Welcome to the Castle Hill basin. Home to many of New Zealand's most popular riding spots; Broken River (Craigieburn), Castle Hill and Mt Cheeseman. Just over an hour's drive from Sam's hometown of Christchurch, it's a place where you can find him out training all day, out exploring on his moto or fishing.

Textures of the Basin. Moss, Lichen, Rock, Beech and some of the many colours they can be found in. Spend enough time here and you'll be wanting to change your ringtone to that of the sound of crunching beech leaves underfoot.

High in the tussock on the slopes of Mt Cheeseman in the early morning light is the perfect start to any day. Far away from civilization, watching the sun light the hills, and ripping through narrow corridors lined by alpine grass laden in morning dew.

Home is where you park it, which in this case is just about anywhere when you are chasing sunrises and sunsets for days on end.

High on the slopes of Mt Cheeseman, ribbons of heavenly of singletrack wind their way through dense, native beech trees just below the snow line

Craigieburn and scree go hand in hand, and Sam sure knows how to rip scree.

Maybe poking a fisheye in this wake wasn't a good idea?

Dickson's downhill is a far cry from the dense bush on the rear slopes, but offers incredible riding and even better vistas.

It may be a trail bike paradise but rest assured Blenki found time to ooze his textbook style.

Where is this place? It's not on the map my girlfriend bought from Ikea. Must be Australia.

Blenki is such an awesome rider to watch. Hope he can edge closer to regular podiums this season. Having him and Brook on fire just makes DH even better. An antidote to the somewhat anadyne riders the WC circuit seems to comprise of these days. Plus Deity seem like a really cool firm. Listen to the podcast with the owner interviewed if you haven't already proper sorted fella.

I didn’t think it was possible to make a boring vid of Belnkinsop until I watched this.

Deity, I love your stuff, you can do better.

In what way was this deemed terrible?
Id say it was shot fairly well. Tools were used appropriately.

This is a video that wants to do everything. It wants to be cinematic, showcase amazing landscape but Sam's steeze up close too. It wants to give off a bright and energetic vibe but also wants hip-hop, and definitely throw some RAWWWW in there too. It just ended up being a very confusing video. These mid-edit song switching is getting out of hand, identify a style a go with it. Stop trying to pack Hans Zimmer and 50 cents into one 2-min long video.

@Aaronhuang: I think you nailed it. It feels as if there isn't anything that unifies this vid, other than it being outdoors with Sam on a bike. Too bad, because it is a tremendous amount of work putting these things together. This vid with its clips together is not as strong as the individual chunks. The individual chunks are fantastic.

There was definitely a "way more artsy than you" vibe to the whole thing. 1:20 until we really got to any riding, then music choices that were hip-hop but nature dubstep at the same time, with little raw clips and then the whole continuity thing about riding the DH bike in the middle of that trail bike lap. Not to mention, the barrage of stills below the video. Some film school grad just got his first job content creating and flexed all his creative muscles at once. Take it easy buddy, save something for the next one...

Loads of beautiful scenery...brought to you by Deity. Also look out for shots of Blenki.
  • + 1
Scenery doesn't move, Blenki does (and very quickly)... So it's just easier to get the scenery and mix in a few shots of the elusive Blenki

 Beeched As. What a place.
  • + 12
 Sooo NZ has sheep.
  • + 3
I came away from watching this video wondering what is the performance gain of those Rock Socks.
  • + 7
I like that he smiles a lot when he rides. Can't see that as much when he's got on the full face.
  • + 2
Literally sitting in Christchurch airport right now having just spent a year here. Craigieburn has some of the best trails on the planet. So sick, wish I didn't have to leave!
  • + 4
the vid is so much overdone.
  • + 4
yep i started thinking it was a NZ tourism ad. i don't want 35mm bars but damn, i want to go to NZ! ,
  • + 4
Single track in beech forest is the best.
  • + 4
Is it bureaucratically difficult for ex-pats to live in this paradise?
  • + 25
No, not really. But what do you bring to the table? We don't take no Cheez Whiz swilling yokels....
  • + 5
I think the word you're looking for is "refugees".
  • + 3
just spent a year living in NZ, biking, and trying to stay. If you're under 30 you can get a 1-yr working holiday visa. Beyond that you need to prove that you have "essential skills" and get a qualifying job/work visa. Or you can do unlimited 3-month holiday visas, just can't work.
  • + 7
@shredmdp: Or you can just be extremely rich, we like to let rich people in without any bureaucracy and bypass all the red tape normies have to go through... ya know, keep the system fair and all that.
  • + 2
if you've got a million dollars to invest in say a vineyard you're set!

@handynzl: Retired cannabis stock investor? Don't plan on working for a living, but want to invest in some form of NZ environmental protection/restoration projects or advocacy. I've also worked in Educational IT for many years.
  • + 3
@endlessblockades: Legalized/decriminalized cannabis referendum is currently going through Parliament atm, could be a big market some time in the future, at the moment we're still stuck in the past.
  • + 3
@Clarkeh: Same in the US - we are still a patchwork of weed-legal States under a conservative Federal overlord. I'm invested in Canadian cannabis for now. I feel a bit guilty doing so after being affiliated with the black market for so long, but people should not be going to jail/prison for plant-based offenses and fvck the Cartels.
  • + 3
@endlessblockades: with how well its working out for Canada you'd think most countries would see the tax revenue they're earning and sign right the f*ck up for that $$
  • + 1
Not if you have an Australian passport! Yeehaa. I'm moving to the UK for 12 months next year; and then to NZ for a year (or so).
  • + 1
@Clarkeh: Interesting news about the referendum. Any feelings about which way the wind is blowing? I've spent most of my adult life wondering when governments are going to wake up.
  • + 2
so good to see blinky still having fun and sending it, the last four years ive spent in NZ winter riding and it truly is a paradise
  • + 1
I'm hoping to do the same, starting this December. Wishing my life away at the moment, especially when I watch edits like this.
  • + 3
bummed there were no ETs Frown

If 35mm bars will make me ride like Sam Blenkinsop, I'll take 3.

 Soundtrack is perfect from 2:50-3:00.

Epic cinematography.

Ain't an edit for a glove brand

Didn’t know that Blenki is a fishing man! Another great sport that I like besides riding bikes!
  • + 1
... assuming he's still with Norco this season. You know rumours and all...
  • + 1
Pretty tame for Blenkinsop. He was taking it easy. Most of the videos I have seen of him were flat out warp speed.
  • + 1
Blenki should compete in RB Rampage.
  • + 1
 The perfect NZ/Canuck dreamteam
  • + 1
 That was solid! Thank you.
