumpy873: Similarly, neither is snake-oil.
  • + 2
@lumpy873: I didn't think @chadgmail was implying CBD was illegal. We're just appreciating the irony of it all.
  • + 2
@hangdogr: but he did say Floyd is selling a form of a performance enhancing drug.

I just find it funny that with the mile long list of stuff they can't use, CBD isn't on that list.. Is it a performance enhancing drug? I don't know... Is it snake oil? I've never tried it, but I know a lot of people that use it and swear by it...
  • + 1
@hangdogr: Correct. I haven't got a clue what CBD is TBH, let alone know whether its illegal or not.
  • + 8
Always makes me yawn when i see endless pics of stems and pedals. As if the mountain bike world needs anymore of them. Then i see a little gem like the brake rotor cover and think what a clever idea that is. We need more clever ideas like this not loads of the same stuff we have had for many years.
  • + 3
Don’t know why the downvotes, a stem is a stem, you’re right.
  • + 1
 @cyrways: Thank you.
  • + 1
@cyrways: truth lol how do you people pay $100+ for something as inconsequential as a stem?
  • + 9
Now we just need dropper levers for time trial bars
  • + 8
 Oooh! A brake rotor koozie!

That deity ano color is sick. Can't wait to see the whole line in that color.

@Chickenwithshovel: Yeah dude. Classic combo. Be rad to see it make a push in to MTB.

rotor covers... reminds me of this Mormon kid I hired one year.... we used this foam spray stuff to clean frames, make em look purdy again. sorta a foam version of ArmorAll. I handed him the spray bottle, point at the bike in the stand, told him to clean the bike...…..
I walk away and tinker on the computer. a couple minutes later, I hear psssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssT

so, I hear the noise but, it doesn't register what it is --- I actually though someone was just spraying something off with the air hose. suddenly, it dawns on me what the noise was. Jr pretty much emptied the entire bottle of spray foam onto the bike -- the bike looked like a Stay Puff marshmallow …. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! what are you doing, dropping the Fbomb occasionally
  • + 1
Honestly, WT actual F does this kid being Mormon have anything to do with your story? What a random detail. And how do rotor covers remind you of this?
  • + 1
Oh, ha... I actually forgot that part of the story, his "religion"... at the time, there's was a bunch of Elder's riding around town on bikes, pushing their "religion" on everyone. FYI: Mormon is total B.S. ever read they terms and conditions of what the live by? pretty whack..

He came to the shop, looking to convert me, I ended up just hiring him for the summer instead. Had to put up with his babbling on about how great being Mormon was every time he worked but, he was a good kid. he had a few things that were classic rookie mistakes but made it gave us a good laugh at the end of the day.

no idea why the rotor covers reminded my of Elder... just did.

Be aware that the Ottolock offers *very* little security:

tinyurl.com/yb7kepdy
  • + 1
3 sets of digits? It would be far more secure with 4, and not much more expensive to do.
  • + 2
Glad to see that LPL video linked. Ottolock is nothing more than a glorified cable tie. I'd barely trust it if my bike was within arm's reach. Of course this is only my opinion, but sheesh.
  • + 1
No way I'd trust that lock on my bike. I use a New York FAHGETTABOUDIT lock, when I leave my bike on my Ridgeline, if it's out of sight for more than 30 seconds.
  • + 2
I love BOA and have a few shoes and boots with them. The BOA gets broken more often on the side and needs to be on the top in the middle to protect it. BOA is awesome though.
  • + 4
Quite a promising-looking affordable helmet from Kali. Couybe a game changer, we’ll see.
  • + 1
@aftenshoes is the way to go, I use a ziplock bag for my rotors when washing my bike, I don’t need a fart duct in my saddle I stand for those and let whoever behind me hear it lol, I’m just waiting for a company to come out with bolts like titanium ones so I can waste my time reading about those then all this old news stuff cool

$49 RF Chesters, $55 Kona WahWah2's. End of pedal story.
  • + 1
You can get random-brand Chesters on Amazon for $25. Been on a pair of "Eagle Riding" Chesters for a couple seaons and they're rock solid.

Diety Compound composite pedals are another good chapter in the story. $49

  • + 1
@BenPea: I always misspell that name even though I can spell Deicide like it's second nature.

 Chesters suck
  • - 1
@freeridejerk888: you’re in a lonely monitory there friend. Chester’s are highly rated and get well deserved praise. They started the trend in nylon affordable pedal that just keep on ticking. But if you’re so set in your opinion, you should at least elaborate farther than saying they suck.
  • + 1
@cyrways: actually, the Deity Compound started the plastic pedal trend for MTB.
  • + 2
No, an Adidas logo always means the stuff is _made_ in the cheapest way imaginable, not that it’s sold cheap.
  • + 1
No I'm not. They suck a lot. No grip @cyrways:

Nice of PB to let us know that the new Trail III pedals wholesale at $63 and retail at $125....nobody is going to pay retail for those now. #MAPIsDead
  • + 4
Hope no pros are trusting that CBD stuff from Floyd Landis.
  • + 2
Actually I think that’s the main reason his stuff sells so well, everybody buying hopes there might be some traces in it of what made the US Postal team so fast back then.

Hopefully that Addias logo means that Five Ten's will now be cheaper!
  • + 6
 10% more per logo proly
