Greg Williamson is giving a masterclass in riding the woods but he is still losing time to Reece Wilson. Wilson must have done something really special.

First-year Elite rider Thibaut Daprela is in the green as he heads into the woods. Can he keep this up to the bottom?

Mark Wallace cleans the wood section but it isn't good enough to beat Wilson and he goes 6.655 seconds back and into third.

7:14 am PDT:

Two crashes for Brook MacDonald at the top of the course. He still keeps going and now he is riding without a glove.

7:18 am PDT:

David Trummer has an amazing ride through the woods and is only two seconds back at the fourth split.

7:19 am PDT:

Trummer goes into second place! Next up is the fastest qualifier Loris Vergier.

7:21 am PDT:

Loris manages to save himself from a huge crash in the tree stumps. This will have cost a lot of time but there is still the woods to come.

7:23 am PDT:

Loris Vergier loses a lot of time in the woods and finishes in ninth place and ten seconds back.

7:28 am PDT:

Greg Minnaar has a massive crash through the tree stumps!

7:32 am PDT:

Danny Hart is only three seconds back at the split before the woods. Can he close in on Wilson's time in the steep woods?

7:33 am PDT:

Hart goes off line and into some deep and thick mud which kills all of his speed.

7:35 am PDT:

Troy Brosnan was in the green going into the woods but goes down on the entrance to the tricky section. Only Loic Bruni can stop Reece Wilson.

7:39 am PDT:

Loic Bruni is one second back heading into the woods, will he pull this back before the finish line?

7:39 am PDT:

Loic Bruni goes down and Reece Wilson is your new World Champion!

Saying it's a lottery just because conditions don't suit you is like throwing shit on the podium guys, so basically if you only can ride ride dry and damp courses it's also a lottery if you win then, of course you need a bit of luck in racing, but those on the podium today did amazing runs in that slop, stoked for Reece, can handle it all! Respect!

I think the lottery references are more toward the differing track conditions between riders, not speaking to anyone's skill or a mythical lottery of staying upright. Every single rider after Wilson lost 2-3 seconds on that lower-middle sector, irregardless of what happened above or below, even if they stayed upright. At the end of the day luck is only a small part including skill, and Wilson no doubt had both.
  • 21 6
@Jamminator: maybe he shat himself because he was going so fast and everyone that came after ended up slipping in it
  • 90 4
 @Jamminator:
They raced a dh track, with some mud on it.
Interestingly the racers from countries where it gets wet and muddy faired better than they normally do on wide open grass field, which they are not used too. Those that ride motocross in the wet... faired better too.

So they raced conditions that favored then rather than an alpine summer which they haven't ridden since wee boys.

Scotland won a freakin world cup on a nice summer's day back home. Awesome.

@betsie: @betsie: 100% this. Am stoked for him. People will talk it down but at the end of the day that was the track and the conditions. People been moaning WC racing has become too predictable / boring, then we have something different and people moan. Which one is it?

People race in stuff like this (anyone remember the NPS at Ruggog a few years bacK).
  • 5 0
@usmbc-co-uk: Rugog was more than a few years ago haha. But yes similar conditions, had one of my best results there. I think Rob Warner did fairly well that day. He always schooled when the conditions got nasty and tech.

Congrats to Reece! To be fair though, his time was six seconds slower than the best qualification time of Loris Vergier. It was a lottery, because many great riders just slid off in the forest section no matter how hard they tried.
  • 44 0
@martin737: I don't think you can make comparisons between qualification times and race day. The conditions changed significantly. What you can say is that today Reece set the fastest time of the day, and today was the day the final was.
  • 16 0
@martin737: Conditions today looked significantly worse than the quali day, including up the top. Thoroughly deserved win on the day (and by all accounts all week) from Reece, nobody else handled the track and conditions as well.

It's not all about riding the same venues in the same conditions every year, turn up and race what's in front of you in the conditions on the day should be what downhill racing is about.
  • 13 6
@petrospit: and gwin was on pace to contend with him but crashed. It was obvious from the practice videos some of these guys just don't ride wet conditions and they really should.. lol

True, but deteriorating track conditions shouldn’t also have such a large part in determining the World Champs.
  • 6 0
@RabWardell: Reece was on for a fast time in qualies too but for that mistake up top. Others were on for a fast time on race day and made mistakes at the bottom. That's racing, can't make mistakes at the top of the sport. Also at World's qualies don't mean the same, hard to know how hard folks are trying.
  • 9 0
One thing's for sure, he Scottish stereotyped the shit of this wet, cold, filthy race. I remember riding in the Highlands on the 1st of June about 20 years ago and the weather was worse than this. Lottery or inevitably?
  • 10 0
@martin737: congrats to Reece. He obviously had more skills handling the quagmire of a course that every other rider also had to deal with today. I mean he was the best rider on this course on this day, nothing more, don't make it any less.

  • 2 5
@lifeofloon: I reacted to Azonicds comment about tricky conditions being used as an excuse by other riders. It was a lottery and in order to win a lottery you need to have skills, take risks and have luck. Reece pulled this off and won.
  • 13 0
So true. It was a real technical DH race with all the drama. No lottery at all. If some guys can‘t ride mud as well as Reece: now they know what to train. And the race was not only decided in the mud section, only a well rounded rider could win.
  • 25 0
 @ingotaraske: agreed.
Not sure some folk know how a lottery works.
There is no skill in picking some random numbers that match a screen.
There is masses of skill in picking the right lines and executing riding them better than anyone else. Tyre choice, pressures, bike setup etc. Reece has raced a good few SDA's, some in the wet, many in tbe dry. Look where he was on Cathros video compared to Greg and Ben before making a mistake (those boys were trying that day for sure). Nobody can take this away from Reece, he won in the woods on what Gwin said was the hardest track he had ever ridden.

I'm just happy racing is back!
  • 11 0
@martin737: which lotteries are you buying tickets for because I'd love to try my hand at a skill based lottery ticket Smile
  • 6 6
Of course it takes an insane amount of skill to make it down in these conditions but you can't deny that a muddy sloppy track adds a ton a variability to the results. Race this 10 times and there will be 10 different winners.
  • 6 0
It’s not a lottery if conditions are bad. All top riders can also ride in the wet. And of course there are specialists for these kinds of conditions, and it’s only fair if they get their chance from time to time.

On the other hand, it easily becomes a lottery if conditions change during the race runs, because than suddenly a lot will depend on the starting position, not on skill alone.

And most times, when it’s as wet as yesterday, conditions change quite a bit. When Bruni entered the track, some parts of it where really destroyed, some ruts were very deep and couldn’t be avoided anymore...

In the end it’s still about bringing down a race run without mistakes in conditions most of us wouldn’t be able to complete the first 20 meters without going down, and Reece Wilson did that, going much faster also than the people starting immediately before and after him.

But would he also have won if he has gone last? I doubt it very much.
  • 1 4
@FuzzyL: this, around 110 120 people started before loic bruni, troy brosnan etc and when bruni started track is in the worst condition possible
  • 11 1
 @martin737:
Many other riders slid off in the forest section because they were not good enough. Reece was. Reece won because he was the best rider on that track today. End of discussion.
  • 1 1
Who is saying it's a lottery? Who are you responding to specifically?
  • 10 0
@Mattwendling: it only adds variability because WC races are usually done in summer time.

The comments on this have really highlighted how many people think MTB stops when the bike parks close.
  • 2 0
@RabWardell: Good ride from Reece, well done !!!!!!!!!
But everyone else made mistakes so legit win for sure!

  • 5 0
@Mattwendling: ummm, that's just about every race, variability takes a part in every race. It seems as though a lot of people are trying to diminish Reece's accomplishment because of the conditions and that's just plain poor sportsmanship. Just look at Bruni's reaction when he finished, he went straight to Reece with a giant smile on his face and congratulated him for the amazing race he road, one that no one else could better on that day.
  • 5 0
 @kegron:
I fail to see how there's any other way of looking at it. He was one of the only guys with enough skill to actually ride the track rather than slide down it on his ass. Say what you want about how they should have changed the track to suit the conditions, he was the best rider that day, and nobody can take that away from him.
  • 1 0
@notthatfast: Tell that to Danny Hart or other riders who excel in muddy conditions. There are so many variable that can influence results, especially days like these. Reece was excellent and won the lottery Wink
  • 3 0
 @martin737:
I think we're in agreement here. The weather and track conditions for sure are a lottery. The race results absolutely are not - it takes a mud wizard like Danny or Reece to win a race like this.

@KxPop: XC/DH/EWS Fantasy league, on good days. You're welcome! Seriously, there're "lotteries" which require skills and LUCK Wink

  • 1 0
@KxPop: You should participate, it's still open. "Lottery" in a sense that there are many variables and winners are drawn at random. You need skills to pick your team and luck to win the contest, in the end there're many participants with the same amount of points and the winner is chosen randomly. Good luck! Wink

@TheBearDen: Excuse us rest of the world for being incredibly confused by everything UK. I thought Great Britain includes Scotland and Wales but not Northern Ireland. Seems like those cheering for GB could just as well be cheering for Scotland as well as it is just part of it, innit?

That said, I don't give a crap about the whole nationalist ego surrounding sports. Especially in DH racing, how much do the national sports federations even contribute to these athletes? To me it is largely the teams and sometimes personal energy drink supplier who contribute most. Not always, I know. I recall back when she was competing in WC 4X, Anneke Beerten was training with the national BMX team and could use the olympic training facilties. But I thought that was largely because the head coach was an ex team mate (Bas de Bever). Joost Wichman (another4X world champ from the same country) never got that treatment. Aside from France, do World Championship gravity mtb athletes in other countries get any considerable support from their national sports federation? If not, seems like there is little reason to go all 'murrica-like about it. Cheer for whoever you want to cheer for. You see in other sports where people cheer primarily for which country someone is from and I don't see it do any good.

So yeah, please keep this shit at bay. Sure feel proud if you're feeling it, but if Rob is genuinely stoked for anyone regardless of where that rider comes from, that is great in its own right and doesn't need anything to balance it out.
  • 11 4
@vinay: I think you kinda missed my point... And your rant was hella long and so far from being on topic to what I was explaining to the other guy

Scotland is a wonderful country full of some the nicest people I have ever met. They are also very proud of where they come from and rightfully so.

I see no reason why Scottish Riders shouldn't be allowed to race under their flag as they have some amazing athletes that I guarantee you would proudly rep the Blue and White at world champs.

At this time I'm just happy for the young lad laying down a wicked run and taking Gold.
But man I would love to see in the future the blue and white for those who bleed it.

I think you need to spend some time thinking about those living in countries that have to show up and race under some other flag just cause back in the day there was a king and queen that people gave a shit about... Well some gave a shit about haha
  • 6 2
@vinay: I get confused by that too. I know that in the Olympics people from northern Ireland can choose if they want to represent the Republic of Ireland or the UK team which is confusingly referred to as "GB and NI". GB and NI is the UK, so why not call the team UK? No idea. And in this race, it was called Great Britain.
Another one for you while I'm on the subject: "Chinese Taipei". A case of outdated politics turned present day political ambiguity.

@TheBearDen: If you were trying to make this point in that one and a half sentence then sorry for missing it. Using more words does have its merits, you might like to consider it if you insist on getting your point across. Who was on topic is even up for debate.

@jaame: Yeah, I'm aware of this too. But I hate the olympics (because of even more nationalism and nations' pride over athletes' backs). Either way, yeah I don't get why sometimes it seems like they mean to say UK and then say GB. Don't mean to go too deep into politics but with the whole Brexit issue I initially thought "just leave with GB then and leave Northern Ireland with the Irish" but well, apparently they did want more of an UKxit. That said, I'm not sure about the Welsh but I recall the Scottish didn't want to leave EU either. So let's just keep it a Englaxit and call it a day Smile .

But back to (what I'd call) on topic, let people just cheer for whoever they want to cheer for, regardless of where they come from.

@vinay: Surprised to see my name pop up here on the forum Smile Not sure where you got your facts from but I can guarantee you Joost also had the possibility to train at the OTC with the team. And he often did so. Joost and I rode a lot together, since the age of 6! Not everyone might get the same support from their federation but as a racer it is always special when you get to represent your country.

@TheBearDen: The great weirdness of our national federations. Some things we have 'TEAM GB' and other things we have team England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I suspect a lot of it is to do with Olympic funding, not so much mtb but track and road cycling gets a lot of that and if it was Eng/Scot/Wal I suspect the Scottish and Welsh riders would see their funding dry up overnight, our government being what it is. I doubt Reece will be too worried about any of that though, the Scots will make sure everyone knows where their first MTB world champ comes from.

@TheBearDen: Another interesting point would be: "Is Scotland a country?"

It has (some of) its own money.
It has a government, kind of.
It does not have a separate head of state.
It does not issue passports. It does not have its own distinct military or a seat at the UN.
It has a strong national identity.
I think the majority of Scots would say "Scottish" when asked their nationality, but they voted to stay as part of the UK by a small margin.

I always found it interesting in surfing that there are surfers representing "USA" and "HAW" where perhaps in other sports there is no Hawaiian nationality.

@vinay: 52.5% of the voting public in Wales, 38% in Scotland and 44% in Northern Ireland voted for Brexit. So it was the English and Welsh that voted for it. But the percentages show there are stupid people in those other parts of the UK too.

@annekebeerten: Ah, I was clearly wrong about Joost then! I was following your articles as well as Jill's during the 4X competition (loved to see both perspectives). Joost also had a website though I don't recall having seen him write about training at the olympic facilities. Nor do I recall seeing him in your pictures with the BMX team, though obviously it is hard to recognize people with goggles and full face helmets. Either way, I was wrong there, sorry! Initially national teams and all seemed cool to me too. Then the more I learned about Eastern European female athletes being drugged and abused "to make their countries proud" (and still not getting proper recognition and respect), national team "supporters" collectively going hateful towards people supporting other countries' athletes. I was also in a team once that won a big event (solar car racing, nothing bike related or even athletic) and sure it was cool. But soon enough I felt sickened by how the effort was being used for national or even political purposes. It seemed like this prime minister couldn't stop trying to associate himself with the team. So yeah, maybe I have more negative associations with the link between sports and nationalism than others. So if someone is being slammed for crediting a winner from an other country it kind of hits a wrong string with me. Cheer for whoever you want to cheer for, regardless of where they come from.

As for your name popping up here, it still does! I recently asked why you weren't racing slalom at the Strait Acres a few weeks ago and Rachel commented that you were concussed. So that was a bummer but more than anything, I hope your healing up properly!

@commental: absolutely, because the only possible reason to vote for Brexit was stupidity. It is a completely binary situation, in which there is only one right choice (Remain) which all enlightened people can see. Only the stupid people can't see it, and unfortunately they are the majority. Also there is absolutely no difference in people's perspectives or opinions on anything. What's right for one is right for all. Baa!
  • 2 3
@commental: Ha Ha! Retainers are still salty lol

@jaame: you are clearly not stupid and yet sound like you've never heard the vast range of arguments explaining why Brexit is a batshit idea. That is the scary thing. What happened?

@jclnv: you on the other hand... Shouldn't you be out looking for underground adrenochrome farms?
  • 5 0
Actually forget it, there is no debate to be had anymore. This is purely a matter for psychologists, future historians and hopefully the courts who will try the perpetrators. The proof will be in the substandard pudding (to be approved in the house of commons today).
  • 5 3
@BenPea: I am intelligent enough to understand (and perhaps more importantly to accept) that everyone does not agree with everyone else. Different people place more weight on different factors in the Brexit debate. If someone decides that they want to cut their nose off to spite their face, who am I to tell them they are stupid? People will do what people do. I accept that I'm just along for the ride, a single ant in a huge colony of ants.

I will always try to focus on the positives in any given situation, even when the pessimistic among us will tell us there are none. For example, the blue passport. I prefer the colour to bergundy. That's a plus, however small. Feeling positive aboit a change in passport colour is a lot better for my health than feeling negative about all the shit associated with Brexit. I don't get to control either. Being in a post-Brexit UK is still better than living in 80% of the other countries in the world so what has everyone got to moan about really? As I tell my kids on a regular basis - kids their age in the Philippines are rummaging through garbage dumps looking for scrap metal to sell. Kids their age in Africa are already working as soldiers in tin pot armies. Kids the age of my daughter in the middle East are already married to men four times their age and expecting kids. I could go on.

Brexit isn't worth the coverage it gets. We live, we die. It's up to us to make the most of what happens in between on a personal level. That's why I ride bikes, lift weights, have sex, play football and go on holiday. They are the things I enjoy. And commentimg on Pinkbile. That's fun too.

Of course Brexit is a sh*t show, just like The U.S. election, European politics, Fiat money, bailouts of banks, bailout of companies who are "to big to fail", the perception of refugees from Western wars or colonization. I could go on but think of the children... We all know it's a sh*t show. The question is, why do we let it happen?

Hands down the most exciting race in year. Forget all the nonsense about fast, tight racing ... that was exciting viewing. I personally don’t want to see rider after rider hammer the same lines, at the same pace over and over. We want to see the worlds best tackle courses and conditions that we mere mortals couldn’t.

Also amazing to see how things reshuffle when the conditions and tracks don’t favour people from hot countries.

So pleased for Reece. Has looked class all week. Knew that the conditions suited him and showed that it categorically wasn’t a lottery!

flag WoS (Oct 11, 2020 at 23:46) (Below Threshold)
It was pathetic to watch the racers tripod down or plunge into the mud.
I think the track was not suited for the late season at all.
If almost every rider crashes, it is not a race. Downhill is about finding small margins!
And think about all the juniors having to ride the same track early morning :-S
  • 6 2
@WoS: If lots of riders crash it's not because they aren't capable of riding the course - these are the best in the world. It's because they don't have the experience of managing the pressure of racing at this level when the conditions don't allow you to push 100% the whole way.
  • 3 4
@johnnyboy11000: Like Minnaar going otb? Or Bruni the winner of last season?
People complained about the bog in Fort William two years ago and now at Leogang, the whole lower wood section was a bog and steep. So if many of the top riders struggle, the track is not appropriate in my opinion.
  • 3 1
@WoS: exactly, it's difficult even for the top guys. Margin for error is severely reduced when compared with racing in ideal conditions. Just because the guys who usually win in ideal conditions didn't manage to for this one-off "all or nothing" race doesn't mean that the track is unsuitable.
  • 3 7
flag vttiste (Oct 12, 2020 at 2:23) (Below Threshold)
@johnnyboy11000: i think you're wrong they weren't capable of riding the course. Even the best of the worlds where on tripod. Even Danny Hart was not riding this shit and he knows mud. True, this race was pathetic and it's not proper downhill (not proper biking at all). Because the win was not about riding a bike with some decent speed but about mud wrestling. You can always argue on were is the limit but when most of the best riders of the world are struggling to just walk pas the pond, it's not ok.
  • 2 0
@johnnyboy11000: i think the best response i have read here is this one :

Of course it takes an insane amount of skill to make it down in these conditions but you can't deny that a muddy sloppy track adds a ton a variability to the results. Race this 10 times and there will be 10 different winners.

And i will add that champery, when Hart did win was a muddy sloppy track and proper downhill, this one was a muddy pond track.
  • 3 0
Thats why EWS is much more entertaining then DH... everyone knows that highways suck but they keep changing the tracks to be " more safe" so stupid
  • 3 2
@kegron: riding with a leg out is still riding. It's not like they were all getting off and pushing. If all you care about is watching a race with decent speed then go and watch the Giro d'Italia.

Your point about variability of results doesn't make any sense either, do you want to see the same guys win every week? Also what if they did run races like this and the same guys got on the podium every time, what would you think then?
  • 4 1
@kegron: not proper mountain biking? As far as I could tell people were riding mountain bikes down a mountain? Just happened that on this day the conditions were wet and muddy.

If that’s not ‘proper mountain biking’ then why is mountain biking booming in the UK. These are the conditions that we ride from October to April every year (some years that is our summer too). Scotland riding is muddy, rooty, steep and technical -including the Tweed Valley where Reece grew up riding. Other countries never experience that as they transition from dry hardpack to ski season (Bruni, Gwin, Pirron). It’s therefore no shock that someone who has come up riding these conditions excelled.

Variety is actually fair as it allows people who specialise in these conditions a chance to show their skills as opposed to the norm where the key skills are flat out on grippy tracks.

Well not a real privateer. None the less an awesome run and a well deserved silver medal.
  • 35 1
@chri92: what do you think a privateer is? he wasn't on a factory race team, he was entering races as a private solo entity, thats the definition of a privateer.
  • 1 3
@lognar: didn't he race for propain factory racing 2 years ago?? That's not a private set up. Fair play to trummer his progress has been good to see! Nice to see a big shake up today.
  • 6 0
@DMRobinson: racing for factory one year doesn’t preclude you from being a privateer the next year if you arent on a team anymore
  • 76 1
I know this is hard and pretty grim for the riders but my god is it entertaining to watch them hang on for dear life lmao
  • 13 0
Just remember the woods section from fort bill a year back. Minnaar breezed through it every time. There will be some masterclasses in riding later on from a few riders
  • 17 1
@gmcc: this is always my go to reference when arguing how entertaining this type of riding is. It’s never a fluke. You see some riders have the measure of it and therefore do well - it’s just it may not be the normal front runners because they’re abnormal conditions.

If anything it shows how capable some riders are but that they’re generally handicapped by the one dimensional tracks that have become the norm.
  • 62 1

Could there be a new generation of top UK DH racers, as there was over a decade ago with Ruaridh (would have to look up his name to spell it correctly, sorry), Josh, Laurie, Brendog, Danny Hart and of course the Athertons? At the time you were always certain that they captured half the number of podium spots available. Now that Dirt magazine went out of print I don't have a clue about what's going on over there, which is a shame. I recall seeing Danny Hart already being dominant at the BDS as a kid (and I was honestly surprised to not be blown away by his results with Lapierre, riding with Nicolas Vouilloz) but he delivered eventually. So yeah, for the Brits and Irish over here, is this something you saw coming? Seems like you've got some proper talent over there again.
  • 2 0
Way to go Óisín O’Callaghan!!! On a Sick 1
  • 3 2
@vinay: and Irish, seeing as its an Irish victory and thats not in the UK
  • 5 0
@PeterT: Absolutely, I'm not mixing these up. The British had a lot of top results, a single Irish rider took the top spot. Both amazing. Dirt used to cover the British scene as well as the Irish scene so as a reader you were aware of up and coming athletes in both countries. Notice I'm calling both separately in my one but last sentence.
  • 3 0
@vinay: gotcha! what a run for him, would have had him well up in the mens with a top 10!
  • 1 0
@PeterT: Yeah, and well ahead of the rest of the pack in his own category. Again as for the Brits, I just noticed they sent six riders in this category and they all finished in the top eleven.

As the WC races are only about to start, we can expect more muddy conditions this northern hemisphere so if you've proven to be able to do well here, chances are you'll do well at the World Cups too this year.

Or at least don't block those who do a proper job (Redbull in this case) from doing it. Even worse, don't use public money to buy the rights and then don't do the job at all!

ive never been happier to read a pinkbike news article . fucking amazing result what a ride . this is massive for scottish DH and huge props to all those that set the pathway for reece . everyone at BASE college course and all the coaches and guest coaches should be fucking hugely proud of themeselves .The vision from chris ball and all those who followed and contributed should be very proud . I done get emotional very often but was very very prouf of the scottish athletes this weekend . Greg williamson ,reece ,isla short and Mikayla Parton absolutley killed it bravehart style .

So much armchair commentary on BREXIT and riding in the mud....

-Not everyone in England voted for BREXIT. Nearly half didnt.
-Everyone forgets Reece spent a lot of time in the hotseat at Fort Bill a few years back...in the dry
-The results for the Brits (and specifically the Scottish) were excellent. Because these are the conditions they have to ride in. Junior mens says it all with 6 from GB or IRl in the top 10.
-It was a race, just a different one. Those who got down clean weren't lucky, that does them a massive disservice. They were the most skilled in the conditions on the day. That's racing.
-There are a lot of Brits who are happy to celebrate the union and cheer on the Scottish. Sporting rivalry within the union is an important part of national identity. I was as pleased as an Englishman to see the first Scottish champ as I was to see GBR win. It does not have to be either or.
-Id be pleased for Reece and the others in the top 10 of each area regardless of nationality. Getting down that course in a good time is an awesome achievement.

Seems there is a sad fact of human nature that we have to find ways to diminish peoples achievements. Lets not do that, lets just celebrate the amazing individuals who did battle on that hill.

To be fair, I was at Fort Bill that day when Reece was in the hot chair and it was pishing it down. So pleased for him them, but I was bouncing around the room yeaterday watching that. A quick blast down Farmer Johns in the morning and then seeing that in the afternoon. What a memorable day. Huge for Reece and for Scottish mountain biking. Looking at all the DH, EWS and X Country results - Scotland are world class at mountain biking. They deserve more recognition. Hopefully 2023 will bring that.

Wilson. Greeting. What a run. Scottish gold, I never thought I'd live to see the day!

I really missed being able to watch DH races this year. Despite some technical grief with a lack of capacity from Red Bull's web servers that was an awesome way to spend an afternoon. Sincere thanks to all the riders, marshalls, medics and everyone else who made it possible. Nobody is buying a helicopter with the profits from a downhill race, and making that race happen in 2020 was no small effort
  • 3 0
Best race Ive seen in years. It was a full on puzzle trying to figure out how to get down and the fastest riders were the ones that managed it all the best. Truly showed the diverse set of skills some of these riders posses that just never get to be put to use!
  • 4 0
Congrats to Reece, great run. And great to see someone so emotional. Also great run from David, he is even getting better since last year. Wild run from Remi in the mud-hell, congratulations!
  • 5 0
Meal do naidheachd Reece. Emotional stuff. A large Laphroaig raised to you (also great to see Greg Williamson in 7th as well). What a day!
  • 4 0
Is there a full clip of Reece's winning run anywhere?? Definitely great to finally see some racing, but pretty disappointed to spend that much time watching the event and not actually get to see how the winning guy won.

Reeses win today is better than Scotland winning the world cup in football! (Am not a football fan, but man that would be special haha)

Therions run was wild too, was stoked to see that!

Personally thought that was a awesome race, I want to see the worlds best nail conditions I wouldn't even dream of attempting and thats what we got today! Brilliant watching!
  • 4 0
What a result from the young Brits! That’s Dan’s first international event as well, the future is looking good.
  • 1 0
No it wasn't a lottery, not at all! BTW please find the difference between Leogang W-Champs and this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvuktushEhY&fbclid=IwAR0_VverHjtxrPFUGzquhqfaY00LQgD4COdvueECILq9V8mT1QhpIESMYxY (spoiler: Britons perform well in both disciplines Wink ). Ps. Reece Wilson did extremely well and stoked for him, but the shere luck of catching a root benith a feet or so of greasy mud did play a role here (statistics do not lie, look at top 10, 30...it doesn't remind anything NORMal).
  • 1 0
In my opinion, it has nothing to do with lottery. Dh is finding the limit in between going fast and staying on your bike. People who won are just good enough to ride on tha small line in between. Reece dealed with the conditions like an absolute f champ. He might have been slower than qualis but he's won after all, wich mean he was the most balanced rider of the day. Maybe some people were faster in some places but they were not good enough to stay at a safe pace and it cost their runs! Big up Reece, well deserved
  • 3 0
Has anyone got more than 40s of Reece's winning run??? Would love to see the whole thing, it must be out there somewhere......surely.....
  • 2 1
Tough conditions, ok. Nothing new in this sport ..... But the fact that the bike can't even roll... I see it as unnecessary. It distorts the explosiveness, showiness and speed of this sport. Except for trek I don't think the rest of the sponsors are very happy....
  • 1 0
Anyone know when the Redbull replay will become available to all the Geo restricted countries? Can't believe this is a thing, NBC sucks at covering sports like this so nobody watches them even if they could with this network...

Wyn Masters was speaking to him earlier (during the juniors) and I couldn't quite work out what was going on - sounded like he wasn't going to start due to his federation, but it was confusing.

  • 4 2
That was a very difficult race to watch. I can't imagine how frustrating riding that track must have been. Looked miserable.
  • 6 4
Unfortunately the track change was completely for worse, but that's totally due to the current conditions. Looking forward to seeing it next year with better conditions.

 Great, crazy race.

The "Red Bull Lockout" (or "geo restriction" as it was called) was not worthy of this event. Shame on anyone who was responsible for this garbage!!
  • 1 0
Just got to say on BBC you have to search to find Reece Wilson victory. To say BBC covered the UCI races having paid money for it they are not doing it justice. It's a major international victory.
  • 1 0
Imagine what Red Bull Hardline winner / Rampage podium Gee Atherton would have done with these conditions and technical levels... Just do not understand what the GB was thinking. They could have covered that podium.
  • 4 0
Or he could have fallen 4 times like Champery 2011. GB finished in strong positions so the team picks were justified really and who could predict the weather before submitting their roster?
