Final Results from the Snowshoe XC World Cup 2021

The women start their charge through the streets of Snowshoe.

The results are in from the final XC World Cup of 2021. In the U23 racing, there was another big win for Mona Mitterwallner as she continues to be in a league of her own. Martin Vidaurre Kossmann took the top spot for the U23 Men as he rode ahead of Simone Avondetto by 11 seconds.

Evie Richards once again proved why she is the XC World Champion as she dominated the Elite Women's field and took the win in Snowshoe by one and a half minutes. This is her third big win in a row after taking the rainbow jersey and then winning in Lenzerheide. Evie Richards has also completed a perfect weekend as she also won Friday's XCC Short Track race. Rebecca McConnell was the only rider who looked like she could beat Evie today, but a front flat in the first laps took her out of contention for the win. Rebecca fought back and still took a well deserved second place.

A historic day in the Elite Men's race as Christopher Blevins takes his first Elite win and the first US Elite male XC World Cup winner since 1994. Vlad Dascalu also managed to take his best results with a second place, nine seconds back. Ondrej Cink completes the top three after a dramatic final lap that saw punctures from Nino Schurter and Henrique Avancini.

Perfect attack. Thanks to R Warner for not being dismissive about Chris during the race. CB gave a great interview too. Durango will be buzzin' on this - very stoked! Another well earned victory - congrats!
  • 6 1
@CarlMega: Why would he be dismissive? Blevins is XCC world champ.
  • 2 1
I love xc racing and this was one of the best in the men's category today.

One thing though, what's with the podium placers being presented with a bouquet of flowers instead of a trophy?

Standing on the podium in XCO is unbelievably hard and an amazing achievement, something very few people at this elite level ever get to do, and not to be given a permanent momento for your trophy cabinet seems a bit hollow.

@mtb1101: Don't I know it. Felt like Rob was talking up the possibility but Bart Brentjens was being a poopy pants at the party.
  • 1 0
@CarlMega: There was a tiny bit of steeki murrde on the course.
  • 9 0
@mtb1101: Bart kept drawing commentary back to Nino (fair enough, he was leading until overtaken by Blevins and front flat) and Avancini, even when Blevins was about to enter the finish he was talking about them. Rob did an awesome job bringing focus back to where it should be and calling the finish.

Tremendous performance and last lap by Blevins, inspired interview after the win too, hats off.

Catherine Pendrel finishing up in style - 15th on the day!
  • 4 0
Ya that is really crazy impressive! If not, the most impressive performance, it’s certainly up there!
  • 6 0
She has been ridiculously consistent. I think she'd be a great coach/mentor for some of the younger ladies.
  • 5 0
Imagine being able to be in the elite physical shape/fitness to be top 15 in world cup XCO at age 40. For me it's as impressive as Greg in DH (yes, Greg has better results, but in my opinion age impacts the fitness required for XC/road more than skills required for DH).

 Catherine Pendrel is my hero!

Evie Richards, the one and only World Champion.

 True that!

2022 is gonna be brutal. Evie, Loana and Moana among the young guns, Jolanda, Pauline, and Jenny representing the vets.
  • 4 0
Evie looks awesome on the bike! Always has the outside pedal down in the corners weight inside steering with the hip. Posture on the bike reminds me of Tomac in his wc xc glory days

I remember when American males never won any world cups and the Canadian Kirk Molday came into the scene and in Mountain Bike Action they would always have his picture after a World Cup where he would podium and have the caption “Top North American.” I guess we had to take our small victories how we could back then.
  • 9 0
Havent heard that name in a minute. He def was a crusher.
PB should do a "where are they now" article
  • 2 0
I still rock my Kirk Molday jersery with the cutoff sleeves!

Evie riding like a freight train today! Amazing to hear she was holding something back due to not hearing the splits.
  • 13 1
Blevins timed that perfectly. Great race!

What an amazing race! Please more corses like this where we get close racing with tactics also being part of the game.

Koretzky wheeling with a front flat and Avancini crossing the finish line on the rim. A race to remember!
  • 1 0
depo was before start line or after? Idk if he had flat or not when he was doing whelie
  • 3 0
@Eddyjunior: I belive the tech zone was a few turns and bridges after the start/finish area. He was doing a wheelie on the cobble stones through the start/finish area on his way to the tech zone. It happened somewhere mid race.
  • 10 1
The hound barking in the background of Rob and Bart's commentary is pleasing.
  • 8 0
Dude, this! That damn dog was barking all day long.
  • 2 0
I think it was a police K9 in a cruiser.
  • 3 1
@extratalldirtrider: man, I love dogs but that was terrible
  • 6 0
After rewatching the ending it appears like Nino's front tire was already flat when Blevins made the winning move around the switchback. Blevins and Dascalu must have seen the flat and knew it was the time to go. So many flats, I don't think riders were prepared for how brutal the rocks were.
  • 3 0
Lots of Shale & Slate in that area. It tends to have very sharp edges because if the way it naturally cleaves.
  • 6 0
Yes, Nino let them pass since his race was more or less over.
  • 3 0
That's what I thought too. Nino was too easy to pass.

Move over, Tinker! I rarely pay attention to Men's XCO but dang that was pretty exciting racing! And congrats to Evie!

I wonder if Red Bull/Trek could get Evie Richards to do a video or two of her trying DH? Have a lovely day with Reece Wilson/Vali Höll or maybe Rachel Atherton to show her around Dyfi.
  • 6 1
Anyone know what happened to Kate Courtney? Did she blow up or something? The heat maybe?
  • 2 1
Rob mentioned her pulling out. I don't know if he gave details.
  • 6 1
If I had to guess, lingering effects from Friday's crash.
  • 3 1
Rough year for her, with the crashes, injury, etc. Let’s hope she’ll be back to full strength next year
  • 1 0
@mtb1101: ah, good point. I forgot about her recent crash.
  • 4 0
Does anyone know the elevation of one lap is?

Some of the climbs look steep af~
  • 3 0
Short steep climb with almost all riders dismounting.
  • 5 0
2.4 mile (3.9km) lap, 610 feet (186 meter) per lap elevation.
  • 3 0
I should have mentioned the 2021 course is steeper than the 2019 course. The 2019 course had less climbing (528 feet) over a longer lap (2.6 miles).
  • 3 0
@Jamminator: 16.8 miles with a total elevation of 4,270ft going full gas

these guys are absolute machines!
  • 2 0
Evie Richards is definitely the favourite going into the first CX World Cups in America. Not sure if she plans on racing all three but gotta think she will be at the Trek World Cup. Going to be tough to beat
  • 3 0
Worth watching the replay of the last lap of men’s even if you don’t follow XC (I don’t). Ridiculous fitness and skills on display.
  • 2 0
I'm wondering what was the reason of that so many (mostly front) flats. Does anyone know if there was something particular somewhere on the track to get a front slow flat? That seems quite unusual.
  • 2 1
Congrats to Blevins for the valiant effort, it was a well deserved victory. Although I don't think he would have taken it if all the top competitors wouldn't have suffered flats. With Schurter, Flückiger, Avancini and Koretzky still in the race, the sprint for the finish line would have been a much closer battle. Anyways, that's just racing and I always love to see an underdog take the win.
  • 3 0
I think Blevins rode it smart and never got stressed. Nino risked too much by riding fast and making gaps down the rocky part.
  • 12 8
Feel bad for Nino. So close to 33.
  • 23 1
Meh. Let us finally have 1.
  • 10 2
@extratalldirtrider: Blevins earned it all the way. That overtake was money!

Don’t mind who wins, but please not with a shitty roadie-way win.
  • 5 0
@mtb1101: agreed. I meant let us enjoy this long awaited victory. It’s been since 1994!
  • 5 0
@pinkknip: all of these elite riders train on the road.
  • 12 1
@pinkknip: uh how was that a roadie win? He was w the lead group the whole race, positioned well, attacked and stayed away after navigating through all the tech w best guys. Avoided Avancini when he went down and passed Nino inside on a steep singletrack switchback? Not to mention he’s one of the best bike handlers in XC, former Natl BMX champ too I think
  • 2 0
@MP-mtb: here here... put some respect on Blevins name.
  • 1 4
@MP-mtb: You are right…and he never took the lead to save energy, as he confirmed afterwards. That’s the roadie part to me.
Schurter could have been smarter.
  • 3 3
 @pinkknip:

Such an absolute crap thing to say.

Tactics matter - and Blevins played it perfectly. “Roadie”… I’d wager 90%+ of the men’s XC field not only trains on the road, but at least occasionally races there too. At the speeds they were going in Snowshoe, pack dynamics and drafting are going to play a role. On a course with longer, steadier climbs – probably not quite as much. That being said, would you rather see someone ride like Cink - always the “fastest” guy in the middle of the race (when it doesn’t freaking matter), doing a ton of work, yet never winning a WC despite being acknowledged as one of the world’s best climbers?
  • 4 0
@tommyrod74: Why on earth would you hate on Cink? If anyone deserves a win, it’s him! You have to play your cards right. Cink played his, Blevins his, and I belive also Nino played his cards right but got unlucky. This time it went Blevins way. Hopefully sometime soon it will go Cink’s way.

Nino have played a lot of road tactics himself through the years. Sitting on the wheel for the first 6 laps and then attack on the last lap.
  • 3 0
@MP-mtb: How many times in the past have we seen Jenny R. play the stalking tiger only to pounce in the last couple laps? Answer, Lots.

Tactics, it's not just for the Road.
