Press Release: Bootleg Canyon Gravity Racing

USA Cycling has just awarded Bootleg Canyon Gravity Racing and DVO Suspension with the very first ever E-Bike Western Regional XC Championships at Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City, Nevada. With the regional event including all western states, please think of this as a multi-state championship event. There will also be a Coyote Classic XC series for conventional mountain bikes.

The Coyote XC races will all start at 9:00 am and the Coyote E-Bike races will start at 1:00 pm. There will be separate courses for both the E-Bike and the conventional XC races for these three DVO Coyote race weekends. This series will determine who are the fastest and fittest E-Bikers and Cross-Country racers in the west.

Early E-Bike races at Bootleg had no age brackets or even categories as they went with an Open Men and an Open Women choice only. This championship series has combined the Pro with Open and also has a Category 1 and a combined Category 2 & 3 with age brackets. For Category 1, a 60+ age bracket has been added by popular demand.

Event organizers have made this historical event into a fall series with the races happening on September 25, October 23, and the finals on November 20, 2021. All points will count towards the overall awards and winners from each category and age bracket will win a custom winners' jersey designed by Bryson Martin Jr. All that place in the top 3 at each race and the finals will also be awarded medals on November 20. In order to win the overall, you must have the most points and be present at the finals.

Each E-Bike race will feature a new course hand-picked and designed by Brian Lopes. Expect a super fun Pro/Open and Category 1 course with multiple laps and the same course for Category 2 & 3 with fewer laps. Organizers are hoping that Lopes will take advantage of the gravel pit with some Super-Cross-like features that will be highly visible for all spectators in attendance. With Lopes onboard and an event of such importance, rumors have quickly spread throughout the Moto-Cross world and some of the moto stars just may be participating in this inaugural event.

The conventional XC racecourse will be chosen by local XC racers and have a challenging course for Pro/Open and Category 1 with 3 laps and 2 laps for Category 2 racers. For Category 3 racers, there will be a separate and easier course with just 1 lap. With all of the categories, course choices, and age brackets, there will be fun competition for everyone.

Bootleg Canyon has a nice mix of DH and XC trails. For this XC series, only the XC trails will be used so please do not let the stories from the Bootleg downhillers frighten you away from these fun-for-all racecourses. Trails like Lakeview, POW, Bladerunner, Par None, and Girlscout will be used. There is a field limit of 250 (250 for each race) for this event and it is expected to sell out.

A huge thanks go out to the late Brent Thomson for having the vision, passion, strength, and friends for making these mountain bike trails. Also, not possible without the Boulder City Parks Department, DVO Suspension, All Mountain Cyclery, ODI Grips, Trucker Co, Intense Cycles, MJT Designs, and Box Components.

Some of these posts kill me... It's like windsurfers hating on kyte surfers, and real surfers hating on all of them as fake surfers... and then base jumpers hating on kyte surfers as fake parachuters... so dumb. They're bikes, relax and have fun with it. motorcycles are fun... 200lbs of fun. ebikes are fun... all 50lbs of them. your cross country bike is fun too, nobody will take it from you... all fun.

none of your examples involve a motor. More like someone in a canoe hating on his buddy in a similar canoe with a trolling motor. Agree, everyone can have fun. I think the opinions one way or the other on the matter are funny and I love to partake. At the end of the day, they are two different biking activities but both biking activities. Have fun out there.

Amen! Well said. I ride XC, Road, Ebikes, street bikes (FZ-09) and gravel bikes. Each having a different purpose and fun meter. Generally, I feel the trolls that spew negative comments have never experienced Ebikes perhaps? What a horrible way to exist; just tossing your mental hate towards other peoples joy.

mindset nowadays is Dichotomy and Antithesis, there is no in-between, you got to either love it or hate it, it really sucks.
we had a post ride conversation from a couple weeks ago almost turn into a fist fight, the topic was "buying an ebike is stupid, buy a motorbike instead".

@Narro2: I'm sure I'll get down voted for this but here ...we ....go..... I got into mountain biking for the exercise and being out in nature with nothing but me and the bike I rode to get out there. I think eBikes infringe on this feeling for some b/c it allows more users access to these areas and locations that were otherwise only accessible by a conventional bike. Is it right to have that reaction, NO, but that is where its coming from. Its the same feeling you have when someone rides by with a speaker mounted to the front of their bike. They are allowed to do it and they are having fun, let them be; however, does it rub me the wrong way b/c I don't want to hear your music out in the woods, yes. Humans are complicated and simple at the same time, we can disagree and should allow others to disagree with our thoughts; however, to devolve to a "fight" over the issue is ridiculous.

 U new to PB?

@SATN-XC: it Almost turn into fight but it didnt.

Regarding your interaction with nature being disrupted by ebikers, you are probably looking at it the wrong way, if you had an eBike you could go to places you havent gone before, further away from being disrupted, but yet again, buying an eBike is not that cheap, hahaha.

I am honestly ok, with more people riding everywhere, there is lots psicological BS on people minds, that going out to nature somehow is gotta help.

Seeing a 60+ cat 1 category makes me hopeful I can keep riding and getting better for the next 30+ years Smile Better get back to work so I can split retirement between skiing and biking

"XC E-Mtb Race" seems like one of the biggest oxymoron and contradiction ever.

The "e" better be for extreme
  • 1 0
Everyone knows extreme is spelled with an X

I’m all for run whatcha brung and would never try to sway anyone’s opinions but hate it or love it....it’s here to stay and personally I’m stoked for it!

Does anyone actually care about racing bicycles with a motor on them?...pretty sure if you want that, just watch motocross. I get the appeal of ebikes, but at a competitive level this is just stupid.
  • 1 0
I'm not anti-ebike racing, I can see where it would be enjoyable. But as someone who races all types of things and formats, I don't think I'd enjoy e-bike racing. It brings in a level of gear cost, the ability to buy advantage, and the way to cheat in secret that has steered me to bike racing and away from motorsports over time.

(Doping not withstanding, that is an issue for normal XC racing...but it does apply to e-bikes competition too.)

eMTB racing should be very different from XC racing, imo eMTB racing should be about climbing a whole mountain and ride it down the other side, both, up and down through the most tecnical terrain possible (as long as it is rideable of course), and it has to be 60+ kms, no less.

Leave room for 100 km or 150 km races for 24hr events or multiday events, in which people have the option to camp overnight or something.

eMTB on XC tracks is just a cashgrab tbh.

XC tracks? This event is at Bootleg Canyon. XC here is 160 mm travel, baggie shorts, and lots of exposure.

 @downhillmike: hahaha, fair enough

dont ditch the transmountainrange idea though.

you read it here first Wink

I'll race if I can land a fast food sponsor! Having a motor will keep me competitive. Put me up against em. It'll be funnier than watching an engineer design an xc bike with a motor

60+ Cat 1 category added for Old Dog
  • 2 0
We are hoping Old Dog races. That is my category/age bracket and no way I could stay with Old Dog.
  • 1 0
 Old Dog for the win!
  • 2 1
They've been putting motors on bicycles since the steam engine days. All of the sudden, technology has gotten really good at making small, powerful motors and everyone is loosing their shit
  • 6 4
Is there drug testing? I take hella drugs but def planning on shredding this series. EMTB IS THE SHIT!!!
  • 4 0
hella drugs + eBike....this is what the people want to see. Like WWE in bike form. I'm all for this.
  • 1 1
@SATN-XC: J'm sure people will want to win at all costs, there will be drugs and bikes that break the rules.
  • 2 0
 LMAO, You wild.

@SATN-XC: YAAAS! LEZ PARTY! This utah brent dude seems like a bummer, not invited

I wonder if there are any power limits to the Ebikes or is this a flex on which motor has the biggest output?
  • 2 0
Yes, there will be. Also, all winner's bikes will be checked after the race.
  • 3 2
Bonus points or time penalty if the bike bursts into flames?
  • 3 1

What's XC? Asking for a DH friend.
  • 1 0
Its when you use the pedals.

Used in a sentence... "there is no more downhill, I guess I'm gonna XC my bike over to the lift"
  • 5 5
what has this sport evolved into
  • 6 3
Hey, if it gets people mad and off the trails im down for it Big Grin . Also food for thought, what if I told you that ebike racing is just as silly, no more no less, than regular racing, shit its not like either pays.
  • 15 14
 Just race a motorcycle.
  • 5 8
 agreed...
  • 8 1
Have you ever raced a MotoX, MTB or eMTB?
I have raced all 3 disciplines and there is a big different in riding technique for each one.
Last time I looked at my eMTB it is pedal-assist, so not a MotoX or MTB, it is it's own racing discipline.
  • 1 3
Why does everything have to be a race..just chill out
  • 6 0
the article is literally about a race Smile
  • 1 4
Way to rise above the chaos.
