Must Watch: DreamRide III - Video & Photo Epic

Apr 25, 2018 at 6:47
by Diamondback Bikes

Once upon a dream we flew
Across oceans and skies so bright and blue
We found a place unlike others we'd seen
With rocks so massive and grasses so green

We've seen mountains and jungles and canyons run deep
We've raced lava, chased sunsets, and found caves in our sleep
It's been a trip old friend, and I'll always embrace
The memories created in this magical place.

Welcome to DreamRide III

Here we go again, come on old friend
We’ve got one more story before we turn in

Diving back into that childhood lore
Where everything is like nothing before

Roaming through places so beautifully strange
Between stony giants a lifetime unchanged

Sometimes I pretend I’m a really big deal
Like a cowboy in a western, with that cinematic feel

This. Is. Epic!

Adventures can take a shadowy twist
Down a dark road where creepy creatures exist

Perhaps it’s my mind, simply playing its tricks
Or was that a monster stepping on sticks?

But let's be honest, safe places are never as much fun

There’s a youthful pull to places of dread
Just like mom always warned us “It’s dangerous!” She said

Life’s little storms try and push me astray
“Not me, not today, not now,” I’ll say

For sometimes life’s challenges can create something grand
Like castles formed from fine grains of sand

So here’s to one final rip, and one final shred
One final lap before I fall back to bed

It's the perfect place to finally rest
We've given our all, our very best
But all good things must come to an end
So here's to our final story, my friend.

We bid you farewell, with hearts open wide
And thank you for joining our final DreamRide.

A letter to a couple of rad companies:

Working with Diamondback, and more recently ION has provided opportunities that don’t typically exist in the our industry. From my first day, I experienced a group of people who not only appreciated creativity but fostered and invested in it, which for an athlete like myself felt like a meeting of the minds. You see, I’m not your “Insta-famous” athlete, my social media game is far from strong, which wouldn’t and doesn’t work for a lot of companies. I’m the guy that takes on a project, rallies a band of talented individuals, disappears for a couple months and comes out of the woods with a final piece that will hopefully be a little different and speak to audiences. Diamondback has understood this formula and supported our outlandish ideas from the beginning requiring a monumental amount of trust on their part.

No matter how “out there” the ideas, the only guidelines I have ever been given are as follows:

1.) Be different
2.) Don’t miss the deadline
3.) Make sure you hit the first two

Diamondback and ION believe in creativity without parameters which has allowed our team to explore new ideas and carve our own path. So here’s us tipping our hats to you, thanks for enabling us to be all kinds of weird.

Cheers, from Mike Hopkins and The Dream Team

DreamRide 3 is brought to you by Diamondback Bikes and the 2018 Diamondback Release.
Along with presenting partner ION Apparel.

All imagery was shot by Bruno Long.

Dreamride is a thrill, the landscapes sublime. I wish I could dream these dreams all the time. Instead my slumber is broken by the call of kid's needs or the nagging question of where are my keys. Yet eyes open or closed I dream of a time when I can get out for that next soul-filling ride.

It's like Dr. Seuss for mountain biking.

It’s Dr. Seuss but for big kids with very expensive toys.

It's incredible to reflect back on the progression of the internet, media and the sport. Back in the early 90's I was riding my full rigid Avanti Nomad, reading magazines like MTB Action, heroes like John Tomac. 40km away off the shore of my home town was that smokey volcano in this video.... Fast forward some 24 odd years and the front page of website dedicated to MTB'ing is a HD video of epicness, streamed instantly around the world, on incredibly capable bikes with a segment on that island. Globally everyone will see it and get stoked instantly on it. Amazing. Well done DreamRide crew. Well done.

Sometimes I pretend I’m a really big deal

If that's not how it feels during and after a good ride I don't know how else to say it!

Can't imagine how bad it must have smelled riding through those sulfur vents...
  • 77 0
We literally had gas masks since it was really hard to breathe. Also, fun fact: the gasses rusted Hopkins' chain and cassette in just a couple hours of exposure. Also my tripod (and probably the inside of my camera).
  • 17 1
@scottsecco: Wow... and now i don't want to go there anymore....
  • 10 0
@FASTFOKUS: Actually it's quite an experience - it's an island you can get tours onto. It's called "White Island" in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Very very surreal landscape walking around on it. Just don't inhale deeply the sulphur smoke Smile When we went you only needed masks close up to the vents.

[Edit - double checked that you can still get tours]

@Zuman: haha thanks so much! Can't take all the credit though as Hopkins, Gibb, Manley, Peacock, and Nutini, have all had a hand in shooting it. Plus Scotty Carlson editing part 1 & 3. But thanks so much! Always stoked to hear people are enjoying the films.

The dreamride videos are the only instances where it's acceptable to put "MUST WATCH" in front of the articles. Everything else is just clickbait.

So cool guys and I know it didn’t come easy! Congratulations, the result is totally awesome. (As per the old-school dictionary definition of inspiring awe.)
  • 8 0
 ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!

I guess I won't be winning picture of the year again.
  • 3 0
I loved that it shows you riding the crap outta some trails. Not just sliding your rear wheel around turns in slo-mo...and then again from another angle....and another angle. Good story, great cinematography, and breathtaking photos! Way to go Mike and the Dream Team!
  • 3 0
This is one of those videos that lets you forget you work in an office, have real life stuff to sort, a house to fix and car that needs patched up. Gets you pumped up for riding the bike to escape it all for an hour or two, with nothing to worry about but the thrill of a perfect line. Awesome!
  • 9 2
 yeah that was ok
  • 16 0
@diamondbackbikes: totally, what a lame video, no police chase or bras

MY GOD!!!! Great Job again DreamTeam!!!!! Never gets tired. Only sad this is the sequel. However looking forward to new projects in the future. Aloha From Big Island!!!! @scottsecco @hopkins

@scottsecco: The geologist in me says, "What the...?"

Where was that spectacular and scenic riding though the giant boulders filmed?
  • 8 1
@bbeak that would be Flock Hill, New Zealand! Seriously cool place to check out, felt straight out of Indiana Jones haha.
  • 5 0
@scottsecco: Well The Chronicles of Narnia and lord of the rings anyway.
  • 2 0
It is private property and the owners are all right with boulders going up there, its a pretty internationally renounced boulder field. But if a bunch of bikers start going up there then I can see it getting closed off which would be a shame, I would imagine that these guys got permission from the land owners. Here is a winter shot, www.instagram.com/p/BWode7mhqsR/?taken-by=nickdaviesnz on this day I skied the same line rode at 0:45

@scottsecco: i was seriously watching this thinking f*ck the have done a mint job traveling around north america to find all these places that stitch together to look like NZ.should be asking for kickbacks from tourism NZ if you havent.love it
  • 1 1
@dirtbeard: haha we tried but we only gave them a month's notice that we were coming down to film and apparently that wasn't enough time for them to approve any involvement in it. I guess I'll just have to come back another time with my bike so I can get some riding in!

Between Fabio Wilmer’s new edit and this new DreamRide, it’s a good week for mountain biking.
  • 1 0
Amazing. Beautiful, inspiring and, sadly, unattainable.

Anybody else have dreamscapes where you ride your bike? There is a bunch of trails that I dream I ride on from time to time. I keep returning to those trails. Sometimes I am even tricked into thinking that they really exist. They have some similarities with real-life trails, but when I think hard about it, it will clear that they are part of my dreamscape.

@scottsecco: that is one pro-level drone! It must have been flying at 50mph in some of those shots.
  • 7 1
Thanks @joeadnan! It was actually a Phantom 4 Pro, so it wasn't too crazy, you can pick one up these days for around $2,000. They definitely rip though! I'm too scared to put it in ''sport'' mode since I crash so many of them...
  • 3 0
Großartig as we say in Germany. Great job again. Just let me know if you are looking for another spectacular places to ride ... for instance in Switzerland.
