Updated: Highlights & Results from EWS-E Crans Montana 2022

bigquotesThe penultimate round of the EWS-E took place today in Switzerland at the stunning EWS-E Crans Montana.

The course in the Valais region was a beast - with over 70km distance in total with 4222 vertical meters of climbing and three power stages.

In the Pro Women's race, title contender Laura Charles was out with a hand injury. Could Chile's Flo Espiniera zero in on the crown?

And in the Pro Men's it remained all to play for. Yannick Pontal lead the way and won the last round - could he march ahead on the way to the business end of the season?

After a dousing of overnight rain EWS-E Crans Montana looked more brutal than ever and set about causing havoc from the outset.

No Americans anywhere in the results. For a "sport" based on laziness I thought we'd have better representation! C'mon!

I could identify as a woman and still get my ass handed to me. But at least I would be top 5 in the world.
  • 14 3
So are they still trying to make this a thing?
  • 19 10
The women have realised the futility of riding a motorcycle down a hill.
  • 8 1
Yep. Women are always smarter than men. Go ahead and DV me and call me cap'n saveahoe but those are facts. Ask your mom.

 Yawn

How do they not have more than 4 female participants? It's kind of embarrassing to show the results of a four-person event. No shade on the participants, as I am sure they shred, but how is this event newsworthy?
  • 3 2
 It’s not

 Moving on...

 What a prestigious event.
  • 3 1
The only way this could get interesting is if the the rules would only allow 1 battery with a maximum size. Then there would be different tactics, e.g. power through the climbing stages and do the rest on legpower, go half power all the way, use motors with less torque for full power on most parts of the stages etc.. Like this, its a joke

Flo got second! Out of four? I wish she would do actual Enduro next year, but I know nothing of her contract.
  • 4 1
 4 Female participants
  • 2 1
 And none in ews-e 100-50-master.

69 total participants including all categories (65 men - 4 women)...
  • 2 0
@ArchiRide: Thats because you need multiple batteries to get round the course
  • 4 4
 Is this sport dying?
  • 12 11
@headshot: quiet the opposite. It’s just getting started. There will be more and more competitors as it goes on. Once people realize how much fun it is, it will continue to grow.

@Twenty6ers4life: I have no doubt that e-biking is fun, but I'm not sure that competitive e-biking is necessarily as fun a regularly Enduro. You've still go to work your ass off, but you've also got to worry about batteries, etc in the process. Seems like most competitive people might prefer the simplicity of non-motorized bicycle racing.
  • 2 0
 @jayacheess: I think that's a very fair take
  • 3 3
@Twenty6ers4life: do you think it’s fair to have a competition in which a shorter lighter rider can run more boost for a given battery life and ‘win’ as a result even against a fitter but larger rider?
  • 2 0
@frorider2: yep like Josh Carlson, the bloke weighs about 78kgs / 171p fit as. But going up against say NicoV who’s around 65-68 kgs / 22 - 28 pounds lighter has to be a disadvantage. Nico’s probably faster than Josh downhill but the times lost going up.

This is an acute observation, but depends on perspective.
In all pro categories (U21, normal, Masters) for EWS there are 62 women and 264 men.
In EWS-E there are 4 women, 31 men.
So 11% of EWS-E racers are women, 19% of EWS racers are women.
There just aren't that many women who mountain bike to begin with. The numbers are rising. If you are concerned with the number of women involved or the rate at which they are getting involved, in what ways are you supporting getting women into the sport?

@CM999: How much are e-bike batteries? If you need a decent e-bike, plus like three batteries to race then this is gonna be comparable to Yacht Racing for cost of particpation.
  • 4 4
@Twenty6ers4life: Nobody wants it. Racers are just trying to make a buck and I don't blame them one bit for doing it but there is no honor in it.
  • 3 0
@headshot: Hard to say as yet, but regular EWS is up on numbers from 2021, while EWS-E seems to be down. Can't be a good sign
  • 3 0
 So sick, bruh.

 What an absurd sport
  • 6 7
Once upon a time people startrd a stupid sport, riding old bikes with almost no brakes down dirtroads-that was stupid.... wait a minute.
  • 6 3
@optimumnotmaximum: once upon a time athletes used to be disqualifed for putting motors inside their frames. now they have “races” with them. is that not absurd?
  • 3 0
@wasabijones: just put them on the outside then, makes sense. I dont get ebike racing either but sports are often stupid in the eyes of others ( i love DH and flying down mountains in a squirrelsuit or big wave surfing may not be the most sensible way to live either).

Splitting the pricemoney on Worldchamps between ebike racing and DH ist what really triggers me.

I would like to know also... We haven't seen him in the results for some times now. He didn't even compete in the previous race, wich close to his home.
