Italy welcomes the UCI Enduro World Cup this weekend to the iconic Finale Outdoor Region. An area that has long been synonymous with enduro mountain biking, having hosted the series ever since its inception in 2013. And while Finale has traditionally been the grand finale to the season in later September, this year sees riders take to the lush green hills above the Mediterranean Sea in June for round 3.

World Cup racing kicks off on Saturday when the world’s best enduro riders will descend on Pietra Ligure to tackle its expansive trail network in the mountains high above the Ligurian Sea. With six big stages and over 3000 metres of descending on the menu, riders will have to push hard to keep both body and bike intact on these notoriously technical trails.

In the women’s competition, all eyes will be on series leader Bex Baraona as the British rider leads the standings by just 17 points ahead of France’s Isabeau Courdurier. While Ella Conolly currently rounds out the top three in the overall, she will not be competing this weekend due to injury. One to pay attention to will be local rider Gloria Scarsi as a definite podium threat in front of her home crowd.

In the men’s competition, it’s Baraona’s Yeti/Fox Factory Race teammate Richie Rude who will start the race as the clear favourite. The American rider will be looking to add a fifth Finale podium finish to his roster, but trying hard to stop him will be Australia’s Daniel Booker and Luke Meier-Smith, Jesse Melamed, Jack Moir and a host of others who showed podium form at the first two rounds in Tasmania.

Those rocks + that dust + the forecasted rain = Epic racing.

I'm jealous of that proper mid-foot cleat position under Eddie Masters' shoe.

and courious about the data tech thingery on his calippers and fresh looking shock. jesse's been on an air rad shock, coud this probably be the coil version?

I thought he wasn't clipped in at first. It looks like the middle of the shoe is on the pedal

@sack-zement: The Ibis bikes also appear to have a product camo paint job.

i'm interested in what shoes he's wearing, never seen before.

To be honest, I thought that he wasn't clipped in. It seems like you can see the cleat just forward of the pedal, plus the caption says something about footing.

@coloradohaze: We were talking to the mechs at their booth. They said "it's actually a Yeti" Smile

What happened to the Pinkbike Enduro Fantasy... an DH? Why is that gone? I guess Outside staff cuts are having further effects beyond less articles and editorial?

Every few months the site gets a little more bare and worse. Already find I'm visiting less.

 Few observations:
Chaz Wazza NOT on the Enduro
Both Specialized riders using LYRIKs

Interesting....

I wonder if they couldn't get Zebs for some reason in time, or get the proper air spring length.
  • 3 0
@aireeek: i would be suggesting that it would be more about product choice and not supply constraints.

The caption said he opted for a "smaller" bike, I assumed that meant he sized down on the same bike, but maybe he prefers the Stumpy's shorter wheelbase for this venue?

Watched a youtube video on his channel, he did some testing on the Enduro and the Evo with both a Zeb and a Lyrik. Said the Evo was faster and felt better and the flex of the Lyrik felt better on off camber loose stuff. Obviously the Enduro will be faster on the ultra rough tracks but cool to see him on a Evo for this race. Scott riders appear to be on the new Genius vs the older Ransom as well.

@Aem221: been watching his testing videos as well and he was definitely faster on the Evo.

I have been running my own tests riding my Megatower and Evo back to back. Evo is faster almost everywhere relative to the Mega simply because it is more efficient when laying the power down and easier to throw around with 4 lbs less weight. Difference is mainly frame, rear shock (coil vs air) and Zeb vs Lyrik.
  • 3 0
I feel like the Lyrik can handle a lot.
  • 1 0
I'm wondering whether they only run 160mm because the new lyriks don't take 170mm airshafts anymore as far as I know.
Also: jack and jesse run the new Sram DH brakes.

Over here is not so much about travel as it is about how the suspension performs on repeated hitsin all sort of akward positions (off camber, sudden grade changes, etc.) I'm not a pro but it took me a while to get used to the ZEB and I only reealy feel It has an edge in some sections on black trails like Cacciatore or Madonna della Guardia. I'd say this course was somewher in the overlap between a Lyrik and a ZEB possibilities so it's up to each rider to choose. Also, lighter riders probably (my case, 70 Kg) move that overlap down towards the Lyrik...
