Women s start.

The first round of the 2019 XC World Cup is over and the controversial track in Albstadt provided some great racing, no matter the weather. In the Elite Women's race, current World Champion Kate Courtney would take the lead in the first lap and continue to build a gap to second place throughout the race. Taking her first Elite World Cup win after winning XCC on Friday shows Courtney is the one to beat this season. After a tough race, Jolanda Neff would cross the line in 2nd place only 49 seconds back. Anne Tauber would be looking strong the whole race, but a huge crash after her front wheel washed out on one of the new wood sections would mean she crossed the line 4th. Yana Belamoina fought her way through the ranks and would eventually end up in 3rd position.

Although taking the win in the women's race, the Scott-Sram team would not have luck on their side in the Elite men's race. Lars Forster would be looking good at the start but after three crashes, the last of which may have caused injury, his race was over. Teammate and current World Champion Nino Schurter would not have a great race either and looked to be struggling to find power. He would finish sixth. Mathias Flueckiger took over the lead on the third lap and would look unstoppable for the rest of the race. He will be the man to watch this season. Mathieu Van Der Poel didn't have the best of starts. but he would quickly find a rhythm and moved into second place on the last lap to finish with one of his best results. Jordan Sarrou would be right behind him, 33 seconds off the winning pace. Titouan Carod and Florian Vogel would complete the podium, around one minute and 20 seconds off Flueckiger's speed.

Kate was the strongest: no doubt about it.
Yana Belomoina was amazing, from the fourth row to the third place.
What a shame for Anne Tauber, that crash wasn't the best birthday gift.
Jolanda Neff the best taking risks on the downhills.
  • 6 0
Jolanda vs Kate could be an epic rivalry.

Whoever approved those changes on the track should be fired!

@eaxs: Yeah I'm sure a lot of roadies were praising this course design.
  • 8 0
I agree would have liked more tech, but it was redesigned for the flow. All those sections in the past you would see riders dismounting and waiting in line or just running the section off their bikes. Thought the race was still exciting, especially in the rain. Those wood features are slick. Next week is a completely different course with tons of tech.
  • 8 0
Well more tech is better that's for sure, but not if it causes choke points where everyone except the first few that got a gap have to walk. Makes racing less exciting imo

Well, I first thought the same. However, Albstadts soil and rocks pose a huge problem when wet. The only solution would be to completely remove the soil and rocks in technical sections and bring these in from elsewhere - not very feasible. There have been serious injuries in past years, so imagine putting in a (proper) technical course. It is a tough balance for organizers. What Albstadt did really well is providing spectator access to all corners of the course.
  • 2 0
@ikeizer: I agree with you. Imagine “Devils Corner” in that race if they didn’t put the bridge in. We wouldn’t see anyone riding it, just running it; and bottlenecking in the pack. That course just made for a faster race, just another aspect of racing. Next week will be technical and different pace.

That’s because he is not really a toad cyclist, he just also races road
  • 2 0
@scissors888: Give it a season or so and the contact he'll sign will make sure that he is, from then on, more or less exclusively a road rider. That's where the money is.
  • 4 0
@harriieee: True. But he has said he's focusing on 2020 Olympics, so I can see him going solely to the road/CX with the occasional MTB race after the 2020 season.
  • 4 0
@harriieee: He's already on a significant amount of money; He's basically Canyon's No1 rider - and covers 3 disciplines. It's possible his current team will go World Tour in a few years, and they're happy for him to mix & match different disciplines. Another team wouldn't...I hope he stays were he is...

Got all TOP3 correctly in an incorrect order. And wooden planks on wet slopes - high IQ decision from organizers.
  • 12 2
You noticed the chicken wire on those planks, didn't you? Should be easier to ride than the mud in Albstadt...
  • 7 5
@eldiddo: you did notice the crashes? There's going to be more of those in the mens in case you missed. The track is shit, no doubt about that.
  • 26 2
@Muckal: any place you can ride a bicycle is a wonderful thing and never s***. You just have to pick the right tires and attitude.
  • 11 0
@oldtech: Agreed. The best way to deal with tame trails is to under bike yourself with semi slicks. Tame trail is now sketchy AF.
  • 1 1
@Boardlife69: i usually ride a Forekaster/Ikon combination at home, tame trails are still tame trails, it's more fun in the wet though. This is a World Cup still
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: there's the right tire in Attitude for every course

That was a nasty crash for Kate Courtney. Glad to see she was able to recover from it.
  • 7 0
It looks like Anna Tauber's crash was exactly like Kate's: losing grip on the front wheel right before the turn.

I see that as potentially being trouble later during the Men's race as well.
  • 2 0
@Verbl-Kint: I imagine that the women’s race will have made it nice and slippery for the men!
  • 2 0
I really hope all of the riders who crashed on that corner are fine; Anne Tauber's crash looked bad, and I don't think it was a soft landing either.

Yana Belomoina was absolutly amazing! Kate as well. Well done for Flueckiger, he kept an amazing pace. Sad to see Lars off the race.

6th Place for Chloe Woodruff, so awesome! Her first World Cup top 10! She's been killing it this off season! And of course awesome to see Kate take 1st after her short track win too! Awesome to see USA performing well early on!

Looks like Jenny Rissveds has started her own team and is getting back in to racing. I hope she can return to World Cup competition if that's one of her goals.

I think her story continues to be inspirational given her openness about mental health issues and the pressures of competing at such a high level.

Congratulations to everyone who finished and everyone who gave it their all in trying. So glad women are taking such an interest in mountain biking.
  • 9 7
You realize women have been racing since the beginning, right?
  • 22 3
@SangamonTaylor: I've been racing since the early 90s. Back then I would go through a whole season and only see one or two women racing. You do realize until the last few years women have been a rare sighting in the woods on mountain bike trails. I now see more women in one weekend then I used to see in a whole season 10 years ago. What a great thing.

I think he meant to say that he's so glad men are taking such an interest in women racing bikes. The top step of a podium and some sex appeal might be the reason?@SangamonTaylor:

@oldtech: I saw some of the Red Bull Pump track championship just outside of Basel yesterday, there were so few women they had to ask female spectators to join in to make the event valid!... One of them had never ridden a pump track before and rode it on a town bike with stand and rack! Full marks to her for stepping up though

Welcome to the internet Mr. Burns.
  • 3 2
@korev: this is exactly how I remember the early days of racing. The box with the one or two entries. Usually never enough females to even fill the Box. It's definitely getting better and more competitive every year. At least in the Enduro and XC scene.

I'm so glad that women are taking an interest in mountain biking like I'm glad children are taking an interest in mountain biking. Super fun. I know you mean well. But, they've actually been there the whole time.

Also, great ride for Chloe Woodruff.

Awesome races... Kate was very convincing she continued where she left off last season. MVDP paid the price for going with Nino at the beginning but he recovered while Nino blew completely. Men's race would have been a total carnage on the old course. Can't wait for next week!
  • 6 1
Well-deserved victory for Kate Courtney and Mathias Flückiger, it turned to be a technical track after all.

Awesome race Kate--you're the best! Also Cheers to Rob for the kind words regarding USA MTB racing.
  • 5 0
Shame Lars couldn’t get his stem torqued properly.
  • 10 0
The stems and levers are deliberately low-torqued so that they can be adjusted without tools in the case of a crash. Also help not destroy the top tube if the bars spin all the way round.
  • 4 0
The SID has a carbon steerer too
  • 1 0
@dougfs: Thats true but yikes, his stem was scary loose. You could see his mechanic tighten it up in the pits. After that first crash when he straightened his wheel out with no effort, I was stressed to see him continue to ride. Yikes.
  • 1 0
@dougfs: Why would they undertorque the stem? I personally keep my levers undertorqued just for that reason, but I can't see any reason to keeping the stem loose if you already keep the levers loose.
  • 1 0
@dougfs There's low torque and then there's low torque! The initial fall that Lars had on that grassy corner was a nothing crash and should never have resulted in twisted bars.

It's not clear from the footage later in the race but I wouldn't be surprised if the reason he crashed again after that was cause his bars went one way and wheel the other?
  • 2 0
In conditions as tough as these, we see lots of riders go over and lose a fair bit of time. Wouldn't the slight gain in weight/rolling resistance be worth it to stay upright?
