That first win is edging ever closer for Benoit Coulanges.

The third round of the 2022 downhill World Cup in Leogang provided another day of incredible racing. In the Junior Racing, Phoebe Gale laid down a dominant run to pull ahead of the fastest qualifier Jenna Hastings by 14 seconds. Round one and two winner Gracey Hemstreet had to settle for third place today, just over 15 seconds off the pace. For the Junior Men, it was Jordan Williams who built on his Fort William win to pull ahead of Jackson Goldstone by four seconds. A great performance by Lachlan Stevens-McNab puts him in third place.

Camille Balanche proves she is once again the one to beat in Leogang after a perfect and controlled run saw her take the win by over 11 seconds. Myriam Nicole had some problems at the top of the course but kept it clean the rest of the course to take second place. Eleonora Farina also had a great run to secure third. The Elite Men saw a first-time World Cup winner as Matt Walker just beat fellow British rider Danny Hart to the line by 0.325 seconds. Angel Suarez had an amazing run to take third one and a half seconds back.

Check out the results below.

3:47 am PDT

Veronika Widmann goes across the line in sixth place, nearly 28 seconds back.

3:49 am PDT

Next up is Mathilde Bernard who went green at three splits but missed out on the top spot so far by nearly five seconds. Missing out on the gap jump out of the woods could have cost her a lot of time.

3:51 am PDT

Frida Ronning ends her run just over 24 seconds back from Louise-Anna Ferguson.

3:52 am PDT

Monika Hrastnik was on a great run but a small crash in the woods could cost her the lead.

3:54 am PDT

After a few mistakes in the tricky woods section, Monika Hrastnik goes into second by only 0.382.

3:55 am PDT

Nina Hoffmann is a huge 11 seconds up going into the woods. She crashed here in qualifying so can she make it clear today.

3:56 am PDT

Disaster for Nina as she goes down twice in the woods, this section could be the decider for the win today.

3:57 am PDT

Nina Hoffmann goes 11 and a half seconds back and into fifth, Louise-Anna Ferguson continues to lead with five riders left.

4:03 am PDT

Myriam Nicole puts on a masterclass through the woods to take the top spot so far by 4.6 seconds.

4:05 am PDT

A massive crash in the stumps for Marine Cabirou, she is up and on her bike but this will be the end of her run today.

4:09 am PDT

Vali Höll crashes in the second split after going seven seconds up at the first split. Vali could bring this back if she has a good run through the woods.

4:09 am PDT

Vali is only half a second back going into the woods, this could be close.

4:11 am PDT

A small crash in the woods means the chance of winning has gone for Vali Höll.

4:12 am PDT

Vali Höll crosses the line in fifth place, 13 seconds back.

4:12 am PDT

A huge first split for Camille Balanche as she is over seven and a half seconds up. Can Camille make it three wins in a row here?

4:13 am PDT

Camille is almost eight seconds up going into the woods, will she make it clean and take the win?

4:15 am PDT

Camille Balanche wins for the third time in a row in Leogang with a massive margin of over 11 seconds!

The top five Elite Women are:

1st. Camille Balanche: 4:08.218

3rd. Antoine Pierron: 3:39.478
4th. Neko Mulally: 3:41.204
5th. Dan Booker: 3:42.229

5:11 am PDT

After the first 35 riders the top five Elite Men so far are:

1st. Jacob Dickson: 3:35.834
2nd. Kade Edwards: 3:36.170
3rd. Greg Williamson: 3:38.413
4th. Dean Lucas: 3:38.642
5th. Antoine Pierron: 3:39.478

5:15 am PDT

Despite a mistake in the woods, Dakotah Norton goes into the top spot so far today by just over two seconds.

5:23 am PDT

Dylan Levesque goes across the line in second place after a scary entrance to the gap jump out of the woods.

5:27 am PDT

Luke Meier-Smith attacks all the way down the course and just makes it into the top five.

5:28 am PDT

Loris Vergier is flying with a two-second advantage going into the woods.

5:28 am PDT

Loris ends his run over one and a half seconds up and in first place with 20 riders remaining.

5:30 am PDT

With 20 riders still to start the top five Elite Men so far are:

1st. Loris Vergier: 3:31.944
2nd. Dakotah Norton: 3:33.638
3rd. Dylan Levesque: 3:35.441
4th. Jacob Dickson: 3:35.834
5th. Kade Edwards: 3:36.170

5:36 am PDT

Antoine Vidal was on a rapid run that ends with a crash in the woods. He didn't lose too much time but it will be enough to stop him from getting a top result.

5:42 am PDT

A huge mistake for Greg Minnaar as he goes off the track and has to turn around and go back through the tape.

5:43 am PDT

After going off the track Greg goes into 26th but does set the fastest time through the key section.

5:46 am PDT

Amaury Pierron goes into the lead by almost one and a half seconds, can he hold this and become the first Elite Male rider to win the first three rounds of a World Cup season?

5:49 am PDT

Angel Suarez takes the lead by only 0.160 seconds and ruins Amaury's winning streak.

5:55 am PDT

Andreas Kolb puts down a wild run to cross the line in third place, 0.8 off the lead.

6:02 am PDT

With 10 riders left the top five Elite Men so far are:

1st. Angel Suarez: 3:30.370
2nd. Amaury Pierron: 3:30.530
3rd. Andreas Kolb: 3:31.249
4th. Loris Vergier: 3:31.944
5th. Dakotah Norton: 3:33.638

6:16 am PDT

Thibaut Daprela was on a wild run but loses control in the woods and goes down.

6:21 am PDT

6:21 am PDT

With five riders left the top five Elite Men so far are:

1st. Angel Suarez: 3:30.370
2nd. Amaury Pierron: 3:30.530
3rd. Andreas Kolb: 3:31.249
4th. Loris Vergier: 3:31.944
5th. Charlie Hatton: 3:33.232

6:23 am PDT

Laurie Greenland was green by three seconds at split one but he must have lost a load of time somewhere as he is over five seconds back at split two.

6:25 am PDT

Laurie completes his run in 15th, it sounds like he looped out on a manual at the top of the course.

6:27 am PDT

Danny Hart is green going into the woods! Can he keep this momentum in the steep stuff?

6:28 am PDT

Danny takes the lead by over a second, he is definitely going to be in the top four today.

6:31 am PDT

We could have another new leader as Matt Walker is only 0.058 going into the woods. This could be very close.

6:32 am PDT

Matt goes green in the fourth split, can he keep this to the line?

6:32 am PDT

Matt Walker goes fastest by 0.325 seconds after an incredible run.

6:36 am PDT

Finn Iles looked to be a threat for the win but a slower fourth split knocks him down to sixth with one rider left.

6:37 am PDT

As Benoit Coulanges starts his run we are guaranteed a brand new World Cup winner today.

6:38 am PDT

Benoit is almost half a second up at split two, the woods section is where this race will be won or lost so it's not all over just yet.

6:40 am PDT

A nightmare for Benoit as he crashes in the woods! Matt Walker will win his first Elite World Cup.

6:41 am PDT

The top five Elite Men are:

1st. Matt Walker: 3:28.816
2nd. Danny Hart: 3:29.141
3rd. Angel Suarez: 3:30.370
4th. Amaury Pierron: 3:30.530
5th. Andreas Kolb: 3:31.249

@mikaeljc: I’m totally joking around. 11th place is not unworthy of respect. With the guys in the top of the field these days, coming in top 20 is pretty f*cking good

@tullie: I'm aware, I watched that live. He also won without a chain. He has stated he always said he struggled in the wet living in so cal. He moved to Tennessee and with a better field this is a great result.

Probably do even better if he stopped bringing his wife on track walks and posing with her for instagram photos and focus more on his race prep. You never saw Gretzky or Jordan’s wives hanging out at practice just saying.

Unreal dominance. Such composure while still racing fast. 11 seconds in this modern era is massive
  • 8 0
@stretchza: Absolutely. Great riding but so strong mentally, too.
  • 4 0
Great riding, without crash in her run. But also interesting than Nina's split before she crashed was equal to Camille. Seems this woods part is not her favourite
  • 1 1
I'm a fan now. What a dominating performance
  • 3 0
So composed and dialled. Super impressive.
  • 3 0
Both Camille and Nina have incredible core stability that translates to looking solid, stable and composed on the bike. Which means less “mistakes “ in the line you take and therefore the less time you loose. Recently saw Nina’s Instagram doing skipping while standing on a Swiss ball and recall Camille talking about doing double decker wobble/skate board mcore stability exercises.
@ringle79:
  • 1 2
@stretchza: Def a perfect performance coming from Cam, but considering Myriam still suffer from post concussion and crashed during the race, you can’t really say dominance.

On a Downtime podcast a while back they talked about a study done on the G's a riders body goes through in enduro, iirc they regularly hit 6Gs on compressions, only for very short instances though. Think it was this episode, It's a good listen www.downtimepodcast.com/lewis-kirkwood

Yeah great show and Danny boy in 2nd . Watching Benoit’s run was edge of seat stuff !
  • 44 1
The differences between Camielle and Valis race runs was complete opposites. Vali looked to attack everywhere and Camielle took her time on the tougher sections and applied speed when needed. Incredible clean race run from Cami. Well done!
  • 7 0
Vali looked to be fighting the bike somewhat, Cami was really composed. A lot must come down to setup, and that Commencal is something special.
  • 7 0
Camielle has mad core stability which is critical in the wet. Camielle race strategy and execution of mud tyres and not pushing it in the woods paid off when the other top females all seemed to crash. Vali has had bad luck with her crashes in the past. But today was probably the wrong race plan to push so hard in the places she did. She will dominate at some stage. But not knowing when it will be makes racing interesting
  • 5 0
@gcrider: Great description! It's clear that Vali's abilities are there but it's almost like she's a superhero that has to learn to control her powers. She's super young still. I would have loved to see her run complete against Balanche's run.
  • 2 0
 Camille?...

Dumb dyslexic kid. Sorry Camille @chmurka3rg:
  • 3 0
She does that philosophy "Ride smooth to ride fast", rather than "trying to ride fast". It works every time.
  • 7 0
@gcrider: Easy mate, dyslexic is not dumb Wink
  • 1 0
@primarydevices: not the first time either. She was also fighting her bike in Fort Williams. She complained on a podcast that her mechanic wasn't listening to her issues with the suspension and he suggested that she should change her riding instead.
  • 2 0
@Nuss-95: interesting, I didn't know that. Something is definitely off in the setup. Bike doesn't look right at all (size/suspension etc.). Such a contrast to Cami.

I recall LAF did a Megavalanche a few years ago. Excellent GoPro footage on youTube of her duel with a girl in pink who was in front most of the race.
At about 2/3 distance, Pinkie had a minor spill and Ms F got tangled up in her bike. She apologized and let Pinkie take off again in the lead. World class DH etiquette - always root for her after that

Laurie: 46.419
Angel Suarez (2nd on split 1): 49.440

There was only 2.5 seconds between 1st and 5th... So he could have basically won the race if it had all gone to plan!
Unbelievable scenes!
  • 6 1
Maybe he went full speed through the first timing gate when everyone else was on the brakes, which is why he crashed....?

He said in the finish area that he looped out of a manual though, so not sure how that stacks up.

  • 14 3
I think what tends to set Vali apart from the more tenured racers is that she gets SO frustrated when she doesn’t perform well in races she thinks she’s supposed to win. That being said, I think she’s one of the most skilled athletes in the women’s category. She just needs to chill out and have a little fun.
  • 12 2
Yeh it does look that way. She was so dominant in juniors, maybe she just hasn't really had the opportunity to learn how to deal with not living up to your own expectations. Just speculating of course.
  • 2 0

  • 15 1
Kade really seems to be on it this year, consistent (ish) top 20s and perhaps the most steezy rider out there makes him a bloody valuable asset for trek.
  • 9 1
So sorry for Oisin. Obviously got a bit too hyped but that will come in time. To have the fastest time in the tech sections in qualifying ahead of all those legends is amazing. Not often a first year elite has the fastest section on a track. His time will come.

  • 5 1

Great W's Race! Marine's crash was wild showing the rut depth in the stump section where she went OTB and just disappeared completely! Scary as hell

What a race! My money was on Greenland, and he was going to win this by a mile, but it wasn't meant to be. Anyway,Leogang may not be the most exciting track to watch, but the racing there is proven to be the stuff of legend.

The old leogang track was the best when it was just balls to the wall flat out speed and the top ten were all within a second of each other.

@thenotoriousmic: the old one was too bikeparky, nothing technical and no line choice. But yeah, the racing was close
  • 10 1
 Phoebe Gale!
  • 1 0
Yeah, she'd have been fourth in the elite!

the track has dried up? Weather seems much better
  • 1 0
@eekamouse: Could be, but then a dried up bottom woods section could be loads slower as it clogs.
We'll see on the live coverage I guess!

Good stuff here but can I just say how yuck those Specialized banner ads look with their «butter collection»? Seriously whitey tighties with skidmarks.
  • 5 0
Junior- Phoebe Gale, would have placed 4th in pro woman.
  • 4 1
Big differences between 1 and 2 in both juniors. I guess 2 people just forgot it was slippery and went faster?
  • 5 0
 Jackson crashed
  • 4 1
When is PB going to come forward and tell us that Benoit Coulanges is just Mike Kazimer in act? Rooting for you Kaz!!
  • 1 0
@Kayco; WAIT.....Kaz or Levy? I think you meant Levy. Smile
  • 3 0
@PACNW-MTB: both are way too short to be Benoit
  • 3 1
Didn't we used to have a seperate posting with the actual start list in previous years? It's not the same as the reverse qualifying order, is it?
  • 5 0
 What a race!
  • 4 1
Overall, a good day for the Intense crew. 2 of the top 11 spots + a 31 from the young Sherlock.

How hard is too hard when it comes to a WC race track?

By the time I woke up (west coast USA) it was down to the last ~12 men’s riders, and I found the level of competitiveness a bit underwhelming on the whole. I love when the last 10 riders bump each other off the top step of the podium, but most riders just crashed or slid out enough to ruin any chance of winning. The women’s junior & elite had massive time gaps, presumably for the same reason.

I know the weather can be a huge factor, but I wonder if there’s some way to mitigate that, even a little bit? Especially with a road gap after a particularly gnarly section!

Don’t want to come off too negative - I still love watching the unbelievable skill of the riders (even when they crash!). And it was great to see how well Matt, Danny, and Angel did. I just REALLY love when it’s tighter at the top!

Isn’t the main idea to stay on your Bailey’s and in control…………just saying.
  • 1 1
 Ah try bike

major respect to DannyHart….he’s still dialing it in. must be his bmx background

How does a rider like Laurie lose 8 seconds but they have no camera on him and no idea what happened?
  • 16 1
because they don't have cameras covering every inch of the track
  • 5 0
He told Pierron that he looped out on a manual.
  • 1 0
There are always two riders on the track at the same time, so you can't show both in the live stream. There is usually a part of the upper section missing.
  • 2 0
What happened to Cathro? Did he not qualify?
  • 1 0
In the post-race interview Matt Walker mentioned "bold" tire choice. What was he running?
  • 2 0
 Get in there Mon.

Now, now, how did we do for fantasy dh?
  • 1 4
Vali must be rubbish to crash twice Lol
  • 1 0
Eh, she tried really hard to compensate her first crash and thats why she crashed again in the woods.
