by Ed Spratt

A one-of-a-kind trail bike has been stolen after thieves broke into the Founder of Starling Cycles' shed.

Earlier this week, thieves broke into Joe McEwan's shed and took the unique single speed trail bike with its bright yellow paint job and components from Profile Racing, Funn, Maxxis, Magura and Rust Components.

bigquotesThey Stole Joe's Bike!

Some **** has broken into Joe’s shed and stolen his one-of-a-kind Beady Little Eye.

It’s the exact bike shown here, in Colman’s Yellow and built with Profile Racing, Funn, Maxxis, Magura and Rust Components bits.

You won’t see many of these around, so, if it pops up it’s likely too hot to handle.

Let’s bring it home! Contact us via DM, email, however you can.

I’ve already posted to the Starling Cycles FB page about this, but I have a very similar, yellow (well, mustard) BLE in the local bristol area (I.e. it’s not unique!) so please don’t [try ;-)] and chase me down and beat me up!

 nice try

Sus that this is your only comment Wink

@redrook: Ha! Yeah, it’s because I spend a lot more time riding my bike than I do on forums . But, seriously check the Starling FB page. Joe backed me up on there.

that is something a bike thief would say

Joe from Starling here. Yes Chris genuinely has a BLE in the same colour and very similar build to mine, so please don't hassle him!!!

@phutphutend: So "one of a kind" is actually one of at least two in Bristol? Good luck getting it back

Conveniently someone named "Joe" (*wink*) backs this up?! Suuuuuuure... GET HIM!!!

It really stinks when people Steel bikes like this... So hopefully the Beady Little Eye can be found sooner rather than later!

@zonoskar: I don't know what more stupid, the fact you got down voted or the fact he got up voted making a pun about a stolen bike. Personally I think these puns are f*cking stupid and this isn't the forum to be dropping them in. But then again deadbeats have no shame.
  • 26 0
@mhoshal: Deadbeats might have no shame, but the people upvoting the pun just have a sense of humour. It's a stolen bike it's not like someone died. Yellow card for diving ya simp.
  • 2 1
@mhoshal: @mhoshal: I wondered if English wasn't his first language? Based upon the little flag next to his name, Valid question really if hes learning the language.
  • 3 1
@thewanderingtramp: Experienced Pinkbike users of all linguistic backgrounds would recognize a pun like that. But since you mentioned flags, where's yours? Now we're left to assume (based on your grammatical errors) that English isn't your first language either.
  • 2 0
@redrook: Yeah, I should have guessed it was a pun. Sorry for that.

Fantasy justice system overhaul : Punishments for bike thieves should be decided by a jury of riders with similarly valuable bikes.
  • 6 2
It’s pretty shit the bike has been stolen, but on a different subject, this concept where the bearings are placed on the BB area is pretty genius. Pinkbike should review that!

BB pivots have been around for decades. Used to be only good for SS as the pedal bob was terrible in the early days but, more modern shocks an suss tunes have made them way better. They're bloody good for SS as there's no chain growth at all, so you'll see them a lot of FS slope an play bikes

Concentric BB pivots have been around since the 90's. Check Rotec's Pro DH bike from the 90's. It doesn't make much sense on anything other than a SS slopestyle bike tho.

wow there's been a lot of stealing lately.

 You have to wonder why
  • 1 0
I thought I was the only one still running a manual non-cable dropper post. I still have my 100mm Joplin post that is still functioning just as well (poorly) now as the day I got it almost a decade ago. I regularly go off trail when huffing and puffing and trying to elevate it before a climb. That is a beautiful bike. SCUBA yellow is top 2 for me. Not that it justifies stealing it but the temptation has to be stronger in that case.

Not sure this is legal in the UK but here's one shocking> way to prevent thieves. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOQI58ICCP4

Also - cell-triggered, battery game & closed circuit monitoring & signage help. I personally hate seeing criminals treated with kid gloves (the US is #1 with that) so - if the law won't do anything, do it yourself preventative justice helps, esp if clear signage warns the perpetrators. LEO certainly is not going to investigate stuff like this, at least not where I live and I've caught so many meth-heads on camera in time to literally met them head-on with weapons to protect my land, property & family that they just know not to F with us anymore. So far I'm not the one in jail.
  • 1 0
@watchtower: US is number 1 with that? My dude, you've clearly never been to Canada.

Theft under $5k is basically not a crime, I almost did time for winning a fight against a guy trying to car jack me, and the dude who murdered my roommate at our house party with a kitchen knife infront of me and like 50 other people did a seven spot.

Special place in hell for people who steal bikes. Sigh! I've said and written this way too many times. Prayers go out to Joe, Guerilla Gravity, Canfield, and all companies that were victims of these scumbag bike thieves.

Has One-Of-A-Kind Bike Stolen.......broken into Joe’s shed....... A shed is certainly where I would keep my one of a kind bike.
  • 8 2
It's a bit more than a shed, it a solid wooden outbuilding with proper locking door. The bike was also locked up inside. the thives I think followed me home from a ride, then came back prepared with the right kit to steal the bike. They left other bikes that were unlocked in the shed, so it was pretty targeted...
  • 4 2
Who woud've thought a little wooden shed at the end of the back garden would be so vulnerable

I keep my bikes in a shed, It's over build with bike security in mind. It seems way more secure than my old ass house.
  • 2 0
my starling got stolen too. also one of a kind. but september in italy.
  • 2 2
Like when Canfield had their prototype stolen. I his is recovered soon, also I hope these go in to production soon!! that thing looks fun as hell

If it's not in the local cash convertors it'll be wheeling round the local sink hole estate between spice deliveries. Frown
  • 3 2
Sucks to hear. The BLE is one of the most interesting fs bikes I've seen in a long time.
  • 4 4
that is a shame, however i do wonder why someone places a one of a kind prototype in a "shed" what possible kind of security can a shed have....

I assume Bristol? I'll keep an eye out. Shed or no shed, they'll take it if they want it.

I SS but haven’t ever built up a full suspension SS please recover this bike and do a feature.
  • 1 1
I wonder if it was an inside job. How is it that thieves always seem to know right where to go to steal something that’s unique or one of a kind!?
  • 2 0
i can assure you it definitely wouldn't of been an inside job
  • 3 2
Cheap advert, the glass is always half full.
  • 6 2
It's not a cheap advert, turns out I'm not insured, so it's left me out of pocket quite significantly!

@phutphutend: The sad part is, this bike is probably already stripped and the components sold. The frame will be scrapped or repainted (probably badly).

Depends how your shed is build. If it's legit, it's basically a small house. I have more confidence in my shed set-up than the doors or windows on my house.
