How to Watch the 2023 World Champs

Aug 1, 2023 at 5:04
by Ed Spratt
Ben Cathro smashing it into 24th

16 years after the 2007 World Championships, Scotland is back hosting one of the biggest events of the year although for 2023 racing will be split across the country with the downhill at Fort William and the XC at Glentress in the Tweed Valley.

The UCI sells all its World Championships in one package so if a broadcaster wants to show the road event, they'll get the mountain biking included as part of the deal too. Unfortunately, since mountain biking isn't as high ticket as some other disciplines, it often isn't broadcast live. We have included the UCI breakdown of the broadcast rights holders below.

I just don't even care anymore
  • 155 6
This has been my feeling of late. It's hard to keep caring when the whole thing is such a disorganised, opaque, shit-show. If it wasn't for hardline, rampage, cranworx etc, I think I'd be ready to give up on following organised mtb competitions completely, which is a hard thing for me to say... I've been an avid fan of WC DH since the freecaster days and barely missed a single race. Since discovery took over I've watched one full race, and one just qualies, but I can't really be bothered to make time for it any more.

Frown feels like a task just trying to follow what's happening.

@gabiusmaximus: while I preferred the redbull coverage I just don’t really see it as such a drastic change like you do. Other than having to pay for GCN+ I’ve found the coverage itself to be pretty similar to Redbull just with announcers who aren’t as good.

This garbage with World Champs being shown on a different package is not new. It’s been happening for years now and is not new to Discovery taking over.

@sino428: Errr, World Champs was on red bull tv, same as all the other races.

 @gabiusmaximus: not in the USA.

 I really don't care, do U?
  • 12 1
@gabiusmaximus: I wonder what the effects are for the contracts of the riders over term. We all know that more exposure means better sponsorship deals. At the end of the day, companies who invest in riders want to see their ROI. With exposure decreasing, the marketing departments will forecast budgets accordingly.
  • 18 0
@mtbmaniatv: they shouldn’t have to be press releases about where to access the content. The platform that we’re already paying for should give us everything we need to know about the entire summer schedule.
  • 6 0
@lastminutetech: Have you checked the website? It's literally a blank page, at least when logging in from the US!

@pisgahgnar: mountain biking has a significant barrier to entry with the cost of a bike and a car to get to the hill. So they haven’t figured out that the users have money but in return we expect some quality offerings
  • 33 9
@sino428: I completely disagree the GCN+ coverage is garbage! The announcers are lame (Sorry Cedric) There is zero excitement, the camera work is mediocre at best.. I could go one but there is no point ... I'm out.
  • 15 4
Same. Haven’t watched a single race this year. I just can’t be arse to pay money to not have Rob.

And since I’ve I’ve got out of the habit, I can’t really be arsed with champs now either, even if it is on the BBC…
  • 42 11
@Darknut: if you muted a GCN and redbull broadcast and put them side by side there would be very little difference in the actual race coverage. I agree that the broadcast team on Redbull was better but the GCN guys are fine. Calling the GCN broadcast ‘garbage’ just isn’t being objective about the situation.

@gabiusmaximus: true dat. And I think more riders should be able to qualify for ginals in mens category

  • 14 3
@waxed: so your complaining that they are showing you more racing?

You could just not watch all of it. Maybe just watch finals if that’s all you are into. I think many people like the option to watch more if they choose.
  • 14 0
@edspratt: PB should run a post-race poll to see how and if people even bothered to watch this year's Worlds.
  • 6 8
@sino428: yes its diluted and an overload maybe if it had rob commentating to keep me awake would be ok but those guys literally put me to sleep during semis and finals last race so i had to catch up on it afterwards to find out who won!

  • 12 2
@gabiusmaximus: Aye, I used to watch them religiously on Red Bull, never missed a race. I watched them all live. I really cannot be bothered now. I only checked this because it is world champs, so might make the effort.
  • 15 1
Thank you UCI cycling. I now have more time to ride my bike since I don’t bother watching any racing at all, aside from what riders put on their socials. Good job!
  • 18 3
Yes Rob was entertaining (though far from perfect). But if you can't watch DH without him, it sounds like you're into Rob and not that into DH.
  • 3 0
@waxed: I agree. I love watching racing but there is such thing as "too much of a good thing."
Watching ~1hrs Womens and ~2hrs Mens on a Sunday or Monday evening was nicely manageable without affecting everything else I have to do in daily life.
I've not bothered with it this year for many reasons but a standout reason is I just don't have the time to watch more footage, stretched out over a whole weekend.
And people saying "you don't have to watch it"... Well of course I don't. I'm not. But it doesn't mean I don't have massive FOMO by not seeing it all. The highlight moments of racing are that much better when you've watched the rest of it for context.
  • 3 0
@haroman666: treat the semis like qualifying which wasn’t broadcast before and just watch the final that starts at the same time as last year and features the same number of riders
  • 9 0
@sino428: The real issue is when you’ve paid for GCN+ and then you still can’t watch World Champs because another channel has bought the rights in your country, and wants you to pay them as well….shit show

  • 1 0
@Hammer155: This is how I watch almost everything cycling related from the US. I like GCN+ a lot
  • 1 0
I think they're trying to make money from fans/ spectators. MotoGP has been doing this kinda thing for years but the difference there is that sponsorship within the sport has built to a point it's sustainable and broadcasters have to pay millions to have the rights to cover the sport then they sell subscriptions to offset that investment.

Downhill/mountain biking went a little quiet for me around 2014 and when I made the effort I could be in the loop of the WC. I feel like there was a similar thing happening around then. these broadcasters are asking too much from a relatively small audience
  • 148 7
GCN+/Discovery+, what you’ve just released is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent broadcast schedule were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

How the UCI parted ways with Red Bull is beyond me. They had a partnership with a global brand that had an infinitely better brand than their own!! Entities do backflips to be able to partner with strong brands (like Red Bull) and extend their reach and end-user perception.

I laugh when I see all the best riders come down the hill wearing Red Bull helmets yet I’m paying for CGN+.
  • 10 0
Glaswegians can watch for free from their upstairs windows, apparently.

  • 11 3
@owl-X: That is what Im saying. They took short term higher bidding from CGN+ for the rights instead of sticking with a global brand and growing what was already working. Im sure RB came to the table with a rights offer. It would have been well received if RB would have marketed a robust platform as $20/month for all WC circuit, Worlds, Rampage, Hardline, Crankworx etc and promoted the heck out of a solid platform that included Rob. Instead the UCI opted for the highest bidder and has (even further) damaged it's brand. For god sakes the top voted post here says " just dont even care anymore"....well done UCI
  • 1 2
 @PhillipJ: read above
  • 5 1
@lastminutetech: uh, yeah. UCI guys are into more money right now. That’s it that’s all. Sounds like you’re familiar with their moves…which belies your claim that their dropping RedBull is beyond you. You know it. More cash right now, more schmooze trips, more bribes, right now now now now. They don’t care about the riders, the fans, or the sport.
If it all dies, we’ll look up to see they were out, on to another grift.

BUSINESS!

For real, the UCI is ickmode supreme.

I've written this many times before. I paid for Flosports last year only to sign on and listen to the announcer coughing up some snot on a hot mic while complaining about how long of a day it would be. He wondered out loud "why don't they just send the fastest riders down first and get this over with?" So unprofessional. I got my money back.

FloSports? Sounds more like a phishing site than an actual place to watch the race. I know many disliked Redbull coverage, but at least it was widely available and reliable, without a subscription.

Oddly enough it seems FloSports subscriptions are by specific sports (in this case, cycling), and it's $150 for a year up front or $30 for month to month. If you watch a lot of cycling (e.g. road and BMX in addition to DH), it might be worth it; but for only DH racing, it doesn't seem like a great deal.
  • 62 3
I’ve watched the least DH this year in my entire life. Kinda sad. You don’t even see winning run clips or anything floating around post race. Sucks for the athletes too.
  • 26 1
I think overall most people were pretty stoked on redbull coverage, especially being free and all
  • 13 0
FloSports has a weird market dominance in broadcasting really niche sports I believe. Last summer the ama outdoor nationals (American pro motocross series) was exclusively streamed by flo. It was presented as a MAVTV service, but the back end it was totally a flo production. It was f*cking awful, total train wreck, streams constantly going fuzzy or not working at all just a blank screen half the race. It was so bad that the series promoters just kept streaming the motos on YouTube for free because they felt so bad for asking people to pay for a dog shit service lol. A lot of people canceled their subscription halfway through the season and kept getting billed many months later as well.

Long story long is flo is super sketchy but they just make money off of streaming sports a lot of major networks can’t be bothered by lol.

can you not use GCN+ in America. Its like €30 for the year
  • 1 0
@stretchza: I would assume a VPN would help make that possible. Never tried, yet.
  • 2 0
@stretchza: We use GCN+ for all the regular races but Worlds is licensed differently I guess. I can VPN using various countries but it's all paid isn't it? I guess I have to use a sketchy streamer.

they finally did a monthly price? I never signed up before because you had to pay $150 up front, and it was hard to even tell what you would be able to watch for $150, so I never signed up. I might try the monthly just to watch this event.

  • 57 1
How is the UCI and Discovery so bad at this?!?

I haven't watched a World Cup live all year because it's too much of a hassle for subpar content, but I watched Crankworx Whistler on the 1199 with Warner and Eli commenting, and the coverage, the track, and the price was great- free on Youtube!

Now they think I'm going to pay even more money, for an even shittier service, for just the Fort Bill race?
  • 49 1
time to fire up the vpn and see if it works for gcn +. Really cool to pay for the service and not be able to watch one of the biggest races of the year
  • 3 0
I have not checked but if it is similar to the Tour De France, which was also streamed by Flo in Canada, routing through a VPN to a UK location should allowed you to watch the GCN+ broadcast.
  • 2 0
If it is on GCN+ then it should work. Ala Tubby, I have paid for GCN for road and cyclocross racing for a few years prior to this year taking over DH and XC, and when I set it to a UK location for the VPN it always worked.
  • 7 0
Spot on. I've paid for GCN+ and watched the least f*cking DH in the past few years since Red Bull started streaming it. The World Champs is a sh!t show of note and the bone heads at the UCI wonder why they cant get sponsors.
  • 3 0
 VPN and GCN+ should work?
  • 2 0
@wolftwenty1: worked for me during the tour, as stated above!
  • 1 0
 So brutal.
  • 5 0
@wolftwenty1: Works great... and GCN has a directory on their website that shows what's on in the different countries. I'm in the US but I prefer to hear Sean Kelly and Robbie McEwen over Phill and Bob Wink

*The best thing about GCN+ is that the multi language commentary menu has a choice called "Ambient Sound" ...it gives you a completely commentary free feed. You can actually hear the riders talking in road races.

For MTB, I don't like the new commentators so I use the option to completely turn them off. It's awesome.
  • 1 0
@SimonD: Agreed. I hate the DH commentary, especially Cedric (sorry dude) and it really has lost entertainment value since RBTV was canned. As for the worlds, the Supersport monopoly makes me sick. At least before I could watch on RBTV with a VPN. I guess I'll be trying to find it on Tiz.
  • 49 7
Quick poll... Who else hasn't watched a single race this year and used to watch them? RedBull made it so easy to be a fan, the money grab this year is killing the whole vibe.
  • 19 8
I still watch because I support the sport and the riders. Yea you may think you’re sticking it to the man (discovery) but you’re also f*cking over the riders as well by not tuning in.
  • 2 1
 i wish i hadn't its sooo depressing
  • 19 1
i don't think i've missed a race in 10-12 years up until this year. now i haven't seen a single one. part of that is i'm putting my foot down about any more subscriptions, i'm tired of that life. part of it is my wife already pays for Discovery+ yet somehow we got shafted. part of it is watching semi's has given me the same level of joy as watching the race previously. part is, i don't have that amount of time to dedicate to sitting on a couch on any given weekend. no fantasy league, to which, i didn't even care about prizes, but it made it easy to see results and maybe look into riders who i didn't know about who seemed to be doing surprisingly well. all those together have made me kinda check out. i've resigned myself to catching highlights and looking at instagram and youtube vlogs.
  • 4 4
I watched the first round via the free live stream. But the shithouse production quality (bad direction/poor camera work), shithouse format and shithouse commentary sealed the deal. Have not even bothered following EWS, DH or XC at all this year outside of Instagram.
  • 4 0
@sino428: I’m not “sticking” it to anyone, just can seem to get into the new package. It’s simply an “ease of use” thing for me.
  • 1 0
@powaymatt: sorry, it it seemed liked your comment came off that way. For me personally I still try to support the sport and the riders, even if the coverage isn’t quite as good as it was.
  • 1 2
yeh I used to watch from freecaster days onward & havent this year. i;ll watch the worlds as its on BBC. but i wont be paying to watch ongoing. MTB became expensive enough already
  • 1 0
@sino428: the riders aren’t getting a pay raise and they have been pretty vocal about it (Bernard Kerr, Dean Lucas, Dak Norton to name a few). Not sure how it’s screwing the riders over when discovery/gcn+ are using them as a product instead of a partner
  • 1 0
@shandtke: the riders main source of income is sponsors. They get paid to essentially advertise products. The more exposure they get, the more companies will pay them. Less people watching races = less exposure, which will eventually lead to less money from sponsors.
  • 1 0
I'm enjoying watching, and I think they're doing a pretty good job. Course coverage is better than Redbull was, but the commentary isn't Rob - though it's fine. The cost of GCN+ is less than one evening at the pub.

Watched every race last years(Thanks to Red Bull!), but dind`t watch a single one this year. This is sad...
  • 3 0
Been riding DH since very early '00s, watching Earthed etc. until Freecaster came and I could watch it all live... And it's been like that up until this year. Didn't watch a single race this year. I'm tired of all the different subscription services and I am definitely not going to pay another $20 or more per month just to watch 5 or 6 events per year - and that's just for 1 sport, because everything seems to be on a different platform nowadays, so I'd have to get another one for MMA and another for FIA car races... this is BS, I prefer to go for a ride and spend this money for a lift ticket in my local bike park.
  • 26 0
Soooo its basically $30 to watch the Worlds. Add in the month hiatus in the World Cup Tour which is money down the schitter for the monthly CGN+ subscription and im paying $55 this month yo watch one race …..Fort Bill. The 1199 Canadian Open at Crankworks was free via RedBull and had a couple good announcers….
  • 8 1
This is the consequence of "growing the sport." Everyone wants to grow the sport until it gets bought by a conglomerate and commodified.
  • 6 0
@Dogl0rd: fair… I actually don’t have an issue with paying to watch. Hence why ive signed up. What I just don’t understand is why don’t they have one continuous platform with one fee for the duration of the entire downhill series. Is it too much to make it easy for people to follow and access the Content?
  • 9 0
@Dogl0rd: imagine one platform that hosted all the world cup races, world championships, all the Crankworx DH and slope style, respective national DH championships, manufacturer teams produced content, interviews, special interest, tech talk, podcasts, product reviews etc….. like a 24/7 mountain bike channel of sorts. Put EVERYTHING in one place.

Design a rock solid playform, increase video quality and make the offering a legitimate, comprehensive product like …..,just like one of the major sports. $100 for the season - Then you can start to build a brand around paying to watch mountain biking
  • 13 1
$9.49CAD/mo, I subscribed the day before Lenzerheide for one month which got my that race + Leogang and VDS. If I subscribe on Saturday (and use VPN for UK/EU region) that gets me World Champs + Vallnord and I will need to do a third month for Snowshoe + MSA.

Total cost = $28.47CAD for the season. Not free but not that bad. I refuse to even consider FloBikes/FloSports whatever it is.

@f00bar: for me in Canada, I like GCN+ because of the native app on my Samsung TV (plus iOS devices and obviously web browser for computers). I don't want to deal with a VPN on my TV or at my LAN level to use Eurosport across all these devices.
  • 2 0
@f00bar: just checked and could not find any of the Worlds there, maybe I'm looking wrong but there's only replays from Woolongong or Glasgow that I could find.
Their search feature seems effd up, you type in uci or glentress and nothing comes up but uci is definitely in the title of several vids on the page you linked to.
Maybe you have to be logged in to find this, do you see links to upcoming streams when you are logged in?
I'd have assumed they'd put those up to entice people to join and watch but I could be wrong in this.

 From TVNZ:

Unfortunately TVNZ does not have the rights to UCI cycling so this isn't available on our channels and platforms.

I'll see if I can find out who the NZ rights holder here is, perhaps it's Sky. We've heard from some viewers that TVNZ has been listed as the broadcaster on cycling-related website, but we're unsure of where this information has come from!
  • 1 0
UCI site doesn't give any further information. It looks like the best option for New Zealand will be the UCI YouTube page.

@SteveMcDonald2: Thanks for your work on finding that out, Sky has had it the last 3-4 years so its disappointing that nobody has picked it up. Will be great if its on Youtube

@SteveMcDonald2: I got that response from tvnz as well, live chat with sky - no luck either, waiting on a reply from uci but I don't think that'll happen.
@handynzl: how do you login to gcn+ when using a vpn? I've tried but it won't login, could it be I need to use somewhere more bizarre or remote?
  • 4 0
@p0rtal00: I use Express VPN so I turn that on (after selecting the country I want (as said earlier I used Sweden and Italy)), then open GCN+ and just use the normal login details. I have done this both in an iPad and on my work computer (running Chrome browser). I've done this before for some geoblocked racing in the past for GCN+, and using UK as my "location".

Just checked as an Italian...still just a splash page...

Well knock me over with a Boxxer fork...it says EXCLUDING Sweden and Italy etc...right, lets live in the UK then and see what that does...

...it freaking works, that what it does!

@handynzl: Nice. It looks like its free to view in NZ on the UCI youtube page too
  • 1 0
@handynzl: then I guess it was my bad listening to a youtuber that said nord vpn was good, when I do the same thing with it and then try to login to GCN+ it just says there was an error, I may try a few more other odd countries and if not then get express instead. Annoying waste of money but at least it was discounted a lot. Cheers for showing it can work as I was a bit pissed Smile
  • 1 0
@JNZ: Yes,saw that on the Cycling NZ facebook page suggesting to go via UCI YouTube channel.
  • 1 0
@p0rtal00: (In reference to you being pissed) Nothing wrong with having a beer or three - just don't drink and drive...drink and mtb, well that's just funny....

You may need to clear cookies as well (yum yum yum). If you've had GCN open prior to VPN from your actual location, close your browser window down to let it clear the cache, then set your VPN, then open a new browser (not a tab), and then login via a Google search for "GCN plus" - one of the links shown says "login" and use that one.

I had to do a Capcha on one login, but the other couple of times was OK. I think the Capcha was after clearing cookies.
  • 1 0
@handynzl: I did have a rather long and probably very uninteresting conversation with one of my bikes coming home from a very drunken party if that counts.
Thx for the info I'll give that a try.
  • 1 0
@JNZ: I'm pissed that I paid for a GCN+ sub and thie support numpties want me to upgrade/clear caches/reinstall etc rather than acknowleding it's geoblocked

Not keen on paying for a VPN as well.

So disappointed with GCN right now.
  • 1 0
@Wilm: Just looked at the uci youtube and found this
www.youtube.com/@ucichannel/streams
doesn't appear to be geolocked at the mo
  • 1 0
@p0rtal00: This page isn't available. Sorry about that.

Try searching for something else.
  • 1 0
@lesoudeur: it does the same thing when I use a bookmark, to fix I typed uci into youtube and using that link it works for me.
  • 1 0
@p0rtal00: @Wilm @handynzl @SteveMcDonald2 well after all that and being blocked on the UCI Youtube page it turns out Sky had it on Sky sports pop up 1 anyway.

Nothing on their TV guide showing it as upcoming. Pain in the ass
  • 1 0
@JNZ: You are kidding me. F sake. That makes me even more frustrated.
  • 1 0
@SteveMcDonald2: Tell me about it. Glad its over with TBH and back to GCN+ for Andorra
  • 2 0
@JNZ: considering their online chat did not know this I'm just effin frustrated at their incompetence
  • 1 0
 @p0rtal00: Agree. Ridiculous
  • 11 1
Unpopular opinion: To everyone complaining, correct me if I’m wrong, but in Canada, wasn’t worlds on FloSport last year as well? Redbull didn’t cover worlds. Seems like it’s hardly GCN+ and Discovery’s fault.
  • 2 0
 It was flosports last year
  • 2 0
We weren't paying for Red Bull last year. Two subscriptions.
  • 5 2
@jeffpegan: I get that part. I pay for GCN+, and I wasn’t happy about it at first. But I think the coverage is better than Redbull had. The commentary is obviously worse(Rob= ), but I feel like it’ll get better over time. Paying for worlds, I did last year. Haven’t decided if I will this year yet. In the end, I don’t think this change of World Cup coverage is the worst.
  • 1 0
@uncleric09: I don't have any issues with the product. I think Ric is better than most of the other commentators and Cedric is growing on me. It just would have been nice if they could have bundled the whole season with one paid provider.
  • 1 0
RB covered worlds in more countries. Now GCN didnt even fight for those
  • 12 0
What the hell is FloSports?! I give up. Now get off my lawn!!!
  • 3 0
I did watch some segment of the FloSports for the US Nationals DH race several weeks back. The commentary was orders of magnitude better than Discovery+, the announcer was much more knowledgeable with rider background. This is sad considering FloSports has a fraction of the budget of Discovery.
  • 9 0
Flosports in Canada? Sheeeeeeit. Already got a GCN+ account for the rest of the season. Maybe Flosports and GCN+ could have a fight to the death, winner gets broadcast rights..
  • 8 0
I just checked and I can confirm that my GCN+ account here in the US DOES show a bunch of World Championship MTB content when I use my VPN to switch to a UK based server. No details on the various listings yet though.
  • 2 0
 Good looking out.

Does anyone know if you use a VPN on phone/tablet, will GCN+ cast to a Roku not on VPN?
  • 2 0
@BigHerm: my iPad will cast anything to my AppleTV. I don’t know about Roku, though.
  • 1 0
@BigHerm: It Should. I have done that in the pass with Redbulls coverage the last few years.
  • 1 0
@BigHerm: got a recommendation for a vpn for an iPhone? I have gcn+ and want to watch on there since I pay for it but I’ve never used a vpn before.
  • 10 0
Im waiting for someone to post the real way to watch
  • 2 0
I watched the last world cups on tiz-cycling.io Quality is not perfect, but it is free so it works for me.
  • 5 0
 Fly to Scotland.
  • 11 5
Fantastic to see Claire Balding commentating for the BBC. That womans sporting knowledge knows no bounds and when coupled with her sparkling personality the UK is in for a real treat.
  • 4 0
What? Sporting knowledge? She should stick to equestrian
  • 4 0
@calumjsmith: might have been a bit of sarcasm. She 'commentated' the BMX at the Commonwealth and ruined that event for me as well. She must have something on one of the high ups at the BBC.
  • 3 0
 Please be joking
  • 2 0
I went to school with a lad who looks like Claire Balding. Im guessing Ed Leigh will be on the mic.
  • 1 0
@scruff0372: is he the guy who does the snowboarding and that at the winter Olympics? I don't hate him.
  • 1 0
@alexhyland: yes. I'm hoping it will be him too. Claire Balding is an odd choice.
  • 1 0
@scruff0372: I really hope not, he hasn't got a clue. He'll probably start talking about loam when they're on the motorway.
  • 1 0
Well they cannot use Jimmy Saville anymore.
  • 5 0
I joked 6 months ago that it would be easier for me to fly from the States to Scotland to see this LIVE than it would be to watch it via VPN + streams. Ok, that may be hyperbole. I gotta deal with TSA, Aer Lingus, and a train, and the beautiful Fort William weather this weekend, but my point stands. This broadcast schedule is a joke.
  • 4 0
For the first time in so many years, I don't get excited anymore. I haven't watched one race this year. I used to not be able to sleep because I was so excited waiting to hear, "LOOK AT THE TIME!" Rob Warner is greatly missed. UCI jacked this one up big time. I wonder how many people will lose interest in our sport because of this? I'd rather put my money towards a local DH race entry than Discovery+. Just when DH was growing, they stop it. Oh well....on to AMA outdoors!
  • 4 0
This is so confusing. Which country do I need to VPN to in order to get a good commentary, and live?! I don't mind paying 20 bucks but what an absolute shitshow.

From tuning into pretty much every single DH race over the last 10 years to 0 so far, thanks UCI, way to "grow the sport".
  • 1 0
No shit - and most of us knew this would happen. Its like yr friends bringing a cake over for your birthday but its just the ingredients and happy f*cking birthday - you have to bake the thing. I still don't see at all how Discovery (etc) is 'bringing this to the world' - literally every one of my DH buds has not watched anything this year b/c everyone's too pissed & confused on what the hell to do. The riding is still fine, the riders rule but damn...Disc. just made this far more difficult to watch. Why the hell didn't they just have world cups stay w/ the full GCN (whatever) package w/ the 1000's of redo's and changes they made this year. If they could physically receive the fury (confusion, hate, anger) of what fans are going through just watch a f*cking race -they would think again about how they've done everything.
  • 6 0
For Germany it is only the road race that is shown by ZDF, all MTB events are GCN+ and Eurosport 1/2 @edspratt
  • 6 0
Never missed any world cup or champs before all this annoying shit went down. RB, for all it's quirks, was the best.
  • 4 2
If you’re in the us you would have missed last years world champs because red Bull didn’t broadcast it. Flosports did www.pinkbike.com/news/how-to-watch-the-les-gets-world-championships.html
  • 3 0
I have the GCN+ I share with some friends, so I'm not whinging on paying. I would have preferred to pay RedBull for a small membership over GCN+. GCN coverage is ok, not bad, not great. Commentators do feel like knock-offs (other than Bart on XC still). But I still find this jumping around GCN, ESPN, RedBull or whatever to simply watch a literal handfull of DH in 2023 as ludicrous. I don't really care THAT much and if it gets more inconvenient I'll simply just stop watching. I'd rather just ride.
  • 1 0
its pretty disappointing to have to pay for GCN+ but then not get to watch world champs.
  • 3 0
What in the flying monkey tits is wrong with this s&:t?! The UCI is absolutely ruining racing! Please redbull, start your own series and bury these hack jobs. I bought the GCN membership, which the quality is garbage in every way and can’t even watch worlds?! F You! But, somehow, a small organization like Downhill Southeast can make great coverage of there events free on YOUTUBE?? madness
  • 3 0
I don’t understand why Redbull doesn’t start their own race series.
I don’t mean crankworx, I mean funding a dedicated race series such as (Redbull international downhill) they are such a giant, and rob so beloved, that I feel it world be worth it. Hell i converted to drinking Redbull from monster if only to support a company that supports riders. They could even crowd fund prize money. It has happened in certain E-sports and has dramatically increased payout. They could have the winning ride of every year dawn a Jersey know as the (Redbull) jersey. With a Redbull color scheme and the number 1.
  • 7 1
bring back freecaster & Rob being off his face commentating...
  • 1 1
As long as he is allowed to keep swiping Pagey's beer - bring it on!
  • 3 1
If you're from a country like me where the rights-carrier is only showing ANY interest in XC mtb, and solely because there's a road cyclist taking part in the race, and therefore (live) broadcast zero of any other events, this should get you downhill:

tiz-cycling.io/main

(Don't get me wrong, XC is rad, but disregarding the sport as a whole for years while we've got some great Dutch female athletes at the top-end is weak. So is buying the rights and not broadcasting it.. (DH))
  • 3 0
ZDF is for sure just not gonna broadcast it, but we get to pay for them in germany ...it's called GEZ.....and then you get to see the repetition of a repetition and the magnificent "ZDF Fernsehgarten"
  • 2 0
And you can watch "Kiwi" (a female presenter of mature age) groping men. :-)

ZDF? Maybe in the online offer?
Can not imagine that WC runs regularly on TV.
  • 1 1
It is shown on GCN+ in Germany.
  • 5 0
conveniently, this also doubles as a "how NOT to watch the the 2023 World Champs" article.
  • 5 1
At this point it's all for the shareholders and not for the fans. Loving the corporate greed, keep it up UCI. Way to go to "grow" the sport.
  • 3 1
There will probably be a live stream on the uci site as well. World champs has been setup like this for years, even when red bull had the rights. I believe it is because the uci sell the world champs rights separately and if you want one event you have to buy them all. For example, sbs in Australia broadcast a lot of road cycling but, if they want the road cycling world champs rights they need to purchase the whole package. What we see on Pinkbike these days is surface level reporting with comments making negative assumptions.
  • 1 0
EDIT: It's on SBS On Demand in glorious heavily compressed 720p.

---

Is anyone showing it in Australia? Just looked up the SBS guide, and can't see anything. Can't see anything on Kayo either. Is the UCI site the most likely option? Or should I be investigating VPN options now?
  • 1 0
@bykeco: sometimes you just go to the uci site and its streaming there
  • 2 0
I just checked. If you pay a subscription (6,99€ per month) to GCN+ 5th of August, you get Words, Valnord and Loudenville DH races plus all other cycling races.
Continue your subscription one month and you get Les Gets and Snowshoe.

You miss MSA if you don't extend your subscription one month. That's only shitty thing because you only get MSA for that money.

So for under 21€ you get all the Worlds races and five WC DH races.
  • 2 0
Exactly, I'll sign up on Friday in order to make sure I get Loudenville for €7, probably just watch semis+highlights for the US rounds due to the time difference.

kind of sucks that i paid for the GCN+ subscription and i won't be able to watch world champs without paying again. it would be like watching the entire nfl season then the super bowl is on pay-per-view. UCI YOU SUCK.
  • 2 0
Restricting the video has killed the exposure, like it used to. Teams cannot show more than x seconds, Cathro cannot show us the side-by-side ghost footage. Experiment has been repeated and the results are replicated, interpretation is clear.

BBC is showing a lot of coverage, including gravity and XC. EXCEPT that I do not see Women's Elite XC listed? Only Men;s Elite XC?

it's listed here Saturday 12th, not on the main TV broadcast but on the online services. Curious thing with this list is that it doesn't list elite mens?

Does anyone know if we be able to watch replays or at least extended highlights on YouTube or some other widely known site the next day? The time difference is tough enough but FloSports SUUUUUCKS. UCI and GCN replays are so much better.
  • 3 0
Just checked NA GCN+ and upcoming races does not list the world cup. Well this sucks so glad I ponied up for the GCN+ subscription
  • 2 0
VPN time. I pay for Hola VPN, but even trying some browser stuff in Opera or something else should work.
  • 4 0
Cool, seems like VPN to BBC to hopefully catch Warner broadcasting is the move.
  • 2 0
I don't think Rob's ever done the BBC commentary, has he?
Pagey perhaps?
  • 2 0
@chakaping: He said to BK at Hardline that he'd offered his services to the BBC gratis. It's probably too much to ask that someone at the corporation would've checked his credentials and given him the gig though. Much more likely that they'll pay someone who knows sweet FA about the sport to do it instead.
  • 1 0
@chakaping: in Bernard Kerr’s hardline video, Rob said he reached out to the BBC and said he would offer his commentating services for free. No word on if they went for it. One could dream
  • 1 0
 Hopefully, hopefully. Everything crossed etc.
  • 1 0
@alexhyland: Rob's just confirmed on his instagram that he won't be there. It hasn't stopped the cheeky bastards at the UCI from using his voice on their advert for the Worlds though.

@commental: aw bummer man. F*ck the UCI obvs.
  • 6 0
 Ummmm how about no
  • 5 1
I don't even watch DH anymore simply because I have no idea how to. So dumb.
  • 3 0
So in NA we get to watch Track Walks, WynTV, LSD, Vital Raw, read the results on PB, Watch Winning Run POVs and WynTV afterwards. FUCI
  • 1 0
I forgot to add Course Previews and pit bitz. A sad state of affairs.
  • 1 0
I will say this. I've spent the best part of this season moaning about the abysmal quality of the world cup coverage. But I guarantee BBC is worse. They just seem to throw some old bloke in front of the mic with literally no knowledge of the sport who sits there and reads stats of a sheet.
  • 1 0
BBC and tories. Spot the difference.
  • 2 0
Dang what a bunch of loser and whiners!
Buy GCN+ and get a good VPN and watch all the world coverage you want.
I had Flobike once but much prefer the price and content I get from GCN
  • 1 0

How to watch - except for list what day semi / finals is (assuming that's still the format?). Its obviously Sat or Sun but...wouldn't that be one of the 1st things to list here?

Or is it today? Can't even find an article on PB to say...

Watched the Worlds on SuperSport in South Africa... What an absolute dog & pony show...
The commentary was atrocious; camera angles and extent of track coverage dismal; and to top it all, many of the elite men runs were not actually shown... Hatton, Kolb, Greenland, etc...
  • 2 0
Flosports WTF. Why do I pay for ESPN+, hulu, disney, HBOmax (that doesn't include discovery!), netflix??? This shit is out of hand. I should cancel all if it and just watch youtube highlights and forget about TV.
  • 2 0
So even if I bought the GCN app subscription I couldn't watch this? Going to have to figure out how to get BBC iplayer to work for me in France.

It's showing the downhill finals for men, women, juniors etc, as multiple upcoming shows on Discovery+ when I log in (UK based), so assume they'll be showing it!

I have not watched any downhill races this year. I used to watch them all. I have not even watched any highlights or WynTV. I am finding that I don't really miss it & have been doing other things with my time.
  • 8 0
 Not smoking though eh?
  • 2 0
Wtf is flo sports? Sounds like a feminine hygiene product.... you know, one where on the tv ad they'd show a chick riding a bike then sticking her legs out to the sides.

It's easier to watch the Dodgeball Championships on ESPN 8 (The Ocho) than the Cycling Champs. I remember once I was at the airport watching with Lance Armstrong.

ANYONE ELSE feel ripped off by GCN for only a handful of selected mountain bike races?
I feel like I have been played. NO National title races is complete BS.

Haven't Discovery sent you a press release about what they're covering and when (and maybe where) @edspratt?
  • 2 0
Sadly no, they haven't sent me anything about what they plan to cover. From looking at GCN+ this morning there seems to be at least all the big MTB races there although I can't say if this is available to people outside the UK.
  • 3 0
 @edspratt: bloody amateurs
  • 2 0
@edspratt: Nothing listed in Canada on GCN+. I have not checked but if it is similar to the Tour De France, which was also streamed by Flo in Canada, routing through a VPN to a UK location should allowed me to watch the GCN+ broadcast.
  • 1 0
We have just been told that GCN+ coverage is only available in select European regions. We have added an update to the article detailing where this is available.

@bikeridingaled: I don't see anything about Ft. Bill at that link.

ESPN in México????? ha ha ha good joke
  • 2 1
I shall hope my mtb comment angel leaves a link to watch just like the other DH races this year. If you are reading this, thank you.
  • 4 1
At least there is not a silly semi-finals for DH Worlds
  • 3 0
 Crankworx>>>>>>>>>uci
  • 2 0
Gave up, I miss redbull. I just watch whatever highlights post on YouTube otherwise…..don’t care anymore.
  • 2 1
Top comment says it all, gonna be interesting time in some uci board meeting when the viewing figures, an sponsorship revenue year end stuff happens
  • 1 0
Hopefully I will be able to figure something out to watch the Champs. Besides the DH at CW i haven’t watched a finals yet this year. First time in over 10 years.
  • 1 0
I paid for GCN+ this season, not interested in setting up yet another account with another streaming platform to watch one race. Highlights will have to do for this one.
  • 1 0
Again, quit yer whining! Get GCN+ and a VPN, change your country to something like Great Britain then watch all the world championships!
  • 2 0
So I paid for a subscription in Canada to watch races but it doesn’t include some?! Really frustrating
  • 1 0
World champs is always different broadcast right. It was the same last year. Get a vpn and say you are in Europe and you can still watch it on GCN+ app
  • 1 0
and. due to a different streaming service-test (join) ist 12 month 4 free.
  • 1 1
The better the coverage got over the years the more we ask/demand of it. If you really must watch it, figure out the hacks and make it happen. Otherwise who does all this Karen commentating serve?
  • 1 0
Way to watch free in the US if you are already paying for GNC+ - download ProtonVPN, you get a Netherlands server for free - elite finals seems to be available.
  • 2 0
Looks like it will be ok for France with GCN+
  • 1 0
 C'est marqué 'France TV".
Commenté par Sophie Davant et Laurent Romejko? Smile

 Merde en Etats Unis
  • 1 1
 @suspended-flesh: y'a un souci gros?
  • 1 0
 @danstonQ:

Avec le TV, oui. Je ne parle pas Francais, vraiment. Pardon moi.
  • 1 1
@danstonQ: je suis allé vérifier sur gcn+ il y a bien les events annoncé
  • 2 3
So the BBC have the rights here in the UK but not even one spec of information on the Beeb website.
No category for the sport.
No entries in the "cycling" calendar.
The usual abysmall crap from the BBC.

13:15-16:45 - BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app - men's and women's downhill mountain bike finals
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: Yep - not sure what this person is on about!
  • 2 0
no way we'll be able to watch it on RAI
  • 1 0
Quindi mi sa che faccio un salto virtuale in UK con una VPN in prova 30 giorni (poi annullo e chiedo il rimborso) e vedo la diretta dalla BBC
  • 2 0
So I paid up for GCN+ and I can't watch this..? Ugh
  • 1 0
Dude get a vpn. I just chose a European country and was able to watch on gcn app. On another note world champs broadcast was always like this. Redbull didn’t have broadcast rights for it back in the day either
  • 2 0
BBC I player is showing the DH live and for free Sat 13.45 GMT
  • 1 0
 My only hope, currently.

Saturday, 5 August

13:15-16:45 - BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app - men's and women's downhill mountain bike finals

free??? not according to all the threat of legal action letters on my doorstep
  • 1 0
@waxed: Will you be in on such and such a date? I have a license, but as a little experiment I neglected to tell them about a change of address. At least all those threatening letters over 2 years (without ever getting a visit) gave me a feeling that I was actually getting something for my money.
  • 3 0
 VPN it is then.
  • 3 3
FFS let RedBullTV do it ! Cant take the sh!t anymore my beloved sport is ruined. If we cant watch races we cant progress ourselves theyr ruining our sport!
  • 2 0
Great can’t wait for SBS to F&CK this up again
  • 2 0
UCI, stick to enforcing sock lengths please.
  • 1 0
Whoever cut the fragmented broadcast deals at UCI should be skinned and dipped in saltwater.
  • 1 0
I wonder if we see a huge decline in mountain biking because discovery made it difficult to watch the WC
  • 1 0
Free mountain bike media for all please and thank you. I want all my friends to be able to see the magic of mtb!
  • 1 0
Is it free though!? Hope so
  • 4 0
In Poland it's free, but they will not broadcast it anyway, since they only know XC Smile So as usual, you get nothing for free. This time however, you cannot watch it even if you would like to pay for it, which is just another level Smile
  • 3 0
yes its free but only because you are so hopeful
  • 2 0
@lkubica: VPN works wonders but its good to have it ready to go the day before just in case.
  • 2 0
 @mtbmaniatv: VPN to where?
  • 1 0
@lkubica: If your country doesn't stream if, you can use a VPN platform to pretend you're watching in a different country. I used to use "Epic" browser, but unsure what the good ones are now.
  • 2 0
@mtbmaniatv: Yes, but: VPN to where?
  • 4 0
@teoleoni: The UK? BBC will be covering the event live and it will be available on their iplayer. Warner has said that he's offered his services to them (for free) so there may even be good commentary, although knowing the BBC they'll probably use someone who knows nothing about the sport instead.
  • 1 0
@commental: last year wasn't it Rik and Reece Wilson?
  • 1 0
@Maxcommencemal: I don't know. I watched it on Red Bull last year.
  • 1 0
@teoleoni: I tried VPNing to France and the races showed up in the GCN+ app on iPad.
  • 1 0
@fudgedredd: I did the same thing. And worked great
  • 1 0
Brilliant, Czech TV chose to show only track cycling
  • 1 0
Some dummies about to be spat out
  • 1 3
Why, you have live coverage of every event of the champs for free, plus coverage on GCN+ as well.
Luxury or what.
  • 2 0
 So how to watch?
  • 1 0
 try eurosport player
  • 1 0
  • 1 0
I have discovery and its not great.....
  • 1 1
Ireland not there - but I am assuming we can watch on GCN+ - i see it on the listing for me
  • 1 0
