Porsche has upped its stake in Greyp with a complete buyout of the Croatian eBike brand.

Following the launch of its own eMTBs and taking control of eBike motor and battery brand Fazua last year, Bicycle Retailer reports Porsche has now taken complete control of Greyp.

In a post on its website on February 17 Greyp states: "Greyp Bikes, a technology company for the development and production of the world's first connected electric bicycles, founded by Mate Rimac is fully integrated into Porsche's unique Porsche eBike Performance ecosystem."

The Porsche eBike Performance group structure will include Porsche eBike Performance GmbH located in Ottobrunn, Germany and Porsche eBike Performance doo located in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia. Greyp is currently expected to continue as a brand under the Porsche eBike Performance group although the extent of this and whether the naming stays is unclear.

Will they be moving the motor to behind the rear axle for the next iteration?

Then introduce an "RS" version with no paint and no grips which costs 20% more.

That's correct and they just released a statement declaring that the next two decades of frames will be carry-over models with the only change being an upgrade to the battery.

A lot of comments about how ugly it is, but how can you even tell from that photo? And no, I didn’t care enough to click away to see a different photo.

@TheR: They changed the photo, it was this yellow monstrosity and now its covered in darkness.

When car manufactures realize how much profit they can make off e-bikes. Next thing, they’ll be offering bike lease options.
  • 27 0
I feel like you're joking, but I think you're right.
  • 6 1
I've been saying this for years, it's only now that bikes have got expensive enough that it might become reality
  • 9 0
Wait till you get a subscription to be able to use the power mode (just watch what KTM is doing)
  • 5 0
I wonder how this works. I thought that there was some European rule that brands should sell vehicles with an average CO2 emission below a certain number. You can produce some wild gas-guzzlers, but then you also need to produce something else to compensate for that. Maybe they somehow found a loophole that allows them to sell/give these as a compensation for their less fuel-efficient cars?

(E-) Bike leasing is actually already very popular in Germany since the same or simillar tax benefits as for company cars also apply for "company bikes", i.e. you can use your pretax income to pay your leasing rates. A lot of employers offer a cooperation with a bike leasing company as an employee benefit and you can choose whatever kind of bike you want or even a frameset.
  • 2 0
We have a bike lease here already.
  • 4 0
@slothez: Downhill bike as a "company bike" take that one :-)
  • 2 0
And subscriptions to unlock performance features on your bike. So you'll find yourself slamming into stuff because you didn't realize that the credit card for your brake performance upgrade expired and you now only have half as many pistons working in your calipers...
  • 3 0
bike leaing is big business over here in Germany. Jobrad, a bike leasing company in my city, employs ~500 people. And yes, it's all about ebikes, expensive roadbikes, and mtbs. People are willing to spend 8000€ on a bike if it saves them 200€ taxes...
  • 3 0
@tofhami: Actually, the one company that leases bikes here in The Netherlands is Swapfiets. Primarily basic bikes that allow people to get to work or school though they now also offer bikes with pedal assist (for that same purpose). I'm not aware of anyone doing it for recreation/poser purposes. I'm not too sold on the concept as I feel that part of riding bikes involves properly maintaining them. From what I understand, the lease company will repair/replace parts free of charge which removes the responsibility from the rider. Which makes me worry about the waste of such a model. Is it worth patching a tube if they'll just come and replace the entire tube for you? Stuff like that, I'm not a fan.
  • 1 0
Chevy and ford make ebikes -> lifted truck bros get into e-bikes -> "level on 29’s" -> country music about riding down the dirt roads.

That’s the progression
  • 1 0
@TimMog: I think the bike to work scheme is technically a lease, it's just that the final payment to keep the bike is nominal so everyone does it.

This reminds me the joke about a young sheep farmer. When he asks the elders how they manage to get sex there far away in wild. Elders say they just pick up a sheep and take her to forest...
Months go, he's getting horny, so he picks one and go...
While walking back the elders are sitting around fire, laughing on him..
He gets mad "I'd never do that if you would not push me to you bastards!"
One of the elders just put a hand on his shoulder and says: " We are not laughing about you f*cked a sheep, we all do, but why did you pick the ugly one?"

Then he is so embarrassed he moves to a village in Mexico. Next thing you know he is lonely, so he asks his buddy how they cure their loneliness way out in the Mexican country. His buddy says „the donkey.“ He says „no not the donkey!?“ His buddy says, „yup, it’s the only way.“ So he grudgingly, uh, takes the donkey to the forest whereupon his buddy catches him and proceeds to point and laugh hysterically. He says „WTF, you said it’s the only way.“ And his buddy says, „No señor, you take the donkey to town!“
  • 3 0
@FatSanch: Big Grin I know this one too, but it's not so picking on our Slovakian brothers
  • 36 12
Excuse me Porsche, can you kindly just FO out of MTB. Sincerely, everyone
  • 42 10
It’s just a moped. They’re not really messing with mountain biking.
  • 7 1
I would imagine someone like Porsche would have a good insight in composites and battery and electrical motor development. Plus a lot of VW money behind them? So it will be interesting to see where it goes?...don't get me wrong it will be a 15k yacht ornament!
  • 4 0
If someone wants to throw money and engineering at MTB, I say go for it. Sure there may be a bunch of misses in there, but there may some really useful iterations that come out of it.
  • 2 0
@theboypanda: think there is a lambo version too.. it is horrible....
  • 1 0
@theboypanda: I'm sure that whatever they put towards their cars wont be put towards their bikes.
  • 1 0
@rrolly: so, you are one of the guys blinded by all the blinking lights and smooth-edged design of modern cars. If they do to bikes, what they done to cars in the last years, then future bikes will be twice the size and weight, yet have a nice entertainment system on the handelbars...
  • 1 0
@tofhami: If the blinking lights and smooth edged designs perform better, yup.

So....Interbike 2014 I think, Vegas. There was an awards dinner gala thing "Best road brand" or "Best new tires" etc etc....there was a category for "best ebike brand" or something and Gary Fisher was the presenter of this award. When the MC called Gary Fisher up "And now to present the awards for ebikes, Gary Fisher" and many in the room boo'd him-not for Gary, but because of the ebike category, kind of early days of hate for ebikes.

He was put off by the boos, and got right to the mic with a rant to the audience, I am paraphrasing what he said but, I will try to remember "All of you naysayers better wake the F*ck up, if we don't embrace this technology and innovate a new way of transportation, that is born from cycling, then the AUTO industry will snatch it right up and take it from us, trust me, they are coming and this attitude will screw you all"...

I am not agreeing or disagreeing, just sharing a story from almost 10 years ago.
  • 2 0
E-bikes for transportation - I have no problem with. Don't really care if it's car companies or bike companies that do it - have at 'er. But E-bikes as a way to get motor bikes (starting with low powered ones) onto the mtb trail networks that have been so hard fought for, and built with a ton of sweat equity? Gary Fisher can F*ck right off.
  • 16 1
No room for a bottle. They tried really hard to not make room for a bottle.
  • 13 0
Even to E-bike Standart this is the most ugly thing I have ever seen and I can't imagine the shame, torture and trauma that I would have to suffer from if I was forced to ride it. Honestly.
  • 8 0
Please stop shooting bike product photos in dark lighting. For the love of all things. You can barely tell it’s a bike let alone what it actually looks like.

Worst of all, this is some terrible industry wide trend. Stop.
  • 8 0
Any other time I would agree with you . . . but this time I'm quite happy not being able to see it clearly
  • 9 0
I can see why they're afraid to turn on the lights. We've all been there...
  • 1 0
..but it looks bigger in the dark!
  • 7 0
You can change the front page picture of that thing as many times as you want - it is still the most ugly thing on planet earth.
  • 6 2
Someone worked hard on that bike and these business relationships and yet not 1 word in and I’m filled with embarrassment, disappointment, rage, etc. Why can’t I just be happy for them?
Look at what this is doing to us/me.
  • 7 0
Ah yes, hide the bike after seeing the initial disparaging comments

most hideous looking bike I've ever seen
  • 1 0
 Definitely up there for sure.
  • 4 0
so the bike is so ugly it needs to be shot in complete darkness, and it also has a top tube, a down tube, and a mid tube?
  • 1 0
This is not the car company we want in the emtb game. We want to see hyundai, kia and honda, etc. We want a big manufacturer to stick it to specialized giant and trek. we want to see somebody perform real integration. Why do i see brake mount adaptors on modern bikes. Derailleurs getting bigger not smaller! Also we dont need tubes inside tubes inside tubes such as the dropper post. I want to see a bike which I dont need 15 Allen keys/Torque keys to maintain.
  • 3 0
My eyes hurt too much to work out what the wire going up to the saddle is - can anyone enlighten me?
  • 5 0
@Timmog: from my squinting, it appears to be a tail light/ oil slick for evasive maneuvers
  • 2 0
@therealnobody: Ah yes, I can see the machine guns hidden behind the headlights now!
  • 1 0
It's not bad looking per say, but that livery is definitely not helping it's case. If it were all black, as much as I dislike all black bikes, this one would actually look better and smoothen out the lines some...
  • 4 0
should I ever buy one of these, someone please shoot me!
  • 3 0
Will they take the BMW business model and make your motor a monthly subscription?
  • 3 0
I saw one of these the other day upside down in a hedge with the rider looking confused.
  • 1 0
Is that a wired tail light on a dropper post? On a e-bike under Porsche's name. They could have at least bothered to integrate it in the frame or something without the dangling cable
  • 1 0
They must not have gotten the memo where people were looking for ebikes that looked more normalish and even fit a water bottle. Does that thing have a 40 hour battery or something??
  • 2 0
I wish they would speed up the development of FAZUA firmware, app, and ring controller improvements for Ride 60.
  • 2 0
But are they going to sort the geometry? That monstrosity in the pic has a 440mm reach on a large...
  • 1 0
Next up: the Porsche specialty of offering a version of the bike that actually has less but costs more. Oh wait, that is already being done.
  • 2 0
That looks like a mountain bike designed by Car manufacturer's who dont ride mountain bikes ha
  • 5 1
 Looks like shit

Hopefully with Porches money they can afford to pay the light bill.
