What a run for Canadian Mark Wallace who made short work of the rain to qualify first ahead of Aaron Gwin.

Maribor provided some classic racing as the top four men were separated by less than a second. It would be current World Champion Loic Bruni who would take the win on board his new mixed wheel Specialized Demo. 0.404 seconds back would be Danny Hart who was also sporting two wheel sizes and managed to hang onto the hot seat for what felt like most of the race. Troy Brosnan has looked quick on track since the iXS round last weekend and he put together a great run that would place him third. On his first race for Trek Factory Racing, Charlie Harrison would prove he is one to watch this year as he stays within a second of Bruni's time. Hart's teammate Matt Walker couldn't quite repeat his performance from last weekend but a fifth place for the young ready is still very impressive.

In the Elite Women's race, it was an all-out battle between the two British riders Rachel Atherton and Tahnee Seagrave. In the end, Tahnee would best Rachel by 0.855 seconds but the close split times show that this season is going to be pretty exciting between the two racers. tracey Hannah couldn't quite match her top qualifying position from yesterday but her third-place finish shows she is still a strong contender for this season. Scott Factory rider Marine Cabirou showed she is also one to watch this year as she held onto the hot seat for most of the race. Monika Hrastnik would complete the podium 4.325 seconds back in a very competitive women's field.

Thibaut Daprela and Vali Holl continue where they left off in 2018 with big wins in Maribor. Thibaut took the Junior Men win with a margin of over three seconds on Ethan Shandro. Kye A'Hern would fall just over four seconds back from first with Lucas Cruz and Goncalo Bandeira completing the top five. In the Junior Women's race, Vali Holl would dominate the field with an almost 10 second lead over Anna Newkirk. Atherton Bikes team rider Mille Johnset would pilot the prototype bike into third just a few hundredths of a second back from 2nd place. Lauryne Chappaz and Ottilia Johansson Jones would come across the line in fourth and fifth.

Dumped out a can of Monster and filled it with water to drink as I watch this first World Cup DH round.

Redbull may have given you energy drink paranoia. It turns out Monster makes several flavors that, get this, DON'T taste like dirty socks smell. My personal favorite, the hydro flavors. No they don't pay me to say these things. But they could.

I don't believe you. I can smell that nasty diabetic jizz flavor from like 20 feet away whenever someone cracks a Monster in my vicinity.

Bravo bravo, what an act of courage, you totally sent the message to Red Bull, who knows maybe you just changed the sport.

Great racing and great coverage by Redbull. The whole weekend has been brilliant, with the complimentary stuff from RB helping the build up. I can't see how anyone can slag off this free, in-depth coverage. There was a time when there was nothing. Thanks again....
  • 18 12
the coverage was great but that dopesnt channge fact that redbull is acting 'bit' douchy
  • 11 10
@nikifor88: douchy by which standards? Like Peaty sitting on the hot seat and showing a can of Monster straight to the camera? I wonder how you would behave if you were in Red Bulls shoes.
  • 4 2
@WAKIdesigns: probably douchy as well, doesnt change the fact that its just not cool to abuse power like this

@WAKIdesigns: also, there is wayyyyyy less content than used to be and stuff like yesterdays 'top 3 quali runs' is just a slap in the face
  • 10 3
@nikifor88: you paid for that content?

@bigwheels87: We all pay for content, just no longer in the traditional sense of consumer transacting money to the producer.

  • 4 2
@Benlow: how exactly am I paying for this? I don't drink Red Bull? Is there a Red Bull mountain bike tax coming out of my paycheck that I'm unaware of? And if the world cup is cancelled for some reason will I be financially better off?

Because otherwise, I reckon I'm getting it for free.

@nikifor88: oh yeah, and people who work for their MTB/MX side are dispassionate aholes cating only about increasing profits. You have no grasp on reality. Nobody would do this job if they weren’t passionate because MTB pays shit.

In grand scheme of things, MTBers and viewers of MtB comps are relatively irrelevant, the target audience is always regular Joes, from clubbing youngsters through truck drivers to folks trying to survive mids birthday party. “Extreme” MTB is just a commercial gig helping to sell drinks to these people.
  • 3 4
@nikifor88: also worth mentioning: this commercial gig they do is making MTB world better off than if RB wasn't there. It is all easy to point out what doesn't work, much harder to propose a solid alternative. Yes Democracy isn't perfect, what else do we got? Gulag?
  • 1 0
@Benlow: sure. sometimes you get what you pay for, that's all.
  • 1 0
@nikifor88: when did i say that? how do you know it's not working well for them? i'd have to agree they're using mountain biking to sell their product to a much wider audience. you think mercedes cares that mountain bikers don't buy sedans?

red bull did $7billion in revenue last year. that's 14x specialized...
  • 3 2
@bigwheels87: 14 times Specialized as a whole, but tlet's see Specialized MTB... Highly possibly Bora Hans Grohe and Peter Sagan gets more funding from Specialized than the whole MTB racing circus, DH in particular. I would not be surprised if Spesh also makes more money from road/ touring/ commuting than all MTBs combined. Wouldn't be surprised either if Red Bull was a big deal of Gwinny's wage. So numbers Redbull vs Spesh MTB can easily go up to 50:1. There's easily thousand-fold more people drinking Redbull who seat on a bicycle twice a year than those who ride frequently. North Face and Black Diamond, La Sportiva sponsors Alex Honnold - I guess they didn't support the Free solo movie to sell more of their stuff to free solo climbers. That's like expecting Nestle to go full vegan.

@WAKIdesigns: @bigwheels87: So if redbull guys love dh so much and its so tough moneywise for everybody on the scene then why make it even harder for athletes getting paid by other energy drinks?
  • 1 0
@nikifor88: because they can and they don't care. maybe they'll reverse course, but they'll take the publicity either way.
  • 1 1

Yea, that was tweaked. And it was posted not too long after the race finished. Maybe staff turnover? Blame it on the new guy? Who does that? Very disappointed with that spoiler.
  • 11 0
Just came here to complain about that. I mean, I'm happy for the coverage and Red Bull is doing a great job, but how the f*ck do you drop the ball on something like that?? So bummed, I just watched who I wanted and the winning runs.
  • 12 0
With you on this. Awesome race, awesome coverage but watching it this afternoon (EST) I went to click on Mens DH replay and I saw "Loic Bruni's winning run" right there on the next vid and it was a huge downer. I watched bits and pieces after that which was still great, but not the same.
  • 5 0
Same. So annoying. Next round I will have to get my girlfriend to go on the Redbull site and start the replay so I don't inadvertantly ruin it again.
  • 4 0
Same, absolutely fuming. Why would you discourage you viewers from watching the full event....

Agreed. Redbull c'mon you're smarter than this. Was very disappointed to have the results spoiled when I opens their streaming app. C'mon guys!!! Just say winning run and have a generic thumbnail. But rad coverage thx for that for sure.

Loris crashed just in front of us and we got showered in small rocks. Best experience ever Wink Got a full video of it, only to realise that I took a photo =( Glad he is fine, brought his visor to the pits, he was cool to sign it and be parted with it. The only negative thing about the race was a group of Slovakian “fans” with modified chainsaws which were stupidly too loud. Cannot cheer on the riders when the noise is so painful that it was overwhelming. The organisers should do something about it, really irritating behaviour. Very sad that someone takes a nice memory of Steve and twists it to idiotic extremes to the annoyance of everyone who was there.
  • 10 0
It comes from mx. I'm fine with chainsaws if people rev them moderatly. The abuse is irritating though. There were a lot of complaints about them being very annoying this year at the MXON in Red Bud.
  • 13 2
I would ban them, so fucking annoying when watching it I can only imagine what it must be like if you are there in person.

Just for the record, they were Czechs not Slovakians.
But I agree that they were annoying and too loud. Although as I saw many others liked their "show".
Not my son (4) though, he did not want to go to the race today because he was so much afraid of them on Saturday...
But the race and the organisation was very good. Well done Bruni, well done Maribor!
  • 26 0
Hey Red Bull thanks for providing coverage all these years. But whats with the spoiler "Loic Bruni's winning DH run - Mariborn" only a couple hours after the actual race time? It used to be "Watch the winning Men's Elite DH run - Maribor" or something like that. I waited since last year for this race and I found out the winner by spoiler. Uncool.
  • 11 0
Totally agree with this, amateur hour at Red bull media spoiling the result for people just trying to load the replay. They should know better.

SUPERBRUNI!!!!

It was worth getting up at 6 in the morning to watch live. The women are great !!! Always good to watch them race

Disappointing there isn't coverage of the rock garden on most of the runs.

Is this due to managing multiple riders on track?
  • 1 0
@robwhynot: yeah I noticed too. I think you guessed it right. Just wish I could be there it must be insane
  • 1 0
@cndhbrider: It was, yes it was
  • 4 0
@robwhynot: Saying that though there seemed to be good coverage on most of the track. We probably had 2mins per rider. Definitely better than a round last year which had from memory 3 camera angles, one at the start, one at a jump in the middle and one at the end.
  • 17 0
Is that Tom Selleck commenting now?
  • 11 0
Félicitations Loic!!! Hart in the rock garden was nerve wracking to watch. Glad to see Finn and Loris are fine. I think we might see Finn's firt win in 2019!!! WC is back yihaaa!
  • 13 0
Did Danny mean to go through that rock garden like that??

 SUPERBRUNI !
  • 2 0
 YEAHHHHHHH !!!!!!
  • 8 0
Loic’s Bike looked smooth and efficient compared to some of the others on that course today. His Suspension seemed to be perfectly dialed today.........Not taking anything away from his riding, but that bike was working like it should.....Nice run!
  • 4 0
Agreeded, remember a couple of seasons ago when he was battling with Gwin he always seemed on the verge of being out of control and crashing? I think it's going to be his year.
  • 2 0
Yes. He was def in full control today and the bike was dialed. @charmingbob:
  • 8 1
Looking at the womens qualifying splits, How did Tracy Hannah pull out the fastest time in the last split, both Seagrave and Atherton were well green for the rest of the run, either super strong or new how to conserve her energy. Good to see some tough competition in the ladies field
  • 6 0
She certainly railed that last berm
  • 11 0
Rob's mustache game went hard in the off season

Some say he's hornier than Ron Jeremy!

i need to know about this bloody swing incident that kade seems so embaressed about
  • 6 0
Fell of a childs swing - buggered his ankle - several weeks off the bike - embarrassed is jolly well right lol - all that stuff he gets up to and he is foiled by a playground swing!!!
  • 11 0
Mark Wallace in the 10 ten, great job!
  • 11 1
How long before Gwin goes to a 29-27 setup??
  • 8 1
I'm not sure the 29er suits him as well as 27.5, but maybe 27.5 rear will work.

Won't matter. He's not fast enough anymore. Also the Specialized has by far the best suspension, it's not just the mixer set-up.
  • 5 0
Agreed. Loic’s bike looked super smooth and carried good speed compared to some of the others. Gwin looked fast, but his bike did not look as good (suspension wise) as Loic’s @jclnv:
  • 3 2
@eball: So did Finn's. Surprise, surprise all that data acquisition and a bike design around it works eh...

Put the World Champ on it and he can win on a fairly calm run.
  • 3 0
@jclnv: I disagree, and Gwin will get things sorted out. What's Pierron's excuse? He and Gwin were pretty close today. It's one race.
  • 9 1
Like I said it before. Why would he go to 29er when he was dominating at 27.5? Make no sense.
  • 2 1
@jclnv: seriously what are you basing this on? There’s nothing to suggest that gwin isn’t fast enough anymore he always starts off slow on a new bike and he normally gets a complete redesign pretty fast which he goes on to dominate with.
  • 2 0
@cliff-huckstable: Weren’t the podium guys riding aluminum rims? Pierron and Gwin riding carbon rims? Maybe a more jarring ride causing more fatigue at the end of the run?
  • 5 0
@thenotoriousmic: He dominated in YT first race and first season.
  • 1 0
@Erotomania: yeah he did very similar bikes though not line going from a session to a demo (Sam hill version) or a YT to a M29. Ether way how can you write him off? Even if he’s not dominating anymore and we can’t say that anymore he’s still the favourite to win any way right now.
  • 7 0
Not sure if it was the wheels but Gwin’s Intense did not look anywhere near as smooth as Loic Spesh @Baciatutti:
  • 8 0
@thenotoriousmic: This was a excellent track for a rider like Gwin. I don’t think he can attack the course with the same precision on a 29 rig, but whatever the reason - he is off pace. The End. Good job Loic.
  • 3 1
@thenotoriousmic: I'm basing it on the crashes he had last year trying to compete. That and Bruni etc getting faster and Gwin growing old.
  • 3 0
@Erotomania: Yup dominated on YT right away and same with Trek. Gwin only struggled with the transition to Specialized, @thenotoriousmic

Great win to Tahnee. Good race. Bring on the mens!

 Connor's scrub was sick

27.5's in all 3 podium spots and Gwin did not look very comfortable on the 29er to my eyes. I don't understand why he switched. Seems like the full 29er rig doesn't work as well in DH as it does out on the trails.

Trading Matt Walker for Minaar at the last minute. Son of a b
  • 5 1
I bet Danny's just glad he beat Matt after the last 2 races, good to see the Brits coming back strong!
