Thieves chose the wrong bikes, especially the world champs bike. The are so easy to spot and everyone knows what they look like. Good luck on finding 'em and keep your spirits high. (Also, lock your bikes. Even if they're inside)
  • 26 2
That bike is already stripped for parts and the frame repainted.... it's a shame too because that's a beautiful paint job.
  • 5 1
They'll take the parts off and sell them then chuck the frames. Good money and hard to trace.

@Mattysville: Frame repainted? It is not cheap to repaint a frame and if thief does it himself he will lose all value. He may as well throw it to the bin.
  • 10 1
@Mattysville: Why not just steal the whole vehicle, it has to be worth a lot more? Are they really making out stripping parts off a bicycle and reselling them?
  • 4 1
@apneaaddict: Vehicles are hard to steal these days - you pretty much have to put it on a flatbed.
  • 1 1
@g-42: Even then they pretty much have a GPS for each possible part on it.
  • 35 3
Please tell me you didn't leave 3 bikes worth more than the van in the van. My $3000 street bike sleeps next to my bed in any hotel.
  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: some sanding and black spray can paint job and you are good to go. Might as well delete/restamp the serial number while you do that.
  • 1 0
@g-42: That's the current generation of Ford Transit which is the most stolen van in England.
  • 4 0
Funny.... don't think they recovered Gwin's bike or any of the other bikes stolen recently. These teams need to learn.... don't be lazy. Bring the bikes INSIDE. No different than bands leaving all their shit in vans overnight at hotels.
  • 1 0
 @WAKIdesigns:

Can repaint that frame a nice single color for under $600... and that's in California. If they have an organized ring they can probably spray it much cheaper... Or just scrap the frame and sell off the parts.

It's like a car... frames just end up in a ditch somewhere.

But I really wouldn't put a respray past someone. Selling that thing unsprayed would be stupid as hell.
  • 16 1
@onemanarmy: that and maybe the UK police could stop arresting people for saying mean things on Twitter and start finding bike thieves (and hopefully they would be held accountable... gotta do something to make the thievery not worth it...) Most UK cities are wired up to 1984 levels with CCTV, seems to me they could do more to find thieves.

Theyre stealing they're own bikes for insurance claims and decrease supply and hype the demand, its the ol' make it seem more desirable than it is sales trick. Luckily the ousted prince of Nigeria has shares for bothe the insurance and bike company, but needs a trophy for the real worlds he will be hosting to become a participant and competitor the ousted prince only asks for bank statements with accounts numbers along with personal identification and any outstanding credit you hope racing will make dissappear. Grand prize is a bike recovered from one of the princes rivals.

Been a lot of pros getting their bikes jacked lately. Which sucks. Feel like these guys aren’t keeping a close enough eye on their bikes.
  • 32 0
I feel like they're posting their whereabouts and itineraries on social media then leaving bikes unattended. They're being targeted for sure. Fine line between constant content creation and privacy these days for elite athletes especially in the off season.

Same shit that happened to gwins bikes. Left them in a van ..it's stupid. Too many things that could be done to stop it but aren't.

What would be cool is a bike beacon that sends the GPS location. Replace a small battery every six months or so with the beacon in the seat tube. I found this online. Could fit inside the steer tube with a plug at the bottom.

It just sucks to have bikes stolen and there is little that can be done to track it.

And like I said lock it in place with lockon grips then replace the bolts with tamper proof bolts that require a special tool.
  • 2 0
 @reverend27:
Yup that looks good too. What ever helps to track a bike and is not so obvious that it is disabled as soon as it is stolen.

@vjunior21: I think thieves may be clever enough now or in the near future to discover those beacons.

  • 3 0
I mean, they're not exactly discreet with their bright colors and fancy vans, and whatnot. If I was a gangster from the 'hood, these guys who are flaunting all their fancy shit are the exact ones I'd target.
  • 2 3
I don't think the pros actually give a shit as they have not paid for a single bike part in years. It is us the consumer that pays for their bikes. Still bike thieves suck donkey balls and hopefully karma comes their way.
  • 2 0
@onemind123: I’m sure he cares about his one of a kind worlds bike. Just because they get them for “free” doesn’t mean they don’t care greatly about them. Not only that but a lot of riders consider their bikes part of their salary. They earn their bikes, it’s not like they sit at home watching tv all day and are rewarded with new bikes.
  • 3 1
@nateisgrate: Of these sponsored riders cared about their +10k bikes the way I care about my 10k bike there is no way they would leave one of them (never mind four) inside an unwatched vehicle overnight.
  • 1 0
@onemind123: it’s a pretty sad day when you need a brinks truck to carry bikes in. Most people don’t expect their vehicle to be broken into, that’s a pretty extreme case of bike theft albeit it seems to be happening more and more often. However, if he wasn’t a sponsored rider and people weren’t aware of the bikes he owns maybe he wouldn’t have been targeted.

Bad hombres stealing bikes in Mexico last week. Bad lads stealing bikes in the UK this week.
  • 21 3
Can't imagine leaving 40K+ worth of bikes in a VAN, or a hotel room without additional locking. Too easy. I feel for these guys, but come on... these vans should have custom lockdown setups, alarms, wireless connections to phones etc for the value of what they are hauling around. For all the technology and security options available, don't let a dick with a prybar and bolt cutter walk away with your joy!
  • 13 1
or just a really mean dog
  • 20 0
They've already been spray painted without taking the wheels off and are being ridden around by a bottle picker.
  • 13 0
Isn’t it standard practice to bring your bikes in the hotel rooms whenever you travel? My friends and I do and we have Walmart bikes!
  • 8 0
This happens way to often. Gotta think there's a huge opportunity for developing smaller GPS tracking devices for bikes.
  • 5 0
There are GPS devices that would already fit, they just don’t bother adding them. Hell, use a Tile (or equivalent) and you’d have a chance.
  • 2 1
thief has a better chance of finding the tile an throwing it away
  • 2 0
@nicktee89: Yeah that's limited to the range of bluetooth though. I would think if you're that close to your bikes, you would hear someone taking them anyways. I haven't found a small, reliable gps device that could be hidden somewhere on the bike...
  • 2 0
@jawzzy3: I had one for my car keys, bloody thing was a hassle. Constantly disconnecting with no warning an ate batteries again, no warning when the battery had run out.
They can find stuff anywhere by using any ones phone who has the app but, this depends on every one having the app. I reckon google could come up with a viable system if they wanted
  • 2 1
@nicktee89: as it is easy to find the bike with GPS locator, it is also very easy to find out the bike has one
  • 1 0
@bok-CZ: Good point... What about on with a motion-activated alarm?
  • 2 3
 @nojzilla: Sherlock. Look it up.

Put it in your handlebars it has proximity alarm and GPS tracking.

To make it harder on the thief to remove it use lockon grips and replace the bolt with a tamper proof bolt that needs a special tool to remove it.
  • 2 0
@jawzzy3: that could possibly work if the gps would start running after some motion detected in frame, but not being active when not, so you would need another sensor to detect the motion and then activate GPS, otherwise they can easy find its equipped with a tracking tool.

My mom is using Trackito on her eMTB. This works based on GPS so it will run alarm on your phone when the GPS detects movement, but the in this case the GPS is still running when it is on, so I believe it is easy to find out on the bike. However it is installed in steered tube so taking it out can take some time.

Having the bikes in car overnight...well that is not so good idea, everybody knows. But when stolen from hotel, I would suppose they have bike storage or a space for that which should be under insurance.

Here in Czech if a hotel/restaurant etc have space for bikes/skis/whatever (not only bike storage, let´s say even a coat hanger in restaurant) and something happens, it is their responsibility then as they "pushed" you to use it.
  • 1 0
@reverend27: and you can buy GPS jammer for around 60 bucks
  • 1 0
@bok-CZ: Hotels here with bike valets have liability release disclaimers iirc. So if bike gets stolen, they'll at least attempt to dodge responsibility. Don't know how well it would hold in court though. I'll check out Trackito, cheers!
  • 2 1
@bok-CZ: and you get an alarm to your phone the minute it is touched.

The alarm would have been sent far before they could gotten all the bikes out.

@reverend27: Sherlock needs to open up shop in the great white north!

  • 1 0
@reverend27: thief just ditches the handle bars
  • 1 0
@nojzilla: how is he removing the handlebars without setting off the motion detector?
  • 1 0
An this the problem with bikes, as opposed cars motor bikes even mobilitE bikes. Professional Thieves are good at what they do, they know all the security systems an the ways around them. An with bikes it's simply a case of finding the tracker device an getting rid of it. Hell, thieves will even cut through a frame that's weaker than the strongest lock to strip the bike for thousands worth of €£$ parts.
  • 1 0
@reverend27: with the jammer which you have in pocket the signal is screwed before they even get two meters or more around, just saying...
  • 1 0
Sorry, its 10 meters with the 60 bucks one
  • 1 0
@nojzilla: exactly, look at that, they haven't used a grinder because of too much noise, shears... That means they were ready pretty well
  • 6 0
No alarms on the vans then?
never ever EVER! leave bikes unattended in a van or anywhere!
even when I'm asleep in a tent next to my car the bikes are locked with multiple locks to as many solid anchor points as possible.
  • 2 0
Same here. Can never be too carefull.
  • 3 1
Just brought my bike into the Airbnb. And I purposely took it off the rack, and put it inside my car when I rolled into town. No need to go flaunting my fancy bike to the locals, which is exactly what these pros are doing.
  • 8 0
When will people learn to never leave bikes in a van overnight?
  • 6 0
Damn...So they cut through the metal of the side door, peeled open the fake window and then opened the door from the inside?
  • 2 0
 Looks like it.
Sheet metal cutter? Damn thats next Level.
  • 1 0
Actually, the part that I don’t get is why on the first picture of the van, the damage to the door is much bigger than on the 2nd and 3rd picture. Why would they damage it even more?
  • 1 0
@cvoc: it‘s not the same car.
  • 3 1
Those Mexicans move quick! (This is a jab at a couple stupid users that commented on Jesse melamed's stolen bike article.) The mentality of thieving does not discriminate on race or location, btw I'm from Mexican descent. But back to joking, I believe those "bad hombres" in Mexico sold the transitions and Rocky bike, got plane tickets to Europe so they can hit the big leagues.
  • 2 0
Most of the comments here seem to think that those bikes will be sold on for lots of money.

The sad fact is they’re likely to be sold on for only a couple of hundred at the most. So a crap paint job won’t mean anything.

As a few have pointed out very likely stripped for the parts and the frames in the bottom of a canal somewhere.
  • 1 0
 I feel for you Danny,
However if it were my limited edition, one of a kind, irreplaceable anything, it would be kept in sight at all times and definitely not left in an auto.

And since this same thing happened to Mr. Gwin....well umm...you get the point.

Oh yeah, and F$#k thieves, bike or otherwise.
  • 3 1
Fucking hell, put a trackers on your bikes people !!! In the UK this is the third major theft this year, has no one learned something, this starts to look more like organised crime targeting famous people...
  • 1 0
Super shitty human beings in this world. But as a pro biker with very expensive bikes you should know to keep your shit locked down and alarmed. Not saying this would've kept them from being stolen, but it definitely would have deterred the thieves.

I really like Pedal House of Laramie, WY's slogan: "We Still Hang Bike Thieves in Wyoming".
  • 1 0
I had a bike stolen from my car overnight. It was hidden by a cover so probably followed from trails or something. I still can't work out how someone can only smash the rear window and remove a large 29er out of a car without an alarm being triggered. Vehicle manufacturers need to step up their security as well as us. Insurance company wouldn't cover it because it wasn't attached to anything! In fact they said it would've been covered if chained to a lampost!
  • 2 0
Sentry Mode on Teslas is brilliant, and has been catching loads of vandals - check out the YT videos. I'd like to see it standard on all vehicles.
  • 1 0
Two things I learned from this, 1. You can use tin snippets to open a van like a tin of bake beens and 2. People will steel anything, I mean it aint like those bike were V10 or Giant bike where they could blend in at any bike paint with fresh paint.
  • 4 0
I’d say bring them into your room, but bikes like that deserve their own room..
  • 1 0
Christ ive thought my bikes to be safe in the back of my van, when parked off road at a decent hotel or bb. Always chained to the van as well. But it looks like these cnuts had the tools & would have cut through any sort of locks. How the hell did they do that without making noise?
  • 2 0
That is some serious ball baggery to peel open a van like that. Bike theft happens here but is more opportunist type of thing, might snip a lock & take someones bike off a rack. Going after a van like that is next level.
  • 1 0
Not in the uk it’s not. Pretty run of the mill.

Its probably pretty easy to find out where these guys and all their bikes and stuff are via good ol social media. All you people posting everything you do and where youre doing it at is pretty dumb considering theres probably some scumbag studying when and where youre going to be to jack your shit!

It could be so simple. Hidden gps for exactly this, within the frame. You're sponsored for god sake. They could make it happen for emergency next day use, to find and punish these pricks.
