Roots, rocks, beer, and miles of prime singletrack — Bellingham, WA has everything you need for the perfect enduro race. Although it's better known for the trails on Galbraith Mountain, Bellingham also has convenient access a forest playground at Larrabee State Park. The narrow sandstone ridges, lush forests, and silhouetted glimpses of the Puget Sound and Mt. Baker instantly set the park apart. Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition had their first Enduro of Subdued Excitement here last year, and this year they returned for more shredding and to race a new trail.

A lot goes into planning a race, but rolling out a new trail isn’t usually one of them. Double Down started taking shape in April, and the bone-work of a great trail was in place by the time the dry summer months hit. With moisture on the horizon and a looming race date, the trail has undergone a fervor of repairs and tweaks that only stopped the day before.

Spirits were high in the staging area on Saturday morning.

All of the planning, sweat, and volunteer hours were clearly worth it after seeing the looks of concentration and smiles from the 187 racers as they attacked Double Down. In roughly a mile, the trail packs in a slew of drops and rolls, plenty of exposure and a ride through a spectacular old-growth forest — and yes, it can be shuttled. Things worth having require time, though. Double Down was originally proposed back in November of 2012. Riding on the trail today was only possible through the strong advocacy of WMBC, the leadership of trail director Eric Brown, and a receptive partnership with Larrabee State Park. Going forward there's already a trail day this weekend to keep working on Double Down, and further trail planning will continue this winter.

An unfavorable weather forecast in the week leading up to the race clearly had racers on edge — as was evident by the influx of entrants once the barometer settled down. Luckily, Saturday presented with cool, overcast weather with just a dash of sunlight and some ripping fast dirt. All good news for riders who rode 16 miles and climbed 3,800 feet during the race. Overall things went smoothly during the four stages, except for a long line leading into stage one and a few injuries.

Race Results: In total, a little over half of the entrants were local riders. And while there were many strong finishes from visiting riders, the locals did a good job putting their numbers and home-court knowledge to use. Lars Sternberg crushed every stage to carry a clean win in Pro Men. He was followed by Logan Wetzel, Aaron Bradford, Jason Eiswald, and Matt Russell. Seattle's, Emily Sabelhaus took the win for Pro Women ahead of Adrian Hopkins, Britney White, and Karen O'Connell. Despite some overzealous maneuvering on stage four, Jimmy Schwend-Cloherty ended with a healthy lead in Junior Men 17 & Under ahead of Bryce Kans, Brenden Pelkie, Elliot Jamieson, and Eli Gold. Check out the full results here.

Amazing work by all the crew who put this trail together and organized these races! Big shout out to Eric Brown EB Extreme! All time hustler of bike advocacy!

O' B'Ham the beautiful. Props for WMBC.

Went to college there, didn't discover mountain biking until after I moved away. Shit like this depresses me every time.
  • + 3
How'd you like the school? Was tryin to get a look at it
  • + 3
WWU grad here. The school is great, so is the town, the people, and most importantly the mountain biking....
  • + 2
@NastyCanasta what year did you grad? 08 here...

Everything but the weather is great in Bham.
  • + 3
Bhams my hometown and WWU is my school. The weather here is excellently varied, we of this city are warm and welcoming, ecofriendly and fresh. The university in the last two years has evolved mightily, adding a slew of new and innovative study paths. Supply Chain Management, Businees Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Alternative Energy Policy, Environmental Economics - all of those fire degrees.
Oh and 9,000 new acres of forest opened up to new mountain bike trail building.
5 mountains, more than you can ride in a week. Come stay! Bhams poppin off!

to the locals on the thread: I'm trying to find somewhere to call home and all I wanna do is ride my bike in the woods. I've been checking out Bellingham and have plans to make the move up there next summer. Any advice? How are guys about showing new folks around? I just need a job to pay for bills and buy bike shit, are they available? Also, Pisgah In WNC is my weekend riding destination, how do the trails up there compare? The chunkier the better.

Thanks for the help!

@jlee0811 a number of hick hucksters have relocated to Bellingham over the past number of years. You'll find a welcoming community that is into whatever kind of riding you're into. We've got it all, and riders who ride it all. You should be able to find gainful employment if you're willing to look around and find it. Bellingham is a college town, so there are opportunities for the creative.
Moved here to go to school 25 years ago... Had never lived anywhere longer than 4 years before that.

Those trees ARE huge @MDRipper ! I was fortunate enough to get to ride these trails a week before the race during a short riding vacation with the Transition boys. It is so beautiful on Chuckanut. I only got to ride one day there so I really want to go back!
  • + 4
I'm sorry to be a negative nancy, and I could totally be in the wrong, but Mr. Cooper, who won beginner, looks like a total sand bagger. His riding form, breathing technique, and build/fitness, don't match a beginner rider. Could have sworn it was Ritchie Rude at first glance.
  • + 2
 What a Prick, Right!
  • + 1
Eh, could be a long time rider first time racer... didn't know where to enter. Started at the bottom now he's here?
  • + 1
Looks like everyone had a great time! I was really looking forward to partaking this year, but the entry fee was a bit to rich for my poor college student budget; I'll have to mark the calendar now and plan better for next year!
  • + 5
 Eric, great coverage as always.
  • + 4
Enduro of Subdued Excitement. Sounds like a weapon in Skyrim. Or D&D.
  • + 3
Great race, see you all next year. Great job Eric.
  • + 2
Hahaha. Ebxtreme!! To hyper? Whhaaaat? Definitely not when he's doing his "swaying in the wind" trick Smile
  • + 0
...I'm not here to start no trouble, I'm just doin' the EB Shuffle!
  • + 3
Bang up work as always Eric!
  • + 1
You know the trail isnt gnarly enough when there is a guy with a unicycle riding it.
  • + 2
Have you ridden there, because there is plenty of gnarlty parts on the trails. It is more of a testament to the skill of the unicycle rider. Believe me I have ridden there and seen the unicycle ride.
  • + 1
I've ridden these trails on a unicycle and its not easy. Look at dudes leg muscles, proof its not to easy. Remember theses no coasting on a uni, pedal up, pedal down. No easy task!
  • + 1
Awesome job with the race guys, so much fun. will defiantly be back next year!
  • + 1
 defiantly?
  • + 2
haha whoops, thanks for calling me out. I will definitely work on that!
  • + 2
Just the tip of the Broberg
