Armed Thieves Target Mountain Bikers in Oakland

Armed thieves are reported to be stopping mountain bikers in the Oakland Hills and taking their bikes at gunpoint.

Oakland police have so far responded to three armed robberies in the past month with the East Bay Regional Parks Police Department saying it has also responded to a further incident.

Louisa Spier told SFGate that she had been riding her bike in the Oakland Hills last month when she was confronted by the armed thieves who told her to give up her bike while a gun was pointed in her face. Louisa Spier said in the SFGate article: "I felt super scared … and super heartbroken. I love Oakland, I love living in Oakland and I’ve lived here for over 30 years. It made me feel so sad.

“I said good morning, but in that moment I could see that they were completely covered, hats with brims, masks all the way up to their eyes. The one closest to me had an arm behind his back,”

Two days after this incident two riders were inside a car parked near trails in Joaquin Miller Park as two thieves stole a mountain bike from the car and as one rider got out a gun was pointed in his face. April 6 saw two more robberies with a car stopping alongside two riders and demanding their bikes. The same day East Bay Regional Parks Police Department responded to another robbery that is currently believed to be related to the three other incidents being investigated by Oakland Police.

Oakland Police has said: "The department remains vigilant of the numerous incidents occurring in Oakland and urges you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t be distracted by your electronic devices. Do not resist. Property can be replaced."

Marin County spends more money on Game cameras, radar guns, paying rangers to hide at bottom of trails to catch bikers, then Oakland does on it's police force.

To state the obvious: any country, state or area is not a solid block. They are dozens of counties and thousands of cities combined. Just keep that in mind

Hey way back around '99 a friend handcuffed face down on the hood of a patrol car for riding a trail in Banff. It was an illegal trail, but the judge threw the case out when he heard the cop was a bit zealous when apprehending this "dangerous" criminal.

@jaytdubs: address the socioeconomic conditions that produce crime, the one thing that’s actually proven to makes us all safer (not a great answer about how to handle individuals, but crime is a product of systems not individuals). No one with power is actually interested in doing this because prisons and police are extremely powerful and profitable so we’ll settle on giving police more money for sensitivity training or whatever

This no joke happened to me. A group of us were riding at night on "hiker only trials" (if you live in the Bay they are the best trails... especially around Oakland and hence why we ride at night only). The helicopter was hovering ahead and they had multiple cops stationed down lower where the trail meets the main road.

  • 6 0
Supply chain issues aside, most people don't have proper bike insurance. Before I got a very expensive bike rider add-on to my insurance when my late model Demo 9 got stolen I got $1000. So good luck out there replacing that property. Now I get a $7k payout which is hardly enough given the current price of bikes lol.
  • 3 0
@blazersdad89: 16 years, 9 months ish, if you believe in that kind of thing. Insurance claim might be the quickest way to get a bike back, but depends on having insurance and with a non-scum provider, and not getting shot by the robbers
  • 1 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: it depends - most people wait because they want something that is not in stock, there is quite a bit of stock around right now - im lucky enough to buy bikes often and since 2019 the longest ive waited is for a canyon(which was in stock and the shipping, wasnt even the "across the world" part that was slow, our customs are super strict even though ive already paid tax, 5 days to travel from germany to my country, took 9 days for customs to even contact me, anther 5 to get it released then 2-3 days to deliver.)
  • 3 0
Exactly. My bikes are general custom builds. My insurance response would be... wait... what? Is there an extra digit in this estimate?

  • 10 0
@JSTootell: Jealousy will get you nowhere fast.

This article and all the comments begs the question of why people stay in urban areas if they can choose to leave, it doesn't matter whether it's California or Tennessee, urban places have increasing problems with crime, assault, substance abuse, homelessness, it's just the way it has become.

There was a time when I wanted to be part of the solution, I worked in community development, I did volunteer work in poor communities, etc..., but at a certain point the constant "one step forward two steps back" things wears a person out.

I still work do social work, but I made a choice to live and work in rural communities, been doing that for twenty years and I'm so much happier.

Good luck enjoying a stress free life in the city, just don't expect it to get better, and accept it that way it is, you'll be fine. Get angry about it and you'll stay angry.
  • 29 0
@nurseben: Not disagreeing with you. But the people I am thinking of weren't doing social work.

I don't care if people want to move. I wish them the best of luck. I do get annoyed at the ones who chose to move, then tell you that your home sucks and give a list of reasons that don't apply. I commute on my road bike, mountain bike, and rock climb year round. I ride my bike to the beach fairly often (though not much this year yet, oddly). I have a (for now) stable union job not far from home, and my family is still here who I help take care of. Listening to people leave and then tell me everything I like is shit gets old, when it isn't shit to me.

Recently traveled to Texas by motorcycle (rode my GSXR to Austin for the MotoGP round). Every large city looked the same no matter what state I was in. I could live in a rural part of California and get the same experience as a rural place anywhere else (I have).

"This article and all the comments begs the question of why people stay in urban areas if they can choose to leave"

Well, I have a factory union job with great benefits that I can ride a bicycle to every day. I have plenty of places I can ride my MTB, camp, go rock climbing, or anything I might want to do. I can walk down the street to the grocery store. I don't even need a vehicle to survive, though I choose to. When I was living in a rural area it was an hour drive to the nearest grocery store. My wife at the time was commuting 1.5 hours each way to get to work, I was driving about an hour minimum. Sure it was nice being in a quiet place away from people, but it was in no way convenient or easy. I don't miss having to spend so much of my time driving.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But that is what annoys me; everyone who leaves has to convince everyone that California is a shit hole but X state is perfect instead of just saying "I left, the new place suits me better, hope you have a happy life". No, they have to shit on everything and everyone, and it gets old. I can't imagine myself being happy in New York, but there doesn't seem to be a shortage of people who love it.

I have been all over the country (veteran) and there were a lot of wonderful places that I wouldn't mind visiting, but I don't see myself being happy there.

I am a middle aged unmarried guy with zero obligations (well, I voluntarily help with some family stuff). I am absolutely free to go anywhere, anytime. I chose to stay here. Why does that make me jealous? I can leave, but I like what I have here. You didn't like what you had, so you left. How about instead of being insulting you just say "I didn't like it, so I left, wish you well" instead of saying "stop being jelly loser"?

I have several friends who are honest enough to say that the grass wasn't greener in Austin, Asheville, etc, and have regrets about resettling. Stay strong Union Brother!

It's an absolute joke to say that California hasn't prospered.

Now, whether that will continue decades into the future is anyone's guess, but it's quite possible that as its social situation further deteriorates that it will adopt more aggressive policies to reign in its unruly underside, but I imagine it will continue to proposer despite these occasional issues.

At a high level, you could argue that when asset prices skyrocket it has historically been a sign of the end of a cycle.

But if we are talking current times, no one gives a f*ck who is leaving and where they are going except the investors chasing them.

Look at greater phoenix. Sold a group a site for industrial development, tripled in value while we were in escrow.

@SterlingArcher: I know, all of those flyover states like Idaho, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, etc. with really good riding. Wouldn't want to live in one of those.
  • 2 2
@HB208: you’re right - what was I thinking. There are good aspects of the “country”. If I ever want to dumb it down, I just go visit your area. Yknow, drive my shittiest truck, wear my trashiest clothes, get my racism fix in, complain about how the city slickers pushed us outta town, trying to look tough down at the roadhouse, and generally hate on everything. It truly reminds me why I don’t complain about the flyover states. Y’all were pushed out, blame your problems on everyone else, and have no solutions other than complain on the internet. No wonder gun ownership is so high in those areas - violence is the only answer y’all got left. Sad reality, but accept it. Smile

@SterlingArcher: Dude, my wife and I make very good money, and it would be more if we decided to live in LA or SFC. I am not pushed out of shit.

Its funny that you think that LA and SFC are so great when all of the in migration are going to cities like Boise, Bozeman, Austin, SLC, etc. Believe it or not, but being close to nature is a perk of not living in LA. Having to drive an hour and a half to the trails isn't that enticing to me.

Also, if we are splitting hairs here, I drive a 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie. Not exactly a shitty truck.

I live 25min from world class DH and my office is even closer…10min.

Also some incredible shuttle trails pros use to train on within a few hours, skiing/moto as well, great surf breaks in south counties…man, you’re right, horrible place.

It’s expensive, no one will argue against that. But your funny little rants against CA sound like the ramblings of a child.
  • 1 0
@nvranka: Nah, its because I don't want to show my specific income on here. I would make more money in CA, I know that for a fact. $200k isn't a lot of cash in San Fran, for sure. That doesn't EXACTLY say what you want it to though considering everyone is saying things like "the jobs pay so well." Like fine, but COL is also insane. $200k is upper middle class basically everywhere but San Fran, NY, and LA, maybe Seattle.
  • 1 0
@nvranka: Believe me, I know California is a good place to live if you have the cash and can afford to live in the towns surrounding LA or the Bay Area. Like yeah, I get it. The issue is that if you need to live in the cities, the quality of life is much less than other places. I would heavily prefer to live in a city like Seattle over LA. That's just me though.

@psyfi: You would honestly be better off with bear spray for mountain lions than a 22. The only justifiable place to take a gun IMO is some areas of Wyoming and Montana for griz. TBF, probably useless while mountain biking, but wise if hunting or hiking. You'd need a 44 mag or a 10mm though, not a 22.
  • 15 17
@arek: I offered a possible outcome, but you obviously are only interested in being a smartass.

@Trouterspace: If your gun is in your camelbak it's worthless. Would have to be on your person in an easily drawn location, cocked and loaded, and you aren't gonna pull a gun on someone who already has a gun trained on you at point blank range and win. Maybe they will get distracted and give you an opportunity, maybe not.

@arek: @arek: First she would say something like, "You picker the wrong woman to mess with." Then she would jump to the side while pulling out her gun and shoot the first two guys. She would land and roll and the 3rd guy would have realized she was too much for him and jump in his car and start racing away. She would jump on her bike and start chasing him down the street. He would be swerving and driving on and off the sidewalk while pedestrians jump out of the way. She would be trying to shoot out his tires but then would hit the gas tank and there would be a hug explosion. Later the police would be congratulating her and thank her for doing such a great job. And that is why we need more people with guns to make us safer. You're welcome.

@arek: action is faster than reaction. It's not always the best choice but at least some places allow you to defend yourself. There are millions of defensive handgun uses (read: ruled by police/courts to be justified) per year in the US. Criminals are opportunists. This rarely happens in place where individuals are well armed
  • 15 7
@MTBLegend92: You guys are insane. I’d just suggest not riding very expensive mountain bikes through areas where you need guns.
  • 9 7
@trialsracer: Millions per year, you say? Clearly this is a believable statistic not just pulled from your ass. Thank you for sharing it.
  • 7 1
 @BrambleLee: www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/firearms/fastfact.html

"Although definitions of defensive gun use vary, it is generally defined as the use of a firearm to protect and defend one’s self, family, others, and/or property against crime or victimization.

Estimates of defensive gun use vary depending on the questions asked, populations studied, timeframe, and other factors related to the design of studies. The report Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violenceexternal icon indicates a range of 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses each year."
  • 6 2
@thenotoriousmic: Yeah they're insane. Me and @thenotoriousmic think criminals have the right to take our bikes, and f*ck our wives.

"An armed society is a polite society."
  • 5 0
@thenotoriousmic: I've never carried a gun while riding, but people aren't getting robbed at gunpoint at trailheads near me either.
  • 8 3
@mobil1syn: I was prepared to say “holy shit, I’m super surprised but apparently wrong.” But then I decided to dig a little deeper. The 2.5 million number comes from a 1994 study by Kleck and Gertz that has been broadly criticized for its poor study design. It’s a fantastic exaggeration, and I’ve got no idea why the CDC would even refer to it in the literature you cited. The way respondents were sampled and weighted was way off; there was no differentiation between military/police use of firearms and that of private citizens; there’s every reason to believe that much of what made the study as “defensive” was actually criminal in nature.

The 60,000 number is likewise almost 30 years old, and also a pretty flawed study.

The truth is we have no idea whatsoever.

So, I will give the first dude credit for not pulling a number out of his ass. He was just citing a number that someone else pulled out of their ass.
  • 3 0
@Dmaxwell: I lived in Oakland briefly. A guy was getting robbed in front of my house at gunpoint (nice neighborhood near the rail station). He simply said no and decided to run and the dude started shooting. Missed all four times, but...

  • 3 0
@BrambleLee: unfortunately there is too much politics at stake for a legit study to be done.
  • 1 0
 @tomhouse: seatbelts aren't necessary either
  • 1 1
@BrambleLee: I never check my dashboard here but I just saw this by accident, so I figured I would reply. The Kleck and Gertz study has been dragged by media outlets and biased reporters, but if you look into their methodology, their statistics and their critics at an academic level (not just those with an agenda), it is certainly not "pulled from their asses". Could it be high? Sure. Could it be low? Sure. No study is perfect. If you actually read it, it provides some useful insight. Regardless of the study you choose to look at, it is safe to say that a statistically significant portion of the population uses a firearm every year to defend themselves; it's not such a small number it can be discounted by any means.

Additionally, one would not expect that with crime in many areas up, population up and more trained individuals with firearms (check numbers on defensive carry courses, etc), that there's any reason to believe that defensive gun usage is less effective now than it was in the past.

The data is certainly interesting, and something people should be aware of. However, I certainly have zero desire to live under a technocracy where preservation of my self determination is always based upon an actuarial calculation. China is lovely if that's your game.

"Property can be replaced." - clearly stated by someone that has never tried to replace a stolen mountain bike. Even if you have receipts for each individual part that you might have upgraded on top of the receipt of the bike itself you will not be getting a replacement of equal value to what you had. Even with great insurance coverage replacing a mountain bike is not going to be smooth. These people see a bike as a bike.

Some quick math - Bike costs $4000. You make $20/hr. You have traded 200 hours of your life for that bicycle. As well as roughly 10% of your annual income.

While I get the sentiment that a bike is not worth losing your life over, because that is very true, these aren't "just bikes".
  • 5 0
When we had several bikes stolen from our garage a few years back, our insurer had ~$20,000 direct deposited into our bank account within a week. We were reimbursed for replacement cost minus a $1500 deductible through our homeowners' insurance.

I supplied them with some receipts and some pictures and some web links. Some of the bikes were bought used, lots of the parts upgrades were bought on EP deals or otherwise on sale, or had been bought used. Our actual investment in the bikes that went away was far less than $20k, but we were reimbursed at new MSRP replacement cost. We didn't have to pull anything shady, that was just the way the policy worked. It was just a standard policy, no special riders in place or anything like that.

Is this uncommon? We didn't have to do anything special, don't have any kind of cadillac plan.

I do realize that bikes are hard to come by right now, and that a bike's value to its owner can far surpass the monetary value.
  • 4 0
I've had a couple bikes stolen in past few years (both in Marin County, btw) and my renter's insurance paid out more than I paid for them, VERY quickly. But they were mostly stock.

I won’t pretend the the US has zero special risk factors compared to other countries, but there is quite a bit of sensationalism in the stories you hear about the place. A little bit of risk management removes almost all of the risk. Like not going to Oakland. Really good first step to safely enjoying the US.

Not riding in the US because of stories like this would be like not going in a bike shop because the e-bikes might burst into flames. Yes, there is a non-zero probability something will happen, but if your risk tolerance is that low you probably shouldn’t be mountain biking and you definitely shouldn’t be traveling to trails on public roads.

Anyway, not telling you what to do or anything just trying to provide perspective. I hope you eventually come enjoy our trails. A lot of them are really awesome.

It's sad, but in reality this is probably the work of exactly 2-3 total human beings.

It's a bit disingenuous to bag an entire region over the actions of what is essentially a handful of individuals.

That said, I hope that these individuals are charged with multiple armed robberies and given 25+ years each.

I'm not a gun nut or anything and always found it a bit strange that some bikers carried handguns but lately I'm starting to feel differently. We have homeless in all the green spaces and I have to think about protecting my wife and kid that ride with me as well. Just in the last week the homeless in my area used a machete to kill another homeless person and attack a dog walker.
  • 6 2
It's not disingenuous at all, the bikejacking is just a symptom, the problems run very deep and are clearly far beyond the ability of the government to resolve, it's just gonna get worse, just imagine how it will be in a another couple decades.

Levels of economic inequality and crime rates have a very strong positive correlation. Canada is pretty unequal but the US is pretty much the global winner among developed countries. Even if its a tough political sell, reducing economic and social inequality is the long term solution to high rates of violent crime.

Of course we could double down and privatize policing, making it sort of like Uber or Skip the Dishes with millions of officers just waiting at their parents' house for their app to send them on a call. Cities/municipalities could contract for a basic service, but if you really wanted police protection you could get a direct private premium subscription. If you want police protection while at the trailhead then your riding group could just get together and pay the callout fee. Which would be a lot cheaper with thousands of officers waiting for the call , responding with their own gun in their mom's corolla. A libertarian utopia of sorts.

Here’s the real issue. The price of mtb’s are the price of nice diamond rings, no title like a car. Price a $5,000-10,000 bike back to a realistic $1000-2000, theft stops.

Similar to in the 80’s when car stereos cost tons of cash. Now car stereos are so cheap, nobody steals them anymore.

I grew up down the street from those trails, riding them on BMX bikes before MTBs existed or most of you bickersnappers were born. We neighborhood kids roamed JMP all the time, and nobody ever had a problem. It felt like the safest place in the world. Really sad to hear this is happening.

As teenagers in the late 80's, my friends and I rode all those trails before anyone thought to close any of them. Kind of funny, I was pretty proud of my $400 Rockhopper, but I don't think it was quite at the level to be targeted for theft, or for theives to understand what it even was. Plus, those brakes barely worked!

I'm not surprised by this, though. Theft is bound to happen in an urban environment with high poverty, low policing in the parks, and the high pricetag of modern bikes. I hope nobody gets hurt. If it happens to you, obviously, just give them your bike. Throw in some tire plugs for that matter.

Parts of Oakland remind me of what The Bronx looked like in the late seventies. Sketchy.
  • 5 0
JQM is a hot spot for car break ins & now bike theft . In the last 20 years I've never seen any police presents near Joaquin Miller ,redwoods ,Chabot or skyline gate.
  • 2 1
Yep - better to send laps on General Ed or other trails the ripoffs don't know about. Also wear cutoffs and a t-shirt, ride a clapped-out stickered-up 7 year old YT, have a fixed blade on your belt and act sketchy. Hey wait - that's me.

Edit - Just don't ride a Santa Cruz. You think the crooks don't know the difference? Oh, they know, my friends - they know.
  • 2 0
@suspended-flesh: Leona was subject to a rash of car break-ins too. I wouldn’t put anything past this crew in terms of targets. JMP is just so easy for them due to fish in a barrel concentration.
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: Gen Ed - two minutes of fun followed by an interminable sketchy climb up.

Just shoot me in the face.

I have been seeing increased patrols on skyline, increasing in density at the Clyde woolridge trailhead.

 @Willikers: Shuttles, breh.
  • 2 0
@suspended-flesh: if you want your dad as part of your crew, hmu!
  • 2 0
@Willikers: I like General Ed as a local alternative to JMP. Some days I just wan't to deal with people straddling the full width of the trail, people with headphones being totally oblivious etc.
  • 2 0
@shapethings: can't stand those people, that's why I ride weekday mornings only.

My good bell broke so now I feel totally emasculated and at the whim of some random's texts shudder>
  • 1 0
@Willikers: I might be your dad - we don't trip on ageism
  • 3 0
One of the riders is a friend. I ride there a couple of times a week - not a lot of riders on the trail during the week these days. The situation doesn't bother me as far as trail access. Maybe I'm just used to the mayhem here.
  • 5 0
Headline is wrong. If a person with a gun is taking your stuff, they are an armed robber, not a "thief". Thieves don't confront their victims.
  • 3 1
It’s all true. And very sad. I live in North Bay and have no desire to check out those trails. A BIG issue in the bay is not at the trail heads or in the park, but shuttling to and from. Thieves are following cars with expensive bikes hanging off of them. They have done the following: robbed at the trail head, rob your garage once they know where you live, or even car jack you and the bikes with it. A NorCal high school MTB team was carjacked for their van and bikes within the last few weeks.
  • 3 0
Not the bay area, but a bike mechanic down here in SoCal was recently telling me that he'd heard of at least two instances recently of bikes being stolen from hitch-mounted bike racks while the drivers were waiting at stoplights.

That's pretty brazen. Dunno if it's legit or not, but I'm now in the habit of locking my bike up for drives to/from the trailhead even if I'm not stopping anywhere. Those crappy built-in cable locks are next to worthless, and I usually don't even bother with them, but they'd probably at least stop this sort of opportunistic grab.

 "Defund the Police!!"

Emotionally based activism has consequences.
  • 4 1
@DylanH93: the police don't get there to prevent the crime. They only get there to make the report. Paying police what they are worth absolutely. Demilitarizing the police absolutely.
  • 3 0
You gotta love a state that gives more rights to criminals than responsible citizens. If CA Governor Gavin Newsom had his bike stolen at gunpoint, these criminals would be in the big house with Bubba in a heartbeat.
  • 2 0
As always...I-Pack a bowl for the ride is it time to start pack’n a gun Idk- maybe a remote detonator under the seat would do the trick that way you can get the savage off the bike and continue your ride.
  • 2 0
seriously...with all the E tech on bikes nowadays some sort of wifi enabled security device seemingly needed.
that said, if you live in a high crime area then be smart and live/prepare accordingly.
  • 1 0
@jrocksdh: no need, it’ll just catch fire when they try to charge it.

Need to ride a Spesh in Oakland then you have your own SWAT, nobody messes with your SWAT!

"Don’t be distracted by your electronic devices."

Jokes aside: wtf cops! Just do your friggin work.

You have been keeping your eye on The Land of OZ lately though right?
Avi has a lot to say about its crazy.

In the USA criminals rob you; in Australia the police do it.
  • 5 1
Good thing California has the countries most restricted gun laws, always stops the criminals...
  • 1 0
The bars not very high on that one.
  • 2 1
it's not the criminals stealing our bikes we have to worry about. it's the random people shooting up workplaces who use legally purchased guns.
  • 2 0
@tomhouse: You don't have to worry about people who legally own guns shooting up their workplace, because statistically that never happens, despite what the media would have you believe.

I actually was recently almost killed in a mass shooting.

That being said, I am much more likely to be killed by lightning strike, or by falling asleep at the wheel of my car.

If you're worried about shootings get a CCW, and carry everyday.
  • 4 2
California needs more pro 2A laws. Constitutional carry along with responsibly trained armed citizens would help alleviate gun point robberies. Anti gun laws only protect criminals. Change my mind.
  • 1 0
This is a mountain bike forum right? Who are you people? This reads like my father arguing with himself about law and order reruns.

Turn off your phones. Get a good nights sleep. Grab some breakfast and go for a long ride in the morning. Clear your heads. Repeat.

"Do not resist. Property can be replaced."

I see the LDS Oakland Temple in the photo! Bummer about the bike thieves, I'd be so caught off guard if while on a trail somebody pulled a gun on me and took my bike...
  • 5 2
Eventually someone will respond with here take my bike As they shoot the thief in the face
  • 7 2
More likely the thief just shoots them while they’re thinking of their comeback.

Check the laney college flea market on Sunday’s. Everything there is stolen….
  • 1 0
Dang, that sucks California has changed so much in the past 10 years, I went to Los Angeles some dudes tried to rob me and steal my camera downtown. Everyone is about taking stuff that doesn't belong to them.

 OK, Jello!
  • 1 0
Periodically here in SoCal certain trails have been targeted by thieves who break into cars. These types of crimes will propagate down here I'm sure.
  • 2 0
This is what starts to happen when bikes push over $10k and supply is limited. No different than stealing high end cars.
  • 6 3
These people deserve to have thier hands and feet cut off.
  • 2 3
 OK, Taliban
  • 5 6
They shoot horse thieves, and bike thieves in sensible places. We often ride armed here for bear and mountain lion encounters. Good luck getting my bike. I'll never move back to Commifornia now that they've let the lunatics run the asylum. The trails and Constitutional fire arms situation here in North Idaho are awesome. Law and order is nice. "Truth, Justice, And The American Way". Corny, sure, but it makes for a nice place to live, with great folks around. Knuckleheads don't last here.
  • 2 1
A sensible place for a sensible person. I likey what you sayey.
  • 1 3
Just FYI, the period goes inside the quotation marks in American English.
  • 1 2
The only probable action you could take, if armed, would be to let them take your bike, then cap the guy with the gun when he turns his head. You'd be shooting him from behind, most likely, which will land you a hefty prison term for murder. Not worth it over a bicycle, even if it's a big-dollar dentist machine. Insure the thing and hope for the best. I'd also move T.F. outta Oakland, but that's just me.
  • 2 1
California...a Poster child of Socialist failure. Mass exodus of corps, and capital due to woke Leftist policies, and over taxation, coupled with rampant crime.
  • 7 6
Easy solution start packing a handgun in your fanny pack. Self defense should hold up in the case of armed robbery.
  • 2 1
 Agree
  • 8 2
I’m 100% down with self defense and right to carry, but if you think fumbling in a pack when someone already has a gun on you solves this problem I don’t know what to say.
  • 3 2
@Blackhat: Unconcealed carry is safer and better.
  • 8 0
@suspended-flesh: The mental image of a guy smashing down a trail with an AR strapped to his back is both amusing and a little concerning.
No one is gonna steal his bike though.
  • 4 3
@Blackhat: Correct. You eliminate the target after they attempt to ride away on your bike.
  • 3 0
A: "I'm going riding in the East Bay Hills tomorrow, I think I'll take my Uzzi." B: "Ha ha, you ride an old 26 inch Intense?! What a loser!" A: [smiles]
  • 5 3
@Cerberon: ARs are for people with masculinity issues. Here they come.........
  • 2 2
@skystoverblouin: Good luck with that murder charge.
  • 4 1
@skystoverblouin: that's not self defense at all and if you did that in any state you'd be going to prison. you might want to learn some laws
  • 6 3
@suspended-flesh: No, AR-15s are just really good rifles. Pretty much every gun owner has at least one AR-15 if not multiple. Very customizable, lightweight, and accurate. Not a perfect design but very good and they can be had for very cheap.

Frankly, it's just stupid to not own an AR-15.

 Is skeggs still safe?
  • 4 0
I feel like skeggs is much more remote in comparison, where people couldn't just slip away into a neighborhood. Never seen anything sketchy there.
  • 5 0
Yes, except for entitled elitist hikers ( mostly weird women, and yes I've been assaulted there by one of them )....
  • 2 0
 Still sucks.

Mike Vandeman is no longer around. So yes.
  • 1 0
@wmichul: There was that crazy double murder back in in 2019 there. Not MTB related. www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Man-jailed-for-fatal-stabbings-in-rural-San-Mateo-14027896.php
  • 1 0
@shapethings: Yep that was random though.
  • 1 0
@carym: Skeggs is safe. Been going there almost every month for 5 years. Mostly just hikers and mountain bikers. Rangers are there daily.

Just don’t like how steep the fire roads are, even on a XC bike
