Kaos Seagrave doing Kaos Seagrave things.

The seventh round of the 2022 downhill World Cup provided legendary racing at Mont-Sainte-Anne. In the Junior Men's racing, Jackson Goldstone secured the win on home soil and we believe he also took the 2022 overall title. Jordan Williams crossed the line just under four seconds back with Bodhi Kuhn completing the top three. Phoebe Gale took the win in the Junior Women's race with a dominant run and a gap of almost seven seconds to Izabela Yankova. Gracey Hemstreet ended the weekend in third and will still be chasing the overall at the final round.

Vali Höll takes another win this year as she pulled over three seconds ahead of a hard-charging Nina Hoffmann. Eleonora Farina was the only other rider to beat the fastest qualifying run and crossed the line in third. Myriam Nicole was leading even against Vali by over two seconds after split two but a flat tire took away her chance of a win.

What a final run! Finn Iles pushed past unbelievable pressure to take his first World Cup win in Canada. Finn becomes the first Canadian to win at home since Stevie Smith in 2013 and he didn't have a chain at the end of his run. Laurie Greenland put down a wild run that seemed unbeatable right until the very end.

Check out the results below.

12:18 pm PDT A flat tire for Andreas Kolb puts him all the way back in 39th place.

12:32 pm PDT Amaury goes into the finish in 25th, this may not be enough.

12:34 pm PDT Greg Minnaar is only 1.6 back at split three, can he pull it back through the rocks?

12:35 pm PDT Greg goes off line and straight into a tree. He is quickly back on it and finishes 14 seconds back.

12:36 pm PDT What has Finn Iles done at the top of the course? He is over a second up at split one!

12:37 pm PDT Finn is still 0.2 in the green at split two.

12:38 pm PDT He extends the lead to half a second at the third split. This is wild from Finn Iles.

12:39 pm PDT One second up at split four, can he keep this going?

@snomaster: This made question what is Specialized hiding. As we have seen there are tracks and section of tracks that having a chain make you slower. Gwin has proven this. Could they have a device that gives the rider the ability to make the chain disconnect? Perhaps a freewheel in the cranks/BB that could be locked or unlocked and controlled by the rider. Not trying to take anything away from Fin but it will be interesting to see what is under the cover.

For those that didn't pick up in the after race Jackson stated thats the last race he is commentating for Red Bull. I take it that discovery has poached him to do the series next year. Very good news if so, because if we can't have Warner, Eliott is the next best thing.

Podium finish is literally that, standing on a podium 1,2,3.
When in the hell did a podium finish become top 5, stop trying to make everyone a “winner”
It doesn’t, in any way detract from an amazing race, and a spectacular result, but let’s stop pinning participation ribbons on people.

@suspended-flesh: quick bit of research, I don’t see anywhere that refers to 4th as a podium finish.

Does any other sport call a 4th and 5th a podium finish?

@onawalk: they literally have a podium with 5 spots. Like all you have to do is watch the videos or pictures. Lol at you Bro
  • 8 0
@onawalk: blame the Australians that wanted to have Cadel Evans on the podium at a World Cup/Champs back in the day when he was a junior racing against the elite pros. This was the birth of the 5 person podium in MTB and frankly, we're the better for it.

Just cause I tell you the sky is green, doesn’t mean it’s green man.
4th and 5th have never been a “podium” position in anything other than this.
Just a little critical review of why on earth in WC DH it’s considered a podium
  • 2 0
@lepigpen: there has to be some Gwin hate. I just said I was rooting for home to win and I got downvotes. Idk why. I also mention Finn would be my bet to win lol.
  • 1 2
@bdickieson: just questioning why we would see a 4th and 5th place finisher considered a podium.
I cant think of a single other sport that does, and let’s be honest, a “podium” finish has long predated WC DH.

Just cause I tell you the sky is green, doesn’t mean it is
  • 2 2
@handynzl: that’s interesting, I wonder why, and who would have okay;d that decision.

Why are we better for awarding 4th and 5th as a podium?
Where do you stop, should the top 10 be on the podium?
  • 1 0
@lepigpen: I’ll be honest, I’m not a Gwin fan, but I’m also not a Gwin hater in any way.
I love that he has such backing from mins fans, prolly much like Loic and Amaury would/do on French mtb forums.
He’s an underdog, and we love an underdog story. I’m stoked he’s up there in the top 5, really puts some acknowledgement into his training/process/work ethic.
All these guys are unreal riders,
I’m willing to bet we legitimately see Gwinner on a podium, if not this year, then next. The dev work on that Intense is pretty astounding really
  • 1 3
@onawalk: Honest question: why do you spell it "prolly?" If you take the rightful/conservative stance on top 3 being podium then why give way to such dumbassery in terms of basic communication?

@onawalk: I don't know why it's so important to you, but if you raced you'd understand that's just the way it works at lots of events. I am very happy to have a few 4th and 5th place DH medals from all kinds of races from Sea Otter to ProGRT, Mammoth, weird local stuff, etc, in my collection. I received them on a 'podium'. I did not complain that only the top 3 should be honored. Now, in DS racing, yes, only the top 3 get medals. Notice how PB lists the results above? It's not an arbitrary choice - it's tradition
  • 2 2
@suspended-flesh: I’m not sure why you don’t think I race, or what that even has to do with anything.
I raced DH, XC, and DS for years, along with motocross. Never in my experience has there been a 4th or 5th place podium finish, granted that was 15-20 years ago. Raced 24 hr races more recently, still no 4th or 5th place podium. It’s not a tradition, as we can all agree, I can’t think of another sport that “podiums 4th and 5th place.
Being on the “podium” finishing 4th or 5th brings no more prestige to that placing, and certainly doesn’t detract from the accomplishment, but if you were to tell a casual acquaintance that you “podiumed” finishing 5th in a DH race, your being misleading, a d they would walk away thinking you finished either 1, 2, 3….
  • 2 0
@sonuvagun: I mean, asking the question is fine, but you prolly didn’t need to follow it up with the snide remark.

Spent a long time travelling Asia, made some good friends from Oz, and picked it up from them, along with “fair play” and “brolly”
Speech, linguistics and basic communication is a pretty fluid thing, and ever changing. Look at the world of emojis and short hand, that are rapidly changing how we communicate.

Not sure that my use of prolly, is that much in terms of dumbassery, but coming from you, I’m gonna take that as a compliment. Is dumbassery a word, would that be ironic, prolly.

Also not sure why the belief that 1, 2, 3 are podium finishes is considered a conservative stance, but there you go I guess.
  • 4 0
@onawalk: It is tradition in mountainbike racing. Have you been living behind the moon?

Everyone mountainbiker knows that a podium is 1-5.
  • 1 2
@onawalk: Those promoters you raced with were too cheap, then!. I was just looking at something: Google 'Stevie Smith Hafjel Podium' and count.....

....or you may remember Snowshoe

@suspended-flesh: did some more poking, and a quick read of the Cadel Evans story.
Funny that a request by the promoter to award a Junior who admittedly was a rare young talent became something that continued on.
In no other sport, or competition can I find reference to a 4th or 5th place being a podium position. I think it’s something that is unique, and well there it is.

I still don’t understand, but in the interest of sanity, I’ll leave it where it is.

But for real, we don’t really think it’s a podium finish right….my bad…

Friggin ribbons for all!
  • 1 1
@onawalk: interesting notion on dumbassery. There are linguistic tools by which we can transform words into abstract nouns, adding -ery observes such conventions.
Writing our words so that they represent a toddler's pronunciation is stupid. Are we going to also write constly, definly, litly, simply, etc to also reflect the laziest most incompetent pronunciation?
  • 1 1
@onawalk: Ribbons and orange slices! Maybe positive affirmation is out of control but don't hate the player hate the game.
  • 2 1
@suspended-flesh: nope. Didn't have to Google that. Been racing and following this sport for 35+ years. Google didn't exist when they made the 5 person podium.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: Cool - I did and learned about the Cadel Evans situation that way.
  • 1 1
@sonuvagun: Seems like you’re just trying to argumentative for the sake of it.
Given you’re understanding of language, and how they are an evolving, living construct, surely you can understand local dialects, and how one might pick something up.

Pretty far from where we started, but keep on trying I guess.
  • 2 2
@suspended-flesh: And to be clear, I dont hate on anyone about Gwins performance. I hope I made that clear, I want to see him do well, even get back to winning ways.

I guess the idea of a podium to me, would be top three, the inclusion of Cadel Evans at the time made some sense given the location and achievement. I dont agree with it, as I think it dilutes the tradition, etc of what standing on the podium means to everyone outside of MTB, but I’ll try yo keep that to myself….
  • 1 1
@onawalk: Argumentative for the sake of it? No, I think I provided you a legitimate rationale for both my creation of "dumbassery" and also why this "prolly" thing is regressive (insofaras the way we express ourselves is a reflection of where society is at). But you say it's because of how impressionable you were when you met some Australians, so that's that.
  • 1 1
 @sonuvagun: you’re very right,
My personal use of the word “prolly” both written and oral, prolly isn’t having any large impact, as important as I like to think of myself.
Give your head a shake, you’ve lost sight of what was originally being discussed, and are trying to create an argument of my use of a word, that has no affect on you or anyone else either, but good on ya.
Appreciate your concern, think we will all be just fine.
  • 1 1
 @onawalk: whatever
  • 2 1
@onawalk: Okay, sorry to bring this up but is this your thinking?
You're against top 5 being considered as podium finishes, cause that's not how it's supposed to be...something to do with some NZ influence.
You replace the word "probably" with the toddler's version, cause language is changeable and fluid ...something to do with some AU influence.

I dunno, maybe I've got you mixed up with someone else.
  • 1 2
@sonuvagun: I thought it was “whatever”
Have I gotten under your skin a bit?
It’s not worth it man, really it’s not.

My original “gripe” lets say was this notion that 4th and 5th were a podium place, where in every other sport, would not be considered so. I did some research based on another posters info, and recognize where it comes from, and the underlying problem that then likely occurred once that first decision was made. If I’m honest, anything outside of first, is simply not a win, that’s my opinion, and I recognize it’s not the prevailing one. You choose to celebrate what you see fit, I’m cool with it. Maybe I’ve softened my initial stance, but also noted that it’s prolly not a big deal.

I, much like the entire world, do use slang words, some are fairly common to everyone, some prolly not. Not sure why my use of the word is so bothersome to you, but I guess that’s your deal to sort out, not mine.
I’m comfortable enough that your opinion of me, and my choice of words doesn’t bother me.
Keep on keeping on my man
  • 3 0
@sonuvagun: It was defo not any NZ influence on the 5-person podium. That was totally those 'ockers,

"Prolly" is used colloquially in many places, NZ, Australia, Canada, UK...but should not be confused with brolly which is a colloquism of umbrella.

Can we all ride our bikes now?
  • 1 1
 @handynzl: cheers
  • 1 2
@onawalk: Well, it was whatever, but then I thought you're probably not even picking up on your own double standard; may as well spell it out for you.
Under my skin? Nah man, you're doing a good job of reminding me how emotional Canadians are these days.

When are we allowed to start calling Goldstone and Williams sandbaggers in the Juniors? Their times would've put them 3rd and 5th in elite, which is nuts. I know that happened in Andorra as well, but the conditions of the track were super different. This one feels legit.

I don't get one thing: 5 years ago, when Gwin won in the pouring rain, I had to wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning to watch the race live. Now it was in the evening here in Central Europe, as it should be, as Mont Saint Anne is 6 hours behind. So why was the race in 2017 at 6 o'clock in the morning?! What am I missing? If it's stupid, be kind! Peace!
  • 1 0
Hot damn, even without competing in qualifications and finals, Camille Balanche is still leading the overall. Now that is dominance. I haven't done the math but I suppose she would already have taken the series if she had made it on the podium at MSA. Still hoping she'll make a quick (and proper) recovery and manages to secure that title.

Is starting hut straight to 2:50 down the track the best they can do? Really? Not saying we need to see every corner but 60%+ of the course is just ignored....
  • 5 1
It's because of starting times. Top20 in quali gets more broadcast time.
  • 4 0
@lettak: he's talking about the track coverage rather than the number of riders
  • 1 0
This is the thing that strikes me when people compare EWS coverage to DH coverage, as though the DH coverage is perfect. They show relatively little of the course despite having a way bigger budget and logistically it being significantly easier (covering 1 course vs. 5-6 through a day).

It's just hard, and the way that the RB coverage is this patchy (in terms of course shown) despite how much experience they have doesn't lead me to believe things are likely to suddenly improve for the EWS any time soon.

I guess we'll find out next year what all that sweet sweet Discovery money can do...

What happened to Amaury?
  • 5 1
His bike got tired and took a nap right after the Stevie Smith Drop
  • 1 1
Amaury is now only 249 points up on Finn so he did not lock the overall today. If he scores 0 points at Val Di Sole and Finn wins qualifying and finals again it goes to Finn. Otherwise Amaury will win the overall next race.
  • 5 0
@tbmaddux: Pretty sure there are no qualification points in the final race of the season, the quali points are added to the points available for the top 20 results in men's, and top 10 for women e.g. 250 points for the win.
  • 6 0
@tbmaddux: from what I remember they usually only award points for the race and not qually for the final round. So it will be all or nothing in the race. Amuary would be smart to qualify mid pack and cruise down early and safely to pick up the few points he needs. But I expect he'll just go full send as usual...
  • 4 0
He went way inside/off line on the Stevie Smith drop, had to make a 90 degree turn at the bottom but the loose ground didn't let him, rode straight into the berm and couldn't save it.
  • 1 0
@Malky79: ok then Finn has to win and Amaury has to score 0
  • 4 0
I hope Amaury isn't concussed from that crash - it looked like his helmet bounced pretty hard off the ground. And if he did get a concussion I hope the team learned something about handling those better after Myriam's experience of not taking enough recovery time earlier this season.
