The rules on engagement.

As the first big race of the season, there's always a few interesting bits and bobs to check out at the Andes Pacifico. Here's a rundown of the best tech we've spotted so far out in Chile.

Wyn Masters looks more like Randy “macho man” Savage every year. He needs to commit fully to the look and conduct interviews in that manner.

WTF is a "Link preload tool"?
  • 7 0
That is the question of the day!
  • 8 0
And is it sticking out of the seat stays by the seat tube? Looks like a good opportunity to get some stitches....
  • 3 0
I think they're used to fit links onto axle splines, for particular frames. They remind me of those threaded crank arm pullers, except they remove what's fitted.
  • 34 0
 I own this bike,

The tool is only used for constructing/deconstructing the linkage for service etc.

No reason for it to be on there when riding, mines been in the box since it got it. No idea why he has it on there or why they’ve photographed it.
  • 4 0
 @russbates: thanks for explaining!
  • 3 0
I think it helps with the Pole Stamina

Wonder why that Slash doesn't have the reaktiv shock? And the Ransom doesn't have the Nude one!? hmmm
  • 21 4
Cause Tru-shaft kinda sucks and isn't very reliable for a week long race

I assume that Remy Absalon is sponsored by SR Suntour, which is why the Nude and Twinloc stuff isn't on his bike.

Impossible to keep the oil inside and has no small bump sensitivity.. No brainer...

 Exactly!

@Whipperman: True. Now if they had a non-thru shaft, piggy-back shock with reaktiv... :-)

If I made twice the money of a dentist I would buy a Pole frame mount it on a turntable in my living room. The Lazer guided video cameras would project close up images of the machining on my living room wall.
  • 19 1
Of all those things, the one that I would like to have is the top tube Garmin mount!
  • 15 2
Easy to DIY. Take a standard Garmin quarter turn mount, hold it on a grinding wheel to make the base flat and get rid of the band lugs, get a 3M UHB double sided foam pad cut to size and stick it down. Always loop the safety string around the cables just in case. Ran mine like that for all of last season and only knocked it off once in a pretty decent crash (safety string kept it attached to the bike).

When I saw the pic I was sure it was a bottle opener.

No pisco no disco sticker is the winning one for me.
  • 4 1
@bacondoublechee: never grind aluminum! It’ll bugger up any grinding wheel instantly. Use a sander.
  • 2 1
@bogey: standard Garmin mount is plastic not aluminium.
  • 1 1
 @bacondoublechee: plastic is even worse!
  • 1 0
Agreed, I want a Knock Block Garmin mount @trek
  • 3 0
 @MrDiamondDave: Just get a K-Edge. Works great.
  • 1 1
@bogey: grinding aluminum with the wrong type of wheel can cause the wheel to explode... easy fix tho just use a wheel made for aluminum.... also plastic will make mess but won't hurt anything.

Interested in the Lyrik Ultimate. Saw one locally this weekend, and looks like Jerome is running one as well.

@frOErider: I remember when they were doing the V1 carbon V10 and their web guy built the page and hid it with comments in the html from the nav tree. Marianno was stoked to get an email with screen shots. Glad web design has progressed.

@frOErider: These guys make a living showing us only what the manufacturer wants us to see.
  • 1 0
Someone asked about the Lyrik Ult. on the post and Yoann said it had a better damper.
  • 2 0
 @frOErider: wait a few weeks..
  • 1 2
@frOErider: Santa Cruz is still selling plenty of HTLT to people who can’t ride and they are afraid the new bike will be bought by people who would have bought the new v10. With the V10 pushed back....

They are going to be pulled kicking and screaming in to the present and on their terms.
  • 2 0
@wibblywobbly: "Santa Cruz is still selling plenty of HTLT to people who can’t ride..." because of the weather? Even cold here in California haha.

And you're right, I don't think we'll see a Megatower/Highertower until Sea Otter.

When they've won countless races, been photographed on top pros bikes, been hyped beyond belief, and then eventually surpassed by it's competitors and rendered obsolete. Then, and only then will they release them, in comically limited numbers and only in certain markets. And the public won't get the pro-spec rubber compound. And they'll be $100 a pop.
  • 2 0
Came here to ask the same thing! desperate for them after trying the wild enduros!
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: just ask for the "gilet jaune"?
  • 2 0
if they are better then the latest. My one month ridden Front Wild Enduro is just cracking up.
  • 3 0
@Serpentras: Which rubber compound and what's so funny?
  • 8 0
@Boardlife69: I want these tire quite badly and I have a pitch fork, so when would you like to meet? I may also need a ride to their headquaters as im not sure where it is ! I am also cheap and will not be helping out with gas money ! Smile
  • 5 0
@rockchomper: I just got a pitchfork too. Eager to use it but it doesn't have a wooden handle (fiberglass)...are those allowed?

They find it funny because they need warranty.
  • 1 0
@Serpentras: Holy craps, this looks like Schwalbe Magic Mary a few years back... I have the latest Addix ones and they no longer look like that. Anyone having experience like this with current ones?
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: The interesting thing is that the big ass side knobs don't have that problem.
I hope I have just the exception because I really like those tires. But they are hell of a workout if your only on fire roads uphill you really notice the difference even when the weight is the same to others.
The rear rubber is really not a hard compound what I find odd because this is the EWS race tire?! Other than those cracks they are puncture proof for me, set and forget it.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: @Serpentras: I have the Wild Enduro in Gum-X and they barely show wear in 2 months. Super happy with them so far.
  • 14 6
â€śLoose Dog going for the flat pedals at all times, no matter the amount of climbing.” Who the hell still thinks flat pedals aren’t good for climbing?
  • 31 3
 anyone whos climbed with clips
  • 6 0
People who like to ride flats and dont care about climbing. Or maybe this is just me..
  • 2 2
People who understand that BikeJames doesn't know what the hell he's talking about?
  • 2 1
@LeDuke: BikeJames obviously knows what he's talking about much better than you do! After about fifteen years of using clipless pedals, I am more and more convinced of this every time I ride with my Catalysts. You don't build such a pool of people who are happy with the improvement in the quality of their riding, totally convinced and ready to say all the good things they think about these pedals, by selling snake oil!
  • 1 3
Let me know when someone that has to pedal hard, uphill, wins anything of consequence on flats. I’ll be waiting.
  • 2 0
@LeDuke: I haven't really looked into this particular race and I realize there is a lot of evolution in enduro racing, but are their many timed sections here with a considerable amount of climbing?
  • 1 0
@LeDuke: Yes, of course, everyone knows that races are won during climbs during liaisons! #asksamhill
  • 9 4
Did anyone else notice that the close up images of that Leigh Johnson's Pole Stamina are actually from a Pole Machine? The photo of the shock mount (piggyback/rebound end) is definitely from a Machine as it doesn't match the yoke found in the main image, same with the smaller diameter seattube...
  • 6 2
It's the Stamina still. Top to bottom, left to right.
1. Leigh with full bike
2. Rear Triangle and Yoke that goes around seat tube
3. Driveside upper pivot link and chainguide top cover
4. Seat tube
5. Machined "top yoke" that attaches to top tube and shock
6. Headtube
7. Other end of the pivot link seen in Shot 3

ep1.pinkbike.org/p5pb16649781/p5pb16649781.jpg
polebicycles.com/stamina

The Stamina still offsets the yoke that connects the shock to the top tube.
  • 14 1
I'm an idiot and looked closer. I take it back, I can't even downvote my own comment.
@NickB01 is a gentleman and a scholar!!!
That seat tube should have been a bigger give-away than it was.

@davetrumpore I trusted you, I can't believe you've done this!
  • 5 1
@Zaff: Photos 3 and 4 are definitely from a different bike (compare it to the main image i.e. image 1), hell the chain is even a different colour.

3. On the Stamina the upper link connects to the shaft, on the Machine they're inverted so the shaft connects to the yoke. Also note the Stamina has a straight top tube, the Machine is curved - hence why I noticed it.

4. Again, compare the logo on the seat tube in this image to the main image and the lack thereof.
  • 6 1
@NickB01: Hahaha, holy shit, the chain as well!!
Can you downvote that so I can at least hide my shame? Big Grin
  • 3 2
@Zaff: it's two bikes... I did not write the feature, just took the pics. I think some info got lost in translation unfortunately

That belt drive has be intrigued!
  • 3 0
I love the look of the belt drive rear pulley, very moto, but I'm curious how the belt stays on laterally, aka: why there aren't side retaining rings like Harley pulleys have?
  • 3 0
I think the central ridge on the chain ring keeps it in place
  • 2 0
@Mattgc: That's right. The belt has a slit down the center that fits over the ridge on the chainring and cog
  • 2 0
Right on, I couldn't see it until you pointed it out. I guess that's what I get for looking at this on my phone at work!
  • 2 0
Alignment front to rear on a belt drive bike is critical. It needs to be straight. The centertrack helps a lot as the old version was known to jump off under heavy loads like racing. Since then the belt has been super reliable. I had my last belt on a race bike for 7 years before I broke it.
  • 6 0
Because even going down the roughest and toughest trails, and piloted by some of the world's fastest rider's that bike will still rattle and shake less than a Harley ????

That's initially what I though. They look a bit more like the Bouwmeester wheels which the Crank Busters wheels were derived from.

Man those Michelin tires look awful with all that yellow on them. Not going to sell a lot without loosing that NASCAR look.
  • 17 2
Your sense of aesthetics is yours. I think they look dope. These are racing tyres, and are not geared toward the legions of muted, olive-drab or flat black and tan SC dental devices.
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: I agree, although I am not a fan of the Michelin tires, I do like the look.
  • 4 3
Ya, I hope that’s for sponsored riders only and not consumer. I don’t buy products to advertise for them. I’d try Michelins but if the graphics are this loud, sorry I’ll buy others
  • 2 0
@Longtravel: I wasn't either, well not since the early 2000s, but the current Wild Enduro Gum-X 2.4 are making me super happy - especially the front.

  • 1 1
No, that's not my bike your thinking of. And if I had Enve's, even more of a reason to not get those Michelin graphics.
  • 1 0
There is a lot more to bikes, than the tyres.
  • 1 0
You're right, they do. Most builds that come to fruition would be dope, until those things were introduced. Devolution.
  • 1 2
So only Jerome is into this no string attached shifting eh.
  • 1 0
Only one able to get it, since he rides for SRAM
  • 5 0
@btjenki: He is a bit bigger than just a "rider" for SRAM. He is a top dog and is one of the first to get prototypes and near release products. Same with XC guys like Nino.
  • 1 0
@Sycip69er: Haha I know my friend. Didn't think it was necessary to lay out his bio. Was just pointing out that he's one of the few that can get AXS right now.
  • 1 0
Maybe they don't yet have the firewalls and whatever you need for that network dialed, so they can have only one rider using it per race. They're just taking turns.

Loosely related, Jerome is seriously attempting to outdo Nico Vink at being the most metal out there. With Slayer doing their last tour (and poor Pat O'Brien not even being able to play because he had some issues with his home) Nico really needs to find some new helmet decoration or he'll forever lose his spot.
