Video: Brendan Fairclough's Rampage POV

Oct 26, 2019 at 10:22
by Ed Spratt

bigquotesWith much anticipated hype throughout Rampage about the entertaining UK crew, the MTB world watched as Olly Wilkins, Ben Deakin and Brendan Fairclough set out to craft a bigger, faster and wilder line from Brendog's remaining 2018 Red Bull Rampage run. And as always, Canyon Gaps were front and centre!Red Bull Bike

Favorite run... The canyon backflip...That's rampage
  • 14 2
Yep, amazing run, but possibly the worst photographer ever at 1.22?!?! Pointing the wrong way?? Was he trying to get crowd reaction? Surely Brendog at point blank would’ve been the better shot?!

Only kidding btw, he was doing better than me just being there :-)
  • 2 0
@aps62: And too close to the line right on the landing. Come on dude...
  • 3 0
I think that would have landed a solid 3rd if he could have just put one more trick in the run- like a no hander on of those drops or finish jumps. He was right there, damn good- run- couple sections in there that are rough AF.
  • 95 1
omg, that aint no slopey line. judgies not approve, me approves big time
  • 56 0
Yep, his track was like a DH Race track in a lot of places, raw, rocky, not smooth Aline stuff, mixed in with some sick man made features, and the most unique feature on the hill with the Rock, pure rampage to me.
  • 57 1
His run was the winner in my books! Pure Rampage. Less slopestyle, more raw. Loved hearing his boys screaming when he flipped the canyon gap! Watching their build videos, I was very scared for him feeling like he needed to make a death defying run even more death defying to appeal to the judges. SICKSICKSICK!!!!!

why say lot word when few word do trick!
  • 1 0
@fodermonk: He was talking like this might be his final Rampage; if so it was a heck of a way to go out...

Best line for me ,rampage is basically slopestyle on roids these days ,brendogs run was rampage
  • 35 0
While all the riders had gnarly lines and crazy tricks. A lot of the rampage lines made me think, damn those drops/jumps is way too big for me.. But Brendog's line made me think, DAMN that line has drop/jumps that are too big for me AND technical sections that are too gnarly for me. That's what I love about rampage the mixture of technical riding with big jump features. Rampage seems to have morphed more into a FEST style comp where the jumps are huge and gnarly but mostly the track is mostly "smooth".
  • 4 2
have you been to rampage? stood on the spines or at the edge of one of the drops? the reason the landings are so smooth is you cant hit a 40' drop to groomed rock and dirt and expect anyone to ride that shit out.
  • 5 0
@wiscobiker: While I haven't been to rampage, I know that you cannot send a 40ft drop into a rock garden. But what I mean is that every feature seems to be perfectly manicured. At 0:39 fairclough sends it off the rock drop and the drop take off isnt perfectly flat and made into slopestyle like step down drop, its just the edge of the rock and he sends it off and thats what rampage is. Its making the best of what you have, not making every feature into the best most perfect bike park style feature.

 The People's Champ!

This is spectacular, Fairclough must have been on the podium. Do not know how judges' scoring is done. Szymon Godziek's run was far more interesting, cleaner, and more technical than Tyler McCaul, but the latter got higher score, I could not believe it. Very glad that Simon got people's choice award in the end, he truly deserved it.

Brendog's line was pure freeride to me, but it's also the very embodiment of what makes British mountain biking great, just transported to Utah! There's not much elevation to work with in the south of the England where those boys (and I) are from so we build stuff where the features come thick and fast, with a mix of every discipline of MTB from dirt jumping, to hucking it to flat off a loading bay to sketchy jump building all in the name of building a downhill course.

But it's not just the riding that makes this great, it's that special bond of friendship that made that run possible. The video of those three building the 2018 line that Ben produced www.youtube.com/watch?v=22Uw3p-EVBw last Christmas is truly heart warming. Three Brits with the standard Brit male inability to really say how much we care about each other working for their mate to help him realise his and their dream and disguising the love and respect with a never ending stream of p**s-taking. The constant banter that (almost) never goes too far, the moments when all Deak's army training can't stop him wanting to give Bren a hug, all of this will be very familiar to anyone who's grown up in the UK.

And then there's the cast of supporting characters that made it all possible, people like Matt Jones (AKA the nicest man in MTB) teaching Bren to tuck no hand the week before they head to the states.

There's an awful lot to of talk about how expensive MTB is, but compared to any brand of motorsport it's cheap as chips. Anyone can get involved (as the groms on their supermarket bikes who out style everyone at my local jump spot show), and then it's just a question of how much time you put in, your natural talent and having a really good bunch of people to ride with. If you pour your heart and soul into it, you end up a legend in DH, Hardline and at Rampage.

TL;DR It's frikkin heart warming stuff all of this, I'm a bit emotional! Big Grin

I'm no Brit but my source of media when I got into this wasn't Pinkbike. It was Dirt magazine since 2003 and for a couple of years, Earthed for the videos. I definitely get that vibe and loving it. There was a nice article in Cranked magazine a couple of issues ago about the Jon Pont where Brendog and Wilkins used to dig, hang and ride back in the days. See, I know too little about the US, Canadian, Polish, Taiwanese and South African scenes to really put it in perspective and I'm sure there must have been cool stuff going on everywhere. But the UK scene just happens to be well documented and as such it was my inspiration. Still primarily an Olly Wilkins fanboi but I definitely appreciate Brendog for his skill, style and the friendly fun vibe he always seems to have going.

Robbed. Pure and simple. That boys got big baws
  • 21 0
This was redemption for him in a way... So glad he tweaked his line went all in to put on one of the best shows rampage has given so far. And he got recognition on his score this time. This run is proper mental
  • 17 1
I was so nervous watching the live feed, I got a shiver down my spine when he flipped that canyon gap!! My 4yr old son was watching too and even he was like “Woah Dad did you see that jump!!” Class!!
  • 3 0
That's awesome you watched it together
  • 16 1
Gives me chills watching it. By far the best run, flow, pace, tech, huge gnar and tricks. What I love the most is hearing his expression of short breathing before drops, WE have all had that before doing something gnarly on a bike. The real feel the fear and do it! As much as I enjoy these contests, Rampage, Joyride etc, over the years I just feel they are poorly judged and fanboys just get it all the time. Not taking anything away from Semunik or Reeder, they are ridiculously talented. There is no way Brendon F should have been off the overall podium with that run. Also years back, Martin Soderstrom was completely robbed at Joyride too, just too mention two that stand out in my mind. Ultimately, it was really one of the best Rampages of all time!
  • 14 0
This was definitely my favorite run of the whole event. While the lines get more and more paved Brendog kept most of his line natural with a little bit of grooming. But not to the point it was slope style 100%

The 2 killer insane back flips were of course the highlight. I was expecting the canyon backflip but not the 2nd one and it was a NO HANDER one too!

My jaw dropped because Brendan is a racer freerider (Freeracer) so he's never been known to do tricks and what do you know? He pulls them off Flawlessly!!

He deserved to be on the podium~
  • 15 0
 Brendog deserves the Best trick!
  • 16 2
He should have scored much higher!
  • 9 0
apart from his unique rampage line, I think that this man is someone to admire because of his attitude. He had a chance to get into the podium but he chose to honor his friend, Jordie Lunn. what a personality! thank you Brendan.
  • 8 0
Brendog did so great raised his level so much, he gives no shit for the podium and on top of that tribute to jordie? That is class!!!
I want to buy a scott just to thank him!
  • 8 0
The pace that he rode the whole line is amazing, even the section into his vertical cliff. Hands down the best of the day for that alone. So many other riders were creeping into their steep sections. Deserved a podium.
  • 8 0
NOOOOOOOOOO disrespect to all the other riders ,BUT.... his run blew my mind ..( along with Andreau). I TRULY hope he was kidding about saying its his last rampage ... THE ULTIMATE FREERACER.. BRENDOG RULES !!!!!!
  • 8 0
Favorite run from this year and last year. Winner in my eyes. Raw, fast, gnarly and 100% original. This is the spirit of Rampage. A welcome break from the freeway that the rest of the mountain has become.
Thx Brendawg!
  • 6 0
Semenuks like was slopey but sick, I do think Brendon shout have got second atleast just for the canyon gap backflip. Third atleast! Brendon’s line was raw as and should have placed higher
  • 6 1
Anyone hear Bearclaw saying on his Insta that he though Brendogs rub was overscored?! Wtf. I was seriously unimpressed with him for that. He clearly is only interested in seeing his 'homies' winning doing a slopstyle run.

Brendon should have kept second at least, and first in my eyes.
  • 1 0
 He actually said that?
  • 10 1
 Thats was so cool
  • 4 0
Cant even talk right thats how blown my mind is!
  • 7 0
By popular demand we get Brendan Fairclaw's Rampage POV or that what his name sounds like in US?
  • 7 0
this is nuts! this is madness!
  • 6 0
That was deserving of a podium for me. Semenuk, Van Steenbergen, Fairclough then Reeder is how the day went for me.
  • 5 1
Completely agree, Rheeder had a good run, but not that good
  • 6 0
Such an awesome run, flipping the canyon Gap is beyond bonkers. Love Olly & Deaks chasing him down after nailing it..
  • 5 0
I teared up watching this and loved hearing his diggers yelling as they chased him. He freakin' killed it in every way at Rampage. Kudos Brendog
  • 3 0
After knowing how it turned out I'm still holding my breath watching that POV, utterly insane line with a true rampage McGazza canyon backflip. So happy he landed that okay. What Brendog accomplished this year between the World Cup, Hardline and Rampage is truly remarkable. Major Props are in order!
  • 6 0
 Best rampage line. Ever ????????!
  • 5 0
The live stream didn’t do this line justice. After watching this POV, it is WAY more gnarly. That was badass!
  • 5 0
Absolut mental! Love how you can hear the audience going nuts after big gap.
  • 3 0
I didn't vote for his line, but seeing the POV I'd like to change my vote. That seemed far more in keeping with the "spirit" of Rampage (whatever that is) than whomever I did vote for.
  • 2 0
I couldn't believe it when he flipped that canyon, just utterly bonkers, managed to watch his run live, I was running round the house screaming my wife thought I was mad.... wish he had made the podium but somehow not surprised, just so pleased he got a decent score for a change. Semenuk looks so clean and calculated, very different to Brendan, I think he deserved the win in the end. I haven't watched the replay, I saw Andreu crash, need to see his second run
  • 3 1
Brendog flipping the canyon brought a genuine tear to my eye. He deserved a podium in my opinion. I'm not casting aspersions against the judges, there are plenty of theories flying about about that (Brendan isn't a Redbull athlete for one).
I think he embodied the spirit of Rampage, delivered an honest run and frankly I think should've got best trick.
  • 3 1
This was THE RUN of Rampage. Nose manual off the start beaten by a ride down! 50ft canyon backflip beaten by, small gap suicide no hander The rock drop into raw super steep beaten by backflip into wide manicured runout Backflip no hander beaten by a foot plant3. I think BR, TVS had the other 2 memorable runs, BS's run was smooth but a little safe for my liking, he had 3's beating front flips off the same feature. Rampage is always controversial, would not want to be a judge thats for sure, I think BS's run lacked the amplitude and the natural features that were supposed to be judged compared to other runs. Awesome event and the level was so high.
  • 6 1
Same as Szymon Godziek, Brendan was underestimated for sure.
  • 5 0
This is the run of the day!!
  • 5 0
Mindblowing. Best line for sure. And the speed! Stunning run.
  • 11 7
This was the most memorable run for sure. What did the winners do again? A can-can backflip or something?
  • 13 3
How about a Backflip Drop into a steep Double Drop? Semenuks Line was Rampage AF.
  • 4 0
I was with a group of 14 people watching this and we all went crazy in a small appartment. He gave us a great show !!!
  • 2 0
How he did not win Rampage is a mystery of the universe. Semenuk was clean and did a lot of tricks but Brendan's run was f ing rowdy. Rowdy always wins in my book. Cheers to being a complete Savage and master of your craft.
  • 1 0
I watched the whole thing live and this is the only run I've watched subsequently.

They should have a separate event ("Real Rampage" or something?), For freeriders, rather than just slope style riders. It's amazing, but I get bored of it after a few hours. It's not "mountain biking".
  • 1 0
This year Brendog nailed it big. The POV footage just really shows how gnarly the track was and shows so many more drops and jumps. I thought the heli footage this year was pish compared to last years closer footage shot from drones and closer cameras. What was really amazing was the braking control and so little of that too.Awesome.
  • 5 0
 Favorite run
  • 3 0
That rock he hops onto is so gnarly and then the canyon flip, mindblowing!!
  • 12 12
What I love about “tricks’n’stuff”, “freeride” community is that even if you are not as good as the best folks in that game, they totally respect you and get stoked for you when you show that you work hard and want to progress. Like Brendog, full send. Hemay not throw the best tricks but he goes for it. Unlike fkng “mountain bikers”, “enduro bros” who can’t do sht and are all pimpstery, looking who’s better or worse than they are. In Rampage, Slopestyle, dirt, “freeride”, you can or you cannot do sht. In MTB you just tell stories how it went on that feature over there and everyone has to believe you... did I say I am drunk and I am having a crisis? Fkng Down Country now? Really? Who the fk are you trying to fool? When are you going to talk about Yeti SB140 being the sht? I want to puke.

Good job Brendan, amazing stuff, I love you man. Ollie and that other nice appearing friend of yours too. Hell of a job, congrats.
  • 2 0
Podium run. Period end of statement. Rough AF, fast, big moves, a track type riding, lines that were far from perfectly groomed. That was rampage.
  • 4 3
As long as Brendon is associated with the UCI and downhill I don't think he'll ever win Rampage. It's a shame because by now he should be well up there in the freeride hall of fame.
  • 4 0
 BDog deserves a bone
  • 3 0
This line is otherworldly... The canyon gap is absolutely mental !
  • 4 0
 Brendoooooooog!
  • 2 0
Man. You can feel the emotion as he gets to the bottom. Absolutely amazing.
  • 3 0
The only rampage run that makes me feel emotional.
  • 4 0
Same. It's the very essence of freeride, the exposure, the rawness, riding and building with the terrain, complementing the mountain. Not flattening it into 10ft wide motorway sections then ridden by 5,8,10 riders
  • 2 0
Watch it gain with headphones, he calmly says “cmon man” to himself right before that canyon backflip.
  • 3 0
For me you are first place, that is a pure old school Rampage..
  • 3 0
 The best! Well done Brendog!
  • 1 0
i dig this more than other stuff. It's just fast loose and wild and not as slope styley. Everyone else is still rad, but this is my jam.
  • 2 0
This is just the dogs bollocks...
  • 2 0
The sound of the crowd when he flips the canyon is amazing.
  • 1 0
So stoked for him... That's a real builder... creativity and rowdy to the max. Him and his crew killed it.
  • 1 0
One of the few fully versatile riders with a cv to back it up, rad run for sure.
  • 2 0
Wow. What a freaking styling, sendy, flowy run. Just insane.
  • 2 0
Love hearing his builders screaming in the background after the canyon gap
  • 2 0
That was so fast so huge winning run for me !
  • 2 0
Looks even more insane in pov. They should award a freeride award.
  • 3 0
 Done properly.
  • 2 0
Oh man, #Fairclaw killing it again! So rowdy.
  • 2 0
 Favourite run hands down.
  • 3 2
This is obviously a second place run. Rheeder’s run was nowhere near as good as this. The judges truly suck.
  • 1 0
This was the best Big Mountain run, sucks that rampage is a slope competition now. Big man got robbed.
  • 2 0
 Wow!
  • 2 0
 That's a line!
  • 2 0
 Sick run Brendogg!
  • 2 0
 Job done
  • 2 0
 Epic!
  • 2 0
 Sick sick sick line

  • 1 0
POV gives a whole different perspective. Gdamn. So sick.

all rampage was was a series of backflips..
