Ultramontane No. 04 - Wade Simmons

Ultramontane No. 04 title

There you have it. Everyone can rest easily, it finally snowed down in the city again... And it's gone already. While we have been dealing with a somewhat low snow-line the past couple days there have been a select few riders on a select few trails having a choice time. With that being said, there also have been some amazing powder days going on up in the alpine regions, or so I have heard. - For real though neither of us have done any snow sports since the last snowfall.

Connor and I have been on a hunt for great low elevation riding for this exact situation. We slogged through the brush harder than the original crew of Captain George Vancouver's ship when it first hit the shores of this fine city. Exploration, on a full time level with camera gear and bikes and the bounty came in the content for this release. The best part about this is nothing ended up even looking like we were too far into winter... well that and winter only really hit on Wednesday, which is basically when we called it wraps for shooting.

Regardless of the slogging and low elevation trails we will still we try to get out and have some snow into the next episode if it can manage to stick around long enough. We're not trying to take the easy route out with this whole winter riding concept... there just really shouldn't be a full on 'off-season' when there is still so much to ride.

Single track with invisible trail through some ferns.

photo

Some glacial action happens over time and then you get things like this broken rock.

Tech little rock roll.

Leaves with some rain on them. Squirrels ate some pine cone pieces in that top right shot.

Putz ing some steep reclaimed skidder trail.

Salal and single-track make a great combo. Size up for 2.00 more.

Dank-ass leaves.

Climbing through some ferns.

Everyone rolls this rock. Rock rolls for everyone.

Ultramontane & Company Presents: Wade Simmons
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

I hope everybody hit up their DVD and VHS collection to get caught up on this legendary man like I recommended in the last release. Wade Simmons. It was a pleasure to work with him on this release, he's like a kid in a candy store, except it's like Wade with a media crew. All he wants to do is just shoot and shoot. There's honestly so much more footage sitting on our computers from the last couple of weeks with Wade, I mean he's riding 3 different bikes in this video and they're all in some sort of similar Wade style. He's hitting bigger gaps on his XC than he was on his DH rig.

Riding and working with Wade really showed us what it was like to have riding so heavily focused into your life, he was never having a bad time no matter what he was riding or what bike he was on, from fluid descents to technical, scratchy, uphill climbs I've never witnessed somebody so enthusiastic and happy to be riding.

There's a special cameo appearance by none other than Brett Tippie. Wade and him have been life long friends, which for sure shows through when they're together and having another freeride legend on camera doesn't hurt either.

Doing some Wade-ism s off the log.

Throwing on the pack.

Pushing a quick little corner through.

Rock chute.

Avoiding some friendly and fragile foliage.

Under the cliff.

Steep rock in the wet... I heard the way to ride this is Just f*ckin putz it

Prepping the all mountain rig for a day of shooting.

Traversing to the trap.

Skidder road climb as fog lifts.

Steepest and scratchiest of all climbs. Nailed it.

Powering through the corridor

Dropping in through some wet foliage.

Blasting down the corridor on the xc rig.

Mossy bluff with a big banking corner.

Wade hitting up some steep scratchy climb.

Air time on the XC rig.

That concludes Ultramontane No. 04 - Our next release will be on March 16, 2012.

IMHO: Dre, and now Simmons?? Hands-down the best web-produced MTB series by far. Major props for documenting the great legends of the shore. Personally I love the vision and style of the cinemetography, it just elevates these videos to true art compared to a lot of the glitch-mob ADD-style stuff you see nowadys where it's all about millisecond edits, loud electronica, and jumps galore. Not that those aren't cool, but very trendy imho. These videos will perhaps (hopefully) become reference material for generations of new riders and filmakers to come.

Thanks for the kind words. Respect.

Also, awesome choice with the music! Wade can climb like a billy goat!
  • 1 0
LOL what was the point of the milk and nuts???
  • 1 0
I hope its clear that the intro is a parody, arm fulls of granola and soy milk, although delicious and nutritious -it was meant for a laugh
  • 1 0
sorry I had no idea what is it from

and that my fellow pinkbikers is North Vancouver "cross country" and why Vancouver XC riders many times don't do very well at flat, non-technical courses. We don't have much opportunity to practise in that kind of terrain

Wow - I was about to ask where the general area was! if you don't mind me asking, what is the access like? By that I mean, is it an 'expedition' to reach trails like that or could anything be reached easily for a half day's riding? Seriously considering a career move to BC/Vancouver and being able to ride stuff like this AND manage family life would be extra peachy :-)
  • 1 0
Most of this was filmed either in Cypress Fromme or Seymour. I can ride to Fromme or Seymour and be at trailheads in 15 - 20 mins or drive in 5 if I'm lazy. Cypress is a 15 min drive (on the highway so a bit of a bugger to get there by bike). Lots of fathers get out and ride a lot. Eg Wade's a dad

and if you aren't like Wade, and are a nine-to-fiver family person, there's always nightriding! A favorite fun thing us locals like to do to get out and do after tucking the kiddies in their beds. I'm a mom of two and ride!
  • 1 0
Ace! thanks so much leelau and mulchee. I'm definitely a nine to fiver family person, but get my riding in here in short blasts - local trails are 10 mins drive away, in there by dawn, and home by lunch ~ 1 min top to bottom before the push back up. the stuff in BC looks massive, and it'd be liberating to see greenery through winter.

I'd love to hear about the best places to live - in terms of working in downtown Vancouver or Burnaby, but living somewhere affordable, and even better with space and quiet!
  • 1 0
Burnaby is very central 15-20 min to most places, I can just pedal to burnaby mtn, but North van is closer to more tech trails and if you move to Lynn valley you can just pedal too fromme or seymour

Wade + XC bike = amazing. I could watch that all day.
  • 3 0
amazing how he just flows on his xc bike, but rides his dh bike so much more aggressively. Really shows how you can change your style with the bike and terrain.
  • 3 0
The more I watch the video, the more I appreciate just how much style and flow Wade has. If there is such a thing as "art" in MTB, he personifies it. I am damn sure if you look up the word "flow" in the dictionary, it'll just have a one word definition: Simmons.

Respect.

if it wasn't for simmons (and shandros) shimano brake videos i don't think i would be into the the beautiful sport of mountain biking! this guy inspired 2 13ish year old boys to go out and ride the local trails Smile

top rider and amazing video!

By far the best edit on PB in quite some time. I would personally love to see more of this type of riding and I am sure there are many others here who would agree. Wade is truly one of the originals and is a great role model for many, many riders. Props to the film makers for getting my stoke going and props to Wade for just being awesome!!!

If you want to keep these iconic shore trails alive voice your opinion because cypress trails are right now being threatened. Go to this article on pinkbike.

I was lucky enough to ride with Wade Simmons once in Costa Rica, I say with, it was more way behind the whole time. He is in my mind the best ambassador for this sport we love so much that it ever had. A complete humble gentleman and simply poetry on a bike. Wade you rock.
  • 3 0

 Silk.. Really?? eeww

Awesome series, really captures how enjoyable the outdoors can be.

Wade is my friggen idol, rad smoothness on the bike and just having fun! It was a huge treat to meet him in 2010 when I was in Moab riding The Whole Enchalada, was honestly a major highlight of a 11000km road trip.

Someone need to make a full length movie featuring 6" bike ripping... hint.. hint.

I really want to ride. I live in Northern Michigan and REALLY need to make my way into Canada for some riding. It wouldn't be North Shore but I'm sure it would still be awsome.
