Video: Elite Winning Runs from the Fort William DH World Cup 2024

by Ed Spratt
Relive the amazing winning runs from Fort William below.

After Vali Höll's round one win, the YT Mob also released a video marking her victory. Interestingly it is the third time a new YT Tues model has won its first World Cup race (Gwin-2016 Lourdes, Gwin-2018 Losinj, Vali-2024 Fort William).

I appreciate they have the budget to task satellites to film mountain bike races now. Baller move.

@adrock-whistler Hahahahahahahahaha, under-rated comment. Made my day.
  • 11 0
The camera was so far away that even the commentators coudn't see that Greg Minnaar crashed. If you can't even notice that someone crashed, the camera is too far away. That shot was a bad idea. And then the other long-range camera that wasn't in outer space was partially blocked by the gondola every few seconds. Annoying.

As much as everyone loved to dunk on the coverage, I noticed a decent amount of positive changes to this year. No more FPV drones, no CG in the booth, and a lot better angles for the camera work. Feed was still a bit choppy at times. Really thought it was a solid idea to give intro clips for each rider with their bike, curious if they'll redo those for all the special edition kits and bikes throughout the season.

I can't complain about the coverage, tbh. Paid the Eurosport subscription and I think I got my moneys worth. But the commentary... The racing was good, but I found myself taking a nap somewhere to the end of it. At one time, some rider was a second up and they made no comment whatsoever. There were some interesting insights through the broadcast, but the RW intensity is really missing. As soon as they can step up the commentary, I think we're finally on to something. And not hating, but having someone with such a strong accent as Ric McLaughlin on the booth makes it kind of hard to understand sometimes

Coverage is better. Ric is better. Camera work could improve, too much tracking racers close. Makes it look like they are going 5mph .

Good you enjoyed but It's still miles miles away from RB... and who nows how much they would have improved this lost 2 seasons..

WB promise was to bring it even further than RB... Into another level... and there is no signs of it yet but the opposite...

Plus only few were able to watch it... Took me 10 min to figure it out how to watch it in Eurosport.. come on! Must be a command to hide it or what??

This is a chest board game... Professionals at the bottom are trying to do their best with the resources they are given which are few but not big budget at all...

I will keep insisting so far this is a controled demolition from higher ranks...

They give us a bit but they make sure MTB comes back to it's minoritary place were it always been till RB saw the potential and took it seriously...

It's more than obvious someone is putting sticks into the wheel of our sport... Who can't see it is blind really...

It's sublime but they are doing the job... Fanbase cut, new generations out of the equation... MTB show Boom deactivated.

There was a drone at the bottom

This is Pierron's winning run from 2019:

youtu.be/PExRrrcUGMA?t=185

Approximately two and a half minutes what was a longer track are covered.

Compare this to the over four minutes of coverage of Bruni's run yesterday.

Also, in my opinion, the long range shots are better than nothing. The parts of the track that were yesterday covered by drone or occasionally blocked by gondola were completely excluded from the Red Bull coverage.
  • 4 1
@Tmfnll: Yeah people are wearing rose tinted glasses when remembering RedBull coverage. Sure some of the current shots from far away aren't perfect but still better than nothing. It is just too impractical to have cameras everywhere.
  • 2 4
@Tmfnll: Thx Just re watched. It's obvious RB it's way better show even if it's shorter the cameras are way better... yesterday they didn't show properly the most interesting spectacular iconic part of the track... ant heli... cameras in the pinball where utterly boring.... just compare with this cameras from RB... to come here to make our
sport boring and painful to see even for us it's another way to kill it.
  • 2 4
@sadfusde: .. oh wait.. and WE ARE PAYING FOR THIS SHIT...
  • 3 1
@PauRexs: Could you post a link to the 'interesting spectacular iconic part of the track' in the video from 2019 that is not in the video of Loïc Bruni at the top of this page?
  • 2 0
@Tmfnll: all the top section is way better the shots and the angles. Any specialist camera operator in mtb will tell you.
  • 4 1
@Tmfnll: I appreciate the comparison here. The new one might cover more of the track, but RB's coverage is vastly more exciting, showing not just the gnarliness of the track but the speed the racers hit these sections. The new coverage is like watching someone ride a trail from a ski lift vs standing track side.
  • 3 0
@Rubberelli: this! thx God I am not alone...
  • 4 0
@PauRexs: you mean on the RB coverage? Yes, I have been a video producer for over 30 years and the RB angles are so good that shreddits can be made from them. Just watch the 12 min highlight reels from yesterday and you can see how unexciting the camera angles are. In the Amaury 2019 link, watch the zoom out from the raging stream to Amaury jumping that stream. Just fantastic.
  • 2 1
@Rubberelli: sweet to got you! So now please tell us how in the earth WB studios / money (from sponsors / teams fees / UCI and payperviews and his own...) can be SO CRAP at its second season attempt?!

Are we so naive to believe they don't know how to do it better? Or they just want to fill somehow their empty promise to make us believe they are really trying?

My appreciation for all the professionals involved trying to do their best with small budgets... but their bosses just didn't came here to make MTB great again... and I bed some on the top know which is their agenda...
  • 1 0
@Rubberelli: I have to say, I hadn't noticed the camera angles were any worse now so I'll have to defer to your professional experience.

I will observe that in the 2019 video there was a total of around 30 seconds of footage before the old deer gate section versus 2 minutes (i.e. all) of Bruni's run. It used to be a regular occurrence that falls happened off camera whereas now all the important events are captured.

As far as my own personal enjoyment is concerned, this is far more valuable than the zoom.
  • 3 0
@PauRexs: For one, I don't know who is producing the live feed that all the broadcasters across the globe use, but my guess is they use sport broadcasters who would be hired by the Olympics etc. To film a great many sports, probably specializing in soccer). While Red Bull hires actual MTB filmers. The MTB filmers would be cheaper and not use as expensive equipment (in RB races, you saw the feed go out in certain sections occasionally, which is very rare in Olympic level productions).
  • 3 0
@Tmfnll: I'm not sure what value you are looking for. I'm looking for an exciting race, that's it. Many crashes occurred off camera in RB because some small thing changed on course that caught up riders, but RB camera ops had already set up broadcast feeds in certain sections to catch the most visually exciting spots of the track. In this new coverage, you couldn't even tell Minnaar crashed because he was like 2% of the screen, so who cares if it actually gets caught on camera if he only looks like an ant?
  • 2 0
@Rubberelli: so thats common sense.. who on earth would hire not mtb specialists cameraman's... you know straight away they are not mtb specialists when they film the body instead of the wheels tracking the soil into close takes... the same happened on the slowmo of the jumps for the XC in Brazil...

If ppl who doesn't have the know how of our sport it has to make the pinnacle of our sport it means that guy who accompanied C.Ball who promised that he either was lying or was high on drugs...
  • 1 1
@Rubberelli: Minnaar's crash was captured by a regular camera at the side of the track at a distance of not more than 10 metres.
  • 3 0
@Tmfnll: while I saw the nice angle of both of Minnar's crashes, I did not believe that was from broadcast (but I cant get the broadcast so...). I saw a highlight reel that showed a chunk of Minnaar's run and had only one of the two crashes in it.
  • 4 0
@PauRexs: You hire a broadcast crew/company that you know is dependable and will do a good job, so that might mean a crew that specializes in another sport but will broadcast a large number of sports. Live broadcasting is a highly technical field and a lot of ad $$$ could be lost if your broadcast goes down or is subpar. But MTB DH was the most important sport to Red Bull, so they would go above and beyond to give great coverage because it was the most watched thing on their channel. For Discovery Max it might be the least watched sport for all I know.
  • 1 0
@Rubberelli: that's the Key... do they really care about us? Not much... and if they or someone bought the rights it was for making a bet even harder than RB once proved its potential... which you won't obtain if at least you don't offer the same benchmark cause there is a fine line for this sport for making it appealing or not...
  • 1 0
@PauRexs: They definitely do not "care about us". They are boardroom executives moving dollars around to give an impression of growth potential to increase share value.
  • 1 0
@Rubberelli: it's beyond that trust me... when you already have all the money you want power moving your agendas forward... and they are explicitly... WEF and Agenda 2030 is in front of our noses and everyone still so naive to think it won't have an impact on our sport...

I could watch Loic ride for hours, he's so smooth, it's almost unbelievable.
  • 12 0
Why dose it have to be so hard to watch the race?! This is the first time I haven't watched a race in over 10 years!

@sanction: it was on Staylive in NZ. It's about $10NZD billed monthly so you can sign up for the season then cancel in October. The stream worked great. It's a cheaper and easier option than most other countries have got now:

app.staylive.io/cycling/ucimtbworldseries
  • 1 0
@antennae: Are there options for different language commentary on staylive? Last year the coverage on mute made it bearable, but even better was commentary in a language I couldn't understand!
  • 2 0
@jayray32: haha. No audio options as far as I can see. The Ric + Gwin + Myriam/Tahnee commentary was much better than last year though.
  • 9 2
Video unavailable in our country. losing the love for the sport. Have to resort to YouTube highlights with horrendous commentary. best place for us now is Instagram.. damn you UCI. you've killed it.

They haven't really killed it just because a couple of people from Aus & NZ cant work out how to watch it.

Gwin sounded like he was on valume and the other guy....meh. Poor play by play meh colour commentary
  • 1 1
I'm going to play devils advocate and argue the opposite. At least here is the US it's on a big steaming platform (MAX) at no extra for now. In the past the redbull or GCN app wasn't on my newish LG tv.

Paying for it does suck especially for smaller sports, but i'm guessing it will get more eyes on it when compared with redbull or gcn coverage.
  • 1 0
@ajaxwalker: I'd say one major issue is this new idea of putting this somewhere where everyone can easily watch it (whether they are originally into MTB or not) is a great idea, but with the WBD platforms varying so much globally the usability is a big issue.

Here in Finland (and in quite a few other European countries) we'll get MAX later this month. I'm sure pricing varies between countries, but here it'll be a fairly decent deal, the sports add-on being 5€/ month (the basic price being 6/10/14€ a month depending on the plan). I've had the previous HBO Max subscription since their launch here a few years ago, meaning I can keep my 50% off offer, so all in all I'll be paying 10€ a month for everything including the sports stuff.

Until that you can watch the racing on Eurosport. Here it basically means either subscribing to Discovery+ or to Eurosport directly, the latter being cheaper. You can do this either with their smart TV app (I'm not 100% sure Eurosport has one, since I don't have a smart TV) or through their websites - both should have it pretty easy to find also the DH stuff, since you can simply search for all the on demand sports not shown live on either of their main channels. However, apparently in some European countries you can't subscribe to Eurosport directly, but you'll have to get D+.

At the same time in some countries the "traditional" Eurosport channels are still a thing, meaning you'll get the two live channels as part of some TV deal - the channels that aren't showing DH live. Based on comments here some have been able to find some other Eurosport channel/ service that they didn't know they had that, which was showing the downhill races. Other "regular TV watchers" might need to look into if they have access to some online streams they don't normally use. All while the racing is said to be available "on Eurosport channels". I'm not even going to go into the Staylive stuff offered to the likes of New Zealand.

If it was just about the (continuously higher) prices is one thing, but now globally a lot of the people have no idea how to find this stuff even if they're already paying for the subscription, since the WBD offering is so disorganized.

The super far away drone footage is total b.s. As is the super far away long panning camera that was often obscured by the gondola. Get some proper cameras on the track and show us the key sections up close damnit!
  • 7 2
Is there really nothing better they can talk about during the winning run? They weren't even talking about his lines or riding. This is the fastest run of they day and they sounded straight up bored. A sport that can't even get excited for itself. Is that where we're at?
  • 5 0
Not sure I believe the heart rate graphic. It's also in the way. Bruni only went up 1 beat per minute when pedalling furiously? lol
  • 2 0
 Same thought. Highly dubious.
  • 2 0
Gwin mentioned it as well, something like if that is their actual heart rate maybe I shouldn't be racing.
  • 2 0
It's just a way for their sponsor, Whoop, to showcase some of their technology and what they do. Otherwise I don't think anyone would give a hoot about rider's BPMs
  • 6 0
@t-rick: makes whoop look even worse than it is
  • 1 0
@matjtom90: hahaha ok confirmed it’s dumb then
  • 2 0
@matjtom90: he said that when they showed Nina Hoffmann with 140bpm on the motorway. Loics 160bpm might be ok, as he says he runs low typically. Still, if anything it's too low.
  • 1 0
@Muckal: loic was 160 in the middle of the course. He exploded on the pedals and we got to 161
  • 3 2
Let Ben C. do the filming and commentary, for sure he did a better job! Too far shooting on the upper part, and really poor coverage in the general (I don't understand the cameras points). Ok add sone nice big monitors for the public at the race, but at home we didn't see that much. And the commentary... Why Aaron doesn't ride instead of talking? Respect for him as one of the best riders of the past, but where is the energy while comment: people watching and especially the riders deserve Rob's energy at the mic!
  • 5 0
Is it captured with the international space station or what?
  • 5 0
From the dark side of the moon. The Space Station some time was in front of the camera
  • 3 3
Anyone who thinks that coverage is anywhere near decent is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Red Bull coverage wasn’t perfect, but Rob was a million times better at commentary than Ric, we didn’t have a completely superfluous generic, created-by-AI anchor and IT WAS FREE!

If everyone cancelled their subscription and let Discovery know why then we may not be in this situation.
  • 6 2
rose tinted glasses. Rob was just repeating itself rider after rider how incredible ride that was shouting at the microphone as loud as he could. It is not very subtle and really tiring at times. The reality is commenting is hard. It is nice to have some but very often the less is the better.
  • 1 1
@opignonlibre: Disagree, Rob had passion and it was contagious. I almost fell asleep listening to these guys during Loics run, the fastest run of the day.
  • 2 0
@gnarnaimo: if you need someone to get interested during the broadcast, I guess you aren't that interested in DH and can tune to any sport with a passionnated host.

You can look for any other sport were the host fits you and you will be happy.
  • 1 1
@opignonlibre: To be honest if it were raw I would likely have been less sleepy than listening to Ric and Aaron talking, not engaging it what's actively happening while we watch. Barely any talk of what's currently happening on course while we watch riders. No mention of line choice, sometimes nothing even said when a rider is in the green. Going on tangents about things not currently relevant. In a manner that you feel you could be watching a golf tournament or tennis. Just show the stats on the screen and take the voices out and we have an improvement in alot of cases.
  • 1 1
Who was the American commentator? Gonna use his voice to get my 5 year old to sleep! Glad I only watched loic run was too sleepy to bother with anything else. Sad to say I’m glad I haven’t bothered purchasing anything to watch the world cups this year despite feeling I’d like to support it.
  • 3 1
If I can't watch it in Nz it didn't really happen. DH is dead if there is no coverage.
  • 1 0
gwin is a genius, I really enjoy his perspective cause he has that race winning mentality. thanks red bull
