by Ed Spratt
The 2022 Brioude DH Cup has provided another weekend of mini World Cup racing after last week's flat out racing at the Portugal Cup. In the Elite Women's race Camille Balanche took an early-season win as she bested Vali Höll by almost a second. The Elite Men's race saw Loris Vergier just beat out Baptiste Pierron by 0.07 seconds. Vanesa Petrovska took the Junior Women's win and Hugo Marini took the Male Junior victory.

Pinkbike Racing's Thibaut Laly took home an amazing sixth-place finish, less than one second off the win and Aimi Kenyon took a great third place in the Junior Women's category.

Check out the full results below.

Those are some seriously tight times in the men's elite.

On a sub 2 minute track, bound to be hella close. Reminds me of the Shanty Creek NORBA national, all the worlds best DH riders, sub 2 minutes, 1.5 seconds separating the top 20!

@stiksandstones: didn't think I was going to get a shanty creek norba reference this morning. Northern Michigan represent.

Finns placing might be the most impressive. 4th among 9 french that would have way more time on the track

This year the french domination would be massive Smile

It is equally impressive for him to get up there in the top ten without a Commencal bike.

I would 100% support the DH season being races like this and no UCI BS. Bernard Kerr was talking about the continued limiting of social media in his video this week. Mountain biking needs to escape the UCI and create its own sanctioning body. The only group less fun than the NFL is the UCI, you look to be enjoying yourself lets add a rule to ban that. You look to be promoting the sport and people like you, lets ban you talking to people.

Yeah, back in 2020 at the last few WCs, you saw BK having to turn off his gopro in the starting gate.....a few times he 'fumbled' the off-switch...

 Go Finn... Combo breaker!

Short track, lots of laps, close racing and the racers all having fun... UCI cant be involved lol.
But seriously why isnt this a more common thing? Short track is much more exciting.

Hate to be that guy but, wow, those numbers. Short races are so rad. .07 behind the winner? Not a second between the top 5. That's kinda cool. I love long tracks where you see other elements come into play like fitness and mental composure, and those BIG time differences like ~10 seconds but razor thin racing is cool too. Short races and more of them, would be kinda sick. Definitely not the UCI format though, I reckon.

Scott DH Factory men all within 0.2 of a second. Practicing together and following the same line or coincidence?

If you watch videos of the event, you'll see they were actually all riding the same bike. It's a new prototype "thrandem" DH bike with one ride on the pedals, one on the brakes and another doing steering. Scott claims that this reduces the chance of rider error by giving each rider just one aspect to focus on. Each rider has a timing chip that stops time as they cross the line which is why their times are all so close.

 No Miriam this race then?

If you watch that video that Commencal-Muc Off just put out, they are very conscious of how tune up races like the French cups can cause injuries, as happened to Amaury in 2020, and indeed Baptiste last year. So they may be quite happy to have them skip. Bit of a shame for us. This also shows there really needs to be more World Cup races in the calendar. Everyone is ready to go.

@The-Foiling-Optimist: That makes sense. It would be horrible to ruin your season in a preseason injury!
