First win of the year for Charlie Harrison

The US DH series kicks off its 2021 season with some wild racing at Windrock.

In the Elite Men's racing, Charlie Harrison comes out on top with a lead of just 0.08 seconds on Dakotah Norton. Fastest qualifier Luca Shaw had a massive crash when a broken chain locked up his rear wheel over the triple jump just within view of the finish line. Aaron Gwin also appears to have had some issues as he posted on Instagram where he said: "Unfortunately nailed a tree at the top of my race run and got stuck tryin to get around the next one. Bummed and sore but overall great weekend good to be on the podium still."

For the Elite Women, Frida Helena Ronning improves upon her second place in qualifying to master the tricky conditions and take the top spot by over one and a half seconds. Kailey Skelton drops one place and crosses the line in 2nd, while Mazie Hayden finishes third, 14 seconds off the pace.

  • 19 0
Not only is he almost as fast as Grice, he is almost as fast as Aaron Gwin!
  • 40 8
@brendan-bowers: almost as fast as Aaron if he hits a tree mid run
  • 3 0
 Wtf, Vlad rips!
  • 20 1
@gunnyhoney: well he shouldn't have done that
  • 4 1
@gunnyhoney: or faster than Bruni who didn't race with this logic

Conclusions: Vlad is a stud. PB Academy was stupid.
  • 1 0
@MajesticMOOSE: The top 3 guys were all crazy fast, but yeah, they should have at least gotten Vlad into a proper race at some point, any point.

Anyone can ride a bike fast. I wanna know how fast he can rebuild his fork!!

damn, really wanted to see richie on the sb165
  • 17 10
Will we ever see Gwin back to his former dominance?
  • 46 4
Doubt he’ll ever dominate like that again, but can defo see him still winning and challenging for overall
  • 9 1
Each time I see him on a race, I hope to see performances from his YT/Specialized years. Sincerely hope it's not over
  • 55 2
He clipped a tree and only ended up 2.4 seconds off... I bet he's ready to rumble this year.
  • 7 2
He dominated that tree for sure. Poor tree haha
  • 14 2
He was 2.6 back after his tree incident and finished 2.4 off so was fastest on the second section of the track
  • 8 2
Lol remember this shit last year that he was done and the podiumed the next day. When you hit a tree, you don't win most days.
  • 54 2
I got to talk to him with no one around yesterday for a bit. He is here relaxing and having a great time & in a good mood.

You're drastically overreacting if you think the guy with the 2nd most all time World Cup wins is somehow done. Talent & drive do not disappear.

Also, by trying to imply he's slipping, you're discrediting the drastic improvements that Luca, Dak & Charlie have made to pull back the gap he had on talent in the US.

Rising tide raises all ships.

 @cuban-b-can-blow-me: nah he’s done lol
  • 5 0
Mainly depends on injuries I'd say.
  • 11 3
@cuban-b-can-blow-me: who is this guy Gwin is definitely no where near done
Don’t forget folks that Gwin hasn’t even rode Windrock for 3 years and he still comes thru and shreds just as hard as the guys who are there locally practicing on their home court daily. Yea Cuban-b ur an idiot

@cuban-b: Please, seriously, go away forever.

@pistol2ne: oh relax we’re all just f*cking around. Beer cheers. Gwin will win again I promise
  • 4 4
Probably not. He shows some speed and flashes of brilliance but there always seems to be some kind of mistake that ruins things for him. Constant mistakes and injuries usually are the result of getting older and lacking the pure intense focus needed to consistently win at this level. Sure he’s fast as hell, no discounting that, but speed doesn’t mean shit if you can’t keep your run clean to the bottom at that speed. Then when he has a mistake free run, it’s not fast. I don’t know, guess we’ll see.

I feel like listening to all the Gwin haters is like listening to the Sam Hill haters about 8 years ago. “He is done”, “won’t ever be dominate again” blah blah blah. I think it’s unlikely he will be as successful as he was on Trek but I would be surprised if he doesn’t surpass Minaar and become the GOAT.
  • 8 0
 @thejake: Minaar ain’t done either
  • 2 1
@myles57 I think we’ll see Gwin back on top. He’s conditioned and he’s hungry.
  • 3 5
Pinner Gwinner, Charlie's had his dinner. Gwinner isn't winning another world cup race, never mind the overall. This isn't 2016.
  • 2 0
@jaame: You’re right. I did eat dinner last night. It was delicious. I don’t think Gwin will take an overall, but I do think he’ll grab a few more World Cup wins. Look at old Minaar crushing and 5 years on Gwin. Gwin with mistakes and misfortune for world champs over and over has been trying, but that makes it all more motivating to get after it.
  • 3 0
@chuckobike: Gwin's past it I think. I do hope he wins the world championship though.
  • 1 0
@purplegorillaz: How about his years on Trek? Those were the most dominant years of his career.

Why RR didn't race? Would be so interesting to see the results

He posted on Instagram that with the rain and mud he did not feel right risking it. He decided to practice with the Yeti team for the enduro, which is today.

  • 5 1
