Elite Qualifying Results from the Les Gets DH World Cup 2023

by Ed Spratt
After the Junior finals, the Elite racers went against the clock in qualifying.

For the Elite Women, Vali Höll is once again the rider to beat as she storms across the line 3.4 seconds up against Marine Cabirou. Sitting over 6.7 seconds back and completing the top three is Monika Hrastnik. We have heard that Nina Hoffmann has caught an illness overnight and isn't feeling 100%. Nina went down in a berm during her run and was given a disqualification.

Benoit Coulanges gets some redemption for Loudenvielle as he is once again the fastest qualifier in Les Gets. Benoit Coulanges head up a French top two as he pulls ahead of Loris Vergier by 0.981 seconds. Dakotah Norton is on great form in the second half of the season as he goes third in qualifying.

Check out the results below.

Benoit's on a mission. Also, go Dak!
  • 40 0
I'd love to see Benoit finally take his first win!
  • 12 0
@bashhard: Same, it's about time! Such a likeable dude
  • 12 0
@bashhard: Definitely. The guy is just so damn consistent, and he's been working his way up the rankings for years. It's about time he landed on the top step.
  • 11 0
@bashhard: first win would be even better since it's his local!
  • 3 0
If you check fullattacks post loudenvielle video, there is a rumor Dak does not have a team for next year...

 @w0dge: this isn't reddit, dork

136th - still not what ACC was back in the day.
  • 8 2
@meathooker: think the sport as a whole has progressed since then so hard to compare versus 20 years ago.
  • 1 0
@LegitLegato: no, but it's an ace way to bait wankers into revealing themselves.

Hoping for a first time winner again this weekend, Benoit, Dak & BK would be stoked with anyone of those dudes getting the win!
  • 6 0
Man, I missed the fantasy league.
  • 2 0
@Rageingdh: It would have been the most interesting year for fantasy league in a long time.

Good to see so man privateers making the top 60 too just shows what talent Chris ball is trying to get rid of!
  • 17 1
pretty wild the amount of big name riders that have consistently not qualified for semis this year, and the amount of new names consistently in the top 30.

Dude who are you talking about lol

Honestly, I really want Finn to take the overall. He has been pushing it to the top since last 2 seasons and last year if not for missing 2 races (or 3) he could have taken the 2nd overall or a win. Loic has won so many and it will be refreshing to see someone like Finn scoop it. I think these confidence boosts are such a gamechanger, see how Dak, Benoit and Kolb are performing after their successes this season. Finn needs one of them.

So Blenki is coming down right after Loic. I'd love to see that live, one guy just flat out and pinned and the next guy fast af but just having the best time.
  • 6 0
 Ex-teammates too
  • 1 0
@IllestT: I always wonder how Blenki's career would have gone had he gone to Trek with Gwin and Justin instead of Lapierre.
  • 12 0
Awesome ride from Oliver Davis to slot it in 6th!
  • 1 0
Yeah the Steel City Media team is exceeding expectations.
  • 8 0
Ryan Pinkerton has a better time than Bruni. How much faster will the elites ride in the finals?
  • 8 1
How is Kaos allowed to take a crack at a World Cup but Brayton cant race?? Also good to see Connor Fearon in!
  • 10 0
 I think it's because he's a member of a team.
  • 27 0
Yes. He's a member of a team. As others have pointed out, you (or I) could effectively pay the price to have an elite team and show up and race at a world cup regardless of points. It's a crap system that bodes poorly for things to come.
  • 17 1
@Hogfly: I actually don't think it's a problem that teams can nominate riders. It's part of the concept of the world cup as being driven by trade teams, as opposed to the world championship. And it's important that within this system, national teams can also nominate people to race in their jersey. The major problem in the Brayton situation is that they basically didn't consider the situation where someone was regularly going out in the semi-finals of world cups and then not earning any UCI points to stay in the series, even as they were earning world cup points. That just looks like total ineptitude.
  • 3 0
@Hogfly: That rule isn't new. It's been the case in previous years. The only difference is the way they're faffing about with semi points.
  • 30 0
@Hogfly: at the moment it’s 11k euros to register a team and you can have up to 10 riders. If I was I a privateer I’d find 9 other riders and create a team. 1,100 has got to be cheaper than travelling around chasing points.
  • 7 2
I'd rather watch Brayton than Kaos.
  • 3 1
@fatduke: agreed. Kaos is amazing to watch on a bike, he is obviously happier doing the freeride stuff. Brayton makes the top 60 and is a great racer
  • 7 0
 the hoff is off

UCI has posted the semi-final start list. . Nina is on it. She will be the 7th rider down the hill.

 Les Go Dakota !
  • 3 1
Does anyone know if guys like Finn or Goldstone had a slip or mistake somewhere? These times are not typical of them. Same with Greenland.
The french guys definitely have an upperhand here but 5 secs is quite a time for top riders to trail behind. there must be a slip out or little mistake somewhere.
  • 4 0
It's hard to tell, but it seems that at least Jackson had a moment before the first split. 112th ranked there and then was on pace. With Finn and Laurie it doesn't seem like that so much, my guess is they're using their experience; it's a steep track and all the tech/time is at the bottom. They probably want to stay fresh for as long as they can through the week so they can throw down in finals where all the big points are
  • 4 0
Jackson's quali run POV is posted on Youtube if you want to watch to see if you can spot a mistake.

Maybe at about the 0:26 mark on the video?

@Bibico: for sure. He just missed the middle of the rut and the front wheel pushed on the inside edge. Good save but lost a lot of speed. Goes to show how insanely precise these guys are 99.9% of the time to find the support
  • 2 1
@Bibico: @Bibico: He pushes the front on a berm early up and loses a ton of momentum. If he keeps it clean he'll be on the podium at least.
  • 2 0
Syndicate social media reports that Jackson, Greg, and Nina are all sick today and had to do qualis in a low energy condition.
  • 1 0
@ABhardtail: greg still the fastest at the first split
  • 3 0
@PauRexs: maybe he was rushing to get to a toilet...
  • 2 0
Is Dakotah Norton on a mission right now? I get most of my WC news from podcasts, so not really in the know, but the way he’s portrayed himself on the B-line was as a pretty utility guy, however, with last rounds podium and this rounds qualifying, he seems to be on a heater right now.
  • 3 0
Apparently he does not have a team for next year so he is all in in order to secure his spot somewhere. Source is fullattack video post loudenvielle
  • 2 0
@winko: does anyone no the details? Seems like an odd choice if Intense/Gwin have dropped him.
  • 2 0
These kids are crushing it! We are witnessing the “changing of the guard” right now. Obviously Jordan Williams and Jackson Goldstone are in the mix, but these other young dudes like Oliver Davis, Remy Meier Smith, Jack Piercy, Dylan Maples, Austin Dooley, etc. are all right in the mix. Would love to see a young gun take the win this weekend.
  • 2 0
Is Thibault being under 23 still considered part of that?
  • 1 0
I agree, its so good to see
  • 3 0
How many qualify for the women's final? Emmy Lan probably on a Dreadnought flying into 15th in quali may make the final I'm guessing.
  • 4 0
Top 15 plus possible protected riders outside of that, so yeah Emmy Lan is in, but into the semis at this point (not finals yet).
  • 2 0
She's on a prototype DH bike, if I had to bet. They've had all team riders on them for a bit now.
  • 4 0
Not much content from PB Racing? Cathro back at it, hope he has a good run. Did Kolb crash? Dak gets his win this time!!
  • 2 0
Even though he didn't qualify Cathro put down a great comeback run.
  • 1 0
This might be a silly question, but what exactly is the benefit of a fast qualifying time? For instance in Formula 1, the faster you qualify, the higher up on the grid you start. I guess in DH being the last racer to go could let you know how hard you need to push it? If say, a few guys before you crashed or had slow times?
  • 3 0
Does a dsq in qualies mean a protected rider like Nina won't be allowed to start on race day?
  • 7 0
No, as long as she rolled out of the start hut, she’s protected.
  • 2 0
 @nastynate711: thank you!
  • 2 0
@nastynate711: Yeah, but did she roll out of the start gate? Usually when they do, and then they don't finish, there's a DNF.
  • 1 0
@chmurka3rg: you don’t get a time recorded when disqualified. She may have gone outside the course.
  • 1 0
@chmurka3rg: If a rider rolls out of the gate but doesn't finish, they could get either a DNF (did not finish, either an aborted run or a crash) or a DSQ (disqualified, usually from going off course and not re-entering in the same place). If they don't roll out of the gate at all they will be given a DNS (did not start).
  • 5 0
 No Daprela, No Party!
  • 1 0
Where is Daprela? He's not even listed as DNS. What was the outcome of his trip to get checked out after that crash?
  • 1 0
@HappyBiker19: he told the world he's broken his wrist. Scaphoid. Out for the season.
  • 1 0
@e-fro: sounds like a broken scaphoid
  • 2 0
@owl-X: Missed that, thanks. Too bad! A pity for Titi.

  • 4 0
Roger Vieira ifrom Brasil in19th, excelente result!
  • 5 1
 Hoffmann DSQ? Why?
  • 7 0
Whatever the reason, I hope it doesn't mean she doesn't get to race in the semi-final. They wiped her split times, so I don't know if that means she's not considered to have even started the race.
  • 5 2
 @Bibico: Protected riders, bud
  • 6 1
@scott-townes: I know she's protected. I just don't know if being DSQ'd eliminates her from further competition at this event.
  • 1 0
Most likely scenario is she’s gone off course and not gone back to re-enter where she left.
  • 3 1
@Bibico: just looked at the rules and can’t find anything at moment.

What I did find was interesting that the DSQ for going out side of the course is at the discretion of the commissar, unlike most other DSQ reasons which are fixed

4.1.035
If a rider exits the course for any reason, he/she must return to the course between the same two course markers where he/she exited.
In case a rider fails to return to the course as provided for in this article, the commissaires’ panel can disqualify the rider.
(text modified on 1.01.16; 1.01.19)

If I’d been Spesh manager last week I’d have been pointing that out as Finn didn’t gain anything same with quite a few other instances where riders have accidentally gone of course and not gained anything
  • 3 0
@Bibico: as a protected rider, all she has to do is roll out of the start hut and she’s good
  • 2 0
She had a crash, was just posted on her IG. Looked like it hurt...
  • 3 0
@nastynate711: Yeah, typically that gets you a DNF. She apparently got back on course in the wrong spot for the officials to pull the DSQ card. Would be a weird one if that would also disqualify her for the subsequent parts of the event.
  • 4 0
@MindPatterns: Just saw an IG post of the crash. She wrote that she caught a cold and felt weak today. "Pushed too much in Qualis for the current strength. But all good!". Crash did not look too bad.
  • 2 0
@cypher74: If Finn wasn’t DSQ’d and still managed to collect some point, you could potentially have a series winner that wins with points they gained from braking a rule. For that reason, I think Commissaire’s just DSQ everyone.
  • 1 0
@scott-townes: what makes a riders protected? Is it uci ranking?
  • 4 1
@mtbwillems: top 3 in the overall in the overall from last year are protected straight thru to the final. Top 10 in the overall this year are protected into the semi
  • 1 0
@Bibico: No, qualification is just to qualify for the semi and finals, just as the name indicates. It gives you some points towards the overall if you do well enough but its minimal relatively speaking.
  • 1 0
@cypher74: if he recognized his error and tried to correct to stay on course he likely would have crashed. Setting the precedent of not DSQing riders who go outside the course would be a poor one. I would be fine with making it a hard and fast rule, no discretion. You go outside and don’t re enter at or before the spot you went out then you unfortunately are DSQd.
  • 1 0
@pisgahgnar: Yeah, I guess that's fine unless of course the rider leaves and doesn't reenter the course. Which would be a DNF. If it doesn't have consequences then it doesn't really matter indeed. I suppose if a rider crosses the tape and realizes it isn't worth fighting for a good spot, it is more convenient to reenter the course and ride down (to be DSQd) than work your way down the hill outside the tape (and get a DNF).

 Anywhere to watch qualis?
  • 27 0
 Track side.
  • 3 0
I would've thought that since they broadcast Junior finals just before elite quali that they would be able to broadcast qualis. Especially if people are paying for it. I pay to watch motorsport in Aus and we get to watch everything including support categories through the weekend.

Anyone know what the asterix means after some.riders names in results and live timing? Doesn't seem to match up with protected riders

@Bird-in-dirt: im not sure. I was just looking at the splits. Looks like 2nd sector or a bobble in 2nd and 3rd somewhere for Jackson. No doubt he'll clean it up

@won-sean-animal-chin: first sector. Nearly lost his front. Missed the rut. It's uploaded in GP's yt channel.
