[Updated: Start Time 30 Minutes Earlier] Pinkbike Primer - Everything You Need to Know Ahead of Red Bull Rampage 2022

Oct 14, 2022 at 8:02
by Ed Spratt

Rampage is back for another year of huge freeride sends in the Utah desert. The stacked lineup of riders are already scoping out and building their lines as we see a return to the legendary venue of the 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 Rampages. Let's take a look at who has won this prestigious event in the past, the previous rounds at this venue, what the weather conditions look like for the 2022 edition of Red Bull Rampage.

The Venue

This year's event sees the competition head back to the venue used in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. With plenty of already established and classic lines on the mountain, riders won't have a fully clean slate to create their lines. Before we get to fully see the creativity of this year's riders let's take a look back at some of the sends from the past events at this venue.

2008

2010

2012

2013

What Happened at the 2021 Event

2021 saw the return of Rampage after a two-year break but despite this Brandon Semenuk secured a back-to-back win and his fourth title with a score of 89. Kurt Sorge just missed out on his fourth win with an 88.33. Both riders are back this year with Kurt looking to equal Brandon's record. We wouldn't count out a fifth elusive win for Semenuk, despite the fact that he'll be spending less hours on the hill than ever before.

bigquotesI am looking at this venue the same way I approach every year, look at the mountain and see what speaks to me. Realistically I will probably use some of the old stuff that I have used in the past because we will have less man hours this year.Brandon Semenuk

This year, Semenuk is in the championship points hunt in the ARA rally series he also competes in. He is currently sitting second in points. Semenuk was on-site in Virgin, Utah for the event registration and course walk, but then quickly boarded a flight to Michigan where he will be practicing and competing in the last race of the season that will ultimately determine the points championship. Upon completion of the race on Saturday, Semenuk will fly back to Utah for a rest day at which point he will rejoin his dig crew to complete the build and begin practicing his lines next week ahead of the main event. Can Semenuk win the rally championship and Red Bull Rampage in the same week? Only time will tell..

bigquotesI am stressed but so motivated! It’s my first Rampage and it’s so crazy to be here. It is hard to find a line, but I will make it happen. I am not looking to do something crazy, but rather stylish and flowy as I want to do tricks where I can.

Dylan Stark
bigquotesThis is the Red Bull Rampage I remember watching when I first got into mountain biking - I remember thinking holy &@#% that is insane, and now I am here doing it. It still doesn't feel real. Pinch me, it is a trip, a full circle moment. Seeing the canyon gap back then and its history - and seeing it today and thinking, wow, I think I am going to jump that canyon gap in my run. It is so wild. It doesn’t seem like many people are going this way, and we’ve got to hit the canyon gap for McGarry.

We are liking what we are finding, there is a lot of potential for original lines, and I am liking it a lot. The scariest part is the little skinny part up top - that freaks me out; I am scared of heights.... aah man it is scary. Even walking up there, I had sweaty palms the whole time.

Another crazy thing is I wouldn’t be here without Brandon Semenuk gifting me a bike about 4 or 5 years ago. I pretty much gave up on my BMX career and I was working at a job building electric bikes and my coworker mountain biked and he was like “you should get your bike back together and let’s go ride. I started doing some little cliff drops on it and then one day I had never met or talked to Semenuk in my life, and he messages me “hey I have this old bike in the garage and I can’t see you riding that older clunker”. It really changed my life from like working an 8 to 5 job building electric bikes and then I was starting to fully pursue mountain bikes and then now here I am competing against my idol and hero, and I thank him a million times for everything he’s done. He’s completely changed my life.

Weather Forecast

Tuesday - Pleasant with plenty of sun // 27°C // 1% precipitation // wind 11km/h
Wednesday - Partial sunshine with a thundershower in spots in the afternoon // 27°C // 40% precipitation // wind 9km/h
Thursday - Mostly sunny with a thundershower in spots in the afternoon// 28°C // 40% precipitation // wind 4km/h
Friday - Finals - Rather cloudy and very warm // 30°C // 0% precipitation // wind 7km/h

Weather forecast as of Friday, October 14. Live updates from AccuWeather.

How to Watch

Semenuk made use of his RockShox ZEB single crown by tail whipping it down his drop in the middle of his run. He also flip-whipped further down his line which just shows you the progression of the technology we have at our fingertips these days. Insane.

Just a friendly reminder of what random small gestures can cause in the future. Would we have Dylan Stark as a staple of freeride without Semenuk's generosity? Shout out to all those who reach out, and recognize people in times of need. You never know what any small gesture can generate... Even a smile to a stranger. They may be in a low spot. It may be the one positive thing they recall during their entire day.

This caught my eye as well. Speaks volume of Semenuk's character to just randomly gift a complete stranger a bike that he didn't need, just because he spotted his.. talent I suppose? Great story.
  • 20 0
@dancedancedanny: Dylan was already well known in BMX. It's more so seeing somebody who could be a great talent being hampered by being on an awful bike. And the way Stark rides, he really needs the burliest stuff. May not have been a complete stranger. But still, it's the fact that he recognized an issue and decided to address it. Always love that. For all we know Dylan could have dropped out of the 2 wheel world after his experience in BMX.

can you please give us a link to that story?
  • 24 0
@maxnomas: It's the third paragraph of the quote Dylan Stark gave
  • 47 0
I’ll also add, as someone that worked with Brandon for over 11 years-he was also giving me a heads up on someone that the brand should connect with, sponsor, ordering an extra lid for someone he knew that had a clapped out helmet, keeping an eye open for talent and alerting his sponsors. Zink often doing similar, Riders like that always made my time at TLD more special. Good luck to all, and can’t wait to see Dylan ride.

Until this article I had absolutely no idea about Semenuk reaching out and giving a bike to Stark. I now hold him in even higher regard…what a cool story

100%. Great gesture. Shows his character, and how great the mountain bike community is.
  • 4 0
that's a broheim story for the books for sure

@maxnomas: So for everyone interested, here's the video where Semenuk gave Dylan his old bike: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-oLq2eFYq4
And here is the video where Dylan gave a bmx frame to Semenuk to thank him:

@Alessioq: thank you very much !!
  • 3 0
Actually i have to correct myself, first video is not about Semenuk gifting Dylan his old bike. I was remember it wrong, it's about Semunk letting Dylan borrow his Dj bike after he snapped the chain on his bike.
  • 3 0
@oldmanhucking: That would be the same bike Dylan hucked the infamous "El Toro" stair set on. For me personally, that was the first time I had heard of him and I have been watching everything he's done ever since.

Everyone complains that mountain bikers don't get paid enough, yet everyone loses their shit as soon as they have to pay even a small amount to watch mountain bikers perform.

I get the VPN thing for World Champs because no one is signing up for some expensive TV package just to watch one race. But in this case ESPN+ is $10 for the month. Why spend the same money on a VPN to essentially steal the broadcast instead of watching the on ESPN who actually paid to show it. The only way mountain bikers will get paid more is with more exposure, and the only way they get more exposure is to get in front of a wider audience on networks like ESPN. ESPN isn't going to keep airing these events if people arent watching.
  • 3 1
I think that's more an issue with the companies involved, how much they make, how much they pay out... That people are really complaining about. Also, your statement slightly contradicts itself. ESPN won't do something if people aren't watching, but also paywalls the content on their app. Red Bull and GoPro make a killing. And it's events like this that really created their brand, particularly within MTBing. I dunno how much the pay is, overall... But they should be able to pay for an event like this. Though action sports have always been like this. It's up to athletes to market themselves wisely, because its a contract to contract lifestyle and events never pay well, even X games back in the day. Just look at world cup rewards for example. GoPro's video of Gazza has 220 million views on youtube... They owe every athlete involved for their entire business model imo
  • 1 1
This is pretty close to my take as well. Should these athletes make more - yes Does Disney deserve any money for this - sure Should you support the event over a vpn - yeah.
  • 1 0
Proton VPN is free and works amazing
  • 2 2
@lepigpen: Sounds like you are saying that you are happy if a global multinational that makes a drink is ‘good’ but a multinational media company is ‘bad’.

RB support DH because its cheap marketing v other ways of accessing the same demographics. Imagine what it would cost to put a TV advert on v the cost of broadcasting DH where they get to choose how much logo time they give their own brand
  • 4 0
I would pay $10-20 to watch Rampage, but forcing people into a subscription is stupid. Execs at these places are clueless about their audience. I couldn't care less about ESPN content. Kills me. I am already agonizing about how stupid the WC DH options are going to be.
  • 2 2
@kwdog: so you are ok with paying $20 to watch rampage, but not $10 for a month of ESPN+ (which would include Rampage) because it’s a ‘subscription’?
  • 2 0
@sino428: U serious? 10$ times 12 months is 120$, for something he's only going to use once. You really can't see the difference?
  • 1 1
@chmurka3rg: ESPN+ is a month to month subscription. You can pay for one month ($10 total) then cancel it. A quick google search before commenting would have been helpful here.
  • 2 1
@sino428: it’s just dumb, they’re banking on people “forgetting” to cancel and/or somehow enticing people to stay on the service. I’m not a moron, I know I can cancel, it’s just a bad user experience. It’s a money grab and espn doesn’t care about rampage. Cycling isn’t even listed in the multitude of sports to select when you open the espn+ app.

"Canyon gap for McGarry" , well I guess I'll be tuning in!
  • 15 1
He may not win, but Jaxson Riddle is my favourite to watch, his moto style is so much different than all the other competitors.. And of course always like watching the big guy Kyle Straight ride, his longevity is amazing and aside from the big slopestyle tricks his riding and control is so amazing.. aww heck they are all rad.. don’t care who wins, just want everyone to nail there run with no injuries
  • 2 1
He DJ and Nell all have that Moto style going for them. It's awesome to watch.
  • 3 1
If Jaxson flips once and spins once with his other tricks similar to last year, he’s podium if not W.
  • 11 0
I think we all know by now that someone's going to get robbed!
  • 20 3
 Brendog for sure

(by not being invited)
  • 14 0
@korev: I thought so too, but according to his mate Olly Wilkins it's because Brendog's wife's due date is within a day or two of Rampage and obviously he couldn't be away for two weeks during that time, bummer for us but happy for him.
  • 3 0
 @gemma8788: Bad schedule.
  • 2 0
 @gemma8788: I didn't know that, thanks
  • 7 0
So stoked for Dylan Stark!!! Its been awesome seeing him rise up in the MTB World!
  • 8 0
ESPN + or bust in USA?
  • 2 0
@Tigergoosebumps that is what I have come to understand for those of us in the US wanting to watch it live...
  • 2 0
@RBalicious: A vpn would work for Redbull, my question is about the announcers: will espn just air the redbull broadcast or will they replace Cam McCaul with their own commentator? Will affect whether I do a vpn or buy a month of espn+ lol.
  • 3 0
Nah free vpn, I'm not signing up for espn+. Proton or Privado both work well for me.
  • 3 0
@gemma8788: I dont think ESPN is putting together their own production for this. I cant say for sure 100% but its probably a safe bet that ESPN+ is just going to air the Redbull broadcast.
  • 6 1
It is $10 for the month. Show them you care and maybe get some more money into the sport we love.
  • 1 0
 VPN or bust
  • 3 0
Man I'm so excited!! Feels like this is the last major mtb event to look forward to this year unfortunately. World cup races are over, hardline done, now just Rampage. It's too bad there isn't like a southern hemisphere series of races or something haha.
  • 3 0
Gonna be rad as usual. Can Semanuk win the rally and Rampage? I reckon yes, it's possible.
  • 3 0
 Friday - Finals - Rather cloudy and very warm // 60°C // 0% precipitation // wind 70 km/h
  • 4 0
The wind saturday looks horrible, hopefully that stays away, but Friday looks doable as of now - wind gusts around 10mph.
  • 2 0
@gemma8788: we all hope it's gonna be ok...Windy as we call him

TVS as a wildcard invite - is he fully healed up?

From what he's saying on the socials, he's back and ready to ride. Crazy

Im about to hit the blue tabletop jump line aty local skills park to pump up the riders in case they happen to be live streaming the security camera

I would really like to see Rheeder win this. Second choice would be Sorge.
  • 12 0
andreu because he is a maniac and as long as he holds on, he will be hard to beat.
  • 2 0
 @adrennan:
Yes! He always puts everything on the line, it would be so well deserved if he finally wins. Godziek would be a possibility, too
  • 1 0
@leolentz: He has won before. I think back in 2014 or 2015.
  • 2 0
I'd love to see Rheeder pull another one but I'm really pulling for McCaul. He's consistently had the number 1 or 2 biggest hit. Super gnarly lines. I feel like he's been robbed of 1 if not 2 podiums. Would love to see him in the top 3. Mainly... just want to see everyone safe.
  • 1 0
@sino428: oh you're right. Propably only remembered the last years where he always seemed to be soo close Big Grin
  • 2 0
Team Stark here...been following his bmx path, love the mtb evolution.
  • 1 0
Why is it even shown on a friday? Wouldn't ratings be way higher on a weekend and not in the middle of a normal work day
  • 1 0
Somebody forgot one of the rookies!
  • 2 2
yikes, 4:00AM AEST on a Saturday. Really testing my commitment to the sport
  • 1 0
It is easy on us Europeans this time around. That said, you could just get up early, watch the thing and then go to work or just have a great day riding your bike.
  • 1 0
That freaking photo is so good
  • 1 0
Lyle's 2004 winning run is dope...that no hander was futtin huge.
  • 1 1
not like the life or death stuff but it still sucks what was stolen from us in 2020...
  • 2 1
The line up is kinda dog shit this year. Who are these people?
  • 1 2
Why do they have to use an old zone? It’s all tracked out! THIS IS THE 2nd YEAR IN OLD VENUE! It’s boring.
  • 1 0
 So ESPN+ ?
  • 1 3
How is Rheeder a wildcard? What does that mean?
  • 2 0
I believe last years results count and if I'm not mistaken he wasnt competing so he is a wildcard, even though he won in the past...
  • 4 0
 Means he is competing
  • 4 0
Invited riders are only the top 10 from last year. Everyone else is a wildcard.
  • 15 0
it means he gets to pick a new color while playing uno.
