by Ed Spratt
We use Slack as our workplace communication tool at Pinkbike and we have a #randoms channel which we use to share an assortment of videos and stories from all corners of the cycling world and beyond... We thought a couple of the moments from the past week were too good not to share with a wider audience, so here are some of the highlights.

Cam McCaul Tests Out the Noise Levels on the Fuel EXe

bigquotesWhen we’re on the trail and connecting with nature, we don’t want to hear more than the sound of our tires on the dirt, the wind through the trees, and the hoots and hollers of our riding crew. Up until now, e-bikes have pulled us away from that experience with high-pitched motors that take us out of the element. Fuel EXe is different. It’s not only quieter—it’s less annoying. Trek

Hydraulic Press VS Titanium Bolts

bigquotesLet's compare the strength of titanium bolts, a Chinese cheap bolt, and a bolt used in the space industry Crazy Hidraulic Press

That video of the bolts being broken by shear is really bad. He uses different diameters of bolts in every test. For the Chinese titanium bolt he used a bigger size bolt. That's not cientific at all

 Neither is the comment section.
  • 11 1
Not only that, but wouldn't you want to torque all the bolts on to the plates the same? I imagine a tighter bolt makes a much stronger bolt. Kinda how loose bolt hangers in climbing are no to be trusted.

Not to mention the abysmal editing. Cool concept, but terrible execution.
  • 5 0
Torque washers etc alll would be pretty critical here

Wait until they do a Chinese ti welded joint…

I cant wait for a pinkbike article where its explained how to shear a bolt without upsetting the comment section

"Fuel EXe is ... not only quieter—it’s less annoying." Imagine the surprise when they find out a motor that makes no sound at all and is annoyance-free already exists.
  • 57 4
but that motor has a tendency to be lazy and rather wants to chill on the couch instead of doing a huge climb

@Sethimus: There's always a few units with manufacturing defects. Hard to get a refund for those.

@mi-bike: what about those on your friends bikes that develope a whining noise at some point into the climb?
  • 12 0
I tend to find the air intake really struggles to keep up with combustion demands resulting in a wheezing noise. Considering getting a bigger scoop mod.
  • 2 0
@L0rdTom: those require usually a big load of work to install
  • 2 0
 @Sethimus:
A manual air intake modification for a few minutes usually helps with this whining noise…
  • 3 0
@Sethimus: STFU or similar products work best for friends who develop serious whining noises on climbs.

 @L0rdTom:
Suggestion: gummy bear mod

Yes, but that motor often sounds close to death at the top of a climb or after going fast
  • 1 0
You clearly haven't ever ridden with me.

That motor tends to wheeze, cough and swear on medium to hard climbs, and sometimes more swearing on descents. Big Grin

Something very important is missing for a good hydraulic press video...

...a Finnish accent!

That paint job is dope but needs two more wolves and a moon.

My uncle has a jersey (100% cotton) that would match perfectly.

But his tshirt also comes with an eBike fit.

@Jvisscher: Yeah, they are still people wearing that sort of super kitsh cheesy t-shirts. But I never saw any featuring at the same time: a wolf, a delphin, a deer, a truck, a Harley D, an Indian, an eagle... all of them howling at the moon.
Bad taste has no limits

The bullet test is almost like going into a carnival to see the "Man-eating Chicken". So lame!

Also, another lame video is the bolt strength test. Titanium is known for it's weight-to-strength vs other metals. The reason why it's used is for weight savings for a comparative strength with similar metal. What a lot of people fail to realize is that titanium is more ductile than steel, especially if the steel is hardened. So, titanium will bend a lot more before it breaks. Also, the video also doesn't take into account the alloy composition of the titanium bolts. Internet sucks when you have stupid videos like these!

 Bolts!
1st part - hmmm, 5m vs 6m bolts, some w/ washers and some not, various torque values…
2nd part - my new favorite bland dance slo-jams kicks in and it’s “breaking bolts is fun!”

"Your like going racepace" " Nah Bro, not really" had me laughing real hard xD

Oh man that Trek with TQ motor is where the future is at.. Very-very impressive, hope the reliability is there as well, game changer.

What's up with the motor noise? My Levo can barely be heard climbing on the road in the night when it's quiet and even then it's being drowned in tire and drivetrain sounds. On the trails you can't hear anything related to motor noises.

 Really enjoyed the press video.

Who is the dude commenting on the X Games best trick? And why does the keep calling it a backflip 180 rather then a flair?
  • 1 0
Probably because it's onto the deck instead of staying in the quarter pipe? *shrug*

 Wolf-pug hybrid looks viscous.
  • 2 0
If the viscosity of the paint were too high, it would be impossible to paint it with that fineness of detail.
