The 2023 downhill World Championships are now fully underway as the Junior riders take to the updated course to make their way into tomorrow's finals live broadcast.  Aimi stomping down the mountain! Barr might not have the sponsorship resources of RedBull or Monster, but would be awesome if they did her a helmet sponsor deal

It’s a shame that only 15 junior women qualify. That may have made sense in the past, but with so many girls coming to race now it should be at least 30. All other classes qualify everyone this year, so I hope the nations/UCI are watching and will expand it in future

I'm just guessing, but I think the number of qualifiers might be set well in advance of the submission deadline for entries. Last year they only had 22 Junior Women entered. This year they had 32, and I agree they could have easily expanded the field for the finals.

So many girls coming to race?

I don't know. If you look at the times Smile after the 15th the difference from the first starts to be embarrassing.
Be aware of what you wish for...If the UCI notice that, they may think to apply some kind of 120% time rule or a minimum UCI points to participate at World Champs.

They are actually taking 30 junior women for this race.

@nkuhn7: Thanks for pointing that out. UCI's start list for qualifying said "Riders ranked 1-15 qualify for finals."
And yet, you are correct: The start list for the finals includes every woman who completed a qualifying run.

Thanks again.

@Bibico: I believe this was due to a crash. Everyone on course during the crash got automatically qualified? I'm not sure on the details.
  • 3 1
the 15th place junior woman on that quali list is 39+ seconds gap to 1st . To get that much of a gap in male juniors you have to look down to 47th place
  • 1 0
@Yerts: If I'm not mistaken there were 11 riders on the course when another rider in the last sector (might have) had a crash. After they cleared the course the remaining riders did their runs and then the 11 who had been red-flagged repeated their runs. I believe they were required to post times to qualify.

[The rider who apparently crashed - Clarissa Carzolio - was having a great run and her time through 4 splits ended up 6th fastest. She's the Italian U19 DH champ.]

@flowisforpussies: They do have a rule about this but it really requires a super slow time to go into effect:
4.3.003
Any rider whose time being 100% slower of that of the first established time is listed in the results as DNF (did not finish) and is not awarded any points. This rule is applied for qualifying round and finals.
Under exceptional circumstances, the maximum allowed time limit for finishing may be altered during the race. This decision is made by the president of the commissaires’ panel after consultation with the technical delegate.

So they all should qualify ?

Damm! Pinkerton has been on a mission last couple of rounds, like to see him get his 1st winSmile

Is Nathan Pontvianne officially a Pinkbike team member? UCI lists him on the PB team, but I don't know if I've ever heard Ben Cathro mention him in his race preview videos.

At any rate, fantastic quali runs by both Aimi and Nathan. Congratulations to both.

Hey Brits- which one do you think will have better coverage, BBC (via VPN) or GCN+? Happy to pay for GCN+ if it’s way better. Thanks from the Yanks!
  • 1 0
Go BBC - it can't be worse than Rick and Cedric on GCN
  • 1 0
I have gcn+ in the USA and it’s not showing world championship. Only Flosports in USA unless you use a vpn.
  • 1 0
@dagon2112: BBC + VPN seems like the ticket. If ppl are cheapasses, NordVPN and others have a 30 day trial.
  • 4 0
@Flashman2008: it might have claire balding, so...
  • 2 0
I can't find any Champs MTB coverage listed on the BBC calendar: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/calendar

Can someone point me in the right direction?
  • 1 0
@dagon2112: Same in New Zealand, VPN to a UK location and it does appear.
  • 2 0
@dansharpe: UCI is advertising that the broadcast will be live in NZ on Youtube. Doesn't appear to be any coverage of the qualifying though
  • 1 0
it's live streamed on the UCI youtube channel - unless someone has the rights. That's where to watch from NZ anyway
  • 1 0
I tried to watch the BBC coverage in the past and it was pretty crap. They had one presenter who knew their stuff and one who knew nothing. I guess it’s to cater to people who know nothing about mountain biking. She spent most of the time asking the knowledgeable presenter questions and making weird observations. It might be different this year but I’m still going to pay for GCN+. Better the devil you know etc.

Pinkerton on the case! And 62 kph? I know there's a motorway on the track, but still, that is moving :wow:

 @bgoldstone: Thank you!
  • 1 0
@neimbc: but looks like you have to pay $30.00.
  • 2 0
@stunnanumma1: I've had good luck with the GCN+ app using the (free) Proton VPN app to access the US restricted content.
  • 2 0
@stunnanumma1: That sucks - anything better?
  • 1 0
@jamu-f: Are they broadcasting the World Champs? I know they do the regular wc events.
  • 1 0
@neimbc: Just checked and yes, they are broadcasting WC's
  • 2 0
 @jamu-f: Awesome. Thanks!

I'm watching Tandem Track Racing on BBC Sports Cycling page right now! God it's exciting!!

I used a London server via VPN to even see this. Hope to catch the DH but the site isn't all that easy to navigate at first glance.

Spoiler: England takes to Gold! Bloody Hell. 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps, PLEASE
  • 1 0
@jamu-f: this is def the way to go! BBC is kinda impossible to navigate, but if you use a VPN with GCN+ the world champs stuff is available (doesn't even show that its geo restricted from US)

glad to see so many south american riders in the upcoming leagues ..... oh wait!
