I thought the same thing but ever since I got Schwalbe ice spiker pro (studded tires) I've been having a lot of fun on snow and ice. Granted, I'm no where near the speeds they are going but I definitely ride as if there's no snow/ice on the ground.
I wish pinkbike would take a closer look at those guys tires. They appear to be custom made with spikes as i havent seen any like that for sale online other than schwalbe ice spikers, which they are clearly not. I would love to see PB go through which tires might work best for doing this and maybe a how-to??? I mean are they literally just drilling screws int their tires? is there a company that makes mtb specific screws? Are they using sealant or tubes? I'm curious
there are vids on youtube...maybe even by these guys, can't remember but I know I've seen a how to with some tricks as well. It was part of a biking vid or documentary or something of the like. Might have even been here on PB that I saw it.
there are two different Scott Gamblers in the video (changing top tubes), one of them, the black one is probably Nico, the blue one is Vinny, Makken is in the lead
[old guy]Utmost respect to these guys and I know they are riding trails they know, and most likely know the builders. Just out of curiosity... are we going to get to a respect building point soon, where these scandi-flick vids come with a little message saying: hey, don't do this unless...?[/old guy]
It would probably be summer once I'm halfway down the course and then I could speed up a little :-)
