As one of the few brands still making an entire lineup of exclusively hardtails, the UK's Ragley Bikes has developed a carefully curated catalog of frames for all sorts of hardtail enthusiasts. That catalog just got a full refresh for the 2023 model year, with changes to geometry, colors, and clear intentions for each model.

photo
A quick rundown of the broader changes.

Geometry-wise, things have evolved slightly without going too extreme. It's all the same tweaks we've grown used to seeing in the industry, with slacker head tube angles, steeper seat tube angles, and lower bottom brackets. Reaches have grown quite a bit, and as a result so have the wheelbases. Longer headtubes should keep fit proportional, with other frame elements changing to better suit specific wheel sizes.

Availability

Aluminum frames are now with dealers, and all steel variants will be available in mid-June.

Ragley is still struggling with some supply chain issues post-pandemic, so the 2023 lineup will only be available as frames. 2022 completes can still be purchased though, so maybe you could reap the build kit from one of those.

Colors for the new year.

One model is set to head off into the sunset this year, so it's time to say farewell to the Piglet. The short-travel 27.5" trail bike may be back in a different guise in the future though, so don't go searching the Hundred Acre Wood quite yet.

The Trig gravel bike is the only model not to see updates this year.

You can learn more about the specific models and updates at Ragley's website.

Years back my son and I built him up a silver black mmmbop I think it was. All hand me down parts from dusty shoe boxes. Except he was fascinated with those new Aaron Gwinn grips. He bought those and promptly ground them into burger. Man he ripped on that bike. Brings back great memories. Still got the frame hanging on the wall waiting for another dad wanting to build it up for his kid.

26"? My son is 11 and ready to move off this 24", he rips pretty good on a hardtail. Let me know what you want for it.

Thanks

@wydopen: 275 but my son went from 24 right to 275. By 11 he was pretty good and doing real tech and all. There is no longer much of quality for a hard riding kid in 26” that I could find, and I had 275 parts like wheels, forks, tires. 26” would have been a big layout in cash for a tiny window. Pretty sure my son was way less than 11 when he got on it. If interested shipping cost is all I’d want. I’m on the Atlantic side. If it didn’t work out you could sell it yourself. Seemed standover wasn’t that much different from any 26 I could find. It’s a small or XS. My son was of average size.

some good dads right there ^^

@MikerJ: that would be awesome. I have two more kids, one on a 20” and one on a balance bike so it will get used for years to come..My sons small for his age but a small or Xs will work good. He rips around and hits jumps on my XL. Zip is 93111, pm me your PayPal and I’ll send you whatever it costs. No rush on sending it. Thank you I really appreciate it. I’ve been looking for awhile and there wasn’t many used frames that I was excited about. Hard to spend a bunch of money on a frame that they will grow out of relatively quickly.

@Chondog94: Dads being dads. Cheers !

Picked up a’22 Mmmbop a couple of months ago. It’s a blast.
Rode a small local enduro last weekend, I double entered to race the ebike class and age group class on the Mmmbop.

Total time on the E was just over 11 minutes, 55sec faster than the Single speed Mmmbop.

So same day, same rider, same stages, Mmmbop is a f*ckin weapon!!!

Hey Ragley, How about some single speed dropouts?
  • 4 3
Never understood SS dropouts. Why not run a sexy spring tensioner? Much easier for wheel swaps. Less complicated than sliders. No tight/loose spots on slightly oval cog and chainrings.
  • 5 0
@speed10: to each their own, but IMO the tensioner is definitely _not_ sexy. I love the lack of extraneous parts on a SS, and having a chain tensioner hanging out detracts from that.
  • 1 0
@SS-in-VT: please though, tell me, wouldn’t you consider the complexity of sliding dropouts to be greater than a spring tensioner?
  • 4 0
@speed10: no, I never would have before and I don't think I'm convinced now, either, but it's an interesting POV. Not mad at it, either.

2022s are all around 40% off on CRC...
  • 3 0
 This should be the headline!
  • 3 0
Plus shipping - to US, frames add $169 and full bikes $349. Still decent, but something to consider.
  • 13 0
Yes but have you considered this: CRC's new website is f*cking awful?
  • 4 0
@boozed: they had to cut corners somewhere to get prices this low, so Cheryl from HR got her nephew to do their web design.
  • 1 0
I bought a blue pig race a few years ago and have been really impressed with the build kit: 160 lyrick, SLX/XT and Nukeproof. It's significantly cheaper than I paid on CRC right now@ $2700 CDN / 1850 USD. Probably the cheapest way to get a sub 5K complete without Sram NX garbage is to buy this (or a similar) HT, ride it and then combine with an opportunistic frame-only purchase at some point over the next year or two.
  • 3 0
@plyawn: Truth, except I’m having so much fun on my HT I wouldn’t want to cannibalize it to build up a fully.
  • 2 0
@boozed: Yep...I started a thread about it on that other MTB review site when it happened.

The trig looks like my dad's bike from the early 90's

Been wanting a Ragley hardtail for a while now. Love the purple color and everything about the brand.

Just buy one, now, the internet has spoken

I built a Marley for my son a couple of years ago and I was surprised how light it was and how solid it was for the money. Plus you can't beat a bike with an actual headtube badge, it is pretty cool.

My 2020 Mmmbop is an absolute riot.
  • 3 0
Can confirm 100%! Frame was 299.-EUR in 2020. This thing puts a smile on my face with every ride.
  • 3 0
They are awesome frames, and great to see them updated to go with the trend. Zero complaints with my big al, especially once overforked and with an angleset. Thing is a monster at the bike parks.
  • 2 0
My 2021 Blue Pig frame is awesome. Kudos to the UK frame brands that went long and slack years ago. I do recall when I bought it CRC’s shipping charge to US was like $50 and CRC took care of import duties. I think I paid $350 total for the frame on sale.

Mr. Disquiglio, The geometry chart is more blurry than my vision after a threshold effort. Please advise.
  • 4 0
I've become so numb to ridiculous frame pricing that the 350GBP Marley frame seems like a steal
  • 5 0
I've been hardtail shopping recently and was amazed to see that Surly framesets are going for $1000 these days. The trig is steel with a carbon fork and goes for ~$800, I'd say they are decently priced.

I was strongly considering Ragley frame for my do it all mountain hardtail. Went with Banshee but still want one for the fun-bike, those are good frames.
  • 1 0
I got a 2019 Mmmbop with a 170mm MRP Ribbon, magura mt7, deore drivetrain, and Nukeproof horizon V2 wheels. Such a fun bike! Can hold its own pretty well and if you out the right tires on it will also climb quite well. Endless fun!
  • 1 0
the HT / 12spd combos climb insane, and I've been super-impressed with the Nukeproof wheels (though the engagement is so quick it's hard to revert)
  • 1 0
my 2020 mmmbop frame started with an older non-boost fox 140/160mm adjustable fork, then i put a boost 155mm MRP ribbon on it. so good! except i'm on 10 speed with a 36 tooth rear cassette. lol

As a former owner of a 2022 Big Al - I think the geometry change on the Big Al is not a good move. The previous version was an absolutely phenomenal riding bike. I think one of the reasons it was so phenomenal was because the frame were made from peanut butter aluminum. Man... it was an awesome bike for for hundred miles I rode it. Not sure if they sorted out the frame quality, hopefully they did. Unfortunately, the the new geometry turns the Big Al into Big NO. And the drop out screws - terrible. But once you use some red Loctite they are good to go - unless you strip out the butter metal.
  • 3 0
Then buy the Marley 29 which is basically the old Big Al. Simples.
  • 4 0
 Geo chart is unreadable

Loved my 2021 Marley I built up. Good quality frame that rode well.
  • 1 0
That's exactly what they need, a shorter seat tube. Superb frames, I love my 21' Marley.

I know this’ll get downvoted but i wish some company like ragley would do proper long reach super slack hardtail ebikes.
As a e hardtail owner i know they’re a bit shit in the gnarly stuff but as an off road commuter with rack n panniers they rule.
Problem is all the ones on the market have pretty conservative geometry.
  • 3 0
ok, but why would you want a super slack commuter with a rack and panniers?
  • 2 0
@hardtailpunter: cos i commute via the scenic route!
  • 1 0
long travel steel hardtail? hell yeah. I still have an old steel Transition Transam in my lineup!
  • 2 0
 NO MULLETS!!??!!
  • 6 0
Get the Mmmbop or Blue Pig frame and run a 29" front wheel with a corresponding 130mm or 140mm fork. Geometry should be unchanged.
  • 1 0
Can’t quite tell, no sliding dropout?
  • 2 1
 Cable bosses under downtube whyyyyyy?
  • 3 0
That’s where they are on my hardtail and I’ve not damaged them once in 3 years of abuse.
  • 2 0
This was one of my few concerns, but haven't had any problems over a few years. One reason is it's hard to run the remote for the seatpost on a steel frame. Small consolation: the cable attachment uses very clean, threaded retainers.

 Still no UDH?
