Loic Bruni is one second back heading into the woods, will he pull this back before the finish line?
7:39 am PDT:
Loic Bruni goes down and Reece Wilson is your new World Champion!
They raced a dh track, with some mud on it.
Interestingly the racers from countries where it gets wet and muddy faired better than they normally do on wide open grass field, which they are not used too. Those that ride motocross in the wet... faired better too.
So they raced conditions that favored then rather than an alpine summer which they haven't ridden since wee boys.
Scotland won a freakin world cup on a nice summer's day back home. Awesome.
People race in stuff like this (anyone remember the NPS at Ruggog a few years bacK).
It's not all about riding the same venues in the same conditions every year, turn up and race what's in front of you in the conditions on the day should be what downhill racing is about.
PS I disagree with Azonicds statement above about lottery being an excuse...
Not sure some folk know how a lottery works.
There is no skill in picking some random numbers that match a screen.
There is masses of skill in picking the right lines and executing riding them better than anyone else. Tyre choice, pressures, bike setup etc. Reece has raced a good few SDA's, some in the wet, many in tbe dry. Look where he was on Cathros video compared to Greg and Ben before making a mistake (those boys were trying that day for sure). Nobody can take this away from Reece, he won in the woods on what Gwin said was the hardest track he had ever ridden.
On the other hand, it easily becomes a lottery if conditions change during the race runs, because than suddenly a lot will depend on the starting position, not on skill alone.
And most times, when it’s as wet as yesterday, conditions change quite a bit. When Bruni entered the track, some parts of it where really destroyed, some ruts were very deep and couldn’t be avoided anymore...
In the end it’s still about bringing down a race run without mistakes in conditions most of us wouldn’t be able to complete the first 20 meters without going down, and Reece Wilson did that, going much faster also than the people starting immediately before and after him.
But would he also have won if he has gone last? I doubt it very much.
Many other riders slid off in the forest section because they were not good enough. Reece was. Reece won because he was the best rider on that track today. End of discussion.
The comments on this have really highlighted how many people think MTB stops when the bike parks close.
But everyone else made mistakes so legit win for sure!
I fail to see how there's any other way of looking at it. He was one of the only guys with enough skill to actually ride the track rather than slide down it on his ass. Say what you want about how they should have changed the track to suit the conditions, he was the best rider that day, and nobody can take that away from him.
I think we're in agreement here. The weather and track conditions for sure are a lottery. The race results absolutely are not - it takes a mud wizard like Danny or Reece to win a race like this.
Could have.
That said, I don't give a crap about the whole nationalist ego surrounding sports. Especially in DH racing, how much do the national sports federations even contribute to these athletes? To me it is largely the teams and sometimes personal energy drink supplier who contribute most. Not always, I know. I recall back when she was competing in WC 4X, Anneke Beerten was training with the national BMX team and could use the olympic training facilties. But I thought that was largely because the head coach was an ex team mate (Bas de Bever). Joost Wichman (another4X world champ from the same country) never got that treatment. Aside from France, do World Championship gravity mtb athletes in other countries get any considerable support from their national sports federation? If not, seems like there is little reason to go all 'murrica-like about it. Cheer for whoever you want to cheer for. You see in other sports where people cheer primarily for which country someone is from and I don't see it do any good.
So yeah, please keep this shit at bay. Sure feel proud if you're feeling it, but if Rob is genuinely stoked for anyone regardless of where that rider comes from, that is great in its own right and doesn't need anything to balance it out.
Scotland is a wonderful country full of some the nicest people I have ever met. They are also very proud of where they come from and rightfully so.
I see no reason why Scottish Riders shouldn't be allowed to race under their flag as they have some amazing athletes that I guarantee you would proudly rep the Blue and White at world champs.
At this time I'm just happy for the young lad laying down a wicked run and taking Gold.
But man I would love to see in the future the blue and white for those who bleed it.
I think you need to spend some time thinking about those living in countries that have to show up and race under some other flag just cause back in the day there was a king and queen that people gave a shit about... Well some gave a shit about haha
Another one for you while I'm on the subject: "Chinese Taipei". A case of outdated politics turned present day political ambiguity.
@jaame: Yeah, I'm aware of this too. But I hate the olympics (because of even more nationalism and nations' pride over athletes' backs). Either way, yeah I don't get why sometimes it seems like they mean to say UK and then say GB. Don't mean to go too deep into politics but with the whole Brexit issue I initially thought "just leave with GB then and leave Northern Ireland with the Irish" but well, apparently they did want more of an UKxit. That said, I'm not sure about the Welsh but I recall the Scottish didn't want to leave EU either. So let's just keep it a Englaxit and call it a day
But back to (what I'd call) on topic, let people just cheer for whoever they want to cheer for, regardless of where they come from.
It has (some of) its own money.
It has a government, kind of.
It does not have a separate head of state.
It does not issue passports. It does not have its own distinct military or a seat at the UN.
It has a strong national identity.
I think the majority of Scots would say "Scottish" when asked their nationality, but they voted to stay as part of the UK by a small margin.
I always found it interesting in surfing that there are surfers representing "USA" and "HAW" where perhaps in other sports there is no Hawaiian nationality.
As for your name popping up here, it still does! I recently asked why you weren't racing slalom at the Strait Acres a few weeks ago and Rachel commented that you were concussed. So that was a bummer but more than anything, I hope your healing up properly!
@TheBearDen: Yup, feel free to not read if don't want to.
@jclnv: you on the other hand... Shouldn't you be out looking for underground adrenochrome farms?
I will always try to focus on the positives in any given situation, even when the pessimistic among us will tell us there are none. For example, the blue passport. I prefer the colour to bergundy. That's a plus, however small. Feeling positive aboit a change in passport colour is a lot better for my health than feeling negative about all the shit associated with Brexit. I don't get to control either. Being in a post-Brexit UK is still better than living in 80% of the other countries in the world so what has everyone got to moan about really? As I tell my kids on a regular basis - kids their age in the Philippines are rummaging through garbage dumps looking for scrap metal to sell. Kids their age in Africa are already working as soldiers in tin pot armies. Kids the age of my daughter in the middle East are already married to men four times their age and expecting kids. I could go on.
Brexit isn't worth the coverage it gets. We live, we die. It's up to us to make the most of what happens in between on a personal level. That's why I ride bikes, lift weights, have sex, play football and go on holiday. They are the things I enjoy. And commentimg on Pinkbile. That's fun too.
Malum consilium quod mutari non potest. Cui bono?
I'm great fun at parties.
Also amazing to see how things reshuffle when the conditions and tracks don’t favour people from hot countries.
So pleased for Reece. Has looked class all week. Knew that the conditions suited him and showed that it categorically wasn’t a lottery!
I think the track was not suited for the late season at all.
If almost every rider crashes, it is not a race. Downhill is about finding small margins!
And think about all the juniors having to ride the same track early morning :-S
People complained about the bog in Fort William two years ago and now at Leogang, the whole lower wood section was a bog and steep. So if many of the top riders struggle, the track is not appropriate in my opinion.
Of course it takes an insane amount of skill to make it down in these conditions but you can't deny that a muddy sloppy track adds a ton a variability to the results. Race this 10 times and there will be 10 different winners.
And i will add that champery, when Hart did win was a muddy sloppy track and proper downhill, this one was a muddy pond track.
Your point about variability of results doesn't make any sense either, do you want to see the same guys win every week? Also what if they did run races like this and the same guys got on the podium every time, what would you think then?
If that’s not ‘proper mountain biking’ then why is mountain biking booming in the UK. These are the conditions that we ride from October to April every year (some years that is our summer too). Scotland riding is muddy, rooty, steep and technical -including the Tweed Valley where Reece grew up riding. Other countries never experience that as they transition from dry hardpack to ski season (Bruni, Gwin, Pirron). It’s therefore no shock that someone who has come up riding these conditions excelled.
Variety is actually fair as it allows people who specialise in these conditions a chance to show their skills as opposed to the norm where the key skills are flat out on grippy tracks.
If anything it shows how capable some riders are but that they’re generally handicapped by the one dimensional tracks that have become the norm.

As the WC races are only about to start, we can expect more muddy conditions this northern hemisphere so if you've proven to be able to do well here, chances are you'll do well at the World Cups too this year.
REDBULL SORT IT OUT!
I've got VPN through work so I'm good. But it sucks to see business get in the way of sports.
For me it as always been flawless when using without a vpn, I sometimes get some quality drops for a few seconds when using a vpn but that is not something redbull can do about it.
Dank userer SERAFE Gebühren haben Sie etwas gekauft was gratis hätten haben können
For the last time. I do not need a VPN.
I really thought Troy was going to have it. So so close.
Brook you are my hero. I honestly was having a hard time watching, was so nervous.
Thank you Pinkbike for introducing me to Opera (VPN enabled free browser).
I so love MTB DH.
Let's see how the top riders handle this...Wyn said on IG that you can get through and it's not as bad as he thought
On the other hand, this namibian woman might never get out of that mud again :/
Mud Carnage... brilliant
works for me in GER
Rob: for once!
It'll settle there soon...It's getting colder :o
-Not everyone in England voted for BREXIT. Nearly half didnt.
-Everyone forgets Reece spent a lot of time in the hotseat at Fort Bill a few years back...in the dry
-The results for the Brits (and specifically the Scottish) were excellent. Because these are the conditions they have to ride in. Junior mens says it all with 6 from GB or IRl in the top 10.
-It was a race, just a different one. Those who got down clean weren't lucky, that does them a massive disservice. They were the most skilled in the conditions on the day. That's racing.
-There are a lot of Brits who are happy to celebrate the union and cheer on the Scottish. Sporting rivalry within the union is an important part of national identity. I was as pleased as an Englishman to see the first Scottish champ as I was to see GBR win. It does not have to be either or.
-Id be pleased for Reece and the others in the top 10 of each area regardless of nationality. Getting down that course in a good time is an awesome achievement.
Seems there is a sad fact of human nature that we have to find ways to diminish peoples achievements. Lets not do that, lets just celebrate the amazing individuals who did battle on that hill.
Therions run was wild too, was stoked to see that!
Personally thought that was a awesome race, I want to see the worlds best nail conditions I wouldn't even dream of attempting and thats what we got today! Brilliant watching!
Such a great US family - they have done so much for US mountain biking.
The "Red Bull Lockout" (or "geo restriction" as it was called) was not worthy of this event. Shame on anyone who was responsible for this garbage!!
This is the link
I’d rather watch Rob Warner coverage than BBC Sport commentators ????
Wtfffffff
What’s funny, I have a VPN to my “home” Slovakia and the live-stream works on an Ipad with their app but does not work on a PC (with VPN), still telling me it’s geo-blocked. It’s piece of cr@p..
The only stream that works for me on a laptop streaming to Apple TV. the Redbull apps on phone and Apple TV both don't work at all. f*cking disgrace.
BBC stream is absolute dog shite (great video quality but shit talk).
I don't f*cking have to you muppet, the UK is not geo blocked.
Also no need to be a dick to @neimbc
Go and watch it again and tell me where you think it was like cyclo-cross please.
I don't recall anyone calling for Danny Harts 2011 champs to be nullified because Gee and Greg all were made to look like fools by the atrocious conditions. Watch Gees run in 2011 and tell me those conditions were better than yesterday...
IMO there should be within reason a point for postponement; whereas, safety and environment are first and foremost.
1: because schedules exist and there's a lot dependant on it going ahead.
2: the weather trend is going to continue in the same direction. It is an alpine resort after all and it's autumn, not spring.
3: they're riding mountain bikes, not timetrial or velodrome bikes.
I would say that the managers of such facilities are well practiced in both maintenance and remediation. I doubt there will be any long term damage from running this event.
Its kinda like saying, "we realize the snow pack is very unstable at the moment but were gonna let the skiers and boarders drop in regardless, because there is too much invested".
There are a host of events in the wide world of sports that follow this rule. It is the ethical thing to do.
They won because they are the best in these conditions.
congratulation to the winners, good riding and well deserved, but this chamionship was a bloody joke, should have been canceled due to the wheater conditions, winner by luck is no fun and does not reflect the athlets ability.
There was no competition, just lottery
I don't know if you've ever tried to ride in this kind of conditions but it's bloody hard. It takes something special just to be able to ride well, never mind race.
Luck has very little to do with it, more like extra concentration and experience to know when to push and when to back off.
I asked to not give me wrong, but you just misunderstood me
May i should not write in a language thats not my mothertongue
