The Pro Stage kicked off proceedings on Saturday night, where the tightest racing of the weekend went down in the women’s field. Series leader Melanie Pugin took top honors, while Noga Korem and Estelle Charles took second and third place respectively, with less than a second between all three. For the Men, Jack Moir edged out Richie Rude by the slimmest of margins as the pair continued their toe to toe rivalry for the 6th straight round.

The scene was set for an intense showdown on Sunday’s five stages, and it more than delivered. Morgane Charre, Harriet Harnden and Korem all claimed stage victories, but it was Isabeau Courdurier’s consistency all race that paid off, handing her a win for the second time this season.

In the men’s race Jack Moir came out swinging from the start, but it would be Richie Rude who would pull back time and control the race up until the final stage. Veterans like Martin Maes and a fresh face in Kasper Woolley threw their hands into the mix, but it wasn’t enough to compete with times being put down in the never-ending Rude versus Moir battle. Despite two stage wins for Rude, a dropped chain on the final stage saw him running up a climb and coasting to the finish line, ended his chances. Allowing Jack Moir to claim the final stage and with it the race. Rude had to settle for the second step on the podium and Kevin Miquel continued his impressive form to land on the third for the second race in a row.

Once more it was Canyon Collective who picked up Team of the Day, with Specialized Racing in second and Lapierre Zipp Collective in third - extending Canyon’s lead in the overall team competition.

Melanie Pugin and Jack Moir continue their leads in the individual overall.

The series returns next week when it heads to a brand new venue in Crans-Montana, Switzerland

The "little luck" comment about Richie Rude dropping a chain is kind of off the mark IMO. It's not like the chain just randomly bailed out of nowhere, I believe he mentioned it happened after hitting something. I'm sure Jack Moir had plenty of opportunities to hit stuff and wreck the drivetrain, it only happens that he managed not to do so.

Sorry for the rant, I just dislike to see Jack's achievement to be somewhat diminished

I don't see it as diminishing Jack's win at all. Any time someone has a mechanical during a race there is some luck involved. If it was a privateer that didn't have their bike prepped properly then it is just bad race craft. These guys are all incredible riders and Jack had to be riding strong enough to take advantage of Richey's misfortune.

Yeah, I don't see any luck being involved, Jack rode a smarter and cleaner race and won. Great photos!

 Agreed

I just cracked a DT EX471 back rim which is the same rim many of the EWS riders race on. I promise you the broken rim is far more a reflection of my terrible line choices than anything to do with being particularly fast. Line choice definitely matters lol

Sometimes you just get a random rock being thrown up and hitting the bike in the wrong place, there is always a bit of luck involved in any race run, but I do agree that to a large extent we mostly influence our own luck.

That's just racing, man. It's a competition and theres going to be some banter. It's not all about making every feel great and giving pats on the back all the time.

In the finish Jack said he dodged a bullet. He'd hit two trees on the way down and essentially thrown his run away, while already 4 seconds back going in... He thought he'd lost it for sure. I believe you can see it on his IG Stories as well... Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It doesn't diminish anything.

 best photos ever, dave trumpore!!!!

Great shots! As others have said before, these photo stories are some of the best EWS coverage. That patriotic pan shot is pure art.

That Vidal pic is bonkers! The Fearon one a banger as well

The Adrien Dailly shot-looks like he tore out of the heavens onto the trail, as evidenced by the vapour trail.

That one is off the charts. POY material.

 @nozes:

Agree - I wonder how much prep went into composition set up and then timing for the perfect angle to pull it all together?

Outstanding shot (and my new wall paper)

What I really want to know is will Jesse post the GoPro footage to his channel of him trying to deal with a flat on the fourth stage of an EWS race. If I had to deal with that I can only imagine the shit show of cursing and tools being thrown out everywhere that would ensue!

Zero acknowledgement of the efforts of the U21 riders and their achievements and not just on here, it's universal across all EWS media, even on the organizer's channels. It doesn't fuel the fire for brands, teams and their partners to invest their precious resources into the next crop of talent for this discipline.

Because their race is impossible for me to cover... They start first and are 2 stages ahead the whole day. Hundreds of riders before the top 20 women and top 30 men that come down last.
  • 2 0
This is by no means a pop at you @davetrumpore, just the frustration of a brand with two fast U21 riders and a lack of infrastructure beyond our own means, to share their accomplishments. And our apologies. Shooting an EWS solo with a World Cup happening at the same weekend, straining the photography component of PB's team and getting images like this, is a feat unto itself. Hopefully, we'll have some Elite's in the mix soon enough.

Do racers get extra advantage for winning stages? I know consistency is a big part of these races but feels a bit off when a rider wins 5 out of 6 stages, lose time on one stage and then end up in 15th overall. I'm thinking more in ALN's case where she injured her ankle after winning every stage before that. Some incentive to taking stage wins would be an interesting addition imo

Its all about how fast you can go on ALL the stages, not just one or two

Pinkbike - Fancy making sure the U21's get some sort of Acknowledgement too? It's like their race didn't even happen...

See my comment above... We do include them on the results page which is always posted to the homepage after events.

@fit4racing well there is an opportunity if there ever was one:
1. Get an idea of overall season budget required to be a media squid from the current pros
2, Pitch to all U21 brands that you can cover their athletes during the races/ season, spread the cost over all brands.
3. Get accredited with EWS.
4. Follow the series & athletes (generating extra paying content between races).
5. Sell content to PB for extra wedge.
6. Enjoy the process of finding accommodation in Europe that doesn't blow a panel when you go to charge all your gear each evening, Covid tests, long road transfers, shitty wifi (for back ups and submitting content).
7. Become a mountain bike content legend.
