2017 EWS Finals: Finale Ligure, Italy - Practice Photo Epic

This is it. This is the end. After battling rain, more rain, high altitude, Tasmanian Devils, twenty-minute stages, rain again, scorching heat, and foreign dirt spread over trails on foreign lands, we have come to the grand finale of the 2017 Enduro World Series. In the place with the perfect name for such a momentous occasion: Finale Ligure.

Riders have given their sweat, they have given their blood, and of course, their tears of joy and sorrow over the past seven months to make it here. Some in one piece and others with their bodies in need of various repairs after a very long season. To say it has been hard would be an understatement as this year's Enduro World Series was a test like no other, and those who emerge from this final battle can without a doubt call themselves champions of the world.

While some titles are wrapped up at the sharp end, the remaining podium spots are very much up for grabs. Especially in the Pro Men's category where the coveted top step is still to play for, in a race where every point will count. Who will tame the rough mountains high above Finale, and who will smooth out the awkward woods and ancient stone walls hidden below? Who has the strength and stamina for the long liaisons with their steep climbs? And who will arrive at the sea first to claim their crown? Only the time will tell...

It s hard to believe that this is the home base for some truly amazing riding and racing.

Commencal knows a thing or two about paintjobs ( or lack of). Between this murdered out black Meta, the raw aluminium, the NZ edition with maori graphics many companies should take notes! Go Cecile!!!!

Yeah! I would love to see Steve Peat do well there too. We're really getting to see some great characters in Enduro racing who left DH racing for whatever reason. Even Josh Bryceland is competing more than I expected after last year.

 Some cracking photo's in there.

I think the sheer numbers of riders from other disciplines, plus retired DH legends (Ratboy, Peat, etc) speaks volumes about the organisation and overall experience of the EWS - it's clearly a lot of fun and a little bit special. Whilst the sharp end is massively competitive there are so many there for a good time, and the series is much better for it...

Come on Peaty!

Funny how Ratboy is retired being only 27 Smile

More bikes should be polished aluminum. Looks so great in the sun.
  • 2 0
I think YT does a paint job that makes their carbon frames look like polished aluminium. That said, there was definitely a time when this was more common. Also just because they found out that polished aluminium is lighter than coated aluminium. Honda used to do it but there definitely were more.
  • 2 0
@vinay: I had a 95 Cannondale that was polished Al and my 2001 SC Chameleon is polished Al, but I came here to ask if Casey Brown is still racing EWS?
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: A friend used to do it with a weight weenie GT Zaskar. Every now and then he needed to polish it. I didn't get what it was all about. I was riding a powdercoated alu frame with a 35 spoke rear wheel (snapped one and it was still straight enough for me). We were definitely on a different bandwidth with respect to component choice and maintenance. That said, polishing seems to me like a horrible and pretty useless job (except for the looks maybe). A metal like aluminium naturally builds an oxide layer that seals it against further corrosion. If you remove that (through polishing), it will then sacrifice a tiny amount of structural material to create a new skin.
  • 1 0
@vinay: I hear you - I never put any effort into keeping them polished. I like a duller look anyway.
  • 1 0
@vinay: maybe ten years back the Mercedes F-1 team came out with a paint they called 'Alubeam' which looked like liquid metal; that has probably trickled down to other manufacturers by now. Commencal has a few models that are bare polished metal too. Why do it, other than a hundred grams of weight savings? Because it looks like nothing else, at least while its new.

 @Coyotecrash:
Do you know Sam Hill?
  • 1 0
@dh1stan: I can't really see that in the picture, but is Martin Maes riding clipped in or with platforms?
  • 7 0
I'm not going to lie, Sam Hill was the reason I stopped hating on Enduro. Plus the EWS seems to be much better run than the UCI. I don't think DH is on a downward trend, but man if they left and formed say 'DHWS' I think they could really make it something awesome. Also throw 4x in there for good measure!
  • 2 0
@vinay: CB Mallet E (so clipped in)
  • 1 0
@yeti951SD: i don't think it's better run, look how pro dh wc is. If you are referring to the administration of the sport generally then maybe, although it sounds like ews has its fair share of issues as well. Both would take an epic amount of work.
I'm surprised hill is the only guy on flats, get it done!
  • 1 0
@russthedog: "better" is always a bit vague but I believe that if athletes leave competition whilst at the very top because they don't like the races, there is something very wrong. I've heard this from UCI WC DH and UCI WC 4X racing, but I haven't heard this about the EWS yet. One can argue that for DH racing the tracks have changed because live broadcast has become more important but then again if live broadcast is so important, how come they blew it with the 4X worlds this year? Riders seem genuinely excited about the EWS and the 4X pro tour has some amazing races which blow the UCI 4X worlds out of the water. So yeah not everything has to be perfect but by "better" I suppose fun and enthusiasm should definitely be part of it. And I feel the UCI is losing that.
  • 1 0
@vinay: its a valid point - im just a spectator though and i dont see droves going anywhere, just a few cases. Theres absolutely no doubt the wc dh is a better career than ews atm so id agree with you it should be viewed seriously if anyone is leaving. Also i wouldnt even know if most people left the ews - im only aware of a dozen riders perhaps. The ones that have left that im aware of have all retired - leov, barel, nico, gracia (kinda), mosely
