As the first big race of the season, there's always a few interesting bits and bobs to check out at the Andes Pacifico. Here's a rundown of the best tech we've spotted so far out in Chile.

 I think they're used to fit links onto axle splines, for particular frames. They remind me of those threaded crank arm pullers, except they remove what's fitted.

 I own this bike,

The tool is only used for constructing/deconstructing the linkage for service etc.

No reason for it to be on there when riding, mines been in the box since it got it. No idea why he has it on there or why they’ve photographed it.

 If I made twice the money of a dentist I would buy a Pole frame mount it on a turntable in my living room. The Lazer guided video cameras would project close up images of the machining on my living room wall.

 Easy to DIY. Take a standard Garmin quarter turn mount, hold it on a grinding wheel to make the base flat and get rid of the band lugs, get a 3M UHB double sided foam pad cut to size and stick it down. Always loop the safety string around the cables just in case. Ran mine like that for all of last season and only knocked it off once in a pretty decent crash (safety string kept it attached to the bike).

 @bogey: grinding aluminum with the wrong type of wheel can cause the wheel to explode... easy fix tho just use a wheel made for aluminum.... also plastic will make mess but won't hurt anything.

They are going to be pulled kicking and screaming in to the present and on their terms.

 When they've won countless races, been photographed on top pros bikes, been hyped beyond belief, and then eventually surpassed by it's competitors and rendered obsolete. Then, and only then will they release them, in comically limited numbers and only in certain markets. And the public won't get the pro-spec rubber compound. And they'll be $100 a pop.

 @Serpentras: Holy craps, this looks like Schwalbe Magic Mary a few years back... I have the latest Addix ones and they no longer look like that. Anyone having experience like this with current ones?

 @WAKIdesigns: The interesting thing is that the big ass side knobs don't have that problem.
I hope I have just the exception because I really like those tires. But they are hell of a workout if your only on fire roads uphill you really notice the difference even when the weight is the same to others.
The rear rubber is really not a hard compound what I find odd because this is the EWS race tire?! Other than those cracks they are puncture proof for me, set and forget it.

 @LeDuke: BikeJames obviously knows what he's talking about much better than you do! After about fifteen years of using clipless pedals, I am more and more convinced of this every time I ride with my Catalysts. You don't build such a pool of people who are happy with the improvement in the quality of their riding, totally convinced and ready to say all the good things they think about these pedals, by selling snake oil!

 Did anyone else notice that the close up images of that Leigh Johnson's Pole Stamina are actually from a Pole Machine? The photo of the shock mount (piggyback/rebound end) is definitely from a Machine as it doesn't match the yoke found in the main image, same with the smaller diameter seattube...

The Stamina still offsets the yoke that connects the shock to the top tube.

 @Zaff: Photos 3 and 4 are definitely from a different bike (compare it to the main image i.e. image 1), hell the chain is even a different colour.

3. On the Stamina the upper link connects to the shaft, on the Machine they're inverted so the shaft connects to the yoke. Also note the Stamina has a straight top tube, the Machine is curved - hence why I noticed it.

4. Again, compare the logo on the seat tube in this image to the main image and the lack thereof.

 I love the look of the belt drive rear pulley, very moto, but I'm curious how the belt stays on laterally, aka: why there aren't side retaining rings like Harley pulleys have?

 Alignment front to rear on a belt drive bike is critical. It needs to be straight. The centertrack helps a lot as the old version was known to jump off under heavy loads like racing. Since then the belt has been super reliable. I had my last belt on a race bike for 7 years before I broke it.

 Based on my experience, Pedro is going to have alot of unintended screen scrolling due to sweat on that touchscreen :-) Unless i'm wrong and that's not the touchscreen model.

 Man those Michelin tires look awful with all that yellow on them. Not going to sell a lot without loosing that NASCAR look.

 Your sense of aesthetics is yours. I think they look dope. These are racing tyres, and are not geared toward the legions of muted, olive-drab or flat black and tan SC dental devices.

 @btjenki: He is a bit bigger than just a "rider" for SRAM. He is a top dog and is one of the first to get prototypes and near release products. Same with XC guys like Nino.

 Maybe they don't yet have the firewalls and whatever you need for that network dialed, so they can have only one rider using it per race. They're just taking turns.

Loosely related, Jerome is seriously attempting to outdo Nico Vink at being the most metal out there. With Slayer doing their last tour (and poor Pat O'Brien not even being able to play because he had some issues with his home) Nico really needs to find some new helmet decoration or he'll forever lose his spot.
