Neko Mulally Parts Ways with Intense Factory Racing

Neko Mullaly

Neko Mulally has announced he will be leaving the Intense Factory Racing Team.

Neko Mulally has been riding for Intense over the past three years and teammate of Aaron Gwin since moving to the YT Mob in 2017. With the racing rumours heating up as we reach the end of 2021, Neko announced his departure on Instagram saying:

bigquotesI’m grateful for my time on the INTENSE Factory Racing team and have made some awesome memories with everyone involved. It was an honor to ride for INTENSE, a brand with so much heritage in the sport of Downhill, driven by racing. I grew up watching INTENSE bikes win races, so it was rad to be able to race one myself. I want to say a special thanks to Aaron, who has owned and operated the team for the past three years and went far beyond being a great teammate. He is an amazing dude and I’m glad to call him one of my best friends. Best of luck to everyone in the future! Neko Mulally

bigquotesFor us a race team is like a family that not only lives and travels together, but also faces challenges and grows together. Neko has been a big part of this team and family, and we could not imagine anyone better who could have represented our team and sponsors. We wish Neko all the best, and look forward to seeing what he has planned next.INTENSE Factory Racing

bigquotesEveryone at INTENSE will miss Neko, he was a great ambassador for the brand and for mountain biking itself. During his time with INTENSE his focus, determination, enthusiasm and pure love of the sport was inspiring. Thank you for everything Neko, and good luck with your future plans. INTENSE

bigquotesNeko and I have been teammates for over half of my career. He's been with me through some of my best days and some of my absolute worst. The same is also true in reverse. It's crazy for me to sit back and think about how far we've both come in our careers and our lives since we first were teammates back in 2011. At that time, I hadn't won my first World Cup yet and Neko was still a Junior eating four plates of food every meal! There's been so many good memories since that time. I'm truly excited for Neko and his plans moving forward. I know that with both of our future plans, we'll be riding and hanging out probably more than ever, but I'm going to miss having him in the pits a lot. Thank you for everything you've done and contributed to this team the past three years dude. You've been an encouragement and constant inspiration to all of us. I hope you kill it with your new venture and I'll be seeing you soon! Aaron Gwin

There is no word yet about where Neko could be ending up, but we will keep you updated when we know more.

Intense where on their way back to DH glory with the Aussies on the team, not to mention the team being exciting to watch. Since then, not so much…

That’s what I was thinking as I was reading this.. that’s been one of my top 3 favorite teams to watch since I started watching racing!!

@wheelsmith: Saw a picture of him with current model Demo

@cky78: Colin Mullally is a Spec rider. I don't think that pic was Neko

As someone who loves awesome trails I hope Neko is riding for Caterpillar in 2022. Best of luck Neko, Dak and Luca!

Neko, Dak, and Luca are on the Carolina Cat DH team. Confirmed here.

Hopefully he gets back on parts he actually likes

 and out of Aaron's shadow.

@racecase: not sure Aaron casts enough shadow to cover the prolific Neko! The guy seems to do so much organising, digging, content creating, and is surely one of the most well-loved racers.

@racecase: you mean out of Aaron’s angelic glow?

@usedbikestuff: you mean out of Aaron's far right-wing fueled shadow? Not sure that dude knows people can see what he 'likes' on Twitter

You would be stupid to vote left if you had money @peterman1234:

@freeridejerk888: close but change stupid to “ignorant” and omit the last 4 words.

People that vote left think they are educated yet they do nothing to actually dig for truth. The problem is they cannot accept the fact that maybe they are wrong about something.

How do I know this? I used to be one. Masters Degree in Microbiology, high school AP Bio teacher. Member of teachers union. I started to have questions so I started to learn more and more. If you are not so close minded to admit that maybe, just maybe, you could be wrong about something and get over your own ego and start to really look at what’s going on you’d understand why men like Aaron are the way they are.

If you want some help. Watch “Planet of the Humans”, read “The Real Anthony Fauci” by Robert F Kennedy Jr. Study up on Thomas Sowell and really listen to his story. Watch all “Academy of Ideas” YouTube videos.

@peterman1234: I had to look for myself. Interesting stuff
  • 20 6
@swellhunter: interesting that you haven’t provided anything substantial that couldn’t be said the other way around.

“I went to college, eventually opened my eyes. Can’t believe I ever voted right. Here are some videos that play into confirmation bias”
  • 2 2
@swellhunter: better yet, watch “One Strange Rock” on Disney+
  • 7 8
@Davec85: it’s not so much that, as I think someone who’s antagonized by COVID safety measures and buys into conspiracies probably is not an ideal mentor/role model. You are free to think otherwise

Neko is an excellent racer and ambassador for DH. We know he is going to be around for a long time. Excited to see what team is lucky to have him!
  • 1 0
For local events or non WC he's a top dog but his results at the top level are not what Gwin wants. Last year he he didn't qualify twice then went 59,50,41,33. The year before 27,39,30,26. and in 2019 went 32,22,33, didn't qualify or injured twice, 28, and his best at 12. Aaron wants a team like the Syndicate.

Neko, Dak, and Luca sponsored by Carhartt Racing, Raisin Canes, and GG bikes.
  • 8 1
carhartt racing sounds like a dream come true. sick of athletic-wear focused mtb gear when all i want is clothing that takes the abuse
  • 2 0
GG doesn't have a DH bike unfortunately Frown
I still own one of their last GG/DH and is a badass rig.
  • 6 0
Canfield makes a DH bike though
  • 19 0
he's going to 951, costco pays better
  • 1 0
Imagine if that was actually the case, people would throw a fit hahahaha.
  • 17 2
 Neko-lai?
  • 13 0
Luka, Neko and Dakota's are probably going to ride Isak Leivssons bikes.
  • 2 0
That would be sick. Isak’s creations are wild.
  • 2 0
That'd be awesome, but I can't see Dak or Luca not on a factory team. They're too fast. They deserve the support. Neko deserves it too just for all the good he's done for the sport in the US and SE. Can't wait to see how it all plays out!
  • 6 0
@Alexanz1: factory isak is still a factory team
  • 13 1
Where Dak goes, Neko follows ... and the heart of US DH racing scene...
  • 24 0
Would be cool to see Neko Dak and Luca on the same team
  • 2 0
@Spoofed: I think this is what they are up to
  • 2 0
 @slayersxc17: think so too
  • 2 0
 @Spoofed: that would be awesome
  • 1 0
@nvranka: maybe sram tld with a frame sponsor. Except all three deserve a factory whip. What company has a spot for three riders?
  • 1 0
@slayersxc17: I wouldn’t know. Love to watch the races, but barely follow the scene anymore like I did 5 or so yrs ago.

Excited to see where everyone lands

Cheers

@nvranka: Maybe a new team with Neko as team manager/racer and canyon as the frame sponsor.
  • 4 0
 @slayersxc17: Canefield
  • 8 2
@Srfntrf: Are they the ones who make bamboo frames?
  • 3 0
@Srfntrf: the Easter eggs scattered around the internet point towards something with even more racing pedigree than Canfield. And I sure as shit hope it comes to fruition…

 @surfhard987: Ironhorse!!
  • 1 0
@Srfntrf: if the three Americans end up racing jedis next year, 2022 will be better than I could have hoped

 Everyone is going to Commencal

It all comes down to money and opportunity. Loyalty to a mtb brand has no real benefits
  • 4 0
They are on contract, for whatever the time frame is. The brand and the rider each have the choices to renew it or not.
  • 9 0
@ocApexx: "Brand loyalty has no benefits"
Greg Minnaar: "Hold my beer"
  • 3 4
He wasn't performing, so I'm guessing Intense 'parted' ways with Neko.
  • 7 0
@mi-bike: i think in Greg's case it's the other way around.
Greg loyalty has all the benifits.
  • 2 0
@mi-bike: I would assume Greg’s one of the top paid guys in the pits and likely has a lifetime job (like Peaty) if he wants when he’s done. Loyalty goes both ways.
  • 4 0
@SvenNorske: Wouldn’t they have let go Gwin too? he isn’t preforming either.
  • 1 0

He's riding an FTW built frame...(From Vitalmtb...)Neko Mulally Will Race Handmade Alloy DH Frames by Frank the Welder
Neko Mulally, #USDH heavy, has broken free of frame sponsor shackles and is hitting the 2022 World Cup downhill circuit on a frame he personally designed. He has enlisted the help of iconic frame fabricator, Frank the Welder, to take ideas from brain to computer to physical reality. Theres a full story on Vital. Huge oppurtunity for Frank....so stoked for him.

The change will probably be good for both Neko and Intense. Hate to see him go from IFR as he is such a good ambassador for the sport but that team needs a shake-up. Neko might benefit from a new program as well. With Neko leaving I'd be surprised if his brother (Logan) continues as Seth's mechanic. Logan seemed to compile most of the team's videos and that will be sorely missed in this YouTube world. My prediction is IFR will sign the young SoCal ripper Cole Suetos to the team to keep the expenses lower (he recently announced his Fox apparel deal).
  • 3 0
I think Brock (I think is his name) who did the videos for YT while Aaron was there, will rejoin with AG. They seemed to work well together. That was the time when YT had the killer World Cup team videos. And since there’s no Mob he’s free to go. But just my 0.02.
  • 2 0
@drjohn: Brock runs Aaron's Youtube, now. Makes sense he would handle IFR videos, now.
  • 4 0
I'd love to see Angel in Intense and back with Gwin, even though it'd be better for his career to stay with Commencal
  • 9 0
@charmingbob: he could be moving to another commencal team.
  • 2 0
 @grassmonkey: he surely will IMO

Don't be surprised if we see a reduction in factory teams. MFG's may just continue to move more of their dollars towards social media athletes.

With all his experience riding tons of DH bikes, Im sure he would be a great addition to any team looking to design new bikes...

I hope he can get back on a Trek, he rode so well on their bikes back in the day, I wonder what he could do on one of them now!

Luca, Neko, and Dak would be an awesome team

Saw him on a specialized e-bike a couple months ago and thought this was coming
  • 3 0
That’s probably just because Kanuga which he’s a big part uses specialized. For rentals and stuff. Wouldn’t read to much into him being seen on one.
