[UPDATED] Final Elite XC Results & Overall Standings from the Araxá XC World Cup 2024

Apr 21, 2024 at 9:16
by Ed Spratt
The results are in from a nail-biting second round of the 2024 World Cup XC series with all-out performances from the women's and men's races.

Haley Batten got redemption after her round one final lap crash as she secured her first elite World Cup win. The women's race saw some close battles before the final lap showdown between Haley Batten and Jenny Rissveds brought the race to a thrilling conclusion with a last-minute attack pushing Batten into first by 17 seconds. Matching her position at round one, Savilia Blunk took another 3rd place this season.

Continuing the excitement from the women's racing we saw an incredible 80 minutes of racing from the elite men with a last lap full of drama as Simon Andreassen secured the round two win. Following an attack on lap seven Victor Koretzky's lead looked unmatched until a drivetrain issue saw him drop back to fifth, opening up the lead position with half a lap left. The race ended with a four-way sprint as Simon Andreassen managed to best Victor Koretzky, Alan Hatherly and Filippo Colombo to the line.

Check out the results below.

Haley Battens last lap - wow. Absolutely ripped the legs off the rest of the field In the last ten minutes. Stunning.

The USA riders are flying, the last couple of laps were great to watch. The XCO track looked top quality too.
  • 2 0
She raced a lot smarter this round compared to the last round. Super patient until the last lap.

Wow again, after that women's race who ever thought the men's could be as good as that!

The modern tracks are absolutely superb, the old school XC and tech, brutal, brutal climbs and the fantastic supercross/BMX style sections are bloody brilliant. What a last lap. Credit for Koretzky for being able to dig so deep after than mechanical, and incredible finish from Andreassen. What a race.

Totally agree. Also huge props to the course designers for making a track that's technical AND still allows lots of overtaking. A few times in the past I've been hyped for technical XC courses only to be let down when the tech features aren't really a deciding factor, or they become such a bottleneck that the race gets strung out too quickly (MSA a couple years ago). Pretty awesome to see the front group(s) stay together through the whole race. Tactical racing is always more interesting than just seeing one guy ride off the front for 3 laps.

Gotta feel for Blevins, dude is having the season start of his life and first race in the Overall Leader's Jersey he goes down in a crash that isn't his fault less than a few minutes in. Looked like a racing incident but still a bummer for the guy
  • 5 1
Well he didn't crash due to bike handling skills, he's one of the most stylish riders on the circuit. Looks like he just got squeezed off the course
  • 18 18
How is it not his fault? He chose his line poorly and tried to go where there was no room.
  • 6 2
@opignonlibre: I see it that way to. He tried to find a gap that wasn't there.
  • 9 0
@nozes: I agree, a mistake in decision making, not a mistake in technical bike handling skills. XC racing requires both for the best results. Make bold moves and sometimes you get burned; play it safe and miss opportunities......
  • 3 0
@dcaf: That start was so friggin' chaotic and insane, I still can't believe there isn't a giant pile up every single race at the start. He just popped up that hill, and I doubt he could even see that stick he hit until he was right on top of it. This wasn't a flat straight area where he just drifted. He was coming straight up a short steep hill, and it was a very common lane he was in where the concrete curb was busted out. He couldn't have nailed it any better if he tried LOL. But that's just crap luck in my opinion. In all that amped up mayhem, out of view.

I really like how the XC tracks develop away from climbers to all-round talent courses. The BMX sections are a cool add-on.

Anyone else having issues with streaming the race on Max?
  • 3 0
Yes, it keeps saying "event ended" from the women's and won't show any men's footage. Anyone know what's going on?
  • 2 0
 Yes. Very frustrating.
  • 2 0
Yes, I get the same thing. Tried chatting with a support agent. They just ended a chat with no offer for help. What a clown show.
  • 1 0
 Yup. Same. Damn
  • 7 0
 Yes i'Tiz a damn shame.
  • 1 0
 It’s working now
  • 3 0
@louisreilly: It won't let us rewind. We prefer not to start watching a race on lap 7. Really disappointing, MAX.
  • 1 0
@eckljkr: Just tried to start the race now and this is where I am stuck—it won’t let me go earlier than lap 7 of the men’s race. Tried on multiple devices.
  • 2 1
oah!... eurosport, max... all failing!... what a coincidence ...
  • 1 0
It's the same with MotoGP. Hopefully Max is working out how streaming live events should work. One big issue I have is that you have to bookmark each race as opposed to the entire series. It would also be cool if the phone app sent an event reminder like the Redbull app does. It's for sure buggy but I'm happy that it's on a service I'm already subscribed to.
  • 1 0
@eckljkr: When you click the live stream you are on the "Join Live" button. If you scroll right one button there is an unlabeled button that is "Join from Start". This will take you to the beginning of the broadcast. I am able to rewind the live broadcast without issue by pausing the stream first and then rewinding on my AppleTV.

Once the women's race is over it says "Broadcast Ended" for 15-30 minutes. Then the men's coverage will start in the same stream. If you pause the live stream and then try to come back to it, you cannot watch it via that link. You then have to go to past events to find the race and fast forward to whatever point you were at previously. When watching past events it will save your place if you leave and come back.

Finally, for this specific race they mis categorized the race once the live stream was over. It was showing in future events after it finished, but if you clicked the link it took you to the recording. This was the one screw up in the stream, but everything else worked as expected.
  • 1 0
@salespunk: Nope, we tried all that a bunch of times - "join from start," "join live," everything. Nothing worked. We got kicked out of the men's stream (never paused it and tried to come back). It was a mess.
  • 1 0
@eckljkr: same here. Tried all kinds of things while the race was going on. Later that day I was able to watch the replay. Just stayed away from social media so I didn't know the winner.
  • 1 0
 @eckljkr: well that sucks
  • 17 0
Camera work on the course is terrible. On the men’s sprint to the finish, several camera shots blocked by trees.
  • 6 0
After all the drama with the stream not working, I almost threw the remote at the TV when the camera kept cutting away from that incredible sprint finish to show a wide overhead panorama shot or a crowd shot.
  • 3 0
Wrong graphics at the end as well. Had the woman's results up.
  • 13 0
Both races were amazing! Very tight till the end.

And good news! Seems that they confirmed that in 25 and 26 we will see races in Araxá again!
  • 12 0
A shame for the commentator that didn’t know andreassen has won an xc race before !
  • 4 0
There have been other errors too - did anyone catch Ollie calling Sina Frei "Sine-a Free"? And Laura Stigger "Laura Sty-ger."
  • 2 0
I laughed at the TV and told my GF the same thing.
  • 8 0
Great track and good racing. The standard of technical riding in XC is clearly higher than before, there were multiple riders hammering it through the tech sections. With improvements in both bike tech and rider ability it would be nice to see more tracks like this, and some that push things further.

Nope. We already have DH racing, XC should always prioritize aerobic fitness.
  • 4 0
@Henchman21: We already have road and gravel racing, XC should be like it was this weekend!
  • 8 0
MAX doesn't seem to be showing any pre-show content or men's warm-up and it starts in about 10 minutes - anyone else know what's going on?
  • 9 0
That was some of the best racing I've watched with some of the worst camera work
  • 2 0
Came here to say the exact same thing. Great course. Great racing. Shite coverage.
  • 1 0
I thought the coverage was pretty good, until the men's sprint, did they over screw that one up.
  • 10 0
So, USA womens olympic team is clearly Blunk and Batten ya?
  • 6 0
Oh, no. USA Cycling will screw up the selection process. Is sort of a tradition for them now.
  • 1 0
I thought I found their document listing the criteria, but I can't find it now. But two top 5s in the first three world cups was one of the criteria to meet. So yeah, they've qualified I think, unless a different American were to win in nove mesto. I'm not sure which was a higher priority, a single win or the two top 5s. Haley is in either way.

@brianb11: CXhairs has a great explanation and analysis of how it all works an what needs to happen for Blevins tobmale it. cxhairs.substack.com

What the hell are these americans eating. They've jumped from middling to the front in no time.
  • 2 1
it's the olympic year.. you gotta perform.. we rule the world..
  • 5 0
Not really, these racers have been coming up the ranks.
  • 8 0
Our high school racing leagues have gained a ton of support over the past 5-10 years and those riders are starting to show that success.
  • 1 0
 Wheaties!
  • 3 0
The problem may be that they are having to peak to get selection and then they won't be at their peak come Olympics.
  • 1 0
@iamamodel: in the same way I would bet other relevant riders are not peaking at all now to wait for the olympics...
  • 1 0
@PauRexs: Correct. The Americans may be doing well because they are competing against each other for selection (as Jenny said last week) and others are holding back. That Americans are doing very well right now may due to these two things. As I write elsewhere, cometh Olympics we'll see who got their timing right.

@dtheio: love Jenny giving zero f#cks and the commentators constantly apologizing for “language” lol

 What happened to Lecomte?
  • 4 2
She will be tailoring her training for the Olympics, she will peak later in summer as will PFP.
  • 7 0
No clue if it was her or the bike broke. She was crying on the sidelines…
  • 1 0
@xcjoe: Oh crap. Missed that bit.
  • 5 1
Trying to watch live on Max, after turning it off after women’s, and all I get is the intro but with this woman who doesn’t know f*ck all about biking.
  • 1 0
Yeah when I click the live stream, all I get is a replay of the women's race.
  • 2 0
@Willemhc: same. Very frustrating. Max customer service support has been useless
  • 2 0
@erkkilaurila: Agreed. I'm on the live chat right now.

Lifetime Series and World Cup/ World Tour are different disciplines with different athletes. Not much crossover between the two, although a few Lifetime athletes have started in WC/WT and switched over. Lots of Lifetime athletes have not been a part of WC/WT beyond some early career dabbling.

This was supposed to be in response to a post below

Casual fan of XC who is a little confused by the points system for overall leaders. Pardon my ignorance but what is the middle score representative of? Is it qualifying rank? For Hailey Batton her points for this week were (1) 330 / (1) 80/ (1) 250 The 330 is for XCO first place. The 250 is for the XCC first place I think. However, what is the 80 points for?
  • 1 1
I think 80 is for XCO (short track), 250 is for XCC (the longer race), and 330 is total weekend points. XCO is worth less points as it is a shorter race but finishing higher gives you a better starting position on XCC Sunday.
  • 5 0
@dcaf: XCO is the longer race - cross country Olympic. XCC is the short race - cross country criterium. A percentage of the points you earn in the XCC will transfer to your overall XCO points tally. In the case of coming first in the XCC, 80 points will transfer to your XCO total, hence 250 + 80 = 330.
  • 1 0
@dcaf: Seems obvious that the top number is the total now. LOL Thanks
  • 2 0
@handynzl: yup, I got those two reversed.
  • 5 0
 Let's go Jenn Jackson!
  • 3 0
3 US women in the top 10? F-me, feels like the 90's!
  • 3 0
What’s happened to Loana Lecompte? She used to destroy the field consistently.
  • 1 0
My guess is she will peak for the Olympics. There are a few of the big guns who are near the front, but not AT the front, and will be for a few races, and then we'll see who got their timing right.

Bummer for Koretzky. T-Type trash ruining his day...
  • 15 1
Hard to say if it was the drivetrain or Koretzky at fault here but it surely looks not good for the Transmission after all the marketing hypes. To rub salt in the wound the victor Andreassen was on the usual Shimano's mechanical... Still, there is no denying how amazing Koretzky was for able to catch up after what seems to be a catastrophic yet slight technical issue and to lose to Andreassen by what? One hundredth of a second? What an amazing feat by him.
  • 15 0
@dustyvoid: How would Koretzky be at fault here? SRAM claims the mech will self-limit, self-index, and that gears can be changed under full load.
  • 3 2
@mrbrighteyes Didn't Amos win all 4 events thus far, both Short tracks and both XC's? Batten won both days...the list is long for successful t-type wins.

Gave me flashbacks from when my AXS came unpaired during a race last year. And once I got it paired again it was shifting the opposite direction from how I had it set up before.
  • 3 0
Nino's partner in the Cape Epic this year had some major chain retention issues too. Chain dropped like a dozen times in a single stage or something stupid like that.
  • 2 0
Anyone else got no commentary on the feed?
  • 6 1
 That's actually a good thing.
  • 1 1
When does the men's race start?
