Words: DVO Winter Gravity Series

The 2023 DVO Winter Gravity Series at Bootleg Canyon, in Boulder City, Nevada starts off with a big change for the 1st event of the series. On January 20-22, 2023 the long-standing Nevada State Championships has been promoted to the Southwest Regional Championships. The winners of DH and Enduro will be champions of the Southwest United States for the states of Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California. Not only will racers be awarded the coveted USA Cycling Regional Championship medals, but they will also have a jump start on valuable USA Cycling points compared to the rest of the country that may be buried in snow. Not a bad way to start off the new year if you are a gravity mountain bike racer.
Registration is open for all events in the series and details can be found HERE

The series will continue with the drive-thru packet pick-up and online registration only. When packet pick-up goes from a long line to just mere seconds with no paperwork, it is a keeper. Another change for the series will be posting the race courses on the event website well before each event with maps and statistics.

The series is once again proud to be part of the Intense Podium Payback Program where it pays to ride an Intense, especially at a DVO Bootleg event. The races will also see a larger presence of Fezzari Bikes. Fezzari will be making a huge presence with their factory race team at all events.

If you are traveling to this event there is free onsite dry camping right at the venue, or choose one of the participating hotels. The Best Western is our host hotel and where most of the racers will be staying. If you want a nice room where you can walk to town and be closest to the venue, the Best Western would be your choice.

For this Downhill race the Pro, Open, and Category 1 will race down Poop Chute while Category 2, Category 3, Juniors, and Elite 6-10 veer right avoiding Poop Chute. The Beginner 6-10 are the only ones racing the Kids' DH racecourse. For the Enduro race the Pro, Open, and Category 1 will race down all of E.Leg (stage 2) while Category 2, Category 3, and Juniors turn right off of E.Leg just after the DS course, cross the road onto lower Girlscout and cross the road again back with the rest of the field for the same finish. Pro/Open E-Bikes follow the same course as the other Pro/Open/Cat 1 for Enduro while amateur E-Bikes follow the same course as the other amateurs.

Really interesting changes to the eunduro from the last time I races it in 2021, first stage is the same though, but of a slog for the 2nd half. Like the finish, though. The stage 3 finish was so technical in 2021 and now it finishes with the flowiest section of trail out there.

The enduro looks like a good intro race to someone who has been considering racing this series, but intimidated by some of the course segments in the past.

I'm a Bootleg local and adequate but not great rider and these are trails that I ride regularly. There are a couple spots on the bottom of the first leg that can be tricky until you get the line and one on the second that is a bit of a drop/roll to pretty flat where things have washed out a bit (I imagine that might be patched up a bit), but it's really a course that can be ridden by most avid mountain bikers.

@MarcusBrody: for sure, some of the off camber stuff around the back of stage one can be tricky too, it's pretty physical racing too. I was so tired by the time I reached the third stage I forgot to unlock my shock and rode about a third of it locked out haha. Love riding down there though. Would definitely do it again if I was closer

@AddisonEverett: Yep they are. I finally figured out the last of the off camber sections pretty recently. The first half of Inner Caldera was kind of my bugaboo trail for a while. I'd backed off a couple of features the first time I rode it and somehow it got in my head even as I progressed to riding more challenging and exposed trails nearby.

Bootleg is so gnarly. Even in these photos you can just tell every rock wants to chew your flesh off.
