[UPDATED] Elite Finals Results & Overall Standings from the Fort William DH World Cup 2024

May 5, 2024 at 5:11
by Ed Spratt
The first Elite DH World Cup of the year provided some incredible scenes as the classic course delivered great racing.

After falling behind in split two Vali Höll storms through the final two track sectors to match her World Championship winning result in Fort William. Nina Hoffmann rode a great race with it looking unlikely any rider would match her time with Vali Höll and Tahnee Seagrave falling behind in split two. The final splits proved to be make or break in the women's race as Vali Höll made up 1.7 seconds to win by 0.561. Tahnee Seagrave is looking back on top form as she ends the week in third place.

Loic Bruni finally secured an elite win at Fort William as he was dominant on the Scottish course to lead from top to bottom. Troy Brosnan fought hard to take another win here ten years after his first in 2014, but he had to settle for second place 1.8 back from Bruni. Finn Iles had a great first round of the season and was the only other rider to come within two seconds of the hard-charging Bruni.

Check out the results below.

You beauty. This stream is rock solid too. Quite an upgrade from the streams from last season.

@sooner518: I was about to say, the quality is way better. But there’s so much less fly by shots, everything is overhead by drone or helicopter and I miss there being more cameras on the course

MAX is choppy and seems to buffers audio and video every now and then so y'all aren't missing anything. Maybe it's just my house though. I could do without the interview cutaways during race runs.

I think he may race bikes too

Boah...these far away helicopter shots.... its not road racing....we want to see the riders....
  • 23 5
Minnaars first crash wasn’t even mentioned because no one really saw it
  • 12 0
@You2: That kind of baffled me. I want the commentators to see more details than I do and here they didn't even notice something so major.
  • 1 1
@martn: I think Gwinn must have noticed something because he said "good to see him back". I thought he meant back on a race team, but he might have meant back on his bike following a crash. I was a bit baffled too because it did not seem like Greg Minnaar was riding very fast when he got into his crash in that turn. I'm thinking he was a bit out of it to have made that crash that got caught on camera. That's not a place the GOAT would normally fall. I'm thinking he might have gotten a concussion, and probably shouldn't have gotten back on his bike. But when you're in race mode and you have all that adrenaline running, you're not doing a good self-assessment - you just want to get to the finish line.

Yes, with the drones they seem to pivot from nausea inducing shots where they practically run into the rider they are so close to them, to panoramic views covering the whole mountain making the rider appear ant-size if you can even find them. Seems to miss the middle ground where they could shot from 100' away, moving the drone steadily and following the rider. That kind of shot would be perfect for the top of the course.
  • 14 0
@Fill-Freakin: crash right in front of me. It was just one of those crashes. Leaning the bike over a rock and the front wheel went airborne like he stuck it over the top of a berm. My mate got a clip of it didn’t make the show.

@You2: yeah it was, I watched it on the stream.
  • 3 0
Yes so stupid!!!! It's like watching an ant race !!!!
  • 3 0
@Fill-Freakin: Greg commented elsewhere that he injured his shoulder in the first crash, which led to it giving out on him and causing the second crash. Hope it works out for him.
  • 39 0
I really enjoy the more laid back approach to casting during this race. Tahnee showing up, then having her food delivered is hilarious. I’d rather listen to casters and pros talk about the race AND just random other stuff then just yelling off the same times we can already see while watching.
  • 30 1
Ric still needs to learn that he doesn't have to yell out the split times the moment they appear on screen, though. It really started to get annoying - he would set Gwin up to say something or even ask him a question, and then interrupt him to yell out a number that we can see perfectly well, and we wouldn't lose anything if he'd just wait 3 seconds for his co-host to finish a sentence. That's serious amateur hour.
  • 7 0
@nilswalk: Maybe first race jitters, Ric and Aaron were more dialed toward end of last season I thought. It was jarring today how many times that happened literally right as Aaron would start to respond. Aaron handled it like a pro though.
  • 3 0
@gramboh: Aaron did handle it well. It's all Ric I think - last year's XC coverage was even worse, he and Bart just couldn't figure out how to stop talking over each other, something that basically never happened with Warner. I figured it would get better as the year went on but it didn't. I wonder if it had any part in Bart being replaced?
  • 3 0
 Ric should be replaced.

Monday: Sales calling PM's to cry "Why don't we have 75mm bars?!"

I joke, Sales and PMs were laid off months ago.
  • 2 0
I have an 80mm riser on my Surly Krampus, love it. It's super flexy but that was the point with the rigid setup

Not sure if I'd trust this smashing any serious trails on an enduro/downhill bike though: velo-orange.com/products/hot-bar?variant=31797388968073

No commentary.......well done WB. Pushing the sport forwards.
  • 5 1
 In Germany too. Incredible
  • 10 1
No commentary and I feel like they are using the fake sounds again?
  • 6 0
Was thinking I’d clicked on an option with no commentary, glad it’s not just me!
  • 22 0
They've got two live feeds, if you go back to the home page there's another with commentary. Got me for a few minutes too
  • 5 0
Usually there should be the option to change commentary language - but it does not work for me. Only ambient sound. Audio issues seem to be common: during one of the Brasil XC races they even added the audio of a tennis match.
  • 5 0
It's the one labelled Elite Women, rather than Elite
  • 5 0
 @HankHank: thank you, but wtf
  • 1 0
@HankHank: not on discovery plus through sky there isn’t? There’s only one option to click on
  • 4 0
 @HankHank: Thank you!
@Johannes073 is right though. Wtf.
  • 3 0
Sorry, you were right. Why do they make it so difficult!

@HankHank: thank you my man. You are a lifesaver. What a useless UI discovery is
  • 7 0
@HankHank: thanks dude, although I was quite enjoying the break from Ric
  • 2 0
@Wit23: Just found it on discovery + through sky. You need to scroll across to the second feed, its got the same name, but has commentory.
  • 4 1
@noox: there is a german feed and... The ambient noise one. It said "reset app, commentary available" a few times but it didn't work. I cancelled my subscription already
  • 4 1
I hate to be such a hater but... is this broadcast situation a joke?
  • 3 2
No sound, but a lot more cameras and drones along the way. You can see almost the entire run from start to finish. After all, this is much better than before.
  • 1 0
@HankHank: on Eurosport in Switzerland there are two live feeds, neither has commentary!

Seriously WTF!!
  • 4 0
@Johannes073: Yes on the fake sounds ‍♂️
  • 42 12
Actually really pleased with the show, mens elite went on without any issues and the track coverage was awesome. Better then red bull overall i reckon. Am I crazy or what is all the hate about? Gwin was great in the booth as well.
  • 17 9
my fav part was out of sync bike sound and that drone where you barely could see the rider. awesome coverage indeed. also gwin, despite being great expert has zero energy. for me commentary was snoozefest when tahnee left
  • 18 3
They showed the entire track, which I really appreciated. We forget, but Redbull never showed the entire top section and it's one of the coolest sections of the track.
  • 14 2
@jayacheess: yup I've watched since freecaster days and I'm fairly sure that's the most complete coverage of the Ft Bill track there's ever been. The distant heli shots were of limited use but better than nothing
  • 8 6
@jayacheess: i would prefer to actuallly see whats going on on these rocks instead contemplating the pretty view

i think it made it feel more boring tbh- not much to see, gwin telling stories, next split in like a minute or more
  • 18 0
Man I am divided who is more impressive here: Nina who had really put the unchallenged Vali on her edge or Vali who despite the setbacks at the last three splits still managed to close the gap and eventually won the finals. Glückwunsch beide!
  • 7 0
It's just awesome that there is some tough competition for that top spot on the podium.
  • 8 1
 Flight Attendant beat Skin Suit

Whatever the Canyon is doing with their latest prototype, or the Specialized-Oehlins is doing with their suspension design, they seem to be working to their riders' advantages
  • 15 0
It's amazing, Bruni's bike (with suspension deep in the travel) always looks so much more planted than the competition.
  • 2 0
 @ullsen: agreed, it’s sensational
  • 10 0
@ullsen: go back and watch early Bruni on his Lapierre. a notorious high bb and short bike that even looks composed under Bruni. The Spesh is setup well but his riding style is the main difference
  • 18 0
Asa... Coming back from injury and taking a healthy af time in Elite. Let's go!!
  • 4 0
12th place in elites off the couch in first WC ever?! Dude is it
  • 18 1
Vali wins so let's follow nina around for the next couple of minutes?
  • 5 0
I didn’t get that at all.
  • 17 1
stop it with the fake sounds!
  • 13 0
Brb, going to buy taller handlebars
  • 1 4
Don't do it if your bike has a short rear end, guaranteed way to make sure your bike can no longer steer lol
  • 2 0
@90sMTBEnjoyer: My real reason not to is simple, I ride uphill!

It's all in good fun but we're giving the stack too much credit - Dak's been working hard for this a long time
  • 9 0
Anyone else’s watching a catch up race absolutely ruined by discovery channels timeline markers? Opened the app up and paused it, only to find all the crashes, pointed of interest, each rider start and the podium all marked out for me on the timeline. If you have any slight idea of the start time your watching it is pointless. Thanks Disco. Bloody useless.
  • 5 0
The IG account is hammering out live spoilers as well which makes me care even less about paying for a live feed.
  • 3 0
Had the same issue, found out you can turn it off with the icons on the left side.
  • 1 0
Yeah that ruined the women’s race for me too. For the mens I actively looked away from the screen at the start and didn’t pause. Thanks @otolo for pointing out it can be turned off… Toggle was to the right on my TV. I hope the setting is remembered for next time.
  • 4 0
Same here @Tombola27 ! I just built a Chrome extension that changes podium and crash markers to the neutral ones. So you can still make use of them without being spoilered. Get it here: spoilersafe.timostosius.de/?lang=en

 @stotimo1: that’s fantastic!
  • 13 1
Is it me or are the fake sound effects back?
  • 2 0
yeah I feel like they are or at least they are not correctly synced with the video
  • 4 0
They are definitely back. More subtle than last year but still obvious.
  • 4 0
 Yes...soooo anoying
  • 3 0
@Johannes073: The sound overall was out of sync, commentary and camera mics alike.
  • 12 3
no commentary? and fake sound effects? GET THEM OUT!!!!
  • 8 1
Two feeds. Pick the other one.
  • 2 0
I watched it on Stan Sport here in Australia and the stream was good, no issues. I already have Stan and had to pay extra for the Sport component but Im happy enough to do that during World Cup season so I can watch the DH and even XC. I'll cancel it once the season is over though.
  • 14 9
Fantasy League is not what it was and not in a good way. Prices are high and every result which is 31 st place down in mens is ignored, thats just bad gamedesign (there is a reason this is not done in the real world). Also there are qualies and semis in the real world, ignoring the points of these "other two races" distances it further from the real race. Just might give only points for semis, just to start a whole new ranking. Chances are high that a lot of guys will end up in a way different spot than in the realworld. And dont tell me just mirroring the real points is not possible, whereas we get flooded by meaningless ai data every race.(I am a real statistics nerd but the latest statistics do nothing).

The dominant strategy will be picking 1 top man and 1 top woman and filling up your team with -nobody cares bros. This is just streamlined with the 30 guys Final no fan wants. I was sceptical when I saw the new rules, but seeing how it pans out sadly more than confirms it.

Also nobody knows by which rules prices will change. I have never been a fan of conspiracy theories but this cant just come from a "lets make it better" perspective. Just one more bummer in DH racing.

Biggest whoopsie in there not being Henri Kiefer at all and him finishing top 20
  • 3 0
 @kidtrailboss: will do, thx

Car crash coverage, not even an acknowledgement there's no commentary and the sound even depends out when doing the annoying interview half way through someone's run.

The Formula 1 of Mountainbiking! I never thought I would say this but please Redbull, take over the broadcast and get Rob into the commentary box. Enough is enough.

 Yeah fake sound is horrible...

Does anyone hear comments? On my side there are no comments...

That new Sender must be work'n for them. Troy Brosnan and Luca Shaw on the box.
  • 5 0
if only we could have heard Rob Warner comment Danny Hart's ride...
  • 5 3
No doubt Bruni is fast AF but team Specialized must have a bunch of people on track set up with laser beams and timing devices to figure out what lines are fastest. Great job Bruni / team Bruni.
  • 20 0
IDK man, Bruni is one of the only riders I have seen that is able to maintain a level of composure that is next level. If you spend enough time watching footage of all the riders, he is a rider that stands out in the way that he always looks more calm, relaxed, and ready to take whatever the track is dishing out.
  • 9 0
I don't think Specialized is the only team to do that.
  • 2 0
@devinkalt: No doubt he is composed and dialed. He proves it over and over. I need his secrets for my race runs!!
  • 15 0
@devinkalt: we also rarely talk about bruni's fitness being next level. Outside of gwin I don't know of anyone who trains for every minute of the race the way he does. Takes months of hard training to look that smooth.
  • 2 5
@devinkalt: I think it's really a testament to Bruni as a rider. Obviously we don't have the kinematics for the new frame design from Specialized, but *the* major issue with the current Enduro platform (I have one!) is the crazy chain growth/pedal kickback in the last 30% of travel. The new Demo build appears to have a similarly rearward axle path, which will give a similar characteristic.

To be that smooth with a bike that has that particular characteristic takes some serious lower body strength!
  • 7 2
@CreekRider75: 100%. Did you see Bruni's HR on the top third of the track? He was 150 BPM where Finn and others were already pushing 170-180 BPM. 150 BPM is pretty casual especially for a rider of his caliber. Guy is a beast.
  • 14 0
@LocoDeerSlayer420: i would take that hr stuff with a grain of salt. Forget who it was, but someone in the women’s field was clocked at 140 at the finish line. I don’t care how fit you are, there’s no way.

Also hr at the start could have a lot to do with the riders warm up. Some guys wanna be as low and calm as possible, others purposefully get themselves hyped up which is gonna raise it right out the gate.
  • 4 0
@devinkalt: Healthy Jackson Goldstone is the only other one I see as consistently dialed as Loic.
  • 5 0
@LocoDeerSlayer420: Ronan was high 170’s right out of the gate, the Red Bulls got him!
  • 4 1
@Longroadtonowhere: Yeah the commentators actually mentioned it when Hoffmann's HR was only 140 right at the finish line, as Gwin was saying that can't be correct. They also showed Höll's HR in the upper sections and hers too was around 150. I mean yes these are some super fit people, but still the numbers are astonishingly low at times. (From personal experience I'd say with women the way the HR monitor straps are positioned may more often cause inaccurate numbers - I've often had the reading lag behind badly, staying either too low or too high - but for anyone those things aren't 100% all the time.)
  • 1 0
@KJP1230: how do you come up with this nonsense?
  • 1 1
@miff: I'm completely unclear on what I've said is nonsense. In fact, everything I've said is factually accurate.
Firstly, I own the current Enduro and rather like it. But it has more chain growth than any other enduro on the market (6.9% to be exact), which causes the most pedal kickback that I've personally ever experienced in a bike. The bike is wonderful in a lot of ways, but getting to the bottom of long and chunky descents can leave your legs feeling worked!

Having looked at the layout for the current Demo prototype, it appears to have a similarly rearward axle path, which would cause a significant amount of chain growth. Assuming this is directionally accurate, it will be a rather racy bike (as is the Enduro) and will benefit a very fit/capable rider (hence, compliments to Bruni for how smooth he can operate the bike). Again, we've not actually seen the full kinematics breakdown for that bike - but the pictures make it appear to have a similarly long chainstay and likely a rearward axle path - which supports the compliments I'm paying to Bruni.

@KJP1230: I'm not sure if you're taking the piss or not.

Apparently Eurosport's own direct service isn't the one to subscribe to if you don't have a smart TV. On a positive note, the stream quality and their website player functionality beats last year's GCN+, no issues whatsoever and rewinding the live stream works great. But apparently it's impossible to use Chromecast to get in on TV, either on the website or using their Android app. Weird choice in this day and age. I'd rather not watch the whole finals sitting in an office chair by my computer. Well, one more to go before I can switch to MAX with less money too later this month.

If you have playstation or xbox you can use that to watch.

 chromecast works with me
  • 1 0
@alexu: That's interesting, were you watching on a computer or the mobile app? On the website there's no embedded cast button on the video player, but if I try to cast the video/ tab through the Chrome settings I just get the Chromecast logo on my TV but nothing else happens. Meanwhile everything else works normally, I can cast all other video sources and tabs just fine. I now tried rebooting everything on the computer, to no effect. On the Android app there also are no embedded buttons to start the cast with. It does seem to say in their help centre that Chromecast should be supported. At least I have some time now to try and get this sorted before Poland.

Clearly Gwin has a job commentating as long as he likes. Better than anyone not named Warner.

Please, can someone recommend a place I can watch the races - I'm Ontario, Canada and I've subscribe to GNC which only showed some to the races. This year, I've tried a variety sites with no luck. Please don't fuck me off, I'm just an old dude who wants to see the show - like Red Bull used to. Thanks

FloSports is the only place, $150 for the annual sub.

Or you can try the lovely streams folks usually post here (see above), but they don't generally have replay, so you'll have to tune in live.

@adamkat: $150 USD for 6 races.... sounds like a great deal (sarcasm)

 @adamkat: Thanks !

"Amaury Pierron is another rider back at races this year". I know who AP is, thank you. Can someone who watched explain why he was so far back? Did he make a mistake or uncharacteristically off the pace?

Audio is ahead of video by several seconds in the Max app. Been like that since the end of Juniors. Yeesh
  • 2 0
And Minnar is DOWN!!!! Five seconds later, he crashes.
  • 3 0
Refreshing the app has fixed it. The delay keeps happening and then audio went out completely for me. I’ve watched the whoop ad several times…
  • 1 0
It was like that for me most of the time on GCN+ last year, when watching online and using Chromecast to throw it on my TV. MAX is launching here in a couple of weeks, at least I'll know what to expect.

He craaaashed… they didn‘t even see it??

What was Bruni's brake rotor cover for?
  • 2 0
To keep the temperature of the rotor consistent. There is a pit bits article on the home page that touches on this. It's designed to keep the splash from puddles off.
  • 1 0
Anyone know how long it takes Max to post the replay?
  • 1 0
Damn none of my riders are up there ggs for my fantasy team this race
  • 1 2
Would Richie Rude come back to DH so someone can beat Bruni more often, Bruni is an absolute power house and I’d love to see those 2 go head to head

Anyone think Rockshox flight attendant is an unfair advantage?
