Cannonball MTB Festival 2023 Day 5

A doubleheader race at the Thredbo Cannonball festival saw riders get between the tape for the Oakley Australian Open Downhill. The race acted as both an open event for the Cannonball festival and the 2023 Australian National championships.

In the overall standings, it was Jackson Goldstone and Sian A'Hern who took the top honours setting the fastest times of the day on a shortened course due to adverse weather conditions. Jackson Goldstone backed up his Hardline win with another gold medal outing against elite riders as he went 1.4 seconds up on Luke Meier-Smith. Troy Brosnan rounded out the top three, 2.8 seconds back. Sian A'Hern piloted her new YT to the top spot by over five seconds against Nina Hoffmann in 2nd. Anna Newkirk crossed the line over six seconds back in third.

For the national titles the Elite honors go to Luke Meier-Smith and Sian A'Hern, this marks Sian's third national title. In the Junior it is Kael Foale and Sacha Mills who take home the titles.

Too bad Pinkbike doesn’t offer rider stock options for its registered users. I think the closet thing we’ll get to stocks on Pinkbike is a Red Bull Market.

Didn’t we all think he’d lean towards freeride initially?

@likeittacky: last year was great. Wasn't first one march then may.
  • 9 1
@likeittacky: Only a month until Crankworx Rotorua. They'll have have DH. I imagine most Elite Teams will show up as Crankworx will provide better exposure to the MTBing public than UCI/Discovery will.
  • 9 1
@Fill-Freakin: Crankworx DH is looking like it's going to shame the WC, Rob Warner, more cameras...
  • 4 1
@dirtpedaler: If nothing else, it will force Discovery and the UCI to bring their A-game right quick if they don't want to see the asset they just bought devalue into an obscure league.

I'm sorry, the story of this event was watching Sam Hill,
  • 1 0
Why do PB make me click on the results link to see how he did? And not explain whether he had any issues on track?
  • 1 0
@chakaping: Sam didnt have any issues.
Was really quick in some sections with his tradition Sam Hill lines. Still building up his fitness and strenght after his crash in Cairns at Crankworx that required sugeory.
There is still plenty of time until the WC season kicks off and tracks that will be more suited for Sam.

I hope Jackson doesn't put too much pressure on himself to win / dominate for this WC season (i.e., so many people expect him to win). Keep it fun and the results will come :-)

as long as Nina Hoffman is around to tell JG to clean up his room, he'll be fine
  • 4 0
He won this race, so I guess it is not too bad so far

Vali seemed frustrated early that season as it seemed she took that upon herself, but Jackson appears more relaxed. And I think that's extra important as in mens elite there are so many riders able to take the top step. And I've got the feeling that people don't only expect it to come one day, people are also patient. He's proven so much already, it will come. It is tough in the elite. Finn Illes was super dominant as a junior and I think Danny Hart was as well (or at least in the British series).

The first sentence of the write up says "A doubleheader race...." which would lead one to believe that it was two races. On further reading it doesn't seem like it was two races at all but that they just used the results for two different titles. So my understanding is they used the top placed Australian from the race standings in each category to denote the Australian national champions.

So hows DH Fantasy League going to work this year? How are you going to price Jackson and Jordan?
  • 2 0
 Not cheap.
  • 6 1
There won't be fantasy this year I reckon
  • 1 3
 Jordan $400k
Jackson $525k
  • 3 2
@snomaster: Lol surely they have to be the same price.

 Luke-Meier is on fire

Jackson may consider changing his last name to Goldmedal. Would make things easier the next decades...

 Gold Stones seems appropriate.

Congrats to Jackson on claiming the Aussie National Champ title. Will we see him with both the Aussie and Canadian sleeves this year?
  • 6 0
would be an easy way to get a rasta colorway

Wonder if he'll go back to NZ and win Nats there next.

 SAM HILL 18TH!!
  • 5 3
Yeah, in a national race :-/
  • 4 0
@Edendino: he is just coming back from a big injury, and just getting back on the DH bike. Also a very rough physical track, so tough when you aren't in peak condition.

So a solid result, and some proper Sam Hill 2 wheel drifting dominating social media!
  • 2 0
@ponyboy24: even the top 3 juniors had faster times and he nearly beat the winning time of the u17

4 months till the first WCDH…Hopefully he’ll get faster than this…
  • 3 0
@Edendino: obviously you don’t no how lucky we are to see the goat of gravity still racing. By the looks there won’t be another one unless jackson does something special in freeride downhill and ews but he’s already behind the 8 ball
  • 2 0
@PaulinhoCascavel: Keep him in Elite please mate. There is no desire to face him in Master's where eligible.
  • 2 0
@PaulinhoCascavel: Its amazing how little people here seem to be allowing for the fact that he literally spent months off the bike. He's been riding what, less than 2 months and hasnt raced downhill properly in 5 years but was still able to set a decent time. Lots of top World Cup riders coming back from injury struggle to qualify.
  • 2 0
@thelastrun: Hows Jackson behind the 8 ball? So far he's posted times though could posibly have won him the elites races depending on the conditions. Never gonna be another Sam Hill though, for the fact that he changed the way people ride.
  • 1 0
@humoroususername: you’re right mate…i blame myself for having to high expectations. I’m a big Sam Hill fan and want him to win and right now I’m having difficulty facing the reality of his situation. But on instagram he seamed happy about is performance and optimistic about getting better results in the future, so I van remain hopeful! Ahaha
  • 1 0
@inside-plus: well Sam at that age double world champ won a free ride competition so that is behind the 8 ball or is it not
  • 4 2
Spoiler alert on the story title! Sheesh.
  • 1 0
Jackson is for sure damn fast but breaking into the top 5 in elites this year will be a challenge I think.
  • 1 0
Can't wait for this WC series to see Jackson rip it up in the elites.
  • 1 0
Congrats to Asian and Luke on getting the sleeves.
  • 1 0
 Was Nina going all-out?
  • 4 0
Sian is a Thredbo machine. She wasn’t letting Nina a sniff! Be good to see how she goes in the world cups this year.
  • 2 0
@Joe89: Yeah great to see. I'm rooting for her this year for sure and moreso because it's fashionable to hate YT theses days.....
  • 1 0
I was thinking the same, I was wondering why it wasn't a Hoffman, Newkirk top two
  • 1 0
@Joe89: In the Jack Moir interview Jack mentioned most racers at Thredbo know every rock on the course, which partly explains why Nina finished well, but behind Sian but Jack was also amazed that Jackson managed to beat the locals on their turf.
  • 1 0
@IanJF: yeah home court advantage big time. JG is just on another level ay
