by Ed Spratt
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel that we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Danny MacAskill's Wheelie Project

bigquotesFollowing on from the success of Do a Wheelie, we go behind the scenes of Danny’s ambitious project to celebrate everyone’s favourite trick: THE WHEELIE. Can Danny bring his own flare to this iconic skill and land an ambitious new stunt, the wheelie front flip? Cut Media

Dirt (1995)

As part of Rob Warners Retro Tube uploads he has shared the 1995 classic Dirt.

Thredbo Cannonball Whip Off Carnage

bigquotesBoys and girls were going LARGE! Hats off to Patty Butler for sending his meat and taking the win.
Shout out Thredbo for putting on the sickest event ever. The caliber of riders and whole atmosphere at cannonball is mad, there is nothing else in Aus that compares. Huge thanks to everyone that came up to me and was frothin on Moi Moi Tv, it made not racing almost bearable. Cya next year, and fingers crossed I'll be racing!

Brett Rheeder Garage Bike Builds

The Gorge Bike Park with Bernard Kerr, Matt Walker, Charlie Murray & More

bigquotesWe head to The Gorge Bike park in nelson which was built by hand (Wyn Masters & crew) and funded by a rather wealthy guy! It was an absolute time with a crew of Hermine, Matt Walker, Charlie Murray and everyone's favourite Fit Brad.

Enjoy some rocky and sketchy fun sports fans!

The trail builders behind the Finale EWS

bigquotes“The Energy of a trail, I don’t know if it’s noticed? Maybe it comes from deep within!?” Says the godfather of trail building in Finale, Fulvio Balbi.
As we sit together on a hillside halfway down one of his lesser known creations Louise Paulin and Bex Baraona probe to find out why Fulvio does what he does? Why when riding in this region you can tell if you are riding a Fulvio trail? and How did he find such an understanding partner who lets him spend day after day in the forest building hundreds of miles of trails in the Finale and surrounding regions?

Fulvio goes to great lengths to ensure we realise that it isn’t just him, but a load of dedicated riders and builders from all over the region that help to sculpt this impressive landscape, but “yes” he admits “I do have a particular style!”

Jesper Tjäder's Winning Run from Red Bull PlayStreets 2023

bigquotesGoPro Athlete Jesper Tjäder has a flare for the unconventional, which is why he's the first ever repeat winner of the Red Bull PlayStreets freestyle ski event. This unique urban-skiing extravaganza turns the small town of Gastein, Austria into any park skiier's dream—filled with unusual features that lend themselves to creative trickery. GoPro

Hydraulic Press Accidents Vs. Ballistic Head

bigquotesHow dangerous is to crush stuff with hydraulic press if you don't have neccesary safety equipment? We are going to use our test dummy / ballistic torso to find out on this work safety experiment! Do not try this at home!! or at any where else!! We explode ball bearings, bearing ball, hammer, knife and brass cylinder in our safety box using 150 ton hydraulic press and 240 ton force sensor. Hydraulic Press Channel

Swampfest just makes me proud, there's something about burning everything in sight that brings out the true Floridian.

OSHA approved! Hope all that plywood goes to some good use afterwards or salvaged for the next hurricane building protection or maybe a homeless encampment! The cost of wood these days this is ridiculous.
  • 28 1
@likeittacky: they pile everything up after the last day and burn it
  • 12 8
@likeittacky: they used to build it all from recycled and trash. This year it was all new building materials and they burn everything at the end. Even the concrete bowl was demolished at the end. It was cooler when you could still rip your ear off and it didn't say brand names on the obstacles.

You definitely get the strong impression that the Florida of Swampfesr is a different Florida than the Florida you experience when you, for example, attend a heavily sponsored industry conference at the Marco Island Marriot.

@likeittacky: just what the world needs more homeless encampments!! The only thing more ridiculous the the price of wood is your comment!!

@mhoshal: I agree we don't need more encampments but doing something with reCycling any wood that could be used for a good purpose is smart -stewardship. Have you built a structure in the last couple years? I'm assuming not ,with your perception on things? I'm also quite supersized the virtue signaling hivemind would dare to revel, at the toxins being emitted into the atmosphere ! Oh wait, i forgot, its ok because Florida is a Conservative state; Right ?
  • 3 0
@therealnobody: much better imo but the liability prevents it.
  • 19 6
@mhoshal: Increasing the number of safe places for homeless people to sleep doesn't increase the number of homeless people. You realize that, right? Similarly, kicking a homeless person out of their current spot doesn't make them not homeless.
  • 2 1
@likeittacky: uhm... not exactly what you said.
  • 3 1
@pmhobson: if the spot is in your neighrbourhood, it could make them homeless somewhere else. It's a local maxima math problem for most people.

Asking again - Advent Contest winners? Did the entries fall into the swamp? I wheelie wanna know.

@mariomtblt: Helpful as a box of rocks.

@noapathy: Hey, to a person in search of rocks, that would be the most helpful thing.

@vonroder77: My friend you've got Oskar Blues, Independent Trucks and Pit Vipers sponsoring this thing. While not the biggest, those are not small companies.

@vonroder77: not all of us are dentists...

@everythingsucks: Naaa I'm more of a Ranier Lucky Lager, Lowenbrau kinda guy. Cheers

@FloridaHasMTBToo: Oh for sure dude. I'm referring to the large demographic that tends to come along with the MTB Industrie. Stuff that happens/makes Swampfest would never fly at say...Sea Otter. Think about it, gaining sponsors that cater towards the Gucci Sprinter Vans with grande latte enema machines, or us dirt bags who good give a sh@t. The fact that my O.P is taken on a some what personal level kind furthers my point.

I spent the day at Swampfest yesterday and it’s got to be one of the craziest things I’ve ever experienced. Words don’t do it justice. Let’s just say I nearly got blown up 3 times at the end of the night. So much Florida Man.

swampfest always looks like a hell of a time.

Cut Media and Gopro: Both should read "flair", not "flare". As in, "People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, mkay? They come to Chotchkie's for the atmosphere and the attitude. Okay? That's what the flair's about. It's about fun."

Trey is a legend.... I'd love to go to swampfest.

DIRT... holy crap, when small wheelies and short jumps were tricks. Larger jumps? Pull out the body armor and the Proflex. The Spec first generation FSR, the music. I just relived my high school years.

I watched this on vhs till it wore out when I was a kid. Still reckon JMC had tons of style even today. He got it, long mannie’s, drifting, imagine what he’d reckon of bikes these days if he was still around. The genuine OG.
  • 18 15
I hate to be that guy, but swampfest seems like the kind of thing that is a major injury or crime away from getting shut down and having a YouTube documentary about it a couple years later.
  • 30 2
That's what makes it organic, raw, and wonderful!
  • 8 2
They actually made it way more pro this year and that made it less sick. Let bmxees bmx

That gopro video would be so much better without the gopro POV footage
  • 6 1
what, no wildlife harassment at swampfest this year, what a shame.
  • 2 1
I'd love to transplant all of the trail clones on the North shore to Swampfest.. see how they fair.. In all seriousness though, that place looks like Pleasure Island from Pinnochio.. pretty messed up to see Chris Russell post about ruining his eyeball there..

HPC and Project Farm should collab to test...something. Like eyewear. Test all the Walmart, Home Depot and Amazon eyewear. A huge exploding bearing has to sort of be like a tree branch in the eye.

I wheelie don't give a shit about wheelies*

*cos I'm not able to do any
  • 3 0
Haha, yep that is this seasons goal, to be able to ride confident wheelies. Just spent a little time yesterday working on them in my driveway.

What ever happened to James Smurthwaite anyway?! Weren't these randoms his poaching from days at Dirt and their randoms?
  • 2 0
That's a good callback. Looks like his "most recent" post was May 2022. And I now can't remember the last time I read anything of his here. I'm way behind on podcasts so don't know if he's been on the airwaves.
  • 4 0
He went to work for the BBC in some capacity I can't remember. It's a shame there was no post about it at the time.
  • 2 0
@codfather1234: ah yeah looks like you're right. BBC. Good for him - like you say shame there was no post or anything after he worked on PB for a few years.

That Danny fella is really good at wheeling by only using his front brake....I usually use my rear one

The MacAskill video was wheelie neat. I'll show myself out.
