Words and Photos by Eddie ClarkThere's a place high in the Sonoran Desert outside of Tucson, AZ where on Presidents's Day Weekend mountain bikers from all over congregate to revel and ride bikes for 24 hours. For 2023, Epic Rides Celebrated its 23'rd year of riding single track at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo presented by Tucson Medical Center. As one of the largest 24 Hour events in the world, the mellow Sonoran Desert vibes, an industry bike + gear expo, beer gardens, delicious food vendors and 24 hours of tunes provided by 91.3 KXCI Community Radio ensures this festival is far more than just a 24-Hour mountain bike event.
This year a winter storm left the venue covered in a couple inches of snow on Wednesday morning. Fortunately, it's the desert and the trails and 24 Hour Town quickly dried out as the venue came to life on Thursday. By race day the sun returned in full force for a perfect day of bike racing on a fast 16 mile course comprised of mostly singletrack and two-track roads used by ranchers of the Willow Springs Ranch where the venue is located. While moderately easy on the technical scale, 900 feet of climbing per lap adds up as the laps tick by, and the abundance of various species of cacti provide an immediate penalty for mistakes.
Julie Momber set the bar in the women's solo with 16 laps while Curtiss Feltner took the men's solo class win with 18 laps in 24 hours. Nich Beechan, Victor Sheldan, Pete Tholl and Brandon Mills of Team Not So Pretty In Pink took the overall highest lap count with 24 laps for the win in the 4-Person Open Men's race.
