We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel that we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Cameron Jeffers Attempts to Break the Boris Bike Hour Record

bigquotesFilippo Ganna holds the current UCI hour record. Acheiving a distance of 56.792km. Let me honest, I'd have no chance. So when I found out someone had set a distance using a Santander Boris bike, I had to give it a go! Cameron Jeffers

Gee Atherton at Rampage

Due to the video being age-restricted follow the link to watch on YouTube.

bigquotes"The main problem with building one of the biggest drops you've ever done, is that at some point, you have to test it"

WARNING: CONTAINS CRASH FOOTAGE

“I love the challenge of pushing myself to the absolute limit, that’s why I ride bikes, it’s what I enjoy doing and what it’s all about for me”

Throughout his 20 year career Gee Atherton has constantly sought to challenge himself, to push the absolute limits of what’s possible on a mountain-bike, whether that’s in the course of a big mountain filming project or at an event like Rampage.

He promised us all that this was going to be a chill one, but once he’d seen that 60-foot drop he 100% believed that he could land it. He very nearly did.

Swampfest Documentary - 'Build Up Burn Down'

bigquotesI'm sure you hear this all the time but…. Swampfest truly is a one-of-a-kind event. Swampfest transcends everything you think a BMX event can be. Trey breaks it all down for us in this documentary by Yawn Media. From ridiculous ramp ideas to ramp construction to burning them all down to the ground at the end of the event.

Shout out to Trey Jones and the whole Swampfest crew for continuing to put together one of the best events of the year.

Yeah bro I love ripping through old school cryptobiotic soil that takes centuries to grow and is critically important for the desert ecosystem. SHRED. Seriously Peter Jamison was just blasting off the trail line multiple times. Learn how to ride here in the desert if you are going to do it.

@541freeride: it’s actually a pretty big deal in the desert. It’s a major part of the ecosystem and takes thousands of years to grow. In the places like the Pacific northwest you can cut a trail and if you abandon it, it will return to nature relatively quickly. In the desert, trails stick around for centuries.

Doubtful that they disturbed any centuries old soil but maybe a few tears old that is trying to regenerate. The entire area was approved for biking and hiking by the land managers when they had Rampage there and it's not far out of town limits. At the first Rampages fans were allowed to trample all over the area during practice and competition and pretty much go wherever they wanted to watch guys hit their lines, people were running around everywhere. There are trails all over the place and alternate lines or chicken out lines and motorcycle trails. I don't remember seeing any signs in the area telling people to stay off the soil like there are in Moab, but it is best to stay on the trail if you can.

 @DoubleCrownAddict: Public land is managed. It isn't a free-for-all

Recreation and bombturbation. We should fertilize that soil with the artisanally dispatched corpses of warmongers

@furiousstyles: The first Rampages were absolutely a complete free for all. In Dave Watsons finals run he took a drop he had looked at but not hit before. Fans were scrambling to get out of the way as he came blasting through and hit the drop and made a deep line through the undisturbed soil. It was awesome.
But compare that to today's Rampage where they dig for days and make a 15 foot wide landing and the same people bothered about this guy going off line pretend that's ok and say nothing?? Hypocrite much?
Distributing criptobiotic soil should be avoided but it is the absolute least of our completely doomed environmental worries.

@ceecee Dead Russians would contaminate the soil so please no.

illegal whataboutism on the play.

As MTBers, we've gotten smarter about these issues over the last few decades. The sport is also MASSIVELY more popular meaning the consequences are bigger. The BLM just closed 300 miles of trails to ATVS north of Moab because they couldn't play nice.

If we don't self police LNT principles, we are next. You won't get any more Rampage. And my favorite trails here in Utah will disappear.

. . . . . . .I also like going on forums and talking down to people, my holier than thou attitude derived from having never put my tyres anywhere fragile.
  • 7 6
@furiousstyles: Hiking around the original rampage site isn't illegal and the land manager doesn't seem to care. There are camp sites and jump lines all over the place and people are still building lines or fixing up old ones and nobody cares that they are disturbing the soul. It's not like Moab and it's a fun area with all the trails and paths everywhere.
Good luck keeping freeriders from freeriding at the mecca of freeride, you would be laughed off the hill if you showed up and started confronting people with your attitude. Have you even been there?

That ski video... can't tell if real or a teaser for a playatation game. All the angles, closeup shots looks so unreal somehow... impressiv, all the things people are able to make and do. Looks like a lot of fun to film all that. Editing it must be hell, stitching it all together that fluidly. Looks like skiers heaven Smile

Man that was bonkers. Would love to see a bts of this.

That was a great edit! Music, skiing, scenery all on point

 @gotohe11carolina:

I am not an AV, GoPro etc guy.....it looks like that was one continuous shot? Showing my ignorance here.

I will say, as corregraphed as some of that is/was I also love the nitro circus seemingly chaotic stuff. Just looks like a he'll of a good time for all!

Physics seems pretty off at some points, and shadow for the drone, running from skier POV to drone height from ground. Cool video?
  • 9 1
@enis: @enis: No, bunch of sneaky cuts like the drone pan-up and the clever use of the trees, it is very fine editing for sure.

Just “Santander Bike” will do thanks.

Yes, those bikes looks fit for purpose, they need to be renamed.

They were effectively a signed deal when boris won the mayorship and put his name on them, but I guess Ken Bikes doesn't have the same ring to it..

@L0rdTom: a lot of drivers in London call them something similar to Ken bikes to be fair

after watchin the docu series LifeOnThePlanet, I’ve decided to hasten the extinction of our species to benefit the planet. so I ride a lil harder, might be muddy, might be on precious type soil, whatever. just gonna rocknroll until the next (5th) mass extintion takes place.
