Why so much negativity for Sagan? He's an entertaining guy, and a (former) top class athlete, so I think it is only cool (and good for the sport) that he shows how much loves mountain biking and that he has a go at it. Why not applaud him and set our own unrealistic expectations aside.

Shoutout Sandra Walter of Canada for being 22 years old when Puck Pieterse was born lol.
  • 28 2
Shout out to Rick on GCN commentary for spoiling the men's result 26 seconds into the women's race. No dubbed sound effects though, things are improving!
  • 4 0
 Right, such an a***
  • 2 0
Ya was really disappointed there. I'm used to the women's going first, so I watched it on replay and heard the spoilers. Blah.

I love this Sagan MTB retirement arc.

Tom has a new friend (one more ^^)
  • 3 0
I mean if you want to choose someone to chop an bounce off, might as well chop the biggest guy there
  • 13 11
He got his wheel in front, I’d say it was his corner.
  • 15 4
@sargey2003: he ran real wide out of it though. Didn't leave any reasonable line choices. Pest.
  • 8 8
 @sargey2003: Chauvinisme ? Big Grin
No he took way too much speed before the turn, it was not a smart move and he was unable to old his line because of that, it's clearly an error, and he made it pay to Luca.
If he hadn't wiped off Luca, he was so wide on exit that Luca, who took the turn the right way would have put 3 meters on him.
  • 19 7
@kegron: there I was thinking that they were racing… silly me.
  • 9 6
@tealdub: of course he did, he took loads of speed into an inside line to make a pass, pretty daft to turn into him.

Have you ever race?
  • 3 4
@sargey2003: Now it's confirmed : chauvinisme Big Grin

A clue : It's not something that happen every race, and it's for a reason...
  • 6 9
 @sargey2003:
Did you ever race too ? If so, do you kow you are just supposed to win by being the fastest not by eliminating opponents ???
  • 16 9
@kegron: yup, raced XC, DH, Enduro and road (criterium) and sometimes you need to make aggressive passes, the key is to make sure you have the corner, which means getting to the corner in front.

If the other guy crashes because he won’t give way that’s his problem.

And it’s generally the guy behind who crashes.

This is nothing to do with the fact that I am British, leave your prejudice out of this.
  • 9 11
@sargey2003: this was not an agressive pass, this was an elimination.
"If the other guy crashes because he won’t give way that’s his problem."
So nice.

@sargey2003: Yes; if you leave a gap, then don't complain when someone sticks it up the inside - poor racecraft from Luca.
There was a famous/ legendary racing driver who once said "when you don't go for a gap, you're no longer a racing driver". It applies here.....
  • 3 2
 @sargey2003: Yep - Definitely a Verstappen move.
  • 23 5
@kegron: Dude, it's racing - on a narrow XC course with few passing opportunities it's all about the line, going for a gap (or blocking the pass). Luca left the gap, Pidcock went for it, If Pidcock had not got his wheel ahead (in fact all he needed to do was get alongside) then it would have been dirty and both of them probably would have gone down, but he got ahead into the corner.

That kind of manouvre has a name - the Block Pass - so called because you block your rival from turning in (unless they choose to risk crashing). The way to avoid being passed that way is to block the inside line.

That was a World Championships medal at stake - I'd have pulled that manouvre on my mates for bragging rights...

@sargey2003: Like every cat 4 who screams, "Inside" as they bomb up and take out the top 10 guys before the sprint. It's not my fault they crashed out, should've moved when I put us on a crash course.

@Three6ty: lol. Ayrton Senna said that. Verstappen....pfft...

What the actual eff. British TV makes no mention of his front wheel chop in post race interview. Like they made a deal before it went live. Pidcock didn't have the legs and he bludgeoned a top XCC rider. Not a good look.
  • 2 0
 @Starch-Anton: Mr. Senna (great quote)
  • 3 1
@UPBike: gotta wonder how he managed to be close enough to make the move if he didn’t have the legs…
  • 7 3
Realistically, if Luca WAS so good, he WOULD have been able to take the corner as fast as Pidcock. He WOULD have been ahead, he WOULD have finished 3rd. Lots of clutching at straws here but instead, he was slower and left a gap. Unlucky lad, that's racing.
  • 5 0
@kegron: if Luca Scwartzbaumer had been smart, he would have opened the door a bit more at the last moment to pass Tom Pidcocm on the inside at the exit of the turn and they would have had a fair sprint.

That is how you counter a block pass where the racer doing the maneuver is overcooking a bit like Pidcock did.

Instead he lacked anticipation and tried to keep a line that didn't exist anymore and crashed, which is pretty much his fault.

@opignonlibre: that's a good shout! I'd not have thought of that myself now let alone after that race!
  • 11 4
The course looked very wide and easy even by XCC standards. Could have used some multi line tech sections in addition to all the gravel. Would be cool to see an overtake on a root section or something to decide the race. And no disrespect to Gaze, but Im thinking Mathieu stepped aside to let his teammate have a shot. He would have crushed this. Great win for Gaze regardless

MvdP will be saving everything for XCO to add to his road and CX champs this year, short track doesn't have the same reputation as the Olympic distance.
  • 2 0
@HankHank: he said in an interview after the road race he's not going into the XCO race with high expectations... we'll see what actually happens but it sounds like he might not be gunning that hard for the win.

@bkm303: that road race looked brutal, I'm not surprised he's dialling down expectations. His fall looked nasty too.
  • 2 0
@HankHank: yeah he's an absolute legend for that performance. That race looked absolutely brutal but he brought it home with some real drama and panache!
  • 7 0
LOL Pauline... he wasn't going anywhere. Wink -- you could have finished the interview

Anyone notice the fairly inappropriate camera person at the beginning of broadcast of mens race
  • 1 0
Yeah. I wondered if she was some celebrity but if she was I didn't recognise her.

I was expecting a more interesting race in the sense of a short, explosive race.....Basically an easy course with the same surface, one 10s climb, then left and right flow trail to the finish straight. Okay, they had a fast pace but still nothing for them until the last lap....10s ful power, flow trail and it's over.

Clement Horny from Belgium had a hard time, finishing down in 49th place..
  • 5 0
What do you expect? Stiff competition at world champs!
  • 3 0
@mi-bike: guess he didn't push hard enough
  • 4 0
My point of view: Maybe Luca just took a look at Pidcocks bikes and had to vomit…
  • 5 1
Sagan be like “mtb not so difficult 17 years ago. I go back to road.”
  • 3 0
The winners seemed less interested than usual in sticking around for an interview (on GCN).
  • 3 0
I guess Gaze was trying not to burn too many matches pre xco or something? But man he almost lost that cruising it home.
  • 3 0
The final sprint was totally missed into the live feed... seemed they still had one more lap to go...
  • 2 0
Rik kept getting the lap number wrong as well and yeah, they totally missed the final sprint.

@Davec85: that was like a coitus interrumpus... That's it... Gone...

Did men and women have the same lap?
  • 3 0
Same course; women 10 laps, men 11 laps. Lap was 900m.
  • 7 10
Unsportsmanlike attack on Schwarzbauer by Pidcock. Not a fan. Pauline was epic in the women's race though! I have no issue with Ric's commentary except for the ridiculous amount of spoilers for the men's race during the women's race.
  • 12 4
Schwarzbauer left a gap and Pidcock put his bike in that gap. It was just good racecraft from Pidcock and naive riding from Schwarzbauer.
  • 4 2
@PaulFarley: Tom was hammering into that corner and took a decent line.

Luca was slower and took a tight line and would have relied on power in the last sprint.

The better rider finished 3rd imo.

Is there a place where I can see the full replay?
  • 4 4
 Gazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzed!
  • 11 10
Anyone remember when Gaze flatted and flipped the bird to Anton Cooper because he thought he should have waited for him a few years back? Wonder if he's grown up at all.
  • 4 3
 Hell yeah Gaze!
  • 3 0
She mentioned on Instagram she decided to go with the team relay and XCO, skipping the short track.
  • 3 1
Same with Jenny? DNS maybe last minute choice.
  • 2 0
@suspended-flesh: Jenny posted that she was diagnosed w/ low ferritin and "Worlds coming up this weekend and as usual I’ll do the best I can." so maybe conserving like Kate as you suggested.
  • 1 1
 @donimo: thanks, mate.
