6 Environmental Initiatives in the Bike Industry: Recycled Batteries, Carbon Neutral Production & More

The cycling industry gets away with some pretty wasteful practices, which it often waves away under the pretense of "it's bikes, so it's green." The reality is that buying less, repairing and reusing your things, and riding more locally are the best things for the earth; however, we applaud the brands that are trying to reduce their impacts on the environment too. The perfect is the enemy of the good, so it's great to see people working towards better. Let's take a look at the recent announcements that move the industry forward in reducing its impact on the environment.


Northvolt Creates Lithium-Ion Cells with 100% Recycled Nickel, Manganese & Cobalt

Swedish battery producer and recycler, Northvolt, has created its first lithium-ion cells using 100% recycled nickel, manganese and cobalt.

Founded in 2016, Northvolt has been working to "enable the European transition to a decarbonized future" with a focus on producer and recycling electric vehicle batteries. Its latest breakthrough sees a huge development as they have been able to create lithium-ion cells using 100% recycled nickel, manganese and cobalt. Upon electrochemical performance testing of the recycled cells, they were found to have performance on par with those made using freshly mined materials.

In addition to using recycled nickel, manganese and cobalt from batteries Northvolt are also able to recover copper, aluminum, plastics and other materials which it recycles through local companies.

Muc-Off Pledges to Save 200 Tons of Plastic by 2023

Muc-Off has increased its pledge to reduce plastic after exceeding its target set in 2020.

Previously Muc-Off had set a goal of removing 30 tonnes of plastic by 2023 but it has surpassed this 18 months ahead of time as back in July this year they reached 94 tons of plastic saved. Muc-Off has now increased its goal to a lofty 200 tons by 2023. Since it announced the new goal MucOff released its new Punk Powder a completely plastic-free bike cleaner.

Call2Recycle Will Work with Specialized on eMTB Recycling Program

Specialized has teamed up with Call2Recycle to help build a battery recycling system among its retailers.

At the start of 2021 we covered the news that Specialized was working with one of Tesla's co-founders Jeffrey Straubel and his company Redwood Materials to recycle all of its US batteries by the end of this year, but now the brand has joined with non-profit Call2Recycle to help build out a network with retailers.

The result of this new program means Specialized and Call2Recycle will train retailers of its eMTBs to become registered battery collection sites for recycling. Once a bike shop has completed the training they can be found on Call2Recycle's website as a location to dispose of your batteries.

Endura Launches PFC Free Spray

Following Endura's decision to stop using PFC-based coatings on waterproof clothing, it has launched a PFC-free Re-Proofer.

The new Re-Proofer is a biodegradable and PFC-free solution to keep water out of any waterproof clothing. Endura says it will clean and restore the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on your clothes leaving them refreshed for wetter conditions.

Endura's Re-Proofer is available now with 60ml costing £3.49 and 300ml priced at £9.99.


Vittoria to Double Production Capacity with Carbon Neutral Plant

Vittoria is set to expand its operations again as it looks to spend $20 million to double its production with a new Thailand facility.

The new production plant aims to employ around 400 people and is expected to be operational by the end of 2022. To help offset the impact of increasing its tire production Vittoria has committed to running the facility with solar energy, intelligent climate control and incorporating recycled materials where possible. While it hasn't released any evidence for this claim, Vittoria is saying this will be the world's first carbon-neutral production.


Rotor Moves to Sustainable Packaging

Following the example of brands including Trek and Cannondale, Rotor has launched updating packaging that focuses on using sustainable materials to transport its products.

Rotor says the new packaging is not just an aesthetic change as they incorporated the same packaging across all of its products. With the new packaging, Rotor has used either recycled or eco-friendly materials to support its environmental responsibility.

 I’m still rocking my shorts with many holes in them from crashing and wear and tear. But stuff like this is also good. Cassettes wear out, for example. Maybe my next cassette will have less packaging than the one I bought last year.

 @jrocksdh: There are more e-bikes in the commuter world than there are Mt Bikes, reducing the amount of vehicle traffic somewhat.
As well E-Mt Bikes can reduce shuttling with trucks in some areas.

 @jaznomore: in all seriousness short cranks are the shit. If you don’t have a super low bb and you don’t ride a lot of rocky tech stuff well then, enjoy your long cranks and short shorts. Besides shorter cranks on new bikes would decrease 10mm-20mm of aluminum or carbon per set of cranks made.

 People riding the same shit arse bike still need to change the same shit arse components from time to time chances are they will be fitting Shimano components which all arrive with an abundance of plastic, paper and cardboard that goes straight in the bin. What are the Microsoft of the bike world (Shimano) doing about that I ask? Maybe its time for the big players in the industry to start making some changes.

 How about not sticking batteries where not needed? Just ride your normal bike with regular cable gearing and you do not have to worry about environmental impact of your ebike batteries. This is not about environment, it’s about selling stuff that seem to be green, simply put, corporate greenwash.

 This is all just a giant virtue signaling competition amongst companies outsourcing their production to the other side of the globe before then shipping everything back round the world to be tested and promoted by cloud hosted media outlets driving consumption of shit we don't really need, so they can then produce even more of it and distribute it everywhere.

If you wanna buy "green" cycling products then find local production and locally or even regionally sourced materials, otherwise save this shit for the people stupid enough to think it's meaningful.  @Sethimus: Our less dense cities have wider and less crowded roads than your cities and as such are much better to ride. Plenty of our gas guzzling cars are Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Our cardboard houses are heated mostly by natural gas which you Germans happily import from Russia. BTW among the developed nations the countries with highest CO2 emission per capita are. Canada, Luxembourg, Australia, and USA in #4, so it is not the biggest. Also how about those dirty brown coal power plants in the eastern part of your country.

 Imagine complaining about mining for e-bike batterys while posting this on a device in which most of the components had to be mined. Pretty sure gold is mined, and that's in all your electronic devices, as well as other metals.  Looking at Muc Off’s website it appears that saving 96 tons of plastic means their new packaging options save that much plastic over how much worse thing would have been with their old packaging. Their product still dumps tons and tons of plastic into the world. I use this lube so I am not innocent but this is partly BS marketing spin.

 @Chuckolicious: From my perspective just because of stuff like this I will never buy into PB plus or whatever it is. They will not get a penny from me. I go on this site mostly for buy and sell. I did not even read the article because I considered it a waste of time. I know quite few people who quit paying for Strava premium specifically because Strava got into Identity Politics and virtue signaling. Once my subscribtion runs out in May I am also out. Also I don't know anybody who started paying for Strava premium just because they were pleased with Strava getting into identity politics. So if somehow generating free traffic gets PB revenue they are free to stir any crap they want. Personally, if I run a website devoted to a specific subject, because of my principles I would not sell out and I would not start putting stuff that is irrelevant to the subject.

Personally, I find so many things have some sort of political or identity connotation these days, so I just try and filter that shit out and decide if the remaining content or service is worth my time and/or money. Don't pay for Strava, never did. But did get in on the early discount for TF, which I use frequently and I find is the best in its class. But to be fair, they're just reporting on what the actual bike industry is doing, so it's not like they're creating an agenda to push.

 Let's be real, the bike industry or any company that pushes people to buy a ton of stuff will never be eco-friendly. If you want to be eco-friendly, then perhaps taking up a different sport like barefoot running is better. Good luck with that. I'm going to keep mountain biking as long as possible. Cheers.

 Do all ebike batteries use 18650 cells? Why are they not made so you can replace the cells, rather than sealed units? No need to make batteries for old models, or worse, the bike becomes obsolete. As technology progresses, you can put better cells in your old bike?

 @LemonadeMoney I think many do. But regardless of cell, it's not terribly difficult to mess with your pack, plenty of YouTube videos that should help. Reason manufacturers don't is liability. Same for car packs, stationary storage packs, etc. You do it wrong and burn down a building, killing people, they don't want any part of that noise.

 ive always thought things like cassettes could be sent to shops wh probably order 50+ at a time could all be sent in one reuseable container rather than 50+ pieces of individual packaging, while it might be recyclable, it still takes energy to do so. also, chains in much longer length on a reel? i have that many 5/6 links of chains from servicing my own and my friends bikes from commuting/weekend riding over the years, that i made a chain out of them all, theyre all different colours but it still works a treat, but so many links must just go in the bin from shops!

They market a 'sustainable' power and metal bodied dispenser at the same time as continuing to sell the entire rest of their range in plastic at volume. By county, your least concerned is Franklin at 46%, you have a total of 7/44 counties that are under 50%, 1 county right at 50%, and 36/44 with more people concerned about climate change. The county with the highest percentage of concerned people is Blaine at just under 66%. Percentage of people in Idaho that think congress should do more to address global warming seems to sit around 46-47% although I have no desire to crunch numbers. By contrast, I think the number of people concerned about climate change is around 60% in BC although wording is not the same and they like to break the polls into more specific categories. We do have a ton of people that rely on logging and oil and gas and push back against the topic though. We are not a homogeneous society. But by now you should realise that your society is not either.

You are living in a social media world where algorithms can often lead you to think your opinion is pervasive in society. It is not.

I pointed you to the nature.org article with very similar numbers as the ones from the other article. Did you read it? Did you click the hyperlinks in the article which show 53% of people in Idaho are concerned about climate change? Damn near identical numbers? That should satisfy most people's concerns that those other numbers are reasonably accurate. Otherwise, I owe you nothing so Google up.
