[Updated with Overall] Final Results from the Snowshoe DH World Cup 2022

by Ed Spratt
Camille Balanche will be hard to stop in these techy conditions.

The results are in from some wild racing at Snowshoe. In the Junior Racing, Gracey Hemstreet mastered the tough conditions to come out on top by just over three seconds. Pinkbike Racing's Aimi Kenyon had an incredible run to cross the line in second place and current World Champion Izabela Yankova finished in third. For the Junior Men it was once again Jackson Goldstone on the top step of the podium as he found over five seconds on Tegan Cruz. Sebastian Holguin Villa completed the top three, nine seconds off the pace. Pinkbike Racing's Jackson Connelly crossed the line in 22nd.

Camille Balanche backed up her top qualifying run with the win in Snowshoeas she managed to go the whole week without a crash. Camille's wild run placed her four seconds up on Myriam Nicole who had a big mistake in the third split. Nina Hoffmann wrapped up the top three, six seconds behind.

What a race for the Elite Men, the track was drying but it still wasn't easy for the final riders. After not even thinking he would race this week Amaury Pierron proved once again why he is the rider to beat this year pulling a first World Cup win away from Bernard Kerr. Mountain biking's fastest vlogger still managed to take his best results in 15 years of racing with 2nd place and only 0.4 seconds back. Andreas Kolb is another rider who is on it this year and takes another podium finish in third.

Check out the results below.

Who do you think will win today's racing? Will we see someone new take the top step of the podium?

Race Updates:

9:36 am PDT Mélanie Chappaz sets the first time of the day with a 5:50.072, this is over a minute off yesterday's top qualifying time.

9:38 am PDT Abigail Hogie now goes into the lead, taking just under four seconds off Mélanie's run.

9:40 am PDT Mikayla Parton goes a further two seconds up to go into the hot seat. Siel Van Der Velden was over 20 seconds in the green but must have had a crash in the fourth split.

9:41 am PDT With 10 riders left the top four are:

1st. Mikayla Parton: 5:43.884
2nd. Abigail Hogie: 5:46.190
3rd. Siel Van Der Velden: 5:47.494
4th. Mélanie Chappaz: 5:50.072

9:47 am PDT The track is looking horrible to ride as Mille Johnset slips and slides on the rocks. Despite the tricky conditions Mille goes fastest by a huge 48 second margin.

9:49 am PDT Anna Newkirk fights her way down the track to take second place so far, eight seconds back from Mille Johnset.

9:51 am PDT Jess Blewitt is having a tough run with multiple crashes. Luckily none of them are serious and she continues making it down the slippery rocks.

9:57 am PDT Monika Hrastnik goes into the lead by just over ten seconds. We are still a few seconds off the fastest qualifier from yesterday.

9:59 am PDT With 5 riders left the top four are:

1st. Monika Hrastnik: 4:45.362
2nd. Mille Johnset: 4:55.371
3rd. Veronika Widmann: 5:01.835
4th. Anna Newkirk: 5:01.835
5th. Jess Blewitt: 5:36.222

9:59 am PDT Nina Hoffmann is on an absolutely wild run! She is 10 seconds up at split 4 and if this carries on she will beat the qualifying time of Camille Balanche.

10:00 am PDT Nina goes fastest by over ten and a half seconds! An incredible run that is now the fastest Elite Women's time this week.

10:04 am PDT Eleonora Farina has a few mistakes in her run and goes into third place so far, 14 seconds back.

10:05 am PDT Vali Höll is over one and a half seconds up at split two, can she keep this to the finish?

10:08 am PDT Vali loses a lot of time to Nina Hoffmann at the bottom of the course and crosses the line in second place, just under 10 seconds behind.

10:11 am PDT Myriam Nicole goes down in the woods but she still is over four seconds up at split three.

10:12 am PDT Myriam goes into the lead by just under two seconds! With a big mistake in her run, Camille Balanche has a good chance of bettering this time if she stays upright.

10:14 am PDT There is less than half a second in it at split three. Can Camille pull this back before the finish line?

10:15 am PDT Camille is almost three seconds up at the last split!

10:15 am PDT Camille Balanche wins another World Cup by over four seconds.

Elite Men

Closing out the racing is the Men and after the Elite Women's race the course is looking very slippery. We didn't see any fully feet-up clean runs but it was important for riders to keep up momentum if they were being bucked around.

Inside the Tape:

Before we get to the last riders check the lines Ben Cathro has found out on the course.

Top Five from Qualifying:

1st. Amaury Pierron: 3:51.056
2nd. Thibaut Daprela: 3:51.914
3rd. Bernard Kerr: 3:51.966
4th. Loic Bruni: 3:52.240

11:17 am PDT After a rapid ride Dylan Levesque takes the lead by over three and a half seconds.

11:25 am PDT A massive crash for Angel Suarez! He is back up and on his bike but he won't be hurrying down the course.

11:28 am PDT Charlie Hatton flies off the bike on the double drop. Luckily he doesn't look to be injured and is quickly up on his bike.

11:34 am PDT What a run! Finn Iles makes the course look easy as he takes the lead by almost three seconds.

11:40 am PDT Aaron Gwin goes into third, 4.8 seconds back.

11:43 am PDT Laurie Greenland goes fastest by nearly half a second!

11:46 am PDT With 15 riders left the top five are:

12:00 pm PDT Danny Hart destroys the previous times as he goes over a second faster.

12:14 pm PDT On his 150th World Cup start Greg Minnaar has an incredible comeback to take the lead by just 0.352 seconds!

12:17 pm PDT Disaster for Loris Vergier! He was around four seconds up before a crash in the rocks. He gets back on the bike but he has to settle for fourth so far today.

12:21 pm PDT Andreas Kolb goes into the hot seat by 1.7 seconds. The times are really falling now.

12:22 pm PDT With five riders left the top five are:

1st. Andreas Kolb: 3:36.250
2nd. Greg Minnaar: 3:37.962
3rd. Danny Hart: 3:38.314
4th. Laurie Greenland: 3:39.603
5th. Loris Vergier: 3:39.960

12:24 pm PDT What a ride from Ronan Dunne as he goes into second place, 0.763 behind Andreas Kolb.

12:26 pm PDT Loic Bruni crashes out and with that Snowshoe will once again not see a rider take a second win here.

12:31 pm PDT A wild run for Bernard Kerr puts him in first by almost one and a half seconds! Can he take his first win in Snowshoe?

12:33 pm PDT Thibaut Daprela looks to have crashed at some point, only Amaury Pierron can stop Bernard Kerr.

12:36 pm PDT Amaury Pierron is 1.8 back at split two.

12:37 pm PDT The gap shrinks to just 0.4 seconds at the third split. This is going to be close.

12:38 pm PDT Amaury Pierron takes the lead by 0.3 seconds!

12:38 pm PDT Amaury Pierron denies Bernard Kerr his first win as he flies into the top spot.

Absolutely wounded and hyped for BK at the same time. Best WC finish, but 0.4s off a win -_-
  • 78 0
Same - I’m a huge Amaury fan, but for Bernard to be so close to his first win. :'(
  • 41 0
One reasonable mistake and one smaller one cost him the win. So fair play to Amaury for a cleaner run. Shows BK does have it in him though. Stoked to see him on the box! Faster than everyone else bar one.
  • 27 0
It's been really something to watch him get stoked as it rains, knowing everyone else was dreading it. He knew he was in his element.

I feel the same. But considering he has been stuck back around 16th the whole year second is awesome. With the 2nd place finish he now moves into the top ten overall.

Mega congratulations no Nanard Kerr. He's my new heroe, définivement!

Almost the same situation for Fearon. So close to a win and then hasn't quite stepped back up to that spot.

@Lumenous1: give ap some credit, to pull run like this after such a nasty crash in Andorra (and also top 10 run day after) is insane.

Hopefully this means momentum is building for Kerr. He is a top 5 pace when he's on proper form and now he unquestionably knows that

That reminds me of Connor Fearon's 2nd place, when Gwin decide to win with no chain..

When he was interviewed after going 2nd at Leogang (pretty sure it was there) he was holding his other daughter during the interview and he said the best thing about that week was that he had his family with him. When they interviewed him yesterday his first thoughts were of them. Danny's a special guy.

If you haven’t tried the new conti’s, I high recommend them. Been on the Kryptotal Fr/Re for about a month and they are fantastic. Work well in a wide range of conditions and durability has been great too given how sticky and grippy they are!
  • 2 0
 @norcorider-13:

And they are a bit less expensive than the competition too!
  • 1 0
@norcorider-13: i agree! Finally a better tire than maxxis!
  • 1 0
@norcorider-13: can you compare them to the magic mary?
  • 2 0
@KalkhoffKiller: I can’t, I haven’t ridden a MM in ~5 years, and that was on my 26” dh bike. But I think I like the Krytotal Fr/Re more than the assegai/dhr2. The Fr is more predictable when leaning over and does everything else at least as well. And the conti set up also rolls way faster, with comparable compounds with maxxis. There’s a forum on mtbr with more rider reviews if you’re curious!
  • 1 0
@norcorider-13: What compound and casing are you using? Looking to change my Soft Magic Mary and HansDampf comb for something softer in the front and more aggressive in the rear, was going to go MaxxGrip Assegai EXO+ and MaxxTerra DHR2 DD. Would look at the DH casing Kryptotal in super soft front and soft rear.
  • 1 0
@melonhead1145: I’m running the dh casing on both ends, super soft front and soft rear. I came off the assegai exo+ maxxgrip and dhr2 dd (maxxgrip most recently because it’s what I could get but usually run maxxterra) which I’ve been running for the last couple years. The conti’s weighed in at ~1300g in the 29x2.4 format. The casing feels thicker/stiffer than DD at about the same weight, and still has a really nicely damped feel on the trail. I honestly loved and swore by the maxxis set up for the last couple years, but the Krytotal Fr gives me more feedback in terms of when it’s gripping or sliding which is really nice.

  • 7 1
@Lagr1980: As much as I would've loved to see Bernard take his first win, I think holding back for that in this context is somewhat wrong. I'd rather take an honest to god, 0.4s off one of the greatest riders in history than a fake win
  • 3 0
@IsaacWislon82: I agree.. just thought he would have tone it down not to risk himself knowing his close competitors were not a threat... ; ).. its perhaps last chance of BK.... although this is a mental game, and bernie is on a roll... hope he gets redemption this year !!

Amaury is now more than 400 points up on 2nd place in the overall and he only needs a 250 point gap to lock in the title. I can’t remember the last male DH rider to do that. Rachel obviously did it during her streak. Maybe Gwin?
  • 5 1
@tbmaddux: Amaury did it in 2018, he locked the title at MSA with LaBresse still to come. He only had to end up ahead of Loris. History's repeating itself.

 Men's points standings after Snowshoe:

- Pierron - 1180
- Vergier - 758
- Iles - 746
- Hart - 624
- Kolb - 591

Looks like the only race is for 2nd place overall. What a year for Amaury.
  • 4 0
He has been basically unstoppable so far. All he's really got to do is show up at the last few, but that's folks were saying going into this weekend...
  • 10 0
@WaterBear: oh there is footage of a tree stopping him real good in Andorra, how he is riding at these speeds after such a huge crash is insane!
  • 4 0
Amaury has a 422-point lead. The most in one race possible is 250, so he only needs to get 79 in MSA to have an absolute lock on the overall even if Loris comes first in qualifying and finals in both MSA and VdS. A top-9 finish in MSA will be enough, even if he gets no points in qualifying. Or, looking at it another way, he only needs to do a little worse than his worst result of this season.

  • 5 0
No idea but he was over 4 seconds up on split 3. Must have crashed and lost over 25seconds
  • 12 10
4 seconds up at split 3 indicates there is probably a lot more speed to be gotten out of the track, which a few of the elites will probably find. Due to the start order, I'm guessing Jackson already knew that Jordan lost time, and from that had a good idea about what type of run he needed to put down without overcooking it. If that assumption is correct, that's just elite level race management by Jackson to effectively race the other riders and balance risks versus results.

@korev: it is excruciating at times to listen to her commentate. I do think it's good and proper to have a women in the commentary booth, but listen to how much Elliot has progressed in the time he's been doing it. And Tracey just hasn't. Its not great.

Im stoked for the riders on the podium!! Love seeing younger/different faces on at the top. And good for the GOAT finishing so well

Happy for Pinkerton go get his best WC finish on home soil.
  • 12 0
He’s down like a homesick mole! Damn, I’m gonna miss Rob
  • 10 0
Even if a regular winner won again i could never complain. What a race! Tons of lead changes and wonderful to see kerr on the podium.
  • 12 0
 Yes Ronan!!! Insane.
  • 8 0
Credit to commencal. They have gone after racing, constantly evolved their bikes and have stayed committed. Multiple top tens every race for the last few years.

Just get rid of pf bb’s already!
  • 6 0
P2 for Aimi! Assuming the cutoffs for junior are determined by calendar years is she looking like the early favourite for the junior womens overall next season? I note all the girls ahead of her this year are born the year earlier.
  • 2 0
Actually, I’m getting a bit carried away. The top four coming into this race were born in 2004, but 5, 6 & 7 (Aimi) were all born in 2005.

Third place in the boys to a Colombian who presumably hasn’t been racing in Europe judging by his plate number.

Tegan Cruz with a solid performance too! Canada 1-2 in junior men. Very solid performances coming from the Canadians lately in all levels!
  • 5 0
Seemed that way with Finn too but somehow the French just step it up.
  • 9 0
Holy shit Camille Balanc(h)es run was wild
  • 6 0
When it's wet, I always wonder where the hell she gets all the grip from
  • 2 0
@korev: she is one my favourite, and I think one of the best, riders to watch men or women, when it's wet, wild and muddy. The woods at Leogang being the obvious example too. She has this strange mixed of control and wildness, which I know doesn't make sense really
  • 8 0
 Pierron is such a machine!!!
  • 7 0
Tegan Cruz on fire: 2 podiums in the last 2 races. Watch for him and Bodhi Kuhn next year.
  • 5 0
Dang. The first time had aumary off my fantasy team all year. Should have know better. He was looking rough in pre race interviews. Figured I’d give him one more week to recover. Never doubt that man.
  • 2 0
Same, took him out, luckily i put Bernard instead lmao
  • 6 0
Fingers crossed for Jess Blewitt. Hoping she can put last year behind her and have a great race.

  • 23 0
Emilie Siegenthaler, I think. She's Cami's partner as far as I know.
  • 11 0
Yes. Emille Siegenthaler (I think I just butchered her name spelling). Used to race for Pivot until retiring last year, but is still part of the Pivot team
  • 7 0
Yes, that is her partner. They do a podcast together called the In & Out podcast

Emile also Bernard Kerr to one side whilst Perron was celebrating, she works for the Pivot team, I’d imagine just to get him to compose himself. So close yet so far.
  • 4 0
@cypher74: noticed that too! Gutted for BK, but nice to see what a solid crew Pivot are, looking out for each other.
  • 8 2
Wow, where is the crowd? The finish corral looks very empty.
  • 12 0
At Snowshoe the organizers limit the finish corral to team members and people with a VIP pass. The general public can't really see anything other than the big display screen. It kinda sucks, but at the same time, the entire area is fairly tight and there isn't a lot of space. I love to watch the race from the finish line corral and this is honestly one of the reasons I didn't go this year (I attended in 2019 and 2021).
  • 1 0
 I was thinking the same
  • 3 0
@IanJF: watching at the track’s key sections is a nice consolation prize though
  • 1 0
Snowshoe is an unusual mountain in that its “village” is at the summit, so the vast majority of people are still at the top. Spectators who can handle a descent on foot will make their way down the mountain, lining the track along the way. I got to the bottom just in time for Pierron’s finish and there were tons of people down there but they were mostly on the slope above the corral. It’s a loooong wait (2+ hours) to get on the lift back to the village so we opted to hike a bit further and wait an hour for the shuttle back to the top.
  • 1 0
@snokat: I didn't know that. Was it possible to walk up the hill? This is possible in say Lenzerheide or La Bresse.
  • 1 0
@korev: Yes, but people wouldn’t be at the bottom unless they already hiked down, or downloaded on the lift. I did see a few people who rode the lift down and opted to hike back uphill.
  • 5 0
How did Widman not get a DQ? I presume that they will update the results list?
  • 1 0
I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to ride over the pole, but not around it. Widman was over the base of the pole, but didn’t go around the top of it.
  • 4 1
@coolbeans1235: ok but she also went through the tape, and re- entered lower down. Isn’t that what tahnne got dq ‘d for in leogang a few years ago?
  • 1 0
@peytodog: I guess I would have to see them side by side and I’m certainly not an expert. Whatever the rule is I would hope they enforce it consistently
  • 6 0
Yes Bernie! Its all come together
  • 6 0
I hope Angel and Loïc are ok. Both of those hits did not look good.
  • 3 0
What an amazing season this has been so far, best in years! Love the unpredictable racing and the variety of riders featuring at the sharp end. That's what it's all about. My fantasy team has been lacking though haha!
  • 3 0
Huh? Why would Amaury just let someone else win? First of all he has know way of knowing where he stands while racing and secondly we all saw how much a win means to these guys. Nice job!
  • 7 2
FUCK!! Loris had it in the bag
  • 9 4

Yeah gutted Bernard didn't take the win , was screaming at the TV those last few runs . I see him regularly in Haslemere near my work , would have been insane to see him take the win , hopefully give him the boost he needs to get the top spot next time
  • 5 0
 Huge run from Finn!
  • 6 1
Finn's run was insane, especially considering how much wetter the track was vs the last couple men
  • 1 1
Wasn’t any drier in the shade, just shows how much better the top qualifiers are on a wet track @IsaacWislon82:
  • 2 0
@flyingfox49: Good thing half the track is in the sun. Both Fort William and Leogang results this year do not support your hypothesis
  • 1 0
Yeah sure, like Finn always looks fastest but he isn’t , and Bruni usually doesn’t look fast but he usually is ( most times )@IsaacWislon82:
  • 6 1
 Bloody hell Minaaaaaar!
  • 4 0
Amaury... Invincible... That race was so weird
  • 5 0

 minnaar is the GOAT

 Gwin will catch the goat
  • 3 0
I've been following dh racing for about 6 years. That was the best racing I've seen. Gutted for Kerr but well done Pieron.
  • 2 1
Well, sometimes quali does matter. The track was by far the fastest for the top qualifiers. Just based on appearance and riding style, I might say that Finn would had won if he had been one of the last guys.
  • 1 0
5 different nations in the top 5 for Elite Women's, Elite Men's and Junior Women's. How cool is that!?!

Also for a change, nice to *only* see 3 Frenchmen in the top 10 for the Elite Men's lol. They are so dominant!
  • 4 1
Somebody get Elliot a phone book.

 Nooooo Loris Frown

Too bad about Vergier, I already had it.
  • 3 0
 Yeah Jackson!!!
  • 4 6
His time is faster than Pierron’s qualifier yesterday - that boy can fly, I know it’s different conditions today but not many of the Elite men will get down to Goldstone’s time.
Does he have a ride in the elite class next year?!
  • 5 1
I'd assume he'll have plenty of options. Wouldn't be surprised if he sticks w/ the Syndicate.

It’s funny I’m here and all the fans are like “wait until you see the pros come through how much faster they are”. I politely said “you want see anyone come through here faster than that today” and walked away.

 @swellhunter: and they all clapped

Look at Jordan's splits...was destroying Goldstone until he went down.
  • 13 0
@LaXcarp: well, Goldstone didn't went down.
  • 3 2
 @projan: Ya dont say?
  • 3 1
@LaXcarp: because Jackson's widening his overall lead and Jordan's getting desperate and pushing too hard. Being up on a few splits means nothing if he can't keep it rubber side down.
  • 9 0
@swellhunter: Got that one just a bit wrong then.
  • 6 1

Did the start times get delayed? On Redbull TV it says the women start at 9:25 and the men at 10:45?
  • 3 0
No, I had my time zone conversions wrong. I have updated our timings now.

 @edspratt: cheers

Are the Junior Women on a different course ?
Huge time difference between junior and elite compared to most of the races.
  • 1 0
 Same course.
  • 4 1
Same course but it’s been raining 3 days straight but by this afternoon it was sunny so it was drying out quickly for the mens. Juniors raced in the morning when it was still soaked
  • 2 0
Conditions changed massively throughout the day. A great anecdote is Goldstone's time vs the Elite Men, he is usually in touch with the top 20 or so but was way behind due to a wetter track
  • 1 0
Early starters in men's race: Leader already posted a 3:52.5.
Would have been 5th fastest quali time yesterday.
  • 2 0
 3:46 now
The track must have dried out
  • 1 0
What on earth happened to Bruni? Was it a puncture or did the brake caliper blow up??
  • 7 1
Smashed the lever into the ground, no doubt burst the master cylinder piston seal... equals no brake

British guy can ride a bike in the mud. Total shocker.

  • 1 1
Curious to know about changing track conditions, looks like it dried out towards the end (?)
  • 3 1
 Is that somehow a question?
  • 1 1
@nateb: at what point did it dry out , don’t think the answer is that simple , doesn’t immediately go from completely wet to dry when elites go on course.
  • 2 6
flag nateb FL (Jul 30, 2022 at 19:20) (Below Threshold)
Yah no shit… it’s almost like it slowly dried out as the day went on? Ugh… never mind.
  • 1 0
@nateb: yeah the answer is as clear as mud! ( Just was responding to all the stupid remarks about how the track was sooo much better when all the elites went down and didn’t see what it was like when juniors went cuz not televised so all pretty much a moot point )
  • 1 0
can anyone explain why Veronica wasn't Dq'd?
