Cotic were the victims of a robbery after five bikes were stolen from its headquarters.

The robbery took place between 10 and 10:45 pm on October 21 with thieves making off with five bikes from Cotic's demo fleet. Luckily there was a quick response from Derbyshire Police and three bikes were able to be recovered at the scene but five bikes are still missing. Cotic has since shared through its social media that one of the three bikes found was dumped in a local garden after the thieves were disturbed by a neighbour.

Cotic has shared the news on social media alongside details of each missing bikes that may help riders spot them.

bigquotesWe were broken into last night between 2200-2245. It could have been a lot worse had it not been for our brilliant neighbours and the speedily responding Derbyshire Police. Our demo fleet was targeted, and although 3 bikes were recovered at the scene, the above-photographed 5 bikes are definitely gone.

C3 Silver XT FOX Hope RocketMAX
C2 Gritstone SRAM RockShox Rocketmax
Large Midnight Blue XT RockShox Jeht
XL Nimbus SLX Rockshox Jeht with high rise Rental bars
Slate Grey FLAREMAX SLX with blue SID, small or medium (still working that out)
All have Hunt wheels.

No one was hurt, and ultimately it is just stuff. But, I would have preferred to be up until 2 am on my wedding anniversary doing something else, and as I need help I am about to ruin Saturday for the rest of the staff. That probably pisses me off more than the bikes. However, if you spot these relatively rare bikes for sale where they shouldn't be, contact us, or Derbyshire Police. Thanks, Cy
Cotic

Quick response by Derbyshire Police ? The same Derbyshire Police that ignored my phone call about my stolen car being parked on a well known criminals driveway , Even when i gave them the thieves name and address nothing was done and i had to take matters into my own hands . Can only assume Derbyshire Police where sat outside Cotic bikes enjoying coffee and donuts ready for a quick nap when the robbery took place and found themselves in a position where they had better do something about it . Well done lads Smile

They just may have had more pressing issues than bothering about one guy's stolen property.
What kind of criminal parks a stolen car on his own driveway?! Especially with ANPR.
Assuming you actually owned the car and paid insurance/ vehicle tax etc

Perhaps your car, as distressing as it was to you, was not as high a priority as other issues at the time? That sucks but its life and there are considerably less cops than most people think. In your case all the information is there so did it need dealing with straight away?
I get bored of police bashing. Got a couple of mates who are cops and they reckon that most of their work is doing NHS work such as medical responding. They are knackered and worn out. Their view of the world and how it works is very different to most peoples cosy bubbles.
  • 31 22
@ilovedust: why are your police responding to medical emergencies? That’s not the job of the police, while responding to active theft is.
Sounds like your country has its priorities wrong.

It’s comforting to hear that the police in the uk care just as little about property crime as they do in the united states.

  • 6 0
@ilovedust: I understand your point but reporting the crime was just the beginning of a catalog of blunders in this case including wrong crime numbers being issued, Police pulling me over wanting to seize the vehicle off me .PCSO that gave the theif my personal details.

@rideronthestorm1: Also if you caught the guy stealing your car and gave him a good hiding, they'd be far more interested in prosecuting you than him. The system's f*cked.

@nickfranko: Because due to the government (of 12 years) shafting the country, either that ambulance ain't coming or it's going to be stuck in a 12-hour queue outside the hospital. The govt's "priorities" are to become the 51st state of America.

@scary1: if you want to demonstrate that a health service that is free at the point of use doesn't work, and that it would be much better to replace it with an insurance based system that benefits the private healthcare firms that UK ministers have been meeting in the US and elsewhere for years (i.e., a continuation of the great British sell-off of its infrastructure, public services and manufacturing assets), then you deliberately make it look inefficient and ineffective. You force it to fail.
Not saying that an affordable insurance-based system doesn't work, but what is happening to the NHS now (defunded and destaffed to within an inch of its life) is not solid evidence that the "free" system doesn't work, it's just an example of what happens when you let free-market vulture capitalist trojan horses run a nation.

Coppers dont seem to care about robbery nowdays and expect insurance to pick up the tab, so we all pay.
  • 3 0
@rideronthestorm1 You could call their bluff: phone them telling them your going ‘in’ with a baseball bat. Hit some things and make some noises whilst your still on the phone. Then cry out loud before muffling the phone and more shouting.
As the we reported incident is ‘live’, they’ll be there pretty quick Smile you just need to knock on the door and ask for your car back as they arrive…
They might try to take you to court for misleading the police, but it should get thrown out as a valid crime had taken place…
..in a nutshell, learn the new rules and play the game…

@Eland: Yes I was outside the house on the phone to the police who wanted me to report the crime via email??. So after waiting 2 hours for assistance it was obvious the police had no interest in this issue as my phone calls were now being put on hold .Long story cut short I was able to get in and start the vehicle with spare key and squeeze it through a small gap between a van and a gate post .I got someone to record all this on there phone . No one at the property would answer the door even though it was obvious they were in .

There are “shitholes and a*sholes” in every country, theft is a quick way to make money, don’t blame the country for the actions of a select few in their populace.

…and crime does not make an entire country bad, if you traveled abroad you’d quickly realize that what you read in the news is not representative of the whole.

Take for instance, gun violence in America. I don’t own a gun, nor does anyone in my immediate family. I haven’t been threatened with a gun, nor has anyone in my immediate family. I haven’t been near a shooting, nor has anyone in my immediate family.

And no, we don’t all live in a cave Wink

@mountainjew: I don’t deny what your saying, but there’s not a lot I can do about that problem, as you probably know by having experienced political will in your own country, money talks and bullshit walks.

I’ll admit, my wife and I have discussed moving to a friendlier country, but it gets complicated when you have family, jobs, etc …

I love what Canada is trying to do about guns, granted it’s a little late, but better late than never!
  • 6 1
@sanchofula: the odds of being in a shootout are fairly low. The consquences of being in one fairly high. Anecdotes are meaningless in that regard, but the statistics speak a clear language. Many, many more people get shot in the US than in most "developed countries".

@sanchofula: The crime has been rising exponentially in the US of late mostly because of policy. The US has several cities listed in most dangerous cities (highest homicide rates) in the world. Once you travel abroad a lot to safer countries, you realize how bad the crime and homelessness is in the US.

The UK isn't a shithole, it just has poor weather, a laughable political system, a crumbling public service sector, horrific energy costs, rising interest rates, a weakening currency, and is stupidly expensive to live in all things considered. Grand otherwise like.
  • 7 0
@Kmccann137: You are intent on spouting some absolute BS on an *off-road bicycling* website.

The UK is no closer to war than the US. Internal politics are shit leading situations where we have rising petty crime such as detailed in this article, but we are so so far from civil conflict. For example, we haven't stormed the offices of our nation's democracy with or without lethal weapons within the last 2 years. The most drastic action on our shores are nutjobs tossing soup at old paintings, camping out on suspension bridges, or launching puddings at 2nd rate tourist attractions in an attempt to coerce people to stop using oil.
Internationally, if we're getting into a war with our fingers on triggers, the whole world is equally f*cked.

@vinay: That's it, you don't expect to buy a Cotic from some noob you don't know, that's not going to happen here.

Well I'd say you can meet any bike you name around, however some are more often. Besides the big brands we have some local: Rock Machine (Prokop's sponsor, Czech brand) which is pretty often choice for beginners and intermediates and those who don't want to spend a fortune, however they had some bad luck during covid, stolen trucks with shimano parts so they had to postpone their new line to next year and the geo is outdated now, then we have Qayron a new local brand very oriented on cost so its getting in the game too, Slovakian Kellys and CTM. These are the budget brands. We have RB bike which is probably the first Czech brand doing gravity bikes back in the days, it has its waves, few years you see lots of them, then they dissappear. Then you can see anything from YT, Canyon, Whyte, to Yeti, Santa (Santas everywhere actually after covid) Nicolai, Raaw, Banshees, one of our racers is riding Actofive so I expect to see some of them soon in forests. What's actually pretty favourite last year's is Transition, Forbidden is getting on, few Deviates. What I miss is Zerode as I'd love to try one.

Regarding the influence I'd say only Michal Prokop has it to sell en bikes, he's building new trails where the lifts are, organising blinduro series etc. Ghost who is Tomas Slavik's sponsor is often seen as well however mostly its ridden by occasional riders (Hannes is Austrian, not a brother just same surname) and Marosi rides Trek which doesn't need advertising here. 4x is mostly pushed by Slavik with 4X Pro tour, I think Marosi is only doing those red bull actions like massive race on snow, longboards on pumptrack etc. Honestly the sport has a great fan base etc, but there are not many tracks to start on besides bmx tracks so I think there are not many riders in reality, sadly. 4x has a history around here and after UCI dropped it to dark I think it's only happening here, in Poland, Germany and Austria and that's it.

I've found a 2020 stats from one of the races Prokop did, yeah it's old but it can give you a better image what people who actually ride use:
11% Giant
8.7% Canyon
7.6% Trek
7% Santa
6.4% YT
5.5% Specialized
4.1% Cannondale
4.1% Norco
3.8% Rock Machine
3.5% Ibis
3.2% Ghost
3.2% Mondraker
2.9% Commencal
2% CTM
2% Cube
2% Scott
1.7% RB
1.5% Evil
1.5% Whyte
1.2% GT, Intense, Lapierre, Nukeproof, Pivot, Transition
Less than 1% Yeti, Actofive, Author, Dartmoor, DMR, Devinci, Banshee, Kona, Nicolai, Merida, Pole, Propain, Rocky Mountain, On-one, Orbea, Orange, Privateer, Radon etc

@ Cotic: Sorry to hear and I do hope the bikes will be recovered. At least the thieves have a good taste of bikes Wink
  • 2 0
Yeah, I feel for Cy. Seems like a top chap. Aside from the good taste, I think it was a particularly stupid choice for the thieves to choose these bikes to steal. Cotic isn't some "faceless" company and I can imagine those who'd like to buy a Cotic wouldn't want to get one in a way that hurts the company. Which makes it even more painful as the thieves will probably just sell the components and don't care for the frame.

@iammarkstewart: that makes no sense. You don't "recover" things that remain where they have always been initially. That's not "recovering" anything. It's not pedantic, it's silly writing for masses that don't comprehend reading. It's LE patting themselves on the back for doing nothing
  • 2 0
@cmi85: Having done a bit of work in law enforcement, what is defined as a crime "scene" varies greatly depending on the circumstance. It's typically a lot bigger than where the bicycle was sitting when it was taken. So without all the details of the event, none of us know how expansive the "scene" is.

What I found pedantic is you singling out something that in general, to the masses, doesn't even matter. It only matters that some bikes were stolen and some were recovered.

  • 4 1
@vinay: I mean it's pretty exotic to see around here and it causes quite an interest so it would be definitely hard to sell under the radar compared to Specialized, Giant and other major brands.

It was on my shortlist as well. I love the straight tubes and simplicity, but in the end I had better deal on something else.
  • 2 0
@bok-CZ: Oh yeah, I mentioned something similar under Dennis' post. Not just because they may be rare (and they're obviously less rare in the UK, where they were stolen, than they are in the Czech Republic) but also because anyone interested in buying a Cotic probably also cares about the company and wants to be a proud owner. It doesn't quite jive with buying a bike that's stolen. Now as someone with a bit of UK bias primarily because of getting so much of my info through UK media (Dirt, Cranked, Misspent Summers magazines, Earthed videos) I'm actually curious, what is popular in the Czech Republic then? I can imagine the likes of Michael Marosi, Michael Prokop and the Slavik brothers have a huge influence on the scene. Does that influence what bikes people ride there and is 4X really still big over there? Somehow I've got this feeling that there is a lot of cool stuff happening there which were not getting through the mainstream English language media sources.
