OMG NO HELMET AT 5 MINUTES IN! CUE THE PB HELMET WARRIORS!!!!! HIS CAREER IS OVER!!!!

This might be an insensitive thing to say and I expect the downvotes to come flowing in... but..

What's the story with Dylan's seeming "lack of success?" He is awesome to watch, has some sweet edits, and does stuff that no one else would think of, but I saw on his instagram he is "selling everything [he] owns" including most of his bike stuff due to being "broke". Seems curious that he hasn't ever been picked up by any of the big sponsors or been more successful on two wheels..?

Just kind of thinking out loud..
  • 15 2
Well, there is little $$$ in BMX, but a huge demand for the latest. He can't do a backflip and get paid.

His skills set is beyond insane, as shown. Based on present day MTB (e.g. 'pro' level skidding and turning, and some derailuer slow mos,), he could use 1/800th of his bike talent on a big bike, be top tier and hopefully get paid.
  • 1 0
 I have also wondered this.
  • 41 5
Probably his image and immaturity. I bet im gunna get down voted but you dont see someone like brendog or gwin or even ratboy drinking and smoking and carrying around a dead bug for a two weeks. Still a super talented guy
  • 10 3
He’s got plenty issues sponsors don’t want to be attached to. Except weedmaps. I doubt any bike company wants their logo next to weedmaps logo.
  • 12 2
He is too real/rad to be a full-time racer or full-time brand ambassador/shill. If you follow his IG (good stuff there) he has his own brand dylanstarkmerch.com and a hookup from the YT Family for big-wheeled bikes. This is just my opinion.
  • 3 1
@jjwillTOmaui: That's my point though, he does have a lot of MTB edits that showcase how good he is and it hasn't seemed to help that much besides the two bikes he got from YT, one of which was on offer-up last I checked.
  • 22 1
Partly because he's been through a transition phase from BMX to MTB and this industry is slow to pick up those guys IMO. Also because he lives in So-Cal and the house he was living in was sold out from under him. For many years he was a pro BMX'er and had a full set of sponsors, recently Stranger. Even then though, he wasn't making the BMX big bucks because he didn't do many competitions. Stranger dropped him and he started riding MTB more over the last two years. Just recently has he really become known to the MTB community, and he's a really laid-back dude and just lets his riding do the talking, so I'm not surprised it's taken time for him to get noticed, but I'm still sad and dumbfounded that he doesn't have a full-ride yet. IMO Dylan is one of the most talented and versatile bike riders in the world, and I still think he is CRIMINALLY underrated.
  • 4 0
@jjwillTOmaui: I don't think that's totally true- I think there is little money in some circles in BMX but there are certainly more deep pockets floating around then say MTB when you consider X-games, Vans, and some other giants funding the sport that MTB doesn't have. Kinda like skateboarding- just because there are deep pockets in the industry doesn't mean the gnarliest guy gets the most money. I love watching Dylan ride, it is so raw and reminds me of stuff from early MTB but with that insane BMX bike control added in. Hope he finds a way to make his passion and skill pay the bills!

@freeridejerk888: pretty sure the stigma on weed is waning...I mean it's legal in 11 states.
Also his other activities r pretty normal and just plain entertaining to watch (imo). Maybe he needs more success in more contests? Dunno, but there's no doubt the dude shreds, I've been following for years.
  • 45 1
I think the general consensus is that someone with the skill set such as Dylan has should have industry support regardless if he likes to party or not. It’s a slap in the face to see people out there basically digital panhandling driving around in loaded vans who are not doing anything to push the sport forward. Mtb’ing needs more loose cannons!!!
  • 73 3
He’s way too legit for mountain biking the sports been hijacked by coffee wankers and dentists. He’d have been a legend in the 90’s.

 @snl1200:

" I think there is little money in some circles in BMX but there are certainly more deep pockets floating around then say MTB when you consider X-games, Vans, and some other giants funding the sport that MTB doesn't have. "

Haha, what? There is NO money in BMX. It's completely self contained compared to other "action sports." 45 year old dads go buy Specialized Enduros, kids get their parents to buy them Quicksilver and ONeal hats and shirts so they can look like a surfer. Nobody is out there buying Cult shirts because they saw a Dakota Roche edit, or buying an S&M frame, everything in BMX only exists within BMX, which is why it's a cool scene, but on the other hand it's the reason even insane pros are probably lucky to make $30k a year and squeak by not having a side job.

You must be crazy. So many of the van life people have pushed our sport into the eyes of many more people than some balls to the wall hucker. Yes non of them do as crazy shit but they are well spoken people with great images. I can show skills with phil or seth bikes to anyone. Remember seth started riding late in life and for lack of s better term is some nerdy little long island jew who now is a great rider. People spend hours watching them create content that the average joe can relate to. I love the metal AF image more than the next guy but as someone whos repoing my brand im gunna go with the single track sampler even tho he’s intolerable
  • 5 0
Obviously, the dude rips. In terms of bmx, he isn’t the most stand out rider though. There is a ton of kids with gnarly tricks in the bmx world. If he makes more of a transition into mtb, I think he may see more success. Not many people are flairing DH bikes and 3’ing crabapple hits. Who knows what will happen though. He seems to have a sizable following. Maybe more companies might be down to hook him up. I’d love to see him ride freeride stuff more often.
  • 1 0
@GorgeousBeauGaston: for sure a lot of BMX is more "core" and low budget. It is a way more accessible sport- like skateboarding- where the buy in can be a lot cheaper and it can be done pretty much anywhere. That said, I still believe that for some guys out there, like the Vans Procup tour guys or the x-games guys there is a bit of money up for grabs but that doesn't translate down to most pros. I agree though that in general the opportunities for most pros to live comfortably or even make a living off of it is not there- but that is true also for MTB. Neither sport earns anything close to top Moto or Skate athletes. I think the "real" world of BMX is fairly esoteric but would argue that the pop understanding of BMX is pretty wide spread and most kids first bikes are BMX's... though likely crappy ones and not the ones you are referencing.
  • 5 1
@nickgarrison: the fact that he didnt blow the hell up after the crab apple 3 is insane.
  • 7 2
I can see his versatility being a detriment to be honest. Who should sponsor him, an MTB brand or a BMX brand?

Not a whole lot of companies have a strong enough presence in both to see the value in sponsoring a rider who splits their time between the two. Additionally he rides some risky stuff, so if you're a BMX company, how much money do you really want to invest in a rider who not only spends half his time on an MTB, but could be seriously injured while riding that MTB and wind up having to pay out a contract to an injured rider who's delivered nothing of value to your BMX centered brand? Same issue if an MTB company sponsors him and he mangles himself on a BMX bike.

Sure there are companies in both markets, but without the frame sponsor, the other ones seem to be a lot harder to come by. BMX is generally easier to get a clothing or shoe deal that pays the bills, but again, who's investing in a BMX rider that only rides BMX half the time? From a marketing standpoint a slightly less skilled rider that will give you non stop BMX content is a better investment.

Lastly, and this really only applies to the MTB side of things, his riding isn't all that relateible to most of people. For some reason that's a big deal in MTB markets, hence the popularity of Enduro as far as racing goes and guys like Phil Kmetz, and Ratboy in the social media world, and historicly when has a pure freerider ever gotten paid well? They ride bikes like normal people ride, on trails normal people ride, but do it on an insanely high level. Starks shreds a halfpipe on a DH bike, which I think is far more entertaining than another Ratboy edit full of skids and nose bonks, but I'm in the minority on that, and the dumb skidding videos sell a lot more bikes than really innovative stuff like riding a skatepark on a DH bike.
  • 23 3
@GorgeousBeauGaston: it’s very similar to downhill where only the top ten WC racers are making real money. Just trade WC’s for the X games.

@freeridejerk888 yeah these wholesome Youtubers and van life influencers are what’s wrong with the sport. Literally every single one of them is a complete narcissist who’s only in it for themselves and care more about views and likes than pretty much anything else. To me mountain biking will always be an outlaw sport where we dig and ride in places where they say we’re not allowed or where they say it isn’t safe. It’s about freedom and riding somewhere nobody’s ever been or doing something that’s never been done before or building something that’s never been built before. f*ck your trail dogs Instagram account. Wink haha
  • 10 1
@freeridejerk888: But they're all the same, and boring AF.
  • 16 3
@thenotoriousmic: exactly. the instagram youtube wave has really killed the sport for me. Everyone is the exact same boring white "adventure loving" unskilled person. you just strap as much new gear to yourselves and take a bunch of instagrams or gopro a legal, well known trail and thats the only people really getting any support anymore. Riders like dylan stark and paul genovese are the ones keeping it alive in my opinion. Doing what they want to do.
  • 4 2
@luckynugget: Instagram and Youtube are just tools and you can curate your own content on them. Both the riders you mention have great Instagram accounts BTW.

A ton of observations. Dylan's the type of personality and talent that could single handed remove the douche factor from MTB. If you get a paycheck from skidding, and 30 different slow angles from a nosebonk or over shooting jumps, dudes like Dylan might make 2020 difficult. Glad to see real skill on a wheel size over 20 inches.
  • 7 0
Not sure who you're referring to there tbh. But yeah Dylan fuckin rocks.
  • 3 4
@JamesGTi: who? You mean MTB douche factor?

It's maybe a harsh comment - I'm lightening up for 2020 - but most of the over exposed 'talent' with big bikes is beyond bland.

I watch some vids and can only think about the glam rock factor, vs actually style and skill, and a sense of community, etc etc...

Dudes who have cut their teeth in the fickle BMX market, and have worked to make a name for themselves are a positive.

MTB Safety First Father Figures cannot handle this. He sends massive stuff on a BMX with bare elbows! He doesn’t even wear Bell Super helmet!!! No! Noooo! What is a better complimentary exercise for BMX riding? Yoga or Crossfit? Which BMX is beat to start with? Street or dirt? Which is better to learn manuals on? Is he on Strava? I have a fckng Lame Mountain Biker syndrome. Sorry. i apologize, my bike is carbon and there is Wt on my tires. Good for wide rims, because wide rims are good. How wide rimsshould I get for BMx?  @mkotowski1: how dare you?! I spent thousands of hours pedaling, I remember John Tomac and Tinker Juarez, I owned a Schwinn, what do you think you know about being cool! What do these reckless unemployed bastards know? They ride their baby bikes and smoke weed, and drink cheap beer, and hang out with friends, and meet girls from bad homes, a kind that jumps into your pants on the second date... horrible... I was an early 650B adopter damn it! I owned two Gravity Droppers! I ordered a Geometron with EXT and Trust fork! Respect me! God damn it!!!

Riding out that 360 on Crabapple hits was basically not physically possible. Holy smokes.

I have only hit that jump twice and it scared the shit out of me. I can't image over rotating a 360 and staying cool enough to ride it out without bailing at 370 degrees and still off the ground. Dude is a beast.

The MTB world needs more dudes like this. Insane talent and skills and the not give a f*ck attitude, just doing what he loves. Unlike so many of the douche bag you tubers and their channels where they only give a damn about the amount of views they’re getting & dollars they’re generating.

Versatile AF. Hands down the most underrated, un-sponsored rider out there. Some of the shit he's done is iconic and it's crazy to me that brands won't risk it on this guy. But he also needs to wake the fuck up and stop playing dead scorpions.

Get this kid some good sponsors. That dude is broke af and he got the talent and the send for rampage and so on. So please sponsor that kid
  • 6 0
 dylanstarkmerch.com just buy his merch
  • 2 0
The fans should support him, instead of pointing at the industry. Go buy his merch, (I bought a shirt, the food stamp card one). His following should support his dream if the industry ain't stepping up because of apparent (assumption's from posts above) image and attitude issues. Would be a way to give the finger to any uptight gatekeepers in the industry that drinks "fresh brew" coffee from their anus. ;D

Refreshing to hear some old school punk rock on the sound track even if it is NOFX and Offspring. Curious of the sandy looking landing on his last huge roof huck. Anyone know exactly what is going on in the landing to make the huge huck happen? Big props!

Fuck yes! This is what I like to see. Sick style, fun to watch, gnar factor.

Have been aware of Dylan's talent for several years. Unscrew the nut on his training wheels till it fell off.
  • 6 0
What I mean to say "I turned the retaining nut on his training wheel and it fell off and he kept riding." He has been riding MTB for over twenty years as the two of us used to ride around El Toro. He was probably 11 or 12 when he won his first two gold medals at a NORBA National at Snow Summit in down hill and dual slalom. One item that is rarely mentioned is that he does his own filming and editing. I bought him a video camera at an early age and his own computer and he was making decent stuff in grade school.

Hucks to flat and general gnarlyness are great, but the dumped three invert thing at 1:05 was the best thing in that video.

wasn't that just a table backflip?
