Tree Branch Pierces Isabeau Courdurier's Foot at EWS-E Valberg

After not finishing EWS-E Valberg last weekend Isabeau Courdurier has shared an update after she caught a tree branch off track.

During the race Isabeau says she was slightly outside on a turn and happened to catch a sharp tree branch that went on to break through her shoe and straight into her foot. Isabeau has already had surgery and luckily she says that there are no broken bones or tendons.

I am sharing this because it can happen to any of us racing or riding in Enduro! I went a little too outside in a turn and my front wheel lifted a sharp branch. I did not crash. The branch perforated my shoes (upper part) and foot entirely. Absolutely don’t swipe right if you don’t want to see it!

I have to say that it is very unlucky and that it could have happened anywhere. I was in very good hand with the safety team in Valberg and I can’t thank them enough for the help. I had surgery yesterday night to remove it and get rid of the unicorn foot. It went well and apparently I have no broken bones and tendons which is a miracle!

I’m a gun nut being I enjoy shooting and hunting. It’s not the gun that’s dangerous. It’s the person holding the gun. The vast majority of the gun violence in the us is done so by people that can’t legally own a gun or purchase one. Banning guns ain’t gonna fix our problem.

 @darkstar66: most of these acts of violence you’re going to hear about a small singularities statistically. The shooter in Texas shot 19 kids and 2 adults. He did legally purchase the gun used. I’m referring to the gun violence that takes place in Chicago, New York , Detroit. These major metro areas have some of the strictest gun laws yet have some of the highest rates of gun violence amongst convicted felons that can’t legally own a gun. In fact within the last two weeks another attempted mass shooting in a mall was thwarted by a civilian that was legally carrying a hand gun.

Civilians with guns aren’t always a bad thing. 3 people still lost their lives but the actions of an individual that had a means to respond saved many more lives. If there’s any pushback they shoot themselves.

it’s a pet hate of mine when people cut trails and leave pointy branches sticking out of trees rather that taking them off smooth with the tree trunk. Was this a contributory factor in this case?

 Agreed 100%. I was walking my dog with my wife and my wife stepped through a gap someone cut in the bush at the sidewalk to access the crosswalk. They had left a sharp stick at the edge and it took a big gauge out of her shin. Looked worse than most pedal strikes I've had.

 I've had a stick go through my shoe, through my sock and cut my foot in the same way hers did with one big exception, I didn't get impaled like her. Super scary. She is a freaking trooper. I hope she heals up well and avoids infection.

 In about 1999/2000 Nelson nationals (NZ) I saw a guy carried off on a stretcher on his stomach with something like this coming out his bike shorts. Later at the hospital ran into him outside sitting on one bum cheek having a cigarette. But this is pretty god damn hardcore

 Well, bike industry is simply ignoring the fact that at mtb, your foot is first in the line of impact at high speed. Modern mtb shoes are like skate shoes with no protection whatsoever. Yeah but they are breathable, I give you that!

 My uncle broke the big toe off his right foot by hitting a tree stump on a dirt bike, while wearing heavy motocross boots. He wasn't even going that fast. Weird things can and do happen while riding in wooded areas, not to mention the desert.

 I've been de-biked by a large limb that I couldn't see due to angle and sun angle. It was exactly like a joust, off the back of the bike I went speared in the chest -- luckily I was wearing armor that day.

Another time, I had a vine I couldn't see (again lighting and hauling ass) grab me by the neck and yank me off the back- it literally clotheslined me.

 Similar thing happened to me on my motorbike, the extra weight of the bike definitely puts your feet and legs at a higher risk of injury compared to a light mtb.
Would it have happened on a mountainbike? I honestly don't think it would have.
