The Union team were the victims of a robbery at the Fort William World Cup after its pits were broken into and multiple bikes stolen.

After the first day of practice the Union team arrived at the Fort William race venue to find that all of its bikes had been stolen overnight. The list of bikes includes four Santa Cruz V10s, a blue Santa Cruz 5010, a new Santa Cruz Megatower in blue and a white Santa Cruz Tallboy.

Alongside the seven stolen bikes the team also lost reserve wheels, Fox clothing and Ohlins forks and shocks. Luckily the Santa Cruz Syndicate were on hand to help out and made sure that the team could still qualify and race this weekend.

bigquotesAfter a good first day, we were heartbroken to discover that all of our bikes had been taken, overnight.

We are eternally grateful to the Santa Cruz Syndicate for helping get us kitted out and able to race Quali.

It’s a good job we’re ARD and we won’t let this stop a good time. Thanks again to all that have pulled together to help today happen.
Union

It's great to hear that the team were still able to race this weekend but it does raise questions as to how the robbery happened in what is meant to be a secure pit area.

Apologies on behalf of all Scotland - we’re mostly awesome but every country has its a*sholes.

Kudos to the Syndicate.

@browner: It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the f*cking Earth! The most wretched miserable servile pathetic trash that was ever shat on civilization. Some people hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to get colonized by. We're ruled by effete a*sholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and all the fresh air in the world won't make any f*cking difference!

Easy now it’s just some poor kids needing some bikes more than some world class downhill professionals.
I’m sure they will be put to good use or donated to charity.
Don’t be so hard on yourself.

@SchalkMarais: problems are everywhere.. let's never forget the bulk of people are GREAT people. It's a small, often desperate few, ruining it for everyone else.

Its a shame we are all led by idiotic politicians, often out of touch with the people.

In our community, man are we lucky. What a sport and people we have.

@Saucycheese: what does Harper have anything to do with my comment? Lol what?I voted for Trudeau to get Harper out and even I can see that Trudeau has infringed on Canadians civil rights to a completely different level, create divisions amongst us like no other politicians in history and absolutely destroyed our national economy.

He’s a total a*hole.Wakeup, stop drinking the fake Liberal Kool Aid buddy

@rrolly: Lol, the fact that you Canadians feel so strongly about your politicians, when your politics is so utterly banal and mundane and generally sensible, is really funny to those of us who live in countries where the politics is genuinely mental. I lived in BC when Harper was in office and my god you guys got worked up about the most bland stuff haha. I was amazed at how civilized your politics was! And people said the same hyperbolic nonsense when Harper was in. Calm down, you'll be fine because Canada is cool as a cucumber in comparison to everyone else (except maybe NZ).

You would think there would be some sort of security at a big event like this especially with the bellends we have in the world today! All they needed to do was remove 1 heras fencing panel, bloody joke
  • 8 2
You'd think after Gwin got his bike nicked in 2019 things would have improved
  • 3 0
 You would think
  • 5 0
Obviously...24 hour security + why wouldn't each team have cameras in pit..motion detection? You think supercross/moto do?
  • 4 0
Yeah there needs to be guards on site over night for sure.
  • 2 1
Wiz thinking the same thing, nae the first time bikes and kit been nicked. Security ?
  • 18 5
Not being funny but like, would you leave a tent full of bikes to fend for itself? I would have someone sleeping with the bikes at every race just in case. With taxes so high, the cost of living going through the roof and the price of bikes going to the stratosphere, it's really no surprise we have so many thieving bell ends.

They must have been locals though, no other c*nt could afford the fuel to drive there from miles away.

This country is f*cked. We need to start making stuff again, giving people meaningful work and stopping the rich c*nts getting richer and richer when their employees can't even afford bikes.

Out with the f*cking conservatives.
  • 5 0
It was 2 fence panels but we nicked one to build a ramp...
  • 15 1
Just absolutely sickening! I saw an Orbea on the roof of a car today, not locked and commented. My other half said but it’s fort William and it just wouldn’t happen here…. Absolute scumbags, how can that even happen. Security should have been much tighter this shouldn’t be possible to happen, especially to such a team that clearly top quality kit and Lille unit the budget of the big teams… absolute cowards doing this. I wish them a deadly car crash in future
  • 1 0
That orbea was on that roof rack all weekend! Defo a targeted theft! No idea how security let that happen!
  • 20 2
I believe that is a burglary.
  • 4 1
Burglary is legally defined as entering a building.
  • 3 0
@redrook: But doesn't "robbery" mean taking somebody's stuff face-to-face? If this isn't a burglary or a robbery, is it just a theft?
  • 2 0
@barp: I think you are correct. Perhaps this counts as a temporary structure.
  • 2 0
@barp: I didn't say robbery was correct either, but yes - "A person is guilty of robbery if he steals, and immediately before or at the time of doing so, and in order to do so, he uses force on any person or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subjected to force."

I was walking past the RAW set up today and the guy was giving details to the cops about a stolen bike. Cop asked him how he felt about it??!! I Obviously a standard question as he scrolled through on his phone. The RAW guy replied- glum!

F-cking robbing dick heads , kudos to the santacruz syndicate
  • 12 1
considering the car park has number plate recognition to activate the gate youd think theyd have footage of what ever van turned up to nick the bikes :/
  • 5 0
They didn’t need to go into the car park, the team vans were at the side of the trees where the climbing trails are!
  • 2 0
@Meganstuart1: They say in the article that it was the pits that were broken into though, not the vans. Teams park the vans out there because they're only allowed so much space in the pits.

As a race mechanic, i do sleep in the tent at night with tools and the bikes right in front of me. Anyone inside who wake up in the middle of the 3 hours sleep night and take a pee outside will be automatically considered as an intruder, a prime suspect and a automatically will get a tyre around him for quick lock and restrictions of action. now we have a pissword. we change it each night.
  • 6 0
 @krazyjey: pissword! I LOVE IT!!!

I have never been to a WC but seeing photos & videos I have always wondered how people (teams) don't get their bikes stolen. There doesn't seem to be any security.
  • 4 1
Like someone said it's organised now a days. With all the bikes getting stolen of late. It's obvious there going to target races now . There should be a lot more vigilance. I'm not condoning it but as a mountain biker that grown up in poverty I know what it's like to lust for bikes and can only dream of getting them. And it's only getting more of a elitest sport.
  • 4 1
I watched a youtube vid where some team showoff a bus tour, "heres where we bunk, this is where the bikes
are kept, we can store 10 bikes at 10k a pop , look at our lovely tools spares etc" even little speakers
on the outside so they can play music, its a damn catalogue window dressing for these fannies who love to just pinch stuff.
Is there no option for teams to have members sleep on site in these large bus team vans, trucks, the tech, money that goes into these bikes, cant they invest in tech, money for security and protect there investment.
Think like a theif, how would you steal your own shit, give it a go see how you get on, its really not that hard,
and way easier to make it difficult for them.

I store my bikes hanging locked together in my house, no windows room, removed F wheels and axles, wheels stored in diff room, axles in a draw, the light switch is hidden ( so bring your torch and ear plugs for few 12g blank trip alarms wired around the bikes ) the hassle to drag 6 bikes locked together no front wheels axles is gonna be fun to keep quiet, then theres the dog, so much as fart and that thing kicks of howling, if you succeed then your not riding them away at least
  • 6 3
Hopefully one of these bikes finds itself under a bus soon, with the perpetrator still in the saddle. The UK has some of the scummiest pondlife on earth. Nothing is safe from the dregs of UK society.
  • 4 0
This really sucks. However some security should be made by organisers or just the Pro teams itself.

Ive just had a bike stolen over the winter and a few years ago some kid stole 4 of my bikes like 20grand worth of bikes a year later the kid is riding the one of the bike 2 roads over lol people are so dumb most likely there still there blending

I had the unfortunate role of been told about this but one of the mechanics that all there bikes had been stolen and report it to my higher rarky officials, there’s no need for it I hate thrives I’ve had bikes stolen my self and made my day harder

Container full of Merdia bikes was emptied last week. Most of these high end bikes will end up in Eastern Europe,Cops have already found large quantities of stolen bikes over there, mostly mountain bikes.

There no cameras around the pits? Bikes are locked outside in the open, in a van, or what am I missing?

Scotland doesn’t have the market cornered on thieving spectators; this crap used to happen all the time in Laconia (NHIS). All it takes is a couple of a-holes and poof: season screwed.
  • 3 0
If I caught the thief. I would call the cops. Is he still hanging around. ?
Yes officer by his balls.
  • 1 0
Having seen some youtube video, the thieft must have been observing the target on daylight (e.g. just watch Bernard Kerr youtbe, how the fans can watch inside the tent). By night they grab and stolen the bikes.

Bike theft in the UK is unfortunately way too common.
  • 1 0
And you'll be lucky if the police do anything about apart from taking your details. Friend of mine had his bike nicked and it had a tracker Hidden in the seatpost. He traced it to a house in Dundee. He told the police where they could find it,and bugger all. He had to go with friends and get it back .
  • 2 0
@GibbyG: I've heard of this a few times. It does not surprise me at all. Coppers seem to very rarely do any actual police work. Even the rats in the speed camera cash machines aren't coppers these days I don't think.
  • 4 0
@GibbyG: Having to go to Dundee being worse than having his bike stolen in the first place.
  • 1 0
 @GibbyG: that’s piss poor policing
  • 1 0
@GibbyG: Not just the UK, I had two bikes nicked here a short time apart and I went to the Police station to see if they could work out if I was being targeted. The cop just gave me a leaflet saying to report it online and when I protested he switched to English and said the same thing again Frown
  • 1 0
 @GibbyG: what tracker?
  • 3 0
 Where were security??
  • 4 0
And how does pb not ask this Q?
  • 3 0
Consider that it might have been the security. With all the tools and parts they haul around the addition of some ABUS chains might be a good idea. Or have someone sleep with the bikes...
  • 2 0
 stealing the bikes
  • 1 0
@FlyingFish: so true. every time we hired security for construction sites stuff would get stolen. Sacking security fixed the problem!
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Going forward all competitors are going to need to chip in for overnight security.

Usually the local police detachment can be approached to see if they can being in officers on OT for security.

Was the intense van broken into at fort bill too a couple years ago?
  • 3 0
Gwin's van was broken into in Edinburgh, 140 miles away from Fort William, but unfortunately bike theft over the FT William World Cup weekend is all too common. Probably the same c#nts coming up each year. Site security looks sh#t this year, and the organisers and should be ashamed that this has happened.
  • 3 0
@Malky79: Very likely the same shower of scimbags, Seems they also operate around the tweed valley too and is getting way more common. If you are headed to the EWS in a couple of weeks be extra vigilant at night.
It is very much organized crime at this stage.
  • 2 0
@Scott-shot67: They seem to be targeting Santa Cruz bikes. Hopefully they get savaged by a Rottweiler soon.
